“Miss Octavia? Miss Octavia?”
Octavia stirred in her booth, apparently she had dozed off, and the silent ride of the Train lines had always put her mind (and eyelids) at ease. She looked up at the pony that had awoken her, the sight of the kindly train conductor signaled to her semi-conscious brain that they had arrived at their destination; a small yet growing town on the edge of the frontier: Apploosa. Octavia got up from her seat.
“I take it we’re here then?”
“Why yes, Miss Octavia, and it would seem that the local welcome wagon is waiting”
Just as the conductor finished his sentence a loud blast of trumpet music assaulted Octavia’s eardrums. The unyielding screech of their “instruments” caused her to physically cringe.
“Ugh, they could use some tuning”
“Haha, can’t say that they’re not enthusiastic now can you?”
“I’d have preferred they not sound like a dying mule”
Tavi got up on all fours, then threw her personal bag over her shoulder, her Cello along with the rest of her luggage was stowed in the hold and being unloaded by the stations staff. She opened the door to her train car which led directly onto the platform where she was again forced to endure the blare of the trumpeters while the welcome committee whooped and hollered. After what seemed like an eternity of noise pollution a young, orange Stallion walked up to her and vigorously shook her hoof.
“Welcome Miss Octavia to AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPLOOSA, we’reohsohapppythatyouwereableto-*Sharp inhale*-make it to perform on the main stage for our towns founders day JAMBOOOOOORRRREEEEEEEEEEE”
“Well, the check DID clear” Octavia mumbled under her breath
“Sorry, what was that?”
“Oh, I just jumped at the chance darling, after all, it’s not every day you get invited to an event such as this” Tavi answered, lying through her smile.
“Well, we’re just so happy to hear that I’m the towns Guide, if you need anything at all just let me know and I’ll have it for ya in a flash”
“Well, thank you, but I’d really like to get to my room, it’s been a long day of travel and I need my rest for the show in two days”
“Of course Miss Octavia, your room is prepared over at The Golden Apple; it’s the biggest hotel we have here in AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPLEOOSA”
“Fine, fine, I trust that someone will-“
“Get your luggage? Well shoot, we’ve already done all that now”
‘Thank you”
“Speakin’ to which”
The young stallion offered his hoof. Tavi took a second to catch on but then handed over her bag for the guide to carry.
Octavia followed the young Stallion through the crowd of onlookers and onto the main (unpaved road) that served as the town’s main thoroughfare. The young stallion kept on his droning.
“Now the town was settled just a few years ago well about 10 years to be exact, well 10 years in 2 days, but I suppose that would be obvious from the signs, posters and jumbo-tron which all read “Happy 10th birthday APPLOOSA”
Octavia looked up and noticed that yes pretty much every part of the town had some form of reminder of the celebration which was at hand. Including a 60 foot billboard which served almost as a second sun.
“Okay, I have an inquiry”
“Shoot away Miss”
“How do you power the Billboard?”
“Magic of course” he responded enthusiastically
“Well, ask an obvious question I suppose” Tavi said under her breath
“What was that?”
“Oh, it’s nothing, don’t worry”
“Well, alrighty then”
As they walked, Tavi took notice of the apparent hustle and bustle of the settlers, ponies were moving large quantities of apples In anticipation of the founders day celebration, stages were being built, booth being set up and venders were already stocking them with their simple, yet beautiful wears, Tavi thought that she must at least get something here for-
”And here we are Miss Octavia” Said the young stallion proudly as they stopped in front of their destination.
The Golden Apple was a surprisingly beautiful structure which was situated on the southern side of the town. The outer facade was made from marble and gold trim, the pillars which flanked the entrance were a pair of very well crafted marble stallions; Octavia noted that the hotel would not be at all out of place in Canterlot or Manehatten.
“The hotel is owned by Hoity Totty, the big fancy design mogul from Canterlot” Noted the stallion “he built it here about a year ago. He called AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPLOOSA the gateway to the future of Equestria, and he wanted to be in on it.”
“Ah, I’ve made his acquaintance before, nice enough pony I suppose, i preformed for the opening of his 4th hotel in Las Pegasus"
"Really?"
"Yes, it was quite the event, the food was quite lovely from what i remember"
"Well, i hope that your stay here in AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPLOOSA, is just as good"
"Yes, well...lead the way if you would"
The stallion stood there dumbfounded for a second, seemingly staring off into space just past her
“Ahem”
“Oh right, this way please Miss”
The interior was even more beautiful than the outside, red velvet carpet lined the floor, and the same marble and gold workmanship which was displayed on the outside was even more prominent on the interior, and while Tavi had seen the finest hotels in the finest cities of Equestria the fact that a hotel like this was situated on the frontier made her jaw drop slightly. The Stallion misunderstanding the reason for her awe went on
“Sure is sumtin’ aint it miss?”
“Ah, yes, well, seen one 5 star Hotel, I suppose…”
“O’course, I reckon a pony such as yourself is used to more lavish settings than this”
“It’s a fine building don’t get me wrong”
“That it is, Miss Octavia, now let’s get you checked in”
The attendant was friendly and offered to take Octavia to her room but she declined, then she turned and took her bag from the young stallion.
“I’ll be fine from here on out, thank you”
“Well shoot, no problem Miss Octavia, I’ll be down on the bottom floor in the attaché suite, if you need me…..i pronounced that correct right?”
Octavia was almost dozing at this point “Um yes, now if you’ll excuse me I really have to go and rest my eyes, but thank you again for all your help”
“T’wernt no issue, well, sleep well”
As Octavia turned to go up the elevator to her room she suddenly remembered that she had forgotten to ask the stallion’s name, she turned and asked “Um, good sir”
The stallion stopped and turned “what is it?”
“I feel so embarrassed, what was your name?”
“Why, it’s Braeburn, Miss”
“Thank you” And with that Tavi turned back to the elevator, sweet rest just moments away

The next day
Octavia sat tuning her Cello on the main stage of the town’s large amphitheater as her stage crew rushed to get things ready for the following days “Festivities”. Despite all the noise and the work of power tools and stage equipment going on around her focus was so intent on tuning her cello that the noise didn’t even register with her. The perfect pitch of her cello was all that mattered, she sat there making almost microscopic adjustments to the strings. After all she didn’t become one of the best musicians in Equestria by NOT spending hours tuning her instruments to the point of perfection. Satisfied that her instrument was up to her standards she tested it buy playing the first part of her opener, for 3 minutes her cello made the most beautiful of music, she almost wanted to finish the song but that would have taken too long and besides that no one could really hear her over the sound of the crews working. Finally satisfied with the quality of sound her cello was producing she laid it back into the case and fastened it closed. As she began to lift her case she heard the faint sound of clapping, she turned to see her guide peeking out from behind the curtain…clapping.
“That was quite beautiful Miss Octavia, is that there the song you’re gonna play tomorrow?”
“Well, just the first 20 or so seconds, but yes, yes it is”
“Shoot, I knew dat you were then right pony to play for our here celebration”
Octavia walked toward the storage room where her cello would be stored for the time being, Braeburn however took it and carried it for her himself.
“Well, truth be told, I didn’t expect to play such an event, I’d have thought that ponies on the frontier would have preferred something more….”
“Uh, lively?”
“Something like that”
“Well, all truth be told, you were the town councils 3rd pick to headline the celebration”
“Wow, only their 3rd pick? Who was their first? The Buffalo Bills?” Tavi asked with distinct sarcasm
“No, that was their second pick”
“Of course”
“Well, if’in ya don’t mind me askin’, you’re a high class pony, what made you come all the way out here to preform?”
“It’s personal” she muttered
“Beg pardon Miss?”
“I have my reasons” she said with a slight hint of venom in her tone
“I’m sorry Miss Octavia” Braeburn replied “I didn’t mean to upset you”
Octavia looked over at the stallion, he seemed genuinely hurt by the way she replied
“It’s not your fault, I’m sorry”
Octavia’s stomach began to rumble, she took her watch out of her bag and noted that she hadn’t eaten in 6 hours
“Ya hungry Miss Octavia?”
“Yes, in fact I’m am quite famished”
“Well, I got me here some food vouchers, you can eat free anywhere you want here in AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPLOOSA!”
“Do you have to say Apploosa like that all the time?”
“There’s other ways to say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPOOSA?”
“Ugh, never mind…anyway what is there to eat around ‘these parts’ “?
“Well, we’ve got a nice apple restaurant called “Mrs. Orchards” it’s set up in the middle of the Orchard itself”
“Actually that sounds quite charming, do you have the vouchers?”
“Of course I do”
“Well, let’s go then” Tavi said with a smile

Chapter 2
“So, which way then” asked Octavia as she stepped out into the bright sunlight
“Well, Mrs. Orchards is just outside the town right in the center of the main orchard” replied Braeburn
“Right, you understand I haven’t the foggiest idea of where that is, correct?”
“Well, it’s a good thing that you got a guide now aint it?”
Tavi rolled her eyes “Yes, I suppose it is, do lead on please”
The duo made their way toward the southern end of the town, making their way through the maze of stages, booths and kiosks that made up the fair grounds. Dust kicked up as the crews worked feverishly to tie down and cover up their work
“They say that there might be a storm rolling through here soon, there’s talk of postponin’ the celebration for another day” noted Braeburn
“Great, another day in this damn town” Octavia mumbled under her breath
“Beg pardon, Miss”
“Oh, merely lamenting at the fact that we’ll not be able to enjoy a meal outside is all”
“Well, the storm IS a few hours out still, we should be okay”
“Oh, lovely”
“You know” Braeburn continued “for a performer, you really don’t project too well”
“Beg pardon?”
“Well, it seems like most of what you say is just mumblin’…you should speak up, it’ll save ya time and energy”
“I’ll keep that in mind” Octavia replied with just the slightest hint of sarcasm
The rest of the walk was relatively silent as both ponies were really just focused on the idea of a good lunch. Mrs. Orchards was – as the name implied- located in the main orchard. The path leading to the restaurant was flanked on either side by a row of large apple trees (as its namesake would imply), Octavia couldn’t help but stare.
“Beautiful aint they?” asked Braeburn, apparently noticing Tavi’s awe
“Well, I don’t see many trees IN Canterlot, you’d have to go into the valley for that, haha, and I don’t honestly get out too much”
“Shoot, I thought you traveled all over Equestria, being a big time performer and all”
“Oh, I do, but it’s mostly large urban areas you see”
“I suppose that makes sense”
Unfortunately the manager at Mrs. Orchards had closed the outdoor area of the restaurant due to the oncoming storm, however the restaurant was still open for service. As they entered they were greeted by an older, brown and green colored mare, she hustled over to the duo and gave Braeburn a hug
“Shoot, Braeburn, its been too long since you moseyed on over to my neck of the woods”
“But there aint no forests for a hundred miles”
“Hehe, you always did take things too literal”
Braeburn then turned to Octavia “Miss, Octavia, this here is Mrs. Orchard, of Mrs. Orchard’s, Orchard, this is Miss Octavia, she’s the headliner for the festival”
Mrs. Orchard approached Octavia, and extended her hoof “Welcome to My fine establishment, Mrs. Octavia, “Best service within a thousand miles of where you’re standing”, that’s our slogan and we live up to it” she noted with great pride
Octavia shook her hoof and smiled “Well, I do look forward to experiencing such hospitality” she replied in earnest as she was still quite peckish
“And we look forward to givin’ it, and might I add, Little Braeburn here never did tell me quite how pretty you were in pony”
“Did I mention that she’s also quite senile?” Asked Braeburn
“Oh hush up, I can complement whomever I want too, youngin’, anyway, follow me please”
Mrs. Orchard led them both to a booth in the center of the restaurant “Yall sit down and call me when you’re ready ta order”
“Thank you” Octavia replied as she opened her menu
Looking through she decided (after much deliberation) to try the house special: “The Fancy Apple Fritters”
Octavia looked over her menu at Braeburn “So, what are you having?”
“Well, I always get the apple dumplings, sweetest dern things you e’er tasted”
“I can imagine”
Mrs. Orchard returned “So what’ll it be then?”
Braeburn spoke up “Why I’ll hav-“
“Boy, I know exactly what your order’ll be, you’re gonna have the dumplings with extra caramel dipping sauce, like ya always get”
“Yes ‘um”
“Now” she said as she turned to Octavia “What’ll you have?”
“I’ll take the Fancy Fritter please”
“Now would you like cream or powdered sugar on the top?”
“Both please”
“Adventurous aint we? Ya better watch out, our you're gonna grow up to be big and fat like me when you get older”
“Oh, please, you’ve aged quite well”
“HA! Pretty and a flatterer, I think she’s a keeper Brae, I’ll be back in a jif with yall’s orders”
“Keeper? That’s a good one, ya silly old pony, hahaha” Braeburn called after her as she walked away
Octavia turned to Braeburn, who seemed to sink into his chair out of embarrassment
“Soooooo, what odd weather we’re having today, huh”
“What did she mean by ‘in pony”
“Um, well, ya see, ah, this is kinda embarrassing actually…um…I've been a fan of yours for years ya see”
“Really?”
“In fact I was the one to suggest that we hire you to play the festival, I'm mean the way that you interpret Silver Strings 16th Overture was just beautiful, its actually what I used to convince them that you were worth hiring ya see”
“Hmm, I didn’t take you for a fan of my work”
“Ha, are you kiddin’? The way that you play is just amazing-wait…so you’re not upset?”
“At what? That I have an admirer? If I had a bit for every admirer I had, trust me I’d be a much more wealthy pony. You honestly wouldn’t believe the things that I’ve had to put up with, compared to them you’re quite pleasant”
“Well, that’s a relief. But say, what have you had to put up with anyway? Out of curiosity”
“Stalkers, paparazzi, and more requests for ‘private concerts’ than I can shake a proverbial stick at, things like that really”
“Shoot, sounds taxing”
“It’s just one of the things that come along with being a performer I suppose, the public eye is always the harshest when its fixed on you…but that’s how I make my living and I suppose that I can’t complain so long as I get paid well”
“Well, a the very least there aint no paparazzi here in Apploosa”
“Yes, I suppose not”
Octavia desperately wanted to change the subject
“So, you and Mrs. Orchard are quite close then?”
“I lived with her for a good part of my youth”
“Why didn’t you live with your parents?” Octavia asked out of genuine confusion
Braeburn looked down and didn’t respond
“Oh? I’m so sorry Braeburn, if I’d known-“
“It’s alright, you didn’t know ,after they died, I was sent to Apploosa just as it was getting’ its start, Mrs. Orchard didn’t have no kids of her own, so she took me in and raised me, well, her and about 30 hooves. Apploosa became my family and they’re the best family I could have asked for.”
“That’s quite a sweet way of looking at it all”
“I suppose t’is….speakin’ o’which”
Mrs. Orchard returned with a serving tray with their food
“Now that was the Fritter for the lovely young musician” She said as she handed Octavia her plate “And the dumplings for my dumpling” she said to Braeburn.
“Hehe, thanks Orchard” he replied, embarrassed
“Now yall enjoy ya hear”
Octavia looked down at the fritters, her mouthwatering with anticipation as the full force of the fresh apple aroma hit her like the 3rd Overture of Shooftofsky, as she drove in her taste buds began to sing. Orchard had been right, this WAS the best for a thousand miles. She couldn’t control herself and began to scarf down the fritters one after another.
“Uh, Miss Octavia?” Braeburn asked from across the table
Tavi realized what she was doing and the invertible mess that she had made of herself
“Well, don’t I feel dignified?” she lamented
“Hehehe, trust me you aint the first ta go apples for those fritters”
“Ad she won’t be the last!” Orchard yelled from the kitchen “Bathrooms to the left “
Tavi got up and walked over to the bathrooms to clean herself off. She looked in the mirror to see that she had gotten powdered sugar and syrup all over her face, and even some in her mane, it almost reminded her of the night she….
“No” Tavi said aloud “Enough of that”
She filled the sink with water and dunked her face in. She dried herself off and went back out to her table where Braeburn had already finished his dumplings and was onto his second helping.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I ordered us another round of food for us”
“Oh thank you, but I'm full I'm afraid”
“Hehe, I figured as much, they’re bagging it now, and I just love me these dumplin’s”
Octavia smiled and went back to her seat to wait for her fritters. Not long after Mrs. Orchard walked back out with a box in a bag.
“Well, I figured that you could use one for the road, I put the extra cream in there for ya, I know you like it” she said with a smile
“Well, I must say that you really are a master of your craft, Mrs. Orchard”
“Like I said Miss Octavia, we sure do aim to please”
Braeburn finished his dumplings “Great as always, so what’s the damage?”
“I'm offended Brae, you know that it’s always on the house for you, and your new lady friend”
“Well, she’s not, I mean”
“I'm just teasin’, this boy never could take a joke”
“I can tell”
Octy picked up her bag and walked out with Braeburn into the Orchard. The wind was picking up as the storm approached and the clouds grew darker.
“We should get back to the Hotel soon” noted Braeburn.
“Really, ya don’t say?”
The Duo made their way out of the orchard and into the town where the storm had just started to hit, the clouds burst and the rain came pouring down onto the fairgrounds, instantly soaking them both, thankfully, they both made it to the hotel before the storm got too bad. They looked at each other, both wet and shivering, and Octavia couldn’t help but laugh.
“What’s so funny?”
“Haahahahaha, I have no idea, but I can’t stop laughing ahahahahah!”
“Well, okay then…well, I'm gonna go to bed I suppose, good night Miss Octavia”
“Hehehe, good night Braeburn”
As the young stallion walked away Octavia felt something…something that she couldn’t place her hoof on, but she felt comfortable around the young stallion, he wasn’t like many of those she knew back in Canterlot, maybe…she….

Chapter 3
Octavia woke up to the hard thump of rain on the roof of the hotel. The storm had continued through the night and had no real signs of ceasing. After a few days (And a few sleepless nights) the fair grounds were dry enough for the Anniversary celebration to proceed as planned. Octavia played to a packed audience and was toasted the next day as “The best dern headliner we ever did have”.
After another final whirlwind night with Braeburn she had to return to Canterlot.
“Well Brae” Tavi said as she walked up the gangplank to her train car “I must say, this truly was one of the best concerts I’ve ever preformed at”
“I can’t imagine why, I mean we were delay for- Oh…right”
“Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me already” she teased with a pout on her face
“No! NO! Of course not, it’s just ugh-”
“Damn you’re gullible” Tavi remarked as she finished her ascent, she placed her things on the floor of her cabin, the door closed behind her and she went to the window.
“Hey, look me up if you’re ever in Canterlot, k?”
“Well, I got a cousin in Ponyville, I might just drop by for a spell then go on an “expedition” of the capital before I get there”
“Cheeky bastard” Tavi remarked as the train began to pull away
She sat down in her booth and curled up to her pillow, memories of the previous days kept her mind “occupied” for the rest of the trip back home…
