Tricky Merrylark is a unicorn making a living in Ponyville as a stage performer. All his life he's dreamed of being a soldier, and serving under Shining Armor now would leave him satisfied. Every year he makes a trip to Canterlot to attempt to gain entry into Celestia's Royal Guard, and every year he leaves denied.

One day, a certain lavender unicorn comes to Ponyville, bringing with her more excitement and happenings than the town has ever seen. This only ignites the flame under Tricky's hooves, as he and his friends continue living their lives in the background.

Tricky knows that someday, he'll be someone special. It's only a matter of time and effort.
