Her Head Hung Low in Shame

Luna walked through the castle's halls, just like every morning. The early sun rays washed on the marble floors, filtering through the windows that could give you a pleasant view towards the Royal Canterlot Gardens. It was a peaceful, beautiful and serene atmosphere. She loved it.

Nothing compared to her night though.

She mindlessly giggled to herself, and knew that if anypony passed by and saw her, they would think she had gone insane and Nightmare Moon was coming back. Of course, she could scare them off... though it wouldn't help with her current reputation.

Luna didn't really think that her night was better than the day. She was only fooling around with these thoughts of course, 'Tia and her loved to laugh around with this, they felt like little fillies again. Luna thought it was more like a tie between her moon, and her sister's sun.

She opened the doors leading to the dining room, where, as usual, she saw her sister already there waiting for her with her rather simple breakfast laid in the table in front of her.

Celestia. The regal regent of the sun. The epitome of beauty and grace. Incarnation of elegance and power. As Luna closed the doors behind her, she watched how the same sun rays that gave peace to the hallways, did an even greater job with her sister. Her alabaster coat seemed almost to reflect this light, making it seem as if she were glowing. It also gave a relaxing effect to her gentle magenta eyes, and the serene smile she carried as the indigo princess approached her seat right next to her adored sister just amplified this calm, fresh morning atmosphere of hers.

"Good morning, my gorgeous Lulu." She greeted her sister in a sing song voice. To Luna... her sister was acting a little strange; she was always cheery around Luna in the mornings, but not this cheery. Was Twilight visiting again?

"Good... morning, sister." Answered Luna, taking her seat, with a very slight questioning look. She also wondered what was up with the extra adjective today. Gorgeous?

"How was your sleep? Pleasant, I hope." Celestia casually asked, just like every morning, as one of her most trusted cooks gave Luna her breakfast.

"It was... fine, sister. Nothing special, really." Luna also answered out of habit, eying her meal instead of bothering to make eye contact with her sister... who was staring at her. Something was off, she knew it. "How about yours?"

"Well..." Luckily for Luna, Celestia's eyes went to her breakfast. However, this uneasiness didn't wear off. Her sister had a weird smile in her face and she seemed somewhat hesitant to answer "Nothing new either, I'm afraid."

The breakfast continued in silence, though Luna's head was the opposite. She couldn't stop thinking; something definitely felt different about her sister. Anypony wouldn't have noticed, but she knew her dear sister well enough to read her. And it's not like she had anything else to do asides form memorizing little details; insignificant parts of their daily and somewhat boring routine. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy her sister's company; ever since her return they've tried to do their best at communicating and having a good time, but routine was routine, as much as it was pleasant to be around Celestia.

Then she remembered. Part of the reason the whole Nightmare Moon thing happened was because of miscommunication, so... What if she simply asked what was wrong?

"'Tia?" she refused to part her eyes from her meal. For some reason, she felt awkward and uncomfortable.

"Yes, my Lulu?" Luna noticed how sweetly Celestia spoke to her, specially when she said her name...

"Is... something the matter?" when she dared to lift her gaze, she met the same gentle smile, but it only make her feel at more unease. She quickly turned back to her plate "I can't help but notice..."

Celestia gave no answer, she simply walked up to her sister, kissed her forehead, and left to court.

This was agonizing.

Luna regretted being so fast at both writing and reading; she had already finished the little work she had. Her overprotective sister always took a bigger part of the work, even without Luna knowing. Now there were still hours left until she had to raise her moon and her court session began, and she had nothing to do. Nothing. Nothing to keep her busy and far far away from those thoughts, that uneasiness that kept haunting her...

It was no use. Luna had to finish this once and for all.

She flew out of her balcony and went towards the court room. She looked through the window and saw... A stallion proposing to her sister. Maybe Luna was hearing voices, but a little something seemed to be whispering in her ear 'touché'. That voice was lucky; sound cannot be slapped.

But her sister would obviously turn him down. Yes, definitely. Just by looking at him one could tell he was pathetic and weak, trying to get money and power out of her sister. Celestia was much smarter than that. She probably could see right through this bastard's facade. She wouldn't allow it, right? Right?

Or maybe she would.

If Luna wasn't wrong, Celestia had given this piece of nothing a chance to court her. He would obviously fail disastrously, and he would be gone forever before he could lay a single hoof on her sister's beautiful alabaster coat. Still, it made Luna's stomach turn just by thinking this excuse of a stallion would be taking her sister around to 'romantic' places, and trying miserably to complement her infinite beauty, which actually cannot be expressed in words.

Oh, Celestia was going to hear her.

The angry princess flew away to her chambers; she needed solitude and her comfy bed as well. She toyed with the idea of forcing this stallion to bow down before her and her sister and admit how lucky he was. Both because her sister had given him a chance and because she had decided to go back to her room like a proper, civilized pony instead of blowing his ear drums with her Royal Canterlot Voice.

Once in her chambers, she closed the windows and curtains. The darkness was perfect. Then, she took off her regalia and slumped down on her bed.

Actually, the darkness, the softness of her bed, and the silence cleared up her mind enough to almost make her realize something important... Until somepony had the nerve to knock on her door.

Luna groaned and decided to ignore whoever was bothering her; they'd probably tell if it was something that required her urgent attention. Now, back to that important thing...

"Perhaps I almost forgot to raise the moon...?" She giggled "No, that is still a couple of hours away... And I would never forget something of such importance." The knock again. Luna was starting to feel nervous and uncomfortable.

"Lulu~!" Celestia! How dare she call her like that after what she did?! "It's me! Celestia!"

Oh, 'Lulu' was going to get her revenge... the evil smirk she had was enough to express this.

"Come in, dearest sister!" she imitated Celestia's sing song voice. Said alabaster princess entered, and as soon as the doors were closed, she was greeted by a tackle from her indigo sister.

"Luna?" Celestia asked oblivious of what her sister knew; she seemed genuinely confused as she laid down under Luna's angry stare.

"What is it that you need, dearest sister?"

"Oh." Celestia smiled nonchalantly, not caring about Luna's sudden aggressive demeanor "I just wanted to tell you some news." Luna couldn't stand this. She left her sister on the ground and walked back to her bed.

"About your new suitor?" the tackled princess stood up and walked just a few steps closer to the bed, wanting to keep distance she thought Luna needed.

"So you already knew..." Celestia trailed off with a slight grin. She knew Luna well enough to deduce she had been spying on her rather particular court session. "Well, as you already saw, a noble colt with a particularly big sunflower bouquet showed up and asked my hoof in marriage..."

"And you allowed him to woo you, right?" an annoyed Luna finished up for her sister, not wanting to hear the words from her mouth. It was just unbearable... for some reason. "Well, I wish him the best luck." He would need it.

She did not notice Celestia approaching until she felt something shifting on the bed, and a wing wrapping around her. Luna was about to protest and push her out of the bed until she said something that made her think... deeply.

"Are you... jealous, Luna?" no, her voice wasn't playful or nonchalant. It wasn't covered with honey or the sweet scent of roses. It was just... sincere and serious; straight to the point. And it made Luna think deeply.

...No, it couldn't be that.

"It's just... I mean, we spent such little time together, sister!" Luna finally answered with a shaky voice; her expression did not show anger, but sadness. Celestia only listened patiently "There is court, your duties, my duties... and now, a suitor! 'Tia, you were taken away from me a thousand years ago...

"And I don't want you to be taken away from me again..." She looked up at Celestia with teary eyes, and the feathery embrace only tightened in support.

Yes, this was probably it. She didn't want her sister to be completely separated from her by some random noble! He didn't even know she actually didn't like sunflowers!.. As ironic as it may be. They weren't the tastiest flowers out there.

"...Oh, Luna." Celestia cooed in her sister's ear "I'm sorry... Do you want me to leave?" Somehow, Luna felt as if she wanted to say more than this, but was holding back for some reason.

"No!" Luna immediately hugged her sister so she couldn't go away "Stay... If you are going to spend time with him in the next days, weeks or who knows... then at least I would love to have these few hours with you before your precious time is completely consumed."

The sisters spent the next hour cuddling, basking in each others warmth as they spoke about trivial things, or revived old childhood memories. Luna wasn't completely at ease though. Earlier, she felt like something was about to click into place until 'Tia came in. She couldn't shake off the feeling that this something had to do with everything, even her sister's behavior and sudden suitor.

Of course, Celestia has had various suitors other before, just not as many as anypony would think. There was this issue with time and there not being enough kindhearted and brave ponies. Luna estimated her sister had had approximately 4 or 5 suitors in her whole life, which is actually very long... There had been many, many more ponies, both stallions and mares, confessing to the sun goddess, but 'Tia could sense immediately their true intentions.

Because of this and many more reasons, Luna encouraged her sister forward in these relationships. Some became success, more became failure, but she always stood by her sister's side. Supporting her in any way she could, even if all she had to do was smile. Even if they actually spent less time together, even if all Celestia could talk about was this stallion/mare. Luna had always been there no matter what... except for the time Nightmare Moon took control of her.

Luna could only wonder why couldn't she just encourage her sister forward in this, just like she had always done. Probably it's because of the Nightmare Moon incident that she realized how much this lack of communication and time to spend together could affect them...

But she also wondered how could she pay attention to her details now. They had been together for a long time and it's now that she notices how beautiful, how majestic, yet how simple her sister can be. Celestia was her sister. There were sides of the beautiful princess nopony but her could witness. Moments she could enjoy with her, alone, with laughter filling the place... and only Luna could have them. She felt she didn't want to give these moments to anypony else. She felt they had to be hers and hers alone, not belong to some noble that was going to slowly fade away from existence eventually. She had the curse of immortality, just like her sister, and she was going to remain by her side for as much as they could endure before this curse took their sanity away.

But the point was that Luna was being unfairly selfish and childish. And this angered her; she was a grown mare now, not just some kid wanting the attention all to herself, not anymore.

"'Tia?" Celestia turned to look at her "I am... forgive me for being so childish."

"It's okay, Lulu..." she tried to hug Luna, but she stopped her to look at her in the eye. There was still a question left unanswered...

"B-but, why?" Celestia kept staring at her, urging her to explain her question "Why now? You have turned down many nobles; this one is no different from them! I can see it, sister! He wants something, and that something is not only you!" it annoyed Luna how could her sister only do nothing more than smile at her. Maybe the noble wasn't the only one looking for something else... but her sister as well. Luna sat up on the bed, but her sister remained laying on the same spot "I-I do not get this, Celestia! You have also been manifesting a strange behavior! Do you not trust me anymore?!"

Celestia gave no answer, she simply stood up from the bed, walked up to her sister, kissed her forehead, and left to her chambers.

"Celestia..." Luna sat there, staring at the doors that had been recently closed by the mare in question. The spot where her lips had been pressed to felt... cold. "You are... so selfish!" Tears streamed down through poor Luna's cheeks; she was just so confused. Why couldn't her sister just give her an answer and clear up all of this?

Something told Luna that everypony had more intentions in their hearts than what it seemed. Even herself. Luna also wanted something else, but she didn't know what... Or better said, she denied this.

She denied it, because it was... wrong. Yet she wanted to admit it, because it felt... right.

She denied it, because nothing was going to come from it. Yet she wanted to admit it, because she felt... hope.

This cold spot in her forehead... it made color rise into Luna's dark cheeks. Not only her forehead felt cold, but her entire body did also. There was some warmth missing, and she wanted it back. She wanted it to be only hers...

Why...?

"B-because, I... I'm in love with her... Celestia... my sister."

And with her head hung low in shame, her horn flared up and the night came forth.
