A Midnight Fairy Tale
What a Birthday Present.
Load Full StoryKaylinn walked around her guild, the other mages looking at her with pride as she came in with the pay from her last mission. Her guilds master looked at her with a happy face. “Well, Kay if this isn’t a fine treat for Sylph’s Heart, I don’t know what is. We haven’t been getting much publicity since the Tenrou group of Fairy tail is back and it’s nice to have someone bring in some high level requests.” Kaylinn strode up to her master.
“Master Donavan, you can count on me!” Kaylinn stood a little less than five feet tall and didn’t quite seem over powering. Her emerald green hair came down to her waist in curly locks. Her eyes were aqua orbs like that of the ocean and her frame was slight. “If I wasn’t on a quest when the Grand Magic Game we surely would have won!” Kaylinn said her confidence abounding. “I would have loved to be able to see just what that Natsu Dragneel can do first hand.” She continued a smile on her face that portrayed nothing but excitement.
“Kaylinn, you are our only S-class wizard, we would have had no chance against those monsters of Fairy tail.” Master Donavan said looking at Kaylinn with a bit of sadness in his eyes. Kaylinn looked at her master with sadness brimming in her eyes too.
“Master, please have more confidence. This guild that you have built from the ground up is nothing less than amazing. Fairy tail’s Makarov would have a hard time finding fault with our small but rising group.” She turned around and walked to her room.
Kaylinn woke up in the middle of the night and turned to her side sadness continuing in her heart. I wish he would trust us more, I wish he would trust himself more. She thought as she caressed the grey insignia on her arm. This guild is amazing. We just have to be more patient, that is all. Her thoughts continued as she fell to sleep once more and dreams overtook her worry.
Creatures about her height were staring at her. All of these creatures had hooves for feet and different hued furs. She guessed they were of equine nature but, she had never seen creatures like this, aside from the Exeeds, the small cat creatures from Edolas. Each stood upright and had a tail and a mark on them that looked somewhat similar to the guild markings that were prevalent on mages. “What is this creature?” One of the equine creatures asked. “She bears a cutie mark.” Another said. “Has anypony ever seen anything like this before?” Hmm… Ponies huh… Kaylinn thought as she drifted once more into the waking world.
Kaylinn awoke in the morning remembering none of her strange dream but, feeling off none-the-less. She picked up her bag of gold, determined to shake off this feeling, and went down the stairs and looked for Lix and Rasmin. Both were found having an eating contest with a group gathered around them. “Don’t think you’ll win this time Rasmin!” Lix’s high pitched voice came out muffled by the fish he was stuffing into his small Exeed mouth.
“Try as you might you won’t beat me!” Rasmin responded in an equally muffled manner. I’ll let them finish their bout before I get their attention. Kaylinn thought as she chuckled. Lix and Rasmin were constantly in some kind of competition. Rasmin usually won but, Lix had a couple points as well. A couple minutes later Rasmin was crowned champion of this competition. “Maybe next time kitty cat.” Rasmin said in with a mocking, but friendly, tone. Kaylinn shook her head with a laugh.
“Rasmin, Lix, you want to go out with me and play some games? I just got back with a payday and I am in need of some accompaniment to lighten my load.” She said over the small crowd. Without further word Lix and Rasmin ran up to her and hugged the hell out of her. “You guys ready to go?” Lix and Rasmin looked at each other, looking slightly guilty.
“Sorry, not this time. We have… Some things to do.” Rasmin said his eyes shifting back and forth.
“Yeah, things…” The Exeed trailed. Then they ran off shouting apologies over their shoulders. Kaylinn shook her head and looked around at her guild. We will be the best. She thought as she walked out and headed towards a bar near their guild that she frequented.
“Another!” Kaylinn cried out slurring her speech in her drunken state as she slammed down an empty tankard. More ale was poured into the container. After she was done downing the next tankard she stood up and decided to go back to her guild. She put the money on the bar and walked off, not bothering to count out whether or not it was the right sum of gold. She staggered out of the bar and walked off towards her guild in the dark, hiccupping a bit in drunken pleasure. She hummed a happy tune in her drunken state thinking about the odd dream she had had last night. Then, she ran into a wall and fell down smacking her head on the ground as she fell.
Dark
She awoke with a massive hangover. The brightness around her told her she was outside. “Gods damn it all!” She exclaimed as her head pounded in the light. “Why didn’t anyone come and find me?” She questioned no one in particular. The sound of something dropping and breaking sounded out behind her. She turned around and saw a small bipedal horse creature with red fur and a horn. The creature screamed in terror and ran off leaving the remains of the shattered bowl on the ground. Well, where ever I am, it’s not home and I did not make a very good first impression. Kaylinn thought as she stood up slowly, trying not to make the pain in her head hurt any worse than it already did. “Well, off to figure out where the hell I am,” she said as she made her way towards the direction that the equine creature ran. She walked for a few minutes before she saw anything. A small village was displayed out in front of her and, what she assumed were guards, were walking towards her.
“Halt in the name of Celestia our grand queen!” One of the ponies said. He had wings and looked to be the highest ranked of the group. He was taller than her by a head and had black armor on. All of them had their spears pointed at her.
She stopped moving and lifted up her hands in the air. “Um… Have I done anything wrong?” She asked the ponies.
“I said halt! You had better halt your tongue to creature.” The winged pony said to her.
“You know people don’t like it when you’re rude right.” Kaylinn said anger and annoyance apparent in her voice. “Look, I don’t know where I am, least of all what happened. So, if someone would please be so kind as to tell at least where the hell I am and point me in the direction of Fiore. I don’t know who Celestia is and to be honest with you I don’t care, I just want to get home.” She continued her anger rising with each word. “Today is my gods damned birthday and I want it to be good for once!” She walked up to the rude pony and looked him. He tried to take a swing at her with his spear and she deftly jumped out of its path. “ROAR OF THE OCEAN DRAGON!” She screamed, mid-jump. Sea green energy coalesced in front of her mouth and burst forward in a massive stream of energy. The spell slammed into the pony and sent him flying. She felt a tingling on her back and felt her magic get sapped away. She hit the ground and went down on one knee. The butt of a spear hit her in the back of her head and she passed out.
Dark
When she woke it was dark and it was getting colder. “Great, I slept through my birthday. My head hurts and I am in jail.” She said as she noticed that she was chained to the wall with some kind of sapping powered chain. “Wonderful.”
Several days later after the sun went down a midnight blue mare with a mane like the night sky, a horn and wings came down she wore a simple black dress that went down to her ankles. “So you are the creature that they found.” She said with a rise to her brow.
“I have a name you know.” Kaylinn said. “I hate being called a creature, my name is Kaylinn damn it.”
“Ok, Kaylinn. Why are you here?” The beautiful mare asked.
“That’s something we both would like to know.” Kaylinn said sullenly wondering if her friends were missing her.
“I am Luna, princess of the night.” Luna said. “You seem to have a Cutie mark as well. We have never seen one on anything but ponies but, yours is, peculiar. What is it that you do?”
“Cutie mark?” Kaylinn questioned. Luna motioned towards her arm. “This,” she said looking at her guilds insignia, “is my guilds insignia. I am an S-class mage from the guild Sylph’s Heart.” She continued with pride. “I have ocean dragon slayer magic.” She further explained. Sadness rimmed her eyes as she remembered her mother Aecorus.
“We did ascertain that you possessed magic, but magic meant for slaying dragons. Who taught you this form of spell working?” Luna asked with interest.
“My,” Kaylinn paused wondering why she was felt like it was ok to trust this mare, “mother, Aecorus, the Ocean Dragon.” She continued confusion playing out on her face.
“You look nothing like a dragon, how could one be your mother and why would a dragon teach dragon slayer magic?” Luna asked bursting with curiosity.
“She took care of me for as long as I can remember and she taught me,” tears spilled out as she spoke, “so that I could defend myself. So that I would have something to remember her by….” She continued crying silently looking at the floor of the prison.
“I am… sorry to hear that…” Luna said apologetically and more than a little embarrassed. “I don’t think you are evil though, so, why don’t you come with me.” Luna continued while unlocking the gate and releasing the cuff at Kaylinn’s leg with magic. Kaylinn felt her magic seep back into her body. “You may need a little time to heal your magic reserves but, other than that you should be fine.” Luna finished. Now that Kaylinn was standing she found that she was about the same height as Luna, minus the horn.
“You got any water? I am parched.” Kaylinn asked to which Luna’s reply was to make a glass of water appear. Kaylinn took the water and drank it down greedily. “Thank you.” She said as she finished the water.
It had been a few months since Kaylinn had first appeared in this strange land and, while she was still homesick and wondering how her guild was doing, she had come to really like Luna and found that she could have a good friend in her. She had learned that this was the Solar Empire of Equestria and that Celestia was the queen of this land and Luna’s sister. She had also learned that the races of this world were: Earth Ponies, Pegasi, Unicorns, Crystal Ponies, Bat Ponies, Zebras, Changlings, Shadeskaul, Ent, Bison, Griffons, Diamond Dogs, Minotaurs and Dragons. She had yet to find out what had caused her to come to this world in the first place, nor how to return to her own world. The other ponies had yet to come to terms with her but, they no longer treated her like a monster. She had also met the Alicorn Twilight Sparkle, and her friends Rarity, Apple Jack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash. They were somewhat questioning of Kaylinn but didn’t see her as a danger to the kingdom. She wished to learn more about the dragons of this land but, the only one that was near was a baby dragon named Spike, whom worked with Twilight Sparkle. Kaylinn looked through the books in the library searching for a book on the dragons of this world. The guard that was supposed to be watching her was fast asleep at one of the many desks. The sun had fallen below the horizon many hours ago and she had been searching since mid-day in this massive library. “Would you like some help?” Asked a voice from behind her she identified as Luna.
“Yeah, I am looking for a book on the dragons of this world but, I can’t figure out the cataloguing system that is used in this library.” Kaylinn said never looking back. Luna sidled up beside her and began to search as well.
After a few hours they decided that it would be best to give up the search until later. A winded Pegasus burst into the room and handed Luna a note written, from what Kaylinn had seen, by Celestia. “What’s going on Luna?” Kaylinn asked her Alicorn friend.
“Changelings have attacked our southern borders and have taken Baltimare.” Luna said slowly. “I must go now. You find a safe place to be and don’t leave the castle.” She finished.
“No, I will fight with you. I have fought many a creature before and I can be of help. Where I am from, we help our friends.” Kaylinn countered.
“Very well, if that is your choice, then thank you.” Luna acquiesced. “Then, to war.” She said as they exited the room.
