Chapters Ulfric Stormcloak sat upon his throne rubbing at his temples with the Jagged Crown sitting in his lap. It had been a long and frustrating day for Skyrim’s High King as he had just finished dealing with around forty whiney nobles and merchants of Windhelm. He had listened to them complain incessantly about the new taxes he’d had to impose on them and everyone else to pay for not one but two bloody wars. The two conflicts had left Skyrim nearly bankrupt and money was needed for the coffers. It had taken him almost all day to explain to the self important and very obnoxious nobles that this would not change to the way it was before. He had jokingly entertained the thought of using the Voice on them, but had opted to be more diplomatic in his approach and send them away after threatening to raise their taxes had been just as satisfying. The taxes were not even unfair, and were quite reasonable; Ulfric had even lowered the taxes for the non Nords in Skyrim to be equal to the taxes paid by the Nords in the hope of bringing more trade to Skyrim and make the country a more attractive place to live. More citizens meant more tax payers. This had also undoubtedly upset said nobles; as many of them wanted nothing more than to see these foreigners thrown out, whereas Ulfric himself was more or less indifferent about the whole deal.
Seven Years of war had shown all of Nirn that Skyrim was meant to be independent and free of meddling from outsiders, whether man or mer, and High King Ulfric Stormcloak would be damned if he would let his country fall from financial collapse because of the complaints of some self entitled milk drinkers who had done little if anything to contribute to that independence. As the monarch stewed on his throne, the Palace of Kings suddenly shook as something landed heavily upon its battlements. While most men would worry, Ulfric smiled as he knew that this was no cause for alarm, just an old friend answering a summons. The High King looked expectantly to the massive ash wood doors, on each side was a warrior carrying massive battle axes and dressed in good solid Nordic Carved armor. The Skyrim Royal Guards were without a doubt one of the most feared fighting forces in Tamriel. While they had not been created in time for the war of independence with the Cyrodiilic Empire, they had been in the war against the Aldmeri Dominion, and proven themselves to be fierce, unbreakable and loyal warriors that would defend King and realm to the death.
The heavy doors opened and a tall figure entered the throne room, the wind blow his long dark blue cloak about him as he walked through the doors. At his side hung a sleek scimitar; and he was covered head to toe in stunning golden armor with a crested, masked helm, showing it to be of Dwemer origin. The tall figure approached the royal throne and knelt respectfully while removing his helm, revealing a strong, pale face with a pair of deep blue eyes and a head of short blond hair. The man was a Nord and had a long and ugly looking scar down his left cheek.
“Rurik old friend, you needn’t bow to me. If anything I should be bowing before you; slayer of Alduin.” said the king standing with a friendly smile.
“Of course old friend, it is good to see you again.” The Nord said with a kind smile.
“So, how have things been going in Markarth?” asked the High King.
“Excellent Your Highness, excellent: The engineering corps have a thousand Animunculi refurbished with several hundred more, well on the way. We now have nearly quadruple the machines we had at the end of the civil war when we took Solitude.” reported Rurik.
“This is good news. It seems like only yesterday we were pitching Imperial troops off of the walls of Solitude.” said Ulfric with nostalgia as he remembered the days when they had fought shoulder to shoulder against the Empire.
“Aye, that it does; those were good days.” agreed Rurik with a nod.
“Yes, back when I had less gray in my hair: and yet you don’t seem to have aged a day.” said Ulfric raising an eyebrow suspiciously.
“Uh… Good dieting and exercise?” replied Rurik with a shrug and sheepish grin causing the two of them to laugh a bit at the silly reaction.
“It has been too long old friend.” said the king.
“That it has Ulfric, that it has; though I doubt you called me here to reminisce about the good ol’ days.” said Rurik with a serious tone.
“Well, down to business then.” said Ulfric motioning to the war room. In the days of the civil war with the Empire and the war against the Aldmeri Dominion, the room had served not only as a war room, but Ulfric’s personal office; a function that was continued to this day. Inside of the room stood Ulfric’s court wizard and old friend Wuunferth the Unliving, his steward Jorlief, and Ulfric’s new Houscarl, and commander of the royal guard; Tancred Silvanius. With Galmar Stone-Fist, Ulfric’s former Houscarl now the commander of Skyrim’s armies, Ulfric had gotten a new Houscarl in the form of Tancred, an Imperial who had fought doggedly for his freedom to worship Talos in the Stormcloak ranks and proven loyal to a fault to the High King. The plate armored warrior had his helmet under his arm with a sleek katana hanging at his side and a look of utter disdain in his intimidating brown eyes. His dark hair and strong, scarred face made him a fierce looking opponent and this was backed up by his skill with a blade, which was legendary among the ranks of Skyrim’s army.
It was also a well known fact that Tancred and Rurik openly hated each other. The Imperial was a shining example of chivalry and honor on the battlefield, and fought his opponents head on in honorable combat. His Nord rival on the other hand was a master engineer and deadly battle mage who specialized in Dwemer Animunculi and weapons. Rurik was a genius simply put; he had always been a tinkerer as a child and eventually had gone to the Imperial College of Engineers in Cyrodiil’s Imperial City, where he proved to be adept with Dwemer technology. Part of the reason that the Stormcloaks had won the war against the Empire was due to his careful instruction to Ulfric’s smiths, and his knowledge of ancient Dwemer automatons. During the war, the Imperial commander, General Tullius, had thought himself fighting ill equipped rebels: until the battle for Whiterun. Whiterun became a turning point when Imperial soldiers and Whiterun’s guards found themselves completely outmatched by Stormcloak soldiers carrying Dwemer weaponry and shields backed up by refurbished Dwemer automatons. Whiterun fell in literally one hour thanks to the combined strength of the automatons and the determination of Ulfric’s troopers. To Tancred, this way of war was dishonorable; why send machines to do what a warrior should do? To Rurik however, if a machine died, a soldier lived to fight another day; and ensuring that Skyrim’s men and women came home to their families in one piece was more than honorable in Rurik’s opinion. This clashing of personalities had led to fist fights on more than one occasion, usually ending with Tancred on the flat of his back: the Imperial had to admit that the engineer did have one mean right hook.
“Coward.” spat Tancred.
“Blowhard.” replied Rurik.
“Come now children, no fighting no biting.” said King Ulfric with an annoyed tone stepping between the two. While Rurik broke eye contact and approached the table with the map of Skyrim, Tancred continued to glare at him with disgust and hostility.
“So Your Majesty; what is the situation?” asked Rurik.
“Well, Wuunferth will explain more, but the issues we have been having lately are rather strange storms. They have occurred over Markarth and Morthol already, no damage was caused but my people are worried. They are reported to appear as dark swirling storm clouds with lightning jumping around inside of the eye.” explained Ulfric.
“With all due respect Majesty, what do wish me to do? I know a great deal about science but I cannot control the weather.”
“Wuunferth, your turn.” said Ulfric stepping back and allowing the elderly mage to take over where he had left off.
“My scrying has determined that the next one will appear over Falkreath in about a day. While we have seen our share of storms in Skyrim, these are a first. We know nothing about them and we cannot tell if they are a naturally occurring event or something more sinister. That is where you come in.” Rurik did not like where this was going one bit. “With your connection with your dragon friend, you would be able to get close enough to observe this storm and tell us what you see and how it acts.” said Wuunferth.
“Odahving will not like this one bit.” replied Rurik matter of factly.
“There is plenty of gold in it for you.” said Ulfric.
“How much?” asked Rurik knowing he would probably regret it later.
“Ten thousand Septims.” replied Ulfric.
“Very well, I will do it.” agreed the engineer, knowing he would definitely regret it later. “Now, is there anything else I need to know?”
“Yes, I want to meet up with my student Stiggar in Falkreath before you observe the storm, he will be taking additional notes from the ground.” said Wuunferth.
“Alright, sounds like a plan, now I just need to get some supplies from home and convince my large and scaly friend to agree to fly me into a storm the likes of which has never been seen on Nirn, even before my people disappeared.” replied Rurik.
“Just be careful Rurik. I don’t need you getting killed because of this.” said Ulfric sincerely.
“Don’t worry about me your majesty; I am the soul of caution.”
“It is not you I am worried about; it is telling that wife of yours that you got killed on a job I assigned you!” chuckled Ulfric.
“Oh come on Ulfric, she isn’t that bad!” teased Rurik.

The Next Day.
Although it took a great deal of convincing, Odahving grudgingly complied to aid Rurik. The old dragon was less than thrilled with the idea, but did not trust other dragons with the life of the man who was like a brother to him. Rurik had also prepared for a long journey despite riding on a dragon; it’s always better to be prepared than end up only wishing you were. He wore his suit of Dwemer armor, which had multiple enchantments. The boots helped him resist fire and made him stronger while the gauntlets made his attacks with his weapons and his fists more brutal, while his helm was an ancient Dwarven artifact known as the Visage of Mzund: which was enchanted to use moisture in the air and even the wearer’s own sweat to deploy a hot blast of steam. His breastplate was also a boon as it regenerated his stamina and healed wounds. On Rurik’s left hand was his wedding ring; his wife would hunt him down and make him wish he were dead if he forgot that: while on his right hand Ahzidal’s ring of Arcana, which allowed him to cast the spells ignite and freeze. About his neck hung an Amulet of Talos: being Dragonborn, he felt a strong connection to the divine who in mortal life had also been Dragonborn.
For weaponry, the Nord chose his matched Skyforge Steel daggers, while his main weapon was the sleek and deadly scimitar known as Windshear: even a strike on an opponent’s shield was equivalent to being assaulted by a gale force wind. With the weapons set; Rurik filled his potion satchel with the musts: Health, Stamina and resist Magicka potions, throwing in some cure poison and cure disease potions for good measure. The last things he packed were more of a ‘just in case’ scenario as he had on occasion been invited to the court of Jarl Dengeir when he was passing through Falkreath and he preferred to look his best. These were fine clothes and boots from Radiant Raiment and a set of robes that had once belonged to the former Emperor of the Empire, Titus Mede II: who now lay six feet under in a tomb in the Imperial City, courtesy of a Dark Brotherhood assassin and old friend of Rurik’s.
Just to be on the safe side; Rurik grabbed the Aetherium Staff; an ancient artifact designed by the Dwemer that could summon a Dwemer automaton to aid him in combat or menial tasks. After grabbing a few more items, Rurik left the manor in the care of his Houscarl, Calder; and headed for the stables where he was to meet Odahving and fly to Falkreath. It was early morning: the sun had not even risen and all was quiet and peaceful. Despite peace and quiet and the possibility of a nice day, Rurik could not stifle the feeling of an impending disaster on the horizon.

The flight to Falkreath itself took about twenty minutes. Rather than landing in the city, Rurik had Odahving land outside while he walked to the city to meet Stiggar at the local Inn. The streets were quiet as it was early yet, and no one save the town guards were out and about. It did not take Rurik too long to find the Inn and he walked in.
“Come on in, we just put some new logs on the fire.” said the inn keeper. Rurik nodded politely in response and found a chair to sit in. There were very few people at the inn due to the hour; it was just passed six in the morning.
“Nice suit of armor you have there friend: Dwarven I take it?” asked a guard who was on his break.
“Aye, that it is.” replied Rurik. Dwemer armor; while not as strong as Daedric or ebony armor; was still a highly sought after item in Skyrim, and many people envied Dwemer armor because of its steadfastness and craftsmanship. After chatting with the guard for a few minutes, a tall young Nord man walked into the bar. He was thin and clean shaven with blonde hair and blue eyes and wore a mage apprentice robe.
“Mr. Stiggar I presume?” asked Rurik rising from his chair.
“Yes sir, I am Stiggar: You must be Lord Rurik!” said the young Nord.
“Last I checked I was.” chuckled Rurik. After a bit of chatting: the two of them walked out to the hill in Falkreath overlooking a large lake. Rurik called Odahving and the three of them waited for the storm to arrive.
“This would be a great spot to build a house you know.” said Stiggar.
“Meh. I prefer to live in a closer proximity to a village or city: it’s too isolated out here.” replied Rurik thinking of his beloved Windhelm manor, Hjerim.
“I would prefer the top of a good high mountain.” Odahving chimed in.
“As a Dovah should.” said Rurik with a smile. The three of them chuckled and continued to watch the sky: sure enough, the dark clouds that were hanging over Falkreath began to swirl in a cyclonic manner.
“That’s our cue my friend.” said Rurik climbing onto Odahviing’s neck.
“Very well; hold on tight Fahdon!” replied Odahviing as the drake took to the air with his friend to investigate the odd storm while Stiggar furiously jotted down notes from his place on the ground. Everything seemed to be going fine as Rurik observed and even took notes: until the lightning started. This was no natural lightning; it was much brighter and much more intense.
“Rurik; we have to get out of here! I may be a Dovah, but I am not immune to the effects of lightning.” shouted the drake over the booming of the thunder.
“Very well Odahviing: they are not paying us enough to get ourselves killed, lets-” before Rurik could finish, a blinding white bolt of lightning lashed out of nowhere and struck both man and drake.

The bright flash momentarily blinded Stiggar; causing him to drop his journal and quill and rub his eyes: once his vision returned; Stiggar looked around in panic: the storm had simply disappeared, and worse than that Odahviing and Rurik were nowhere to be found. Stiggar grabbed his notes and ran back towards Falkreath. How would he explain all of this to his master? Let alone High King Ulfric?

“Are you alright my friend?” asked Rurik inspecting the huge trench in the ground that Odahving’s crash landing had left and thinking of how proficient that such a trench could be if used in warfare.
“I lost a few scales, but no broken bones or other serious wounds.” said Odahving with a heavy sigh. “How about you Fahdon?” he asked.
“I took a little tumble, but I am fine. It will take more than that to keep me down.” replied Rurik.
“You truly are a Dovah in the body of a Jul!” chuckled the Dragon.
“Thank you old friend; but now to business: we need to find our bearings and get home. I did not plan on getting lost in the middle of a forest. I can't even see any land marks around."
“That is most Problematic.” said Odahving.
“You are telling me; I knew I would regret taking this damnable job.” said Rurik punching a nearby tree in frustration.
“Calm yourself Fahdon, we will figure this out and be back home in no time.”
“Your optimism never ceases to amaze me Odahving; at least we have that.” replied Rurik with a half smile. “Anyhow, first thing is first, I should take inventory and see what we have to work with. I hope I didn't lose anything in the crash landing.”
“Agreed Dovahkiin, here take these supplies.” replied Odahving. The drake lowered his head to allow Rurik to get to a secondary satchel full of food and mead that was tied around his neck; this secondary emergency sack came in very handy for long journeys, and Odahving always had it with him on the mountain he lived on top of. By Rurik’s calculations, it contained about two weeks of food that could last around three if rationed correctly. His father had taught him to always be prepared for the worst; and that had saved his life on more than one occasion. The next step was to find a place to make camp as the clearing they had crash landed in was not a preferable spot in Rurik’s mind.
Being an engineer, he preferred to have the high ground in order to see the surrounding landscape, and be able to pick out any approaching danger, and eliminate it at range: He who had the high ground had the advantage. Rurik looked to the sky and saw plenty of cloud cover, while off in the distance, was the peak of a mountain.
“Odahving, go ahead and get some rest, I am going to scout ahead.” said Rurik closing up the satchel.
“Of course Fahdon, I stay here and await your call.” replied the drake. Even though he had only lost a few scales, he was grateful for the rest.
Rurik placed the Visage of Mzund back upon his head and prepared to move out. Once he was finished double checking his inventory, he walked forward into the dark of the forest; not knowing what lie within: but what did he have to fear? He was Dragonborn.

Twilight Sparkle opened her eyes slowly; her vision swimming as she awoke and the first thing she felt was a warm, sticky liquid on her head. As her vision returned, she realized that it was blood: the next thing she felt was pain from the wound on her head. Slowly, the lavender Unicorn took in her surroundings. She was in chains, which were built from iron and fastened to her hooves, and a small ring was fastened to her horn. Twilight could tell that this ring left her magic utterly useless. She was across from Rarity, who was also chained and had a ring on her horn. It had started as a nice relaxing day; Twilight and Rarity had been going out to Zecora’s hut to visit her, but halfway out to the Zebra’s hut, they had been ambushed.
The Diamond Dogs had come out of nowhere; and the next thing they knew, they had been captured and chained: that was about a day ago. Twilight’s head was throbbing where she had been knocked over the head with the butt of a spear for mouthing off.
“Twilight darling! Are you alright!?” asked Rarity: the marshmallow colored unicorn’s normally pristine royal blue mane and tail were an absolute mess, and her sapphire eyes were filled with worry for her friend.
“I’ll be fine Rarity; are you ok?”
“Yes, I am alright.” replied Rarity.
“Let that be a lesson to you mouthy purple pony! That’s what happen when you mouth off!” said the obnoxious and conniving voice of the Diamond Dog leader as he jabbed an armor clad finger towards Twilight. These dogs were odd compared to the ones who had kidnapped Rarity around two years ago. They were much better equipped, head to claw in mostly iron armor, while the leader was clad in steel plate: and it was odd as Diamond Dogs ate gems for sustenance much like some dragons, and as such rarely sold them for profit; and the armor they were wearing was costly.
“Leave her alone you Ruffian!” snapped Rarity, causing the Diamond Dog to turn and stalk towards her.
“Snotty pony learns slowly!” growled the dog as he slapped the purple maned mare across the face. “She should learn to shut up!”
“How dare you strike a lady!” Rarity shouted.
“And I will do it again!” yelled the dog raising its b paw once more.
A high pitched whistle followed by the loud ‘THUNK’ of plate armor being penetrated made the dog stop and look down. Protruding from the dog’s knee was a huge icicle: making the dog howl in pain. He howled even more when a second ice spike slammed through the other knee; causing him to fall onto his back yelping and screaming in pain.
“What on Equiis is that!?” said Rarity with alarm looking at down the path in the direction they had been traveling towards. There; barring the path was a tall bipedal figure with icy mist swirling in its ‘claws’. It appeared to be wearing armor made of gold; and its face was covered by a similarly colored masked helmet which had a crest on top. Wrapped about its shoulders was a navy blue cloak, and at its side hung a sleek steel scimitar.
“That’s quite enough.” boomed the newcomer’s deep, heavily accented voice.

Rurik had been walking through the dense forest for around twenty minutes when he heard what sounded like talking. The engineer moved slowly towards the voices at a crouch in a slow and cautious manner: he was not taking any chances. He moved up behind a large tree and took out a spy glass: and then cautiously peeked around the tree and took a look. What he saw was definitely interesting to say the least. He saw a band of dog like creatures wearing armor, carrying spears and shields; and they had prisoners. The prisoners were not other dogs, but ponies: brightly colored ponies at that. Both of them were unicorns, and they looked terrified. Carefully, he moved forwards, and looked again through his spy glass. He was shocked to hear the ponies talk: he had seen many strange things in Tamriel, but this was certainly a first. The conversation was now beginning to sound like an argument. When the mutt in plate armor hit the white one, the Nord felt his blood boil: these ponies were sentient beings being taken against their will, possibly to a life of slavery. It was time to deliver some good old fashioned Nord Justice. The dog shouted and raised his paw again, and it was all the reason Rurik needed to engage the target.

The lead dog howled in pain as Rurik stalked forward; the other diamond dogs held their spears in a defensive manner, but he could tell that they were completely terrified of him.
“Boo.” he growled dangerously. The diamond dogs dropped their weapons and ran off screaming into the forest, leaving their leader to fend for himself against the golden monster. Rurik walked over to the dog that was whimpering in agony, his sabbatons crushing small stones beneath them; and knelt at the dog’s side.
“So, what were you doing with them?” asked Rurik courteously, poking his thumb towards the ponies, who sat with awed expressions on their faces.
“Leave me alone monster!” spat the dog.
“Wrong answer.” replied the Nord simply; reaching down and twisting one of the spikes embedded in the dog’s knees, causing the creature to scream in agony.
“Now, I will ask again: what were you doing with them? Please chose your words carefully: I am not a patient individual at the moment.” said Rurik.
“Okay! Okay! We were hired to catch ponies from town and bring ponies to work in mines!” said the dog quickly.
“Where is this town and how many more ponies are there?” asked Rurik.
“One day due east of here; and it is filled with ponies! That was all diamond dogs were doing, I swear!” he whimpered. Rurik however knew by the dog’s body language that this was not at all the whole truth. Rurik yanked the ice spike out before slamming one of his sabbatons down on the injured knee; causing more pained yelping.
“Do you really think I am that stupid!? Tell me the truth, mutt! One: you had too few troops to take an entire town, and two; why did you have just them if there was an entire town? Out with it!” spat the now ill tempered Nord.
“We were hired! Employer told us he wanted purple pony for ransom! We found her and her friend in the forest and caught them!” sobbed the dog.
“So, you’re a sell sword; fools like you should learn that there are some jobs that should not be taken. Who hired you?”
“Don’t know who he was: He was pony, like white one and purple one; but he stayed in shadows and wore black cloak so I could not see him.” replied the dog with a shrug. Rurik knew he was telling the truth; plus the sun was beginning to set, and he wanted to get to a better location before setting up camp.
“Give me the keys to their chains, and I will help you instead of just killing you and searching your body; luckily for you I am feeling merciful today.” said Rurik yanking the other ice spike out swiftly and readying his healing magic. “I will heal you in exchange for the keys: and allow you to leave unharmed, but keep in mind that if I see you or your associates again, I will not be so merciful.” finished Rurik. The dog did as told before the Nord healed him and allowed him to leave.
Once the dog had left, Rurik walked over to the ponies to release them from their chains.
“Are you all alright?” he asked the equines who were still staring at him with awe and fear. After the initial shock wore off they shook their heads up and down.
“Okay, good: now I am not going to harm you, I am going to get these chains and rings off of you and I will get you home.” One by one he unlocked the chains before discarding tem in the bushes with the keys.
“Thank you.” said the lavender unicorn mare with genuine gratitude.
“All in a day’s work, your thanks are not required but welcome.” replied Rurik.
“All the same; thank you: My name is Twilight Sparkle.” she said offering a hoof like a man or elf would offer a hand shake. Rurik accepted the hoof shake and introduced himself.
“I am Rurik Skull-Taker; pleased to meet you Miss Twilight.” replied the tall creature returning the gesture before standing back up to his full height and removing his helmet.

Twilight found herself intrigued and at the same time terrified of ‘Rurik’ as he called himself, due in small part to his last name. It was obvious from his voice that he was male; and as he removed his helmet, Twilight found in front of her a creature she had never before seen in Equestria. He was tall; very tall: a full head taller in fact than Princess Celestia. He resembled a tall and more upright version of an ape, but was clearly intelligent and judging from his armor and how he wielded several types of magic; came from an advanced race of some sort. He also had very little hair: save for a golden, short cropped mane atop his head and two little strips over his eyes. His flesh was pale, and a long scar ran down the left cheek, making him appear at a glance as if he had a constant, grotesque, half smile. He had intense deep blue eyes which she felt were boring into her soul and calculating everything about her, yet also had a kind peacefulness to them: but the last name frightened her and she found herself involuntarily shaking.
“S-S-S-Skull-Taker?!” she asked nervously. Rarity backed away a little bit with a nervous look at Rurik; at which he rolled his eyes and sighed.
“The name dates back nearly three thousand five hundred years; our clan was renowned for our combat prowess, particularly due to the grisly trophies my ancestors kept in their settlements. The name stuck and has not been changed for millennia; we are quite civilized now; so I assure you there is nothing to fear.” replied Rurik calmly. Twilight relaxed a bit at this revelation and stopped shaking.
“Oh, that explains that… ” replied Twilight feeling a bit foolish.
“Here, allow me to take a look at your wound: infections are not very fun.” he replied simply. Twilight approached him and allowed him to look the injury over. He took the end of his cloak and wiped the blood away from her face, before sealing the wound with his magic.
“There, good as new.”
“Thanks.” replied Twilight.
“Not a problem. Now that the awkwardness is over, how about your companion stops cowering in the bushes and introduces herself.” said Rurik turning his gaze towards some bushes close by. Rarity exited the bushes; the marshmallow unicorn mare had a sheepish grin on her face.
“Now, may I kindly ask your name Miss?” asked Rurik politely.
“I am Rarity, Element of Generosity and owner of Carousel Boutique.” replied the mare trying to fix her mane.
“So you are a tailor?” he asked politely
“I am more of a fashionista, I design and then create clothes, so I guess you could call me a tailor as well” she said in her signature accent. Rurik made a mental note to ask later what she meant by element of generosity.
“It is a pleasure to meet you Miss Rarity.”
“So, not to be rude; but what are you and where are you from?” asked Twilight.
“I don’t know about you, but I want to get out of this forest as soon as possible: we can play Q and A later.” A wolf’s howl in the distance only served to reinforce what Rurik was saying.
“Agreed! If we follow this path, we will be back to our home town Ponyville in no time.” replied Twilight.
“Alright then let’s get under way, if it is a full day’s journey, we will be stopping for the night and making camp. I can answer some of your questions then.” replied Rurik. The lone human and his pony companions began down the trail back towards the town.

A few hours later.
The forest seemed to never end; and Rurik suddenly halted, his new companions stopped with him: he felt as if they were being watched. The Nord’s suspicions were answered by a low growl.
“Please tell me that was one of your stomachs growling.” said Rurik.
“I wish I could!” replied Twilight fearfully as a group of five wooden wolves walked into the clearing.
“What in the name of Ysmir are those things!?” he asked readying his Magicka.
“Timber wolves! said a scared Twilight.
“Can they be destroyed!?” asked Rurik.
“Yes, they burn very easily!” replied Twilight. Rurik quickly conjured up flames into his hands, and released two jets of flame, incinerating three of the five wooden attackers. The ones caught in the blast of flames yelped as they were burnt to ash. The other two dodged the flames; and leapt into the air, leaving him with no time to draw his scimitar, he focused his vital essence.
“YOL TOOR SHUL!” at Rurik’s shout, a massive wall of flame roared from his mouth, and incinerated the remaining two wolves. Luckily, the flames from the small skirmish quickly died out and they did not have to worry about being caught in a forest fire. After the initial shock wore off, Twilight raised her hoof as a student would for a teacher.
“Yes Twilight?” asked Rurik.
“What was that!?” she asked.
“The flames were destruction magic, but the way I blew fire out of my mouth; that is a little harder to explain. We should find a spot to make camp before it gets any darker: I will explain then.” said Rurik.

After quite a bit more walking; the party came to a small cave. With no other form of shelter except for some trees, Rurik decided to investigate the cave, and after making sure that nothing lived inside that would try to make a meal out of them in their sleep; he deemed it a good enough place to make camp for the night. Rurik had set about creating a campfire, and used his flames spell to light it. He also placed some runes in the entrance to deter any would be intruders.
“What are those things?” asked Twilight.
“They are flame runes: do not step on them or you will get burnt to a crisp.” warned Rurik.
“Why did you place them?” asked Rarity.
“To keep any hungry critters out.” stated Rurik simply. “Now I believe you two had some questions for me?”
“Yes.” said Twilight.
“Alright, you ask me one question each, and then I will ask you one, sound fair?”
“Sure.” she answered.
“Alright then, ask away.” said Rurik.
“So, what are you and where are you from?” asked Twilight.
“I am a human; a Nord to be more specific. We Nords hail from the Kingdom of Skyrim; on the continent of Tamriel; on a world known as Nirn: that answers that in a nut shell.” answered Rurik. Twilight’s horn flared as she used a spell to record the Nord’s voice so she could write it down later. Rurik was unsurprised by this; after all, he was a sentient being who used magic, why wouldn’t sentient ponies be able to?
“Your armor is quite spectacular darling; is it made of gold, and why ruin it with that dark blue cloak? Why not bright red or even green?” asked Rarity.
“Well, to answer the first part of your question; this armor is not made of gold: it is made from a metal that some scholars have dubbed Dwemerethium. The metal can be very difficult to come by unless one knows where to look, and is also somewhat expensive. It gets its name from the people who invented it; an extinct race of subterranean elves known as the Dwemer. They were one of the most advanced races on all Nirn, creating living machines that still patrol the halls of their cities and weapons that were centuries ahead of even what we have today three thousand some odd years later; and one day, they just disappeared. There are many theories, but no one truly knows what happened to them. As for the cloak, these are the colors of Skyrim’s High King; Ulfric Stormcloak: and I would rather die than be caught wearing anything red on my armor.” said Rurik with a bit of venomously with his face betraying anger.
“Why is that? Red is such a fabulous color when used correctly.” said Rarity. Rurik decided to humor the fashionista.
“Red is the color of the Cyrodiilic Empire: an oppressive empire that Skyrim was once part of. They used to have honor, and were good rulers, but they lost all after they bowed to the Thalmor.” spat Rurik.
“What’s a Thalmor?” asked Twilight. Once again, Rurik ignored the breach of the rules for the Q and A session.
“They are the governing body of another country: The Aldmeri Dominion; a Kingdom of Elves who are known as High Elves, or Altmer. They hate humans, and they will do anything to spite us: if they had it their way they would kill every last human on Nirn. Elves look a lot like humans, but they are taller, thinner, and have pointy ears. The Empire fought a war against them; and lost because the coward emperor had no backbone. The treaty they forced down our throats ripped away our religious beliefs and not only that; but they could use the Empire’s troops to enforce it. They were also given free rein to enter provinces in the Empire with their secret police and arrest people who were suspected of continuing their faith. Many friends of mine were never seen again.” said Rurik with sadness.
“That’s so horrible!” said Twilight.
“Aye, that it was, but the men of Skyrim had had enough. We Nords do not take kindly to being pushed around like that. Our current king, Ulfric, Challenged the puppet king that the Empire had on the throne to single combat. It was the one of the shortest duels in Tamriellic history; the puppet was killed; but the Empire wanted Ulfric’s head. He and some of the Nobles formed an army and we fought back. We won the war and threw those red wearing Imperial scum out of our home: and Ulfric was officially recognized as High King. That Miss Rarity is why I will not be caught dead wearing red with my armor. Formal events are another matter though.” finished Rurik.
“I’m so sorry darling, I assure you I meant no offense.” said Rarity earnestly.
“None taken; The subject just brings up some painful memories” replied Rurik.
“Your world sounds so violent.” said Twilight sadly.
“That it is, I take it by the looks on your faces that you come from a more peaceful society?”
“Yes; in fact the closest thing we had to a war was last year at a royal wedding when a there was an attempted invasion. Things have cleared up, but tensions are still high between our country and the other. We haven’t fought an actual war in more than five hundred years; and crime is very rare.” replied Twilight.
“I see. Speaking of; where in the name of Stendarr am I?” asked Rurik.
“You are in the Everfree Forest, in the Principality of Equestria, on the world of Equiis.” answered Twilight. She then gave him a brief overview of Equestrian history and society; and mentioned some of the other countries around Equestria such as the Griffon Kingdoms and Minotaur Empire. He was amazed and somewhat jealous of how tolerant the ponies were, as even after King Ulfric had put his foot down with the issue of multiple Royal Decrees, some cities and towns in Skyrim were not welcoming to non- Nords. He had fallen into a paradise. He was unsurprised that Equestria had not had a war for well over five hundred years and that crime was very rare; and found himself beginning to really admire this ‘Princess Celestia’ that Twilight told him of. He was also very distressed though: not only was he not in Skyrim anymore, he was not even on Nirn. She suddenly noticed that Rurik had a very sad and somewhat shocked face.
."What's wrong?" asked Twilight with a concerned look.
"I am not even on my own world anymore. How can I get home; will I even be able to go home?" he said shaking his head.
“Well, I am Princess Celestia’s personal student: she is a master of magic, and if anyone can figure out how to get you home, she can.” said Twilight walking over and placing a hoof on his shoulder. Rurik however began to think very deeply. If Twilight and her friend had been kidnapped by sell swords, then the one who had hired them had wanted something from the princess: probably money, as the dog had claimed, but he was not going to jump to conclusions.
"Thank you Twilight." said Rurik looking at her with a ghost of a smile. A few minutes passed in silence before their little q and a session continued.
“So, you also have magic; can you tell me a bit about it?” asked Twilight.
“Why yes, I can. Magic on Nirn is divided into five schools: Alteration, Conjuration, Restoration, Illusion, and Destruction. I majored in Alteration and Restoration; which allows me to better protect myself against attacks both physical and magical as well as heal myself or others: and also in Destruction; which harnesses the power of fire, ice and lightning to smite my foes.” explained the Nord. He was still very shocked, but hid it well.
“What do some of the other schools involve? asked Rarity.
“Well, the other two schools are highly frowned upon in Skyrim, and few people there practice them.”
“Why is that?” asked Twilight.
“The school of Illusion is primarily used by power hungry mages and assassins, as it can allow the user to influence the minds of others, or even turn the caster invisible; while Conjuration dances on the precipice of evil. Conjuration magic is occasionally used by spell swords: lightly armored mages who also are good soldiers; to summon a weapon from thin air: but it is also used by necromancers and corrupt sorcerers to raise the dead; or worse: summon Daedra from the plains of Oblivion itself.”
“What on earth is a Daedra? It sounds dreadful.” said Rarity.
“That is too kind a word to describe them. There are many types of Daedra, but the most dangerous ones are the Daedric Princes. Each one rules a realm of Oblivion, and while a few are good; most of them see mortals as mere playthings to be tossed away at a whim. Conjurers mostly summon lesser Daedra, and even they are very dangerous.” replied Rurik.
“How many of these princes are there?” asked Twilight.
“There are seventeen of them: only four are what I would consider good.” replied Rurik grimly. Twilight decided it was time for a change in the subject.
“So, that thing you did earlier with your voice? How did you do that?” asked the lavender unicorn.
“Well, it was just before the war with the Empire started: I found out that I am what is known as Dragonborn, meaning I was born with the soul and blood of a dragon. Now, the dragons of our world wield their powers through their voice, by using what are known as words of power. They consist of three words and each word makes the shout all the more powerful; and they are spoken in the dragon tongue. The words I used earlier were “Yol” which means fire: “toor” which means inferno: and “shul” which means sun. These words require power to use, and gaining that power can be rather unpleasant.” explained Rurik.
“Why is that?” asked Rarity.
“To gain the knowledge of the shout, one must study the words in depth, to completely understand them: it takes years of study for normal people, while a Dragonborn absorbs the souls of the dragons he slays to gain their knowledge.” Twilight wore a horrified look on her face, thinking of her adopted little brother Spike.
“Why do you have to kill them?" she asked with a worried look on her face.
“It is difficult not to do when most of them would rather kill you than reason with you.” retorted Rurik darkly. Twilight swore she saw the blue eyes of the Nord flash an angry unnatural red for a brief moment before returning to their natural state.
“Do you even try talking with them before you kill them?”She asked stepping back a little.
“Why should I when I see the burnt corpses of innocent men women and children. When I see a child weeping over the charred remains of her mother and father, only to be eaten by the beast moments later. Were they given a chance to reason? To even beg for their lives? No they were not. You were the one who said that my world is violent; and now you know how violent it is” said Rurik shaking his head. He rose from the stone he was sitting on and walked towards the front of the cave.
“I would rather not talk any more on the subject. Get some sleep you two. We have a long day ahead of us. I will take the watch tonight.” he said sadly as he put his helmet back on.
“But Rurik darling, you need rest too!” said Rarity with concern.
“I don’t need sleep, I will be fine.” he said walking to the front of the cave to stand watch. What had started as a decent conversation had ended with bad memories. Rarity and Twilight doused the fire and turned in for the night, unsure of what tomorrow would bring.
Rurik sat at his self appointed post at the mouth of the cave. He had taken out a whet stone and began sharpening Windshear’s blade to try and calm himself. He envied these ponies; living in a fairy tale world of peace and happiness and not having to fear war or the constant threat of bandit attacks. This place was a paradise.

While the big Nord sat his vigil at the mouth of the cave, Twilight found herself fraught with worry.
“He kills dragons! What will he do to Spike if he sees him!?” Twilight thought to herself. She lay on a bed of moss, her mind racing a mile a minute; until she decided the only way to find out how Rurik would react was to go and ask him. Slowly, she got up from the mossy ground, and made her way to where he was standing watch.
Rurik sat with a bottle of Black Briar Mead in one hand and a loaf of bread in the other; the Visage of Mzund sat on the rock beside him staring into the night and Windshear leaned against his knee. Hoof steps from behind him caught his attention, and
“You should be sleeping.” said Rurik dryly.
“Sorry; I just had a question that could not wait until morning.” replied Twilight nervously.
"What is on your mind then Twilight?" he asked motioning for her to sit beside him on the rock.
"Well, you kind of scared me earlier." said Twilight.
“How so?”
“Well, my adopted little brother is a dragon…” she began quietly. Rurik sighed and turned to her with a dead pan stare.
“By the Divines, do you really think that I just walk around and kill them whenever I see them? No; I do not kill them unless they attack me or others first. Some of my closest friends in fact are Dov or Dragons in your tongue. I am not some Akaviri Barbarian.” he replied shaking his head with a small chuckle.
Twilight had no idea what an Akaviri was, but was relieved nonetheless at the news.
"Whew, I was worried there for a second. Thanks for explaining that." she said relaxing a little bit.
“Not a problem: now go and get some shut eye; and we can continue q and a tomorrow when we eat breakfast.” said Rurik.
“But I’m not-” Twilight was cut off by a big yawn. “Ok I see your point. See you tomorrow Rurik.”
“Good night Twilight Sparkle. Get some sleep, because tomorrow will come earlier than you think.” Twilight had no problem going to sleep when she lay down in the moss covered area near Rarity; sleep took her as soon as her head hit the moss.
The engineer meanwhile finished his midnight snack before pulling out one of the few books he had on him: and cast a mage light spell so that he could read. The light that the flames produced showed the title of the dark covered book which had been written by the anonymous author: The title of the book was Immortal Blood.

The next morning came early as was to be expected, as Rurik wanted to get a move on as soon as possible. There was still a good deal of walking to go, and while the ponies seemed to be tired after only two hours of walking, their Nord protector showed no sign of fatigue despite his heavy armor and the fact that he had stayed up the entire night standing guard over the cave entrance. His endurance was very impressive to both of the ponies, but in especial to Twilight; who simply stared in awe as the tall man trudged along tirelessly through the thick forest as they began panting from the heat of the sun over head. The Nord quickly noticed this and spoke up as they entered a shaded clearing.
“I know we need to get back to the town, but we should rest for a bit. You both look very tired.” said Rurik removing the Visage of Mzund and revealing that he had not even broken a sweat.
“How are you not rung with perspiration!?Especially in all that armor!” asked Twilight in awe.
“Well, travelling between cities in my home is a dangerous business in itself, and I sometimes have to go on foot. Heavy armor like this offers the best protection against bandits and other things; sometimes in more ways than one. On rare occasions, bandits will not even attack a man in heavy armor, preferring softer targets like some poor villager. After a while I just got used to wearing it I guess.” answered Rurik with a shrug.
Rurik passed out some empty mead bottles that he had filled with fresh water from a nearby stream that morning to his thirsty travelling companions; who gladly took the cool bottles offered them.
“Rurik darling, how did you keep this water so cold?” asked Rarity.
“Well, remember the ice spikes I used yesterday?”
“Oh yes; of course…” she said with an involuntary shudder at the memory of the massive icicles punching through her captor’s knees.
“I just made tiny versions and dropped them in to keep the water cool. I use it all the time at home in Skyrim.” he explained.
“Wow, you’re very resourceful!” complimented Twilight.
“Why thank you.” replied Rurik with a mock bow that made Twilight and Rarity giggle. The peacefulness of the small break did not last however; Rurik suddenly turned around and looked to some bushes: something was watching them.
“Get behind me and stay quiet girls: now.” he commanded putting the helmet back on and readying a lightning bolt spell in each hand. The two mares did as Rurik told them and stood behind the big Nord. Out from the bushes came about twenty Pegasus ponies that were a little taller than Twilight and Rarity. They were clad in bronze colored armor, all of them white with blue manes, and all of them carrying shields, spears, and stoic faces. Rurik could tell that they were soldiers of some kind as they moved with military precision in setting up a phalanx, all of their spears leveled at him. Despite the show of force; the Nord was less than impressed: King Ulfric’s guards could easily tear these toy soldiers to bits in the blink of an eye.
The shields opened to reveal two unicorns who were obviously officers. One had an ice blue coat with a bright green mane and wore a full suit of steel plate armor with the helmet hiding his face: slung across his back a huge warhammer that could easily crush a man’s skull with one blow. The other officer wore intricately decorated purple plate armor everywhere but his head, and at his side hung a highly decorated but very functional looking blade. He had a white coat with a two toned blue mane, and his face was a mask of rage. The unicorn’s horn glowed and a faint glow surrounded the handle of the sword, which rang loudly as it was drawn from its scabbard and its point leveled towards him. Rurik extinguished his magic so as to show the guard ponies he didn’t want a fight.
“Easy now, I didn’t come here for a fight; I just want to get these two home.” explained Rurik pointing a thumb over his shoulder at the two mares.
“Likely story, I bet you had something to do with their kidnapping, you walk just like one of those damned curs!” hissed the unicorn.
“I beg your pardon, but I am no dog.” replied Rurik removing his helmet and holding it under his arm and giving the officer a stern expression.
“LIES! I am placing you under arrest!” yelled the unicorn. Despite the fact that he was beginning to grow weary of the unicorn's insolence, the Nord forced his anger at the personal insult down.
“Listen here! I have done nothing wrong!” said Rurik with rising anger.
“In the names of Their Royal Majesties; princesses Celestia and Luna: I hereby place you under arrest for involvement in the kidnapping of Miss Rarity: Element of Generosity and Twilight Sparkle: Element of Magic and Personal student of Princess Celestia. You will submit to our authority willingly, we will make you submit by force! Do you submit beast!?” snarled the officer. The answer that the officer got was a blood chilling and mocking laughter from Rurik. Once he had gotten over his laughter at the pathetic attempt to intimidate him, Rurik spoke.
“First off: I am a man: and second-”
“SILENCE MONSTER! I will not fall for your tricks, do you take me for a fool!? Now submit, or you will be punished!” Yelled the officer: now Rurik was beginning to get angry.
“Watch your tongue whelp! I am Rurik Skull-Taker of Clan Skull-Taker: Thane of the Nine Holds of the Kingdom of Skyrim; Battle Mage; and Chief Engineer of His Majesty Ulfric Stormcloak, High King of Skyrim and Jarl of Windhelm. I have committed no crimes and therefore will not submit to your authority!” yelled the Nord.
“Liar! I will give you one last chance to submit!”
“Did you just call me a liar you little milk drinker!?” growled Rurik in a way that made Twilight quiver in fear.
“Damn right I did!” hissed the guard captain.
“I challenge you to a duel: Single combat here and now, the one who yields first will lose.” snarled Rurik. Few things infuriated him more than men who insulted his honor: and this officer had done just that. The last person foolish enough to call him a liar had been Ulfred Battle-Born in Whiterun Hold; and the foolish man had ended up missing most of his teeth in the ensuing brawl.
“I accept!” snarled the guard officer, sensing an easy victory over what he had wrongfully assumed was an overgrown Diamond Dog in fancy armor. Rurik drew Windshear from its scabbard and activated his ebony flesh spell, before switching back over to destructive lightning. Before combat began, the Nord felt a tug on his cloak.
“Please don’t hurt him! He’s my brother Shining Armor; Captain of the Royal Guard!” said Twilight with worry.
“Well: I should have guessed…” replied Rurik I thought I saw a familial resemblance” he said looking at her brother and then back to her.
“I’m sorry for how he is acting but please, don’t hurt him!” begged Twilight: making Rurik sigh in annoyance.
“Twilight, why didn’t you say anything?”
“You told us to be quiet.” she said nervously, causing the Nord to face palm.
“Yes, Yes I did. Do not worry, I will try not to-” *WHAM!* Rurik was knocked off his feet by the angry stallion’s cowardly charge, but rolled to the side before Shining Armor could bring down his sword on Rurik’s helmet. The Nord was back on his feet in no time and blocked an incoming slash from the captain’s blade. The two became locked in a test of strength; but it was clear that Rurik was holding back.
“You think you can stand a chance against me? Well I have news for you-” Shining was cut off by a huge; armor clad; Nord Fist smashing into his nose and breaking it.
“Less blabbing and more fighting Milk Drinker; I don’t have all day.” said Rurik calmly; saluting with his blade. This action only infuriated the Shining Armor even more, and he charged the man: raising a magical shield.

Shining felt his nose break from the force of the punch: It hurt like Tartarus but he had to teach this monster a lesson for challenging the authority of the Royal Guard.
“Less blabbing more fighting Milk Drinker; I don’t have all day.” mocked the monster. The thing even threw a swordsman’s salute, which made Shining Armor all the angrier. The infuriated captain created a magical shield and charged.
‘We’ll see who throws the insults once you have a sword in your ribs.’ Shining thought to himself: unfortunately, he failed to notice that the creature was still holding its ground. Shining pulled the sword back for a thrust aimed at the area that appeared to have less armor.
‘I have you now-‘ Shining felt as if he were suddenly caught by a gale force wind as he was slammed on his side: the hard hit knocked the wind clean out of him. All shining had seen from the corner of his eye was the sword’s pommel striking his shield; how had it knocked him down? He got to his feet quickly despite being a bit winded, but the creature was not finished; it began to shout at him in a language he could not understand.

“ZUN! HAAL VIIK!” shouted Rurik: the look of confusion on Shining Armor’s face turned to fear as his sword was ripped from his telekinetic grasp by a small shock wave that emitted from the Nord’s mouth and landed in some bushes. Before he could take off after it though, Rurik shouted again.
“VEN! GAR NOS!” A small cyclone roared forwards, throwing the now helpless Unicorn straight up in the air; the looks on the faces of the Royal Guards were ones of disbelief as they watched their commander having his flank handed to him. A split second before Shining Armor hit the ground; Rurik acted.
“WULD! NAH KEST!” With a sound akin to the snapping of a whip, the human shot forward , catching Shining by his plate armor’s gorget and slamming him to the ground on his back, Windshear’s blade pressed to his throat.
“Do you yield Captain?” hissed Rurik.
“Never!” Shining spat at the warrior’s face, and Rurik responded by bringing his helmeted head down in several swift motions; knocking the captain unconscious.
The Nord stood up and turned to the Royal Guards; but they had parted revealing a tall, violet eyed alabaster pony with wings like a pegasus, and a horn that made the ones that Twilight and Rarity had look like a dagger compared to a Great sword: on her head sat a golden crown, showing her to be an authority figure of some sort. Her mane was something that Rurik had never seen before: it had multiple colors and seemed to flow on its own. This had to be Princess Celestia, and by the divines did she look angry. The thing that panicked Rurik however was that he felt a bit weak around her. Behind her were four other ponies. Two were Pegasi, one was sky blue with a brightly colored rainbow mane and gave off an aura of arrogance, while the other was butter yellow with a light pink mane and seemed completely terrified. The other two ponies resembled standard horses that one saw day to day in Skyrim; one was pink with a hot pink mane, the other Orange with a blonde mane: she looked well muscled and quite tough, while the pink one he really could not read. What concerned him was the fact that all of them, except for the yellow one looked very hostile towards him.
“Release my student and her friend.” ordered the Alicorn in a voice filled with well controlled anger.
“They have been free to go at any time. I just figured it would be rather unwise to leave them alone in this forest.” said Rurik.
“Forgive me if I do not believe you beast. Now release them.” she ordered.
“Princess no! You don’t understand: He saved Rarity and I from the Diamond Dogs that kidnapped us!” explained Twilight.
“While I do believe you; he also assaulted your brother; for which I cannot see why you are defending him.” replied the
Princess.
“Well, then maybe you should keep your dog on a shorter leash.” growled Rurik.
“Pardon me?” asked Celestia raising an eyebrow.
“Where I come from, if the captain of the royal guard or anyone else for that matter had tried to arrest me without cause and then slandered my name: I would have cut his head from his shoulders before placing it on a pike.” said Rurik dangerously. The princess turned to the pony in the plate armor with a questioning look on her face.
“Is this true Steel Shod? Did the captain attack without provocation?”
“Aye that it is; the captain was being down right disrespectful. He just tried to arrest big fellow over there, who tried to explain what had happened. The captain called him a liar, and the big guy then challenged him to single combat and the captain was greatly outmatched.” replied Steel Shod as two royal guards dragged the incapacitated captain back to their lines.
“I am also utterly appalled to see how you treat outsiders, especially after Twilight here told me about how peaceful and tolerant you ponies supposedly are. I guess tolerance only applies to your own kind.” spat Rurik. He became even more annoyed when he saw shapes moving about in the tree line: probably more guards waiting for the order to attack him. Celestia was hurt to hear his words: she herself had even jumped to a conclusion based upon seeing the well beaten Captain of the Guard, and this was not the hospitality of the Equestria that she had worked so hard to build. Whatever this thing was, he had been attacked without reason; as Twilight and Rarity both were not bound or being forced in any way to follow him.
“I apologize for the treatment you have received-”
“Save it for when you have your other goons in the bushes stand down your highness.” replied Rurik angrily sheathing his sword and removing his helmet as he walked up to the Princess. His face was a mask of anger, but it gave way to concern as he realized that Celestia’s face showed something he had not expected: confusion.
“I have no other guards with me.” she said as Rurik got within a few feet. His mind suddenly made the connection as to why Twilight had been kidnapped. The sound of a crossbow being fired broke the sudden and uneasy silence that had come over the clearing, the quarrel flying directly towards the Sun Princess. Faster than anypony’s eye could follow, Rurik’s hand snapped out and caught the crossbow quarrel inches from Celestia’s shocked face, the enchanted tip glowing white. He wasted no time in roaring a warning to everyone in the vicinity.
“AMBUSH!”
The Royal guards wasted no time in forming a schiltrom around Rurik, the princess, and the other ponies that had accompanied her. The princess used her magic to fire bolts of destructive energy, while some of the royal guardsponies fired back with their own crossbows. Crossbow bolts flew in from all directions, clanging off of the round bronzed shields.
“Hold steady!” barked Steel Shod. Rurik had to admit that what the ponies lacked in experience at arms, they more than made up for in their courage and discipline. The Nord added to the crossbow armed guards efforts by launching fireballs towards the tree lines where the enemy was hiding. He quickly heard a satisfying yelp as one of his targets was hit: he grinned in victory, but felt a light tap on his pauldron, and turned to see Steel Shod. The Unicorn had removed his helmet revealing a golden coat and short black mane. The warrior looked to him with stoic but concerned hazel eyes.
“We are running out of crossbow bolts, and the unicorns and the princess can’t keep firing blind much longer or their magical reserves will dry up and leave them exhausted. We have to finish them off or we will have them harassing us the whole way out of this damned forest. We need a distraction so we can finish these bastards, or we need help!” reported Steel Shod.
“Leave it to me: I will do you one better and off these bastards.” said Rurik turning to the guard officer.
“I don’t know why I believe you but if you want to get yourself killed then go for it! I can’t leave the guards and the princess behind; not with the captain incapacitated; and my ponies won’t stand a chance against this many well armed assassins in a one on one!”
“Just leave it to me.” said Rurik taking the Aetherium Staff in hand and pointing it at the ground in front of the guards. A small portal opened and out popped a Dwemer Spider Guardian automaton, which scuttled into the bushes, electricity dancing around the spinning gyro on the top of it. This was followed by a shriek as electricity coursed through the body of one of the assassins.
“ODAHVIING!” shouted Rurik, his shout blasting into the air sounded like the crack of a whip. Another assassin ran out of the bushes, only to be leapt upon by the Dwemer contraption, and electrocuted before the little machine scuttled back into the bushes. The Ponies held their ground but shook in fear as the bone chilling roar of the dragon echoed around the forest and a massive shadow flew over them before returning and hovering over them and blasting flame into the trees below. a host of screams showed that he had killed quite a few.
“Rurik, what do you require of me?” asked the huge drake.
“Find the one giving orders and grab them: I have some questions that will be needing answers; deal with the rest as you see fit!” yelled Rurik over the din of battle.
“Of course Fahdon; it shall be as you ask.” answered the dragon before flying in a circle. When Odahviing dove and a loud yelp was heard, Rurik knew that the old drake had found his target while the guardsponies looked on in awe at the large red dragon. The small victory did not last as with a shout, nearly sixty assassins in varying suits of heavy and light armor leapt from the tree line and bum rushed the formation. There was a mixture of Diamond Dogs wearing scaled armor, Minotaurs wearing iron and steel armor, griffons wearing bronze, and even some ponies clad in leather. The guards braced and leveled their spears to receive the impending charge.
The assassins smashed into the shield wall and were shoved back; some being skewered on spears. The pony who Rurik had heard called Steel Shod had his war hammer gripped in his telekinesis and brought the weapon around in a crushing arc, shattering the bones of three of the attackers, and crushing the skull of a fourth. Rurik could tell that this pony was an experienced warrior despite his young age as the unicorn seemed to be unaffected by the kills he was earning; boisterously shouting out each kill as a number while other guards showed looks of remorse for having to kill the attackers; this was a pony who knew war quite well and showed no remorse for doing his duty.
Rurik shouldered his way to the front of the shield wall and activated the Visage of Mzund. The assassins who were assaulting that specific area of the shield wall let out blood curdling shrieks as scalding hot steam washed over their bodies; no amount of armor stopped the horrific burns that it caused. The sight of their comrades being steamed to death and the presence of a circling Dovah overhead that had grabbed their leader and was acting as a gigantic, flying, flamethrower proved too much for even the battle hardened Minotaurs. The few remaining attackers fled; but Rurik was not finished. The Nord unhooked two small golden spheres with pins from his belt and pulled out the pins, before hurling the small objects so that they landed in front of the fleeing assassins, before detonating and shredding a goodly number of them. A great cheer went up from the royal guards as the attackers were routed while the small Dwemer machine disappeared back to wherever it had come from.
The celebration however was cut short by the sounds of weeping. Rurik turned to find the Princess, Rarity and the four other ponies standing around Twilight, who lay on the ground with a crossbow quarrel in her side and breathing raggedly.
“Oh divines no!” said Rurik removing his helmet and jogging over. Before he could get any closer, the sky blue one with the rainbow mane flew over and barred his path.
“Don’t you dare go near my friend!” she shouted through tears. Rurik clamed himself with a deep breath to calm himself
“I know you are scared for her, but do you want her to die?” asked Rurik.
“No!” she said.
“If you let me by, I can help her.” he stated calmly.
“How?” she asked.
“Let me past and you will see.” he replied.

Rainbow did not trust the creature, but Twilight was running out of options fast. They had tried using healing magic, but the bolt was enchanted to resist unicorn healing magic, and if she did not get help fast, Twilight would die.
“Alright, but no funny business.” said Dash with a tear filled scowl.
“Don’t worry, no funny business.” said Rurik jogging over and reaching in his satchel. He knelt beside the wounded unicorn and pulled out a phial that held a red liquid, and propping up Twilight’s head, he took the bottle’s cork in his teeth and yanked it off before spitting onto the ground. He then poured about ¾ of the liquid down her throat. The healing potion did its job and Twilight’s breathing stabilized. Carefully setting the unicorn’s head down; he moved to the wound. The bolt had bitten deep, but it had to come out. Twilight screamed and fainted, as in one swift motion; Rurik yanked the bolt out, making the ponies cringe. He quickly poured what was left of the healing potion into the wound, which stopped any further bleeding.
The ponies then watched in awe as Rurik used his Healing Hands spell to heal up the injury. Even the fur on the afflicted area grew back; making it appear as if the wound had never even been there. Twilight groaned as she awoke from her pain induced nap.
“Easy Twilight, you will be a little sore, but you will be fine.” said Rurik rubbing her back.
The big Nord got the shock of his life as Twilight, Rarity, and the other four ponies gave him a hug all at once.
“Ladies, ladies please; I’m a married man.” he chuckled; eliciting a few laughs from the mares around him. The four ponies who he had just met introduced themselves one at a time.
“So, you got a name?” asked the rainbow maned Pegasus.
“Yes, but please do not judge me because of it. My name is Rurik Skull-Taker of clan Skull-Taker from the Kingdom of Skyrim: I am the chief engineer of High King Ulfric Stormcloak, and Thane of the nine holds of Skyrim. Just so you know my family’s name is an old one dating back nearly four thousand years. I do not run around chopping off heads for no reason. ” said Rurik as he removed his helmet.
“It’s a pleasure to meet ya Rurik; Mah name’s Applejack, Element of Honesty.” said the Orange cow pony offering her hoof for a handshake.
“Pleasure to meet you as well.” replied Rurik gladly accepted the kind gesture before meeting the next pony.
“Good to meet you Rurik, I’m Rainbow Dash, Element of Loyalty and fastest flyer in all Equestria! Cool last name by the way.” said the cyan Pegasus arrogantly as she shook his hand. At least she was not the same type of arrogant as the Thalmor justiciers he had dealt with during the war with the Empire.
“Thank you and it is nice to meet you.” said Rurik.
The third one he met he swore was on skooma or something similar: the pink mare spoke a mile a minute and seemed to
defy the laws of reality as she spoke to him; popping up beside him one second only to pop up behind him the next.
“Hi! I’m Pinkie Pie and it’s really great to meet ya! I should throw you a welcome to Ponyville thanks for saving Rarity and Twilight and helping beat the bad guys sorry for being mean party for ya!” she said all in one breath while rapidly shaking his hand.
“Is she always like this?” asked Rurik in a whisper to Twilight.
“Pretty much.” she whispered back. After meeting the pink energy ball, he turned to the last pony, who was cowering behind her mane. Rurik got down to eye level with the timid yellow Pegasus.
“Hello, who might you be?” he asked kindly. He was answered by a barely audible whisper as the little Pegasus hid behind her mane.
“I am sorry little one, but I cannot hear you.” he said kindly. The little pegasus took in a deep breath to calm herself and spoke so Rurik could hear her.
“M-my name is Fluttershy.” she stumbled.
“It is nice to meet you Fluttershy. You don’t need to be scared of me ok?” said Rurik.
“Okay.” she answered quietly. The Nord stood and turned to face the Princess.
“And I take you are Princess Celestia.” said Rurik inclining his head in deference to her rank. While she was royalty, he would bow to no one save the gods or High King Ulfric Stormcloak.
“Yes, and I apologize for your treatment here. I will have a ‘discussion’ with our captain about how he treats others.”
“I can understand that he was worried about his little sister, but he needs to learn restraint. One cannot be a successful soldier when they are run purely on emotion.” said Rurik.
“Thank you so much for saving my life, and more than that thank you for saving Twilight; I owe you a great debt of gratitude.” said the Princess.
“Worry not about it. The gods tell us that we should act with compassion and expect n0othing in return; and I honor their wishes by protecting the innocent.” replied Rurik humbly.
“Those assassins would have killed us if you had not shown up; you have my thanks.” said Steel Shod.
“Not a problem; oh and speaking of assassins, how about we get some answers.” he said looking up at the sky. “Odahviing old friend; if you would be so kind.”
They heard a comical yelp as the assassin was dropped unceremoniously to the ground by Odahving’s claws. followed by the ground shaking as Odahviing found a good landing spot in the clearing. The assassin was definitely a pony, a dark grey unicorn with a white mane to be exact: he also had the bloodied tip of his horn snapped off; probably courtesy of a stray crossbow quarrel. The would-be assassin tried to run but found himself surrounded on three sides by some rather angry looking royal guards. He turned to run the only way that he had thought was open only to come face to face with the huge dragon.
“And where do you think you are going Mal Mey?” boomed Odahviing raising a scaly eyebrow.
The assassin backed up only to run into Rurik’s legs. The huge Nord reached down and grabbed the assassin by his cloak and hauled him off the ground so he was looking in his eyes.
“Alright, you are going to answer my questions one way or another. So I suggest you just answer them when I ask them.”
“Like Tartarus I will!” shouted the unicorn, a mixture of defiance and fear in his violet eyes.
“Listen; there are two ways we can do this: the easy way, or the very easy way. The choice is yours.” said Rurik politely. The unicorn spit in the man’s face, an action only serving to make the Nord get angry. Despite the insulting action; Rurik kept his cool.
“I am giving you one. Last. Chance.” He growled.
“Go die you monster!” hissed the Unicorn.
“Oh silly me; I should have let you know.” said Rurik mockingly with a terrifying smile. The Unicorn’s face went from confusion to sheer terror, while everyone else was frozen in shock as Rurik changed. His golden hair became black; and his pale almost peach colored skin became deathly pale so that it looked almost gray. The most disturbing part though was the eyes: Rurik’s irises went from pools of deep blue to a malevolent, glowing, red.
“I’m already dead.” He finished. The Unicorn’s eyes were big as dinner plates, and he watched helplessly as Rurik grinned and his upper canines extended into two razor sharp fangs.
“You all may want to close your eyes. This will not be pleasant.” said Rurik to the ponies who all now wore terrified expressions.
The Unicorn screamed as Rurik sank his teeth into the his neck and drank deeply.

Needless to say, the ponies did not look away as Rurik began to feed. They watched in sheer horror at the spectacle before them. Fluttershy and Rarity both had fainted while the Princess, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash stood with mouths agape. Twilight was in complete disbelief and stared, and she felt complete terror: where once she had seen a good Samaritan, now she saw a monster. The Royal Guards were too terrified to do anything for fear of making the vampire, or worse yet the dragon; angry. The few seconds it took for Rurik to feed seemed like hours to the horrified Equestrians; but the terror was ended by the sound of a soft thud as the shriveled corpse of the assassin hit the ground. Rurik wiped his mouth clean of any blood and turned around. The ponies backed away from him in fear as he walked towards them and halted about ten yards away.
“M-m-monster!” squeaked Pinkie Pie fearfully.
“Yeah, I get that a lot; so I suppose this is the part where you all try and drive a stake through my heart and burn me?” asked Rurik sarcastically with a deadpan stare. Celestia knew well what vampires were, although in Equestria they were known as vamponies; she had faced the blood sucking horrors on more than one occasion in the past and destroyed them, but as she was also an excellent judge of character. As she looked into those glowing eyes, behind the malevolent appearance, she sensed that this creature was not evil. Nor did she wish to enrage the large Dovah sitting across the clearing from her.
“No Rurik. You have saved my life and those of my little ponies. I ask only that you do not feed on my subjects.” she said humbly.
“That will not be a problem your highness: I only feed when I have no other options, or in this case, I need to get information out of a less than cooperative individual who has threatened lives.” he replied.
The journey to Ponyville took a long time, and by the time that they got back, the sun had set. Rurik had reactivated his camouflage and looked like he had when Twilight and Rarity had first met him in the forest.
“Princess Celestia: we need to speak as soon as possible.” said Rurik quietly.
“What is wrong?” she asked.
“You and your sister are in grave danger Princess. I will tell you more when we can speak in private. Just rest assured in the knowledge that my arrival has caused a major setback in their plans: but if you can contact your sister in some way, tell her to be ever vigilant.” Celestia nodded her head in acknowledgement. Having dealt with vamponies in the past, she knew that they could absorb memories from their prey, and that was exactly what Rurik had done. By Rurik’s tone of voice, she knew that whatever he had discovered was not good. She had also warned Luna to be on her guard with a quick telepathic message as soon as the attack in the woods had been thwarted.
“I have already let her know, and Luna has always been a tad paranoid to begin with. It has served her well in the past.” replied Celestia.
“A little bit of Paranoia isn’t always a bad thing your highness, right now though, you two need to be careful: these assassins are part of a bigger conspiracy.” said Rurik.
“Can you come with me to Capital in the morning and explain more?” she offered as an alternative. Rurik frowned a bit.
“While I do forgive you princess, I am very hesitant about going to the heart of a country in which I am called a monster by the commander of its military. If you return and let the guards know that I will be coming and not to trifle with Odahviing and I then we will arrive in a few days, but in the mean time, we need to talk privately.” replied Rurik.
“I know just the place.” said the princess.
The streets of Ponyville were quiet by the time they arrived in the small town. It was almost eleven o’clock and the ponies were most likely either all asleep or were winding down from the day. They walked through the town on the dirt road until they reached their destination. Rurik took in the dwelling before him. It was a large tree that had been transformed into a dwelling, a library to be precise; a fact given by the sign out front of it that read “Golden Oaks Library.” The royal guards took up defensive positions around the building With Steel Shod standing at the door: thankfully none of the guards had been killed in the fight; nor were there any injuries save a few cuts and bruises. As Princess Celestia and the six mares walked in Rurik taking up the rear of the procession, the Nord caught Steel Shod stealing a glance at the orange mare who had introduced herself as Applejack; the look on his face made it plainly obvious he found the mare quite attractive. Rurik halted before entering the dwelling.
“Keep your thoughts on the present and keeping the princess safe, you will have time to admire her later.” whispered Rurik with a teasing smile; causing the young noble to blush and swiftly close the visor on his helmet.
“Carry on then.” chuckled the Nord closing the door behind him as he walked in.

As soon as the door was closed, Rurik locked it and made sure that the eight of them were alone.
“Princess, it would probably be best if you and I spoke alone; I could understand having Twilight present as she is your student, but the others-” began Rurik in protest, but was silenced by the princess holding up a hoof.
“Rurik, I trust these six ponies with my life. They should be present for this.” said Celestia with a serious look before lowering her hoof.
“Very well your highness; just allow me to make sure that there is no one eaves dropping.” said Rurik looking around the Library.
“Of course Rurik.” replied the princess with a nod.
“Laas, Yah Niir.” he hissed, using the Aura Whisper shout.
“Twilight does your adopted little brother sleep upstairs?” asked Rurik quietly.
“Yes.” answered Twilight.
“Alright, do you know of any spells that will sound proof this room? What I am about to say cannot be heard by anyone else but the seven of you: Talos knows who can be trusted.” whispered Rurik.
“Just allow me a moment to cast the spell and we can speak.” said Celestia. Golden energy flared from her horn and a magical aura surrounded the inside of the Library.
“There, no one but us will hear our conversation: now what is it that you have found out?” asked the Princess.
“Princess, you and your sister are in very serious danger. This was not some plot from a foreign government or some random angry noble; you have some very powerful ponies who want you two dead.” explained Rurik with a very serious stare. The other six mares gasped in shock: to threaten the lives of the princesses was unthinkable to them.
“Who are they and why do they want Luna and me dead?” asked the Princess doing a splendid job at hiding her worry.
“From what I have gathered; they are a group of very powerful and influential nobles; and that their plans revolve around setting up a new social order where they rule Equestria. To do this, they need you and your sister dead because they know that you would never allow something like this.” said Rurik grimly as he reached into his satchel.
“But that’s just silly! Who would raise the sun and moon?” asked Rarity haughtily as she fixed an unorganized bit of hair in her mane.
“A good point: why would they be stupid enough to try and kill you? They would doom the entire world wouldn’t they?” he asked raising an eyebrow. Drinking the assassin’s blood had informed him of how the celestial bodies held an irregular orbit; requiring powerful magic to make them move in a proper orbit.
“Not necessarily. It would take a large number of highly skilled unicorns to do our job, but it can be done without us.” said Celestia with a sigh.
“But Princess, you’re an immortal; how could they even kill you?” asked Twilight with more concern than confusion written on her face.
“While we do not grow old or sick: murder is entirely different. We may still die by the sword, although the weapon that the murderer would have to use would require a special enchantment to end our lives.” replied Celestia.
“Well then; that may explain this.” replied Rurik holding up the crossbow bolt that he had stopped from killing the solar princess, who looked at it closely.
“Indeed: that bolt is enchanted; and such an enchantment was created to take the life of an Alicorn.” confirmed Celestia grimly.
“But; who would have created such an awful enchantment?” asked Twilight with a mixture of fear and disgust.
“I did my faithful student.” said the Sun Princess shamefully.
“But why?” asked Twilight.
“After I lost my sister to darkness a thousand years ago; I feared that should the same happen to me, my little ponies needed something to defend themselves goodness forbid the Elements of Harmony should fail. I created the enchantment and entrusted it to my most loyal subordinates. I would have rather lost my life than become a tyrannical monster.” said Celestia shuddering at the thought of what could have happened.
“So, you created a weapon to keep your subjects safe from what may have happened?” asked Rurik. Celestia nodded her head yes.
“Did you have the plans for these weapons destroyed upon your sister’s return?” inquired Rurik.
“No: they were locked away in a vault in the Canterlot Royal Library under heavy guard after Luna’s return.” replied Celestia.
“Who has access to them?” he asked raising an eyebrow.
“Myself; Luna; Captain Armor and his wife, who is my niece; the Chief Magister, and the Master of the Armory.” replied the princess.
“Well then; I guess that is where we will have to begin: you should keep tabs on anyone excluding yourself who has access to the archives.” replied Rurik taking a thoughtful pose. “I will need dossiers on all of them save Cadence as she was an intended victim. I will also need the dossiers of the most powerful and influential nobles of your country; no matter how trustworthy you think they may be.” Twilight’s face suddenly became angry at the suggestion that her brother could be a traitor.
“My brother would never betray the princesses! He has wanted to be in the guard since he was a colt!” protested the lavender mare.
“I am not calling anyone on the aforementioned list a traitor: not yet at least. I merely wish to rule out any red herrings. Plus, where I come from, I have seen kings overthrown by their own sons in their lust for the throne.” he replied grimly. “I for one hope it is not anyone related to you or her highness.” While still upset, Twilight knew that Rurik was right: everyone had to be ruled out, no matter how harmless they may seem.
“Was there any more information that you ‘extracted’ from him?” asked the sun princess trying to cool the situation down; but also shivering a bit from the memory of Rurik’s little feeding session.
“Not much unfortunately: this group is very secretive about their membership. The inner circle of their little secret society uses spells to make their voices all sound alike, and they wear masks and cloaks to hide their identity. The pony who led the attack was just a pawn to achieve their goals. Apparently, only the inner circle knows each other’s true identities. This little job however was to be his initiation into the inner circle.” explained Rurik. “The other attackers that were with him were sell swords: they were hired to keep the guards busy while he was going to take the shot; too bad for him the tip of his horn got knocked off and he couldn’t focus his magic due to the pain he was in. As for Twilight’s kidnapping, that was to lure your majesty away from the safety of Canterlot’s walls: Miss Rarity was just in the wrong place at the right time.”
“Who was the jerk you had for lunch?” asked Rainbow Dash tilting her head in curiosity and earning rather judgmental looks from her friends. “What?” she asked with a shrug.
“His name was Red Brand. He was from a lower ranking noble family in Canterlot.” answered the vampire.
“I knew who he was. He was always asking and petitioning my sister and me to surrender our power and create a parliament. He was a pest, but I never would have expected him to be involved in something like this!” said Celestia with some shock.
“As I said earlier, a bit of paranoia isn’t always a bad thing. On the bright side, we did put a gaping hole in their plans.” said Rurik with a shrug.
“How so?” asked Applejack.
“The plan was that they were going to kill Princess Celestia; and then, when Princesses Cadence and Luna appeared at the funeral, they would kill them as well, creating a situation where there would be mass panic of the general populace; and the ponies of Equestria would be looking for someone to turn to for leadership in this time of crisis. This group would emerge behind a puppet king or prince who would have no true power; but they would make it seem like he did. From there they would implement their plans for creating a unicorn controlled government that would raise and lower the sun and moon; thus forcing every pony in Equestria to bow to their will. They just weren’t counting on a traveler from another world foiling their plan.” replied Rurik with a small smile.
"But why Cadence? She would never hurt anyone and she is the Avatar of Love!" asked Twilight with shock.
"She is too strong willed to control, and an heir to the throne who shares my visions of how Equestria should be Twilight; that is most likely why." answered Celestia.
"You did warn her as well?" asked Rurik.
"Yes." replied the sun princess.
"Good." Before he could speak; Rurik found himself face to face with Rainbow Dash.
“Wait just a dang minute! How in the hay do you know all of this?” asked Rainbow threateningly while she eyed him with suspicion.
“Remember how I drank Red Brand’s blood earlier?” asked the vampire with an irritated tone and matching expression.
“Yeah, and?” she asked rudely.
“I can absorb a being’s memories through drinking their blood. Think of it as reading someone’s mind but with a very lethal outcome for the someone in question.” replied Rurik before poking a finger into Dash’s forehead and pushing her back a few feet. “And didn’t your parents ever teach you about personal space?”
“So how do we find these meanies!?” said Pinkie Pie putting on a tough face and holding up her hooves like a boxer.
“We either have to wait for them to strike again, or we have to draw them out and into a trap. I would prefer the latter, but the issue is finding ponies we can trust. This corruption extends far and wide. If we can capture one of them and break them; then we will have a place to start.” said Rurik coldly. The six mares shivered at the thought of torture being used.
“I will not allow torture of my subjects: even the ones who want me dead.” said Celestia glaring daggers at the Nord.
“With all due respect your highness: you have few other options. You must break a few eggs to make an omelet. Besides, with torture there is a chance they will survive; if I have to drain them; well you get the idea.” shrugged Rurik.
The silence that filled the room was unnerving as Celestia and Rurik were locked in a silent staring contest with neither of them willing to back down. It was Rurik who finally broke the silence.
“I can stand here like this all night if I have to, but I have much to do and it would be a waste of my time. If you do not want my help, so be it; but mark my words: without breaking one of them; mentally or physically; they will succeed in their goal, and Equestria will not be the place that you worked so hard to make it once they do.” he said without so much as breaking eye contact.
“I will accept your aid, but torture is out of the question. The practice was outlawed nearly fifteen hundred years ago and I will not allow it to return.” she said adamantly.
“Very well then; I will do what I can if and when we do capture them, but do not expect a miracle.” he replied whilst rolling his eyes in annoyance.
“I seriously doubt you will be doing this for free?” asked Celestia raising an eyebrow.
“All I ask is that you help me get home. I have not seen my wife in over two weeks due to my work back home and then winding up here unexpectedly: and I miss her terribly.” said Rurik looking up into Celestia’s eyes. She could see the sadness he felt that had been born of separation from his beloved.
“That I can agree too; I will begin work on it as soon as I am able.” replied the princess.
“Thank you so much.” replied Rurik before he released a tired yawn while stretching his arms. He may have been a vampire, but the stress of the past days had begun to take its toll. Even with his super human abilities: he needed rest. His problem would be finding a place for him and the rather large dragon to sleep.
“I think we should all get some rest; it has been a very trying day and the hour is getting late.” advised Celestia before releasing a yawn of her own.
“Is there an inn anywhere in town?” asked Rurik. “I have gold that I can use to rent a room.”
“There’s no need for that Rurik, you can have the basement: it’s roomy and the bed down there is pretty good sized, plus there is a door if you need to step out for some fresh air.” offered Twilight. She may not have liked that he suspected her brother of treason: but he had saved her life, and she figured she owed him for that.
“I would not want to impose, and besides; the Princess needs a place to sleep as well.” said Rurik.
“No, you’re fine: I have a guest room that I am allowing the princess to stay in.” replied Twilight.
“Are you sure you are comfortable with a blood sucker in your basement?” asked Rurik with a serious tone.
“You saved my life and protected the Princess and my friends, plus you are offering to help ponies that you barely know: it is the least I can do, regardless of the fact that you are a vampire.” she said with a smile.
“Ah dunno Twi, you sure about lettin’ a monster that drinks blood fer food live in yer house?” asked Applejack suspiciously. “No offense.” she said to Rurik sheepishly as she received a rather annoyed glare from the vampire.
“Pruzah Krosis:” growled Rurik in the dragon tongue. “I am not some mindless killing machine!”
“I will be fine Applejack, besides he did just eat…” said Twilight turning a light shade of green at the memory of the vampire’s feeding session. Rurik face palmed before remembering he had to make arrangements for Odahviing.
“Where will Odahviing stay? I seriously doubt that the townsfolk will be all too pleased to wake up to a Dovah sleeping in their streets.”
“Applejack, do you have any empty fields that the dragon can rest in?” asked Celestia. The orange mare did a poor job at hiding her displeasure; but was not about to refuse her princess’s request.
“Well, the north field aint in use, Ah suppose he could sleep there: so long as he don’t snack on any of mah livestock.” said Applejack with some displeasure.
“I will let him know, and you will not have to worry about him making a meal of any of your animals: he is quite polite in that respect; and he probably ate something in the forest anyway.” replied Rurik walking to the door. Celestia turned to address the rest of the mares while Twilight went to get something to drink.
“I will have Steel Shod escort you girls home tonight. He is a seasoned veteran and has the most combat experience of any pony in the Royal Guard. He is loyal to a fault and will protect you with his very life if need be.” she said with a smile. The five mares exited with the princess who gave Steel his orders before going back into the library and going to the guest room to sleep. The palamino unicorn seemed to be more than happy to carry out his orders and escorted the six mares to their homes.

Odahviing flew silently in a large circle around the village; his eyes sharper than those of an eagle were able to see the dwelling that his friend had entered. He could see the ponies and Rurik through the windows clear as day: if they harmed Rurik, he would burn their pathetic town to the ground. When Rurik exited, Odahviing saw the Nord wave him over. The huge drake flew over and hovered in the air.
“What is it Fahdon?” he asked.
“I have secured you lodgings Odahviing; you may not like it but at least it is something.” replied Rurik.
“Why is that?” asked the dragon doing his best to stay quiet as possible.
“It is in a farmer’s field.” Rurik could tell by the deadpan look that the hovering drake gave him that he was less than thrilled.
“Where am I going?” sighed Odahviing.
“Sweet Apple Acres; North field: don’t eat any of the livestock.” replied Rurik sarcastically and pointing him in the correct direction.
“Of course not Fahdon, I will land there and rest for the night.” said Odahviing.
“Pruzah Vulon; Odahviing.” said Rurik.
"Pruzah Vulon, Dovahkiin.” said Odahviing before flying off towards Sweet Apple Acres as Rurik went back into the library. The lights were extinguished in the arboreal dwelling and everyone turned in for the night except the guards, who took turns on watch. The moon was high and it was time to sleep.
A dark eerie trail stretched before Twilight as she walked through the Everfree forest: the trees had strange shapes and cast very creepy shadows in the moonlight. In the distance; she saw her friend Zecora’s dwelling, a large hut in a clearing in the forest. Somewhere in the tree line a twig snapped, making her eyes go wide with fear and making her move quicker and quicker until she reached the hut’s door and knocked frantically as she heard footsteps plodding methodically through the forest: where they were coming from she could not tell.
“Zecora! Zecora its Twilight! Please let me in!” she said frantically. To her horror, there was no answer. Then, the fog rolled in.
The wispy mist was so thick that it could be cut with a knife: and Twilight felt a sudden sense of dread as she saw a dark shape move through the fog at terrifying speed. Her breathing became panicked and she began to feel a cold sweat forming on her brow. She began to feel complete terror when a voice whispered eerily out of the fog.
“Twiiiiiiiliiiiiiiiight…. Twiiiiiiiiliiiiiiiight…”
Her eyes were wide as she saw a tall, robed, two legged figure walk out of the thick fog; red eyes glowing with an insatiable hunger. It stalked towards her; an evil grin spread across its deathly pale face revealing two sharpened canine fangs. The lavender unicorn froze as the vampire reached out towards her; complete terror overtook her and all she could do as the creature sank its fangs into her neck was scream in complete terror as the creature drained her of her blood.

Twilight gasped for air as she sat bolt upright in bed with her eyes wide and soaked in sweat. The lavender mare checked the area around her throat and sighed in relief when she found no blood or bite marks.
“What an awful dream.” she said to herself as she hopped quietly out of her bed. Spike was still sleeping peacefully in his basket; the adorable sight of the sleepy little dragon made Twilight smile.
She decided that her dry mouth and throat warranted a drink of water and quietly made her way to the stairs with her horn casting an illumination spell. As she made her way through the darkness; Twilight felt as if she were being watched. Glancing to her right, she jumped in fear when she noticed two small red orbs piercing through the darkness towards her; and she froze with fear.
“Twilight; you are up awfully late at this hour aren’t you?” asked Rurik from his seat.
His tone was distant, almost depressed. The lavender unicorn hit the lights with her telekinesis and found Rurik out of his armor. He wore a plain black robe; and his camouflage spell was not active; meaning that he appeared as he had when he had fed upon Red Brand in the forest.
“I uh, had some nightmares that were pretty bad.” she replied looking at the ground. Rurik sighed and stood up from his seat before walking over t the young mare and kneeling to her level.
“It was about vampires wasn’t it?” he asked sadly. Twilight nodded her head. “I’m so sorry you and your friends had to see me like that Twilight.”
He spoke to Twilight tenderly as a father would speak to his child. Twilight looked up at his face. The strong, deathly pale face held a look of sadness and shame upon it that made Twilight feel sad just looking at it.
“Are you okay Rurik?”
“No Twilight, I’m really not okay.” he replied in a melancholy tone.
“What’s wrong?” she asked him with concern.
“Well; you know how I absorbed that pony’s memories by feeding off of his blood correct?” Twilight nodded. “I saw so much more than his wrong doings: because of me a young wife is now without a husband; and two little fillies will never see their papa again. Not only that but they will grow up knowing that he betrayed his country: why couldn’t the fool have just given up what he knew? At least then his family would not have the added pain of loss.” he said sadly.
Twilight was surprised but did not show it. She had assumed that Rurik had no qualms about making a meal out of the traitorous noble: in fact Twilight herself had felt bad for Red Brand right up until hearing that he was the intended trigger colt who was supposed to kill the mare who had been a second mother to her. When she thought about it though; he was not feeling remorse for Red Brand; but for the family that the stallion had left behind. Twilight put a comforting hoof on his shoulder.
“Rurik; it wasn’t your fault. What you found out has brought a very dangerous situation to light that would not have been realized until it was too late. It was not because of you that his family will have to experience grief and shame; it is because of him and him alone. Don’t blame yourself for that.” said Twilight in a kind tone.
While he still felt guilt over Red Brand’s family; Rurik knew that the lavender Unicorn was right. He had done what needed to be done, and because he had, there was now a chance to end a threat to an entire kingdom. This did a little to boost the Nord’s spirits, and he sat back down. Despite being a vampiric killing machine; Rurik still kept his humanity, and that was something he thanked the Divines for daily.
“Come one and let’s sit down and talk for a little bit; maybe it will make you feel better.” said Twilight as she went towards the kitchen. “Do you want anything to drink?”
“Oh no thank you, I am not thirsty, but sure: I do not mind talking for a little bit.” said Rurik.

Twilight sat down on her chair next to Rurik and took a drink. Feeling relieved, she set the glass down on the end table, and relaxed in the chair.
“Hey Rurik; you’ve talked about your wife a little bit; what can you tell me about her?” asked Twilight.
Rurik smiled at the mention of his beloved. He missed her so much as he had not seen her in nearly two long weeks. She was visiting her mother, and he had been overseeing the engineering program in Markarth.
“Well; like me she is a vampire; but far older than me. She’s also the one that turned me into a vampire; though that is a story I do not often share.”
“Why not?” asked Twilight.
“When a vampire turns someone it is a very intimate and deeply emotional affair known as the Blood Kiss. It is usually done between the vampire and someone dear to them; and I am not one to kiss and tell.” said Rurik chuckling a little bit at his own joke.
“Okay, I can respect that. Can you tell me how you met her at least?” asked Twilight with some hope in her eyes. She was excited when he answered her that he indeed could tell her.
“That I can: it was about six years ago that I met her. The civil war was over; and I’d just finished saving not only Skyrim but all of Nirn from a great threat. Unfortunately there was little time for rest: villages and cities were experiencing a rash of vampire attacks on a scale that had not been seen for centuries. My brother Harald and I joined up with a group of vampire hunters known as The Dawnguard, men and women who had dedicated themselves to eliminating the vampire threat. My first assignment was to a place called Dimhollow Crypt…”

Dimhollow Crypt; six years ago
“I don’t like the looks of this little brother.” said the tall red haired Nord as he stared unenthusiastically at the entrance of the cave.
“Wow, I never thought that I would hear that from the best monster hunter in all of Tamriel!” chuckled Rurik from beneath his masked golden helm.
“And I never thought that my brother; the genius engineer; would want to go in with only one other person against Talos knows how many vampires.” replied the older Nord.
“Hey, we have an ace up our sleeves.” said Rurik holding up his blade. The sword was pristine and glowed a pure and holy light. “Lady Meridia smiles upon us brother.”
Rurik’s brother put on his dragon scale helmet and drew his bow off his back. The dragon bone weapon was a work of art.
“If my shots are accurate enough; we won’t need to get that close little brother.” he replied with a grin.
“Just watch your step brother, these tombs are plenty dangerous. Now let’s go meet up with Vigilant Tolan; we shouldn’t keep him waiting.” said Rurik walking towards the entrance. Before he could go in he felt his brother’s dragon scale gauntlet on his shoulder.
“I am in light armor Rurik; I’ll move quieter: plus we both know I am better with a bow. Let me go ahead: that way if there is a threat; they won’t hear the arrows that kill them.” grinned the older brother.
“Lead the way then big brother.”

“So wait: you have a brother?” asked Twilight tilting her head with curiosity.
“Mhm. Harald and I look a lot alike but he has red hair and is about a head taller than I am and a good deal stronger; plus our fighting styles are also different. He can swing two handed blades like they weigh nothing at all and can hit a target with his bow at an incredible distance: he’s a true warrior and I couldn’t have asked for a better brother. He makes Ma and Pa very proud.” said Rurik with a look of nostalgia on his pale face.
“Also; you talked about Tolan: Who is he?” asked Twilight.
“He was a priest with an order known as the Vigilants of Stendaar. The vampires burned their headquarters to the ground and he was there investigating. He had come to us for help in avenging his friends who had died there.” said Rurik.
“So; did you meet him there?” asked the lavender mare.
“I was getting to that.” replied Rurik with a sigh. “Now, back to the story: where were we..? Oh yes! Now I remember.”

Being in lighter armor and there for a good deal quieter in his movements; Harald went into the cave first with an arrow knocked to the string of his dragon bone bow; while Rurik followed behind a few feet with a fire bolt spell at the ready in his left hand; and Dawn Breaker glowing hungrily in his right. The holy blade seemed to know when the undead were near. The sword would glow brighter as their foul, corrupted souls drew closer, as if in anticipation of purifying Nirn of their evil, wretched existence. As the two Nords crept into position; they could hear the voices of a man and woman speaking. As the targets came into view; Harald looked in horror at what the two were standing over: the limp form of Vigilant Tolan.
“Hold up little brother.” said Harald drawing back the bowstring. The two hunters listened intently as their oblivious quarry talked.
“Those Vigilants just don’t know when to give up. I thought we’d taught them enough of a lesson when we burnt down their hall.” said a male voice.
“He came here alone…just another fool.” retorted an uppity female voice.
The conversation ended when an arrow made of dragon bone slammed into the side of the man’s head and a fire bolt turned the woman to ash where she stood. The two hunters walked down towards the bodies and halted at the side of the fallen priest: his lifeless eyes staring at the ceiling of the cave. Rurik knelt and closed the dead man’s eyes. Looking away from the body, he saw two more slain vampires: their heads crushed by Tolan’s blessed warhammer. He had died a warrior’s death, and deserved to be honored as such. Rurik positioned the body; putting Tolan’s warhammer’s head on his chest and crossing his hands over the handle just under the head.
“May you find glory in Sovngarde Tolan.” said Harald somberly as Rurik closed the fallen priest’s eyes.
“We will avenge him brother: but we must first find out what is going on here.” said Rurik placing a hand on his big brother’s shoulder.

“He had been drained completely of blood: he was dead I guestimate about an hour before we arrived at Dimhollow.” replied Rurik sadly.
“You two knew him?” asked Twilight.
“I didn’t know him too well; but Harald had fought beside him on many occasions and they were friends. “replied the Nord.
“That’s so sad.” said Twilight. The mere thought of losing any of her friends made her feel uneasy and depressed. Rurik continued with his story however.
“We continued down into the crypt: the place was more of a large subterranean city than a tomb; the Ancient Nords had some rather interesting architecture. We ran into more vampires along the way; dispatching them with relative ease along with any undead servants that they had raised from the dead with foul necromancy. There were also the Drauger to contend with: undead people who guard the ancient barrows of Skyrim. They are aggressive, foul tempered, and they smell atrocious: My brother and I fought through all of these horrors as we made our way to the inner sanctum of Dimhollow Crypt.”

The two brothers found themselves on a very high balcony, and heard more arguing. Once more, the blood suckers were oblivious to the fact that two well equipped killers were stalking them.
“I’ll never tell you anything blood sucker, my oath to Stendarr is stronger than the pain you can put me through.” said one of the voices.
“I believe you Vigilant; so I shall send you to your beloved divine.” came another voice.
Rurik and Harald looked at each other for a fraction of a second before the charged down the stairs to where the voices were coming from. Unfortunately, by the time the two brothers arrived; the priest lay dead at the feet of two vampires; the awkward position of his head revealing the cause of death to be a snapped neck. As one; the two brothers joined their enraged voices into a terrifying battle cry that the Nords are renowned for, and charged the two now very panicked vampires. Despite their obvious fear of the two Nords, the vampires stood their ground: a brave, but foolish and ultimately fruitless effort. One of the wretched creatures exploded in a ball of white flame as Dawnbreaker slammed into his chest, while the other was hacked to bloody chunks with sickening speed by Harald’s claymore.
The two caught their breath before taking in their surroundings; which they had ignored in their haste to save the priest. They were in a large cavern, in the middle of which was a lake. In the center of this lake, connected by some old stone bridges, was an island; on which appeared to be an ancient, ruined, shrine. The odd thing about this shrine was that there was waste high pedestals on which sat bowls. In the dead center was a small pedestal without a bowl.
“Come on Harald; let’s go have a closer look.” said Rurik with a hint of excitement. The older warrior did not share his brother’s curiosity.
“I don’t know Rurik, curiosity killed the cat…” warned the older brother raising a bushy red eyebrow.
“Oh come on, where is your sense of adventure?” replied Rurik tauntingly.
“Fine then; let’s go take a look.” The older Nord said with annoyance. His parents would never let him hear the end of it if he let his little brother get himself killed.
The two Nords made their way across the bridge and got a closer look at the shrine. There were large tracks in the floor that allowed the pedestals to move back and forward: but it was the center pedestal that caught Rurik’s attention. The pedestal had no tracks to allow it to move and there was a button on top of it. Slowly, he approached the button; like a moth drawn towards the light of a lantern: his curiosity taking hold. The young man placed his hand upon the button and pushed down. Nothing seemed to happen at first: but then, the loud thunk sound of armor being penetrated echoed around the cavern as a spike forged of ebony punched through the Dwarven glove on Rurik’s left hand without resistance. Rurik yelped in surprise and pain; and after a few seconds the spike retracted. The young engineer stumbled back and would have fallen on the flat of his back had Harald not run forward and caught him.
“Damn it Rurik! I told you curiosity-”
“Killed the cat: I know Harald!” spat Rurik painfully through clenched teeth.
“Are you alright little brother?” asked Harald.
“Well, I can still move my fingers and hand; so no broken bones. My gauntlet is ruined though.” answered Rurik as he activated a healing spell.
“You just had a spike made from ebony punch through your hand and you’re worried about your armor?” asked the elder brother with a deadpan stare.
“Hey; this armor isn’t easy to forge and it sure as Oblivion isn’t easy or cheap to fix.” replied Rurik.
“And mama said college would be a good thing for you.” replied Harald face palming.
Before Rurik could answer, the ground shook. The tracks emitted a glowing, purple colored flame: Rurik put the hand that the spike had gone through over the flames and to his surprise; they gave off no heat and left no burns on the exposed area of his hand.
“Now that’s interesting.” said the young engineer.
Looking around at the bowls on their pedestals; Rurik saw that one of them had the flames coming out of it as if it were a large torch. He got up off his knees and walked over to it. He then pushed the object back in the track and the flames went out: moving it back; the flames returned. Rurik moved to the next one and pushed it all the way back; causing it to light up just like the previous one.
“Brother, help me out will you? Start moving the pedestals until they look like those two!” he said pointing to the two he had already activated.
Harald nodded his head and the two brothers went to work moving the pedestals. Once the last pedestal was in place the ground shook once more: and from the center of the shrine where the button was; a large six sided, carved stone emerged from the floor. Rurik approached the stone: it was a bit taller than he was and the stone was cracked from age. He raised his gauntlet and knocked on the surface: it was hollow.
“If it’s hollow, maybe something is inside.” offered Harald.
“Possibly; looks like there’s a door here.” said Rurik.
The area that the younger brother had indicated was three cracks that appeared to be manmade. Rurik had seen doors like this in some of the explorations he’d had in ancient Nord barrows; and knew how these doors worked. Putting his hands against the flat surface of the stone, he gave a good push. At first nothing happened: but then the sounds of clicking gears echoed through the cavern and the door slipped down into the floor. The two had expected to find some major artifact or weapon that the vampires planned on using; what they had not expected to find another person locked away inside of the stone compartment.
The person in question was a young woman: slender with beautiful curves and a gorgeous pale face that looked as if it had been sculpted by a master artist. She had soft dark hair that was styled in two braids that ran along each side of her head; and wore elegant looking red and black leather armor and a black cape with an attached hood. Her gloved hands were crossed over her chest as if she were in a coffin. Rurik moved forward as the woman fell out of her stone prison; and caught her before her face made contact with the shrine’s ruined floor. Getting down on a knee; Rurik held the woman so he could see her face: her eyes were closed, and her breathing was shallow.
“Wh- where am I?” asked the woman in a disoriented and groggy whisper.
“Dimhollow Crypt ma’am; are you alright?” asked Rurik.
“Been better.” she wheezed opening her eyes slowly.
The eyes glowed an unnatural red: this woman was a vampire; the very thing he had been sent to destroy. She was also very weak at the moment; something that would make destroying her easy, but for some reason; he found that he did not want to harm her. As she looked up at him with those glowing red eyes; he did not see the hatred, arrogance or anger as he had in the eyes of the vampires he had slain: he saw sadness, loss, confusion; and even fear.
“Who; are you?” asked the woman.
“I am Rurik Skull-Taker, of Clan Skull-Taker: what is your name miss?”
“I’m Serana: you have my thanks for getting me out of that box; and for your blood.” she replied weakly.
“Wait; is she a-?”
“Yes, I’m a vampire.” said Serana with a cross look. “Got a problem with that?” she finished with a sarcastic tone.
“Well considering I am here to kill vampires, yes!” Harald spat back reaching for his claymore.
“ENOUGH!” shouted Rurik; using the power of his Thu’um to amplify his voice. He then cleared his throat and turned his gaze to his brother.
“Big brother; calm yourself. She has not attacked us and tried to drain us of blood; and she may have information we need. So cool it and just relax: remember not all vampires are bad. Just look at Sybille in Solitude.” he offered.
“Alright; but if she attacks you; don’t think I will hesitate to cut her down.” said Harald with a glare.
“Calm down big guy; your brother already fed me.” said Serana with a glare.
“What do you mean?!” asked Harald suspiciously.
“When he got stabbed through the hand, his blood ran down a little gutter in front of my mouth and woke me up from my hibernation: I must say, it was nice to taste virgin blood for the first time in gods know how long.” explained Serana. At this, Harald’s mouth dropped open.
“W-w-what do you mean virgin blood?!” asked Harald with a look of shock and confusion.
“Did your mother and father not tell you about the birds and the bees?” she asked sarcastically. “Or were you just too dumb to understand the concept of virginity?”
“No; I just don’t think that he can grasp the concept of waiting for the right person to come into one’s life instead of wenching his way across the greater Skyrim area.” offered Rurik.
“Rurik: you mean to tell me that you; the divines’ blessed dragonborn; the man that has women throwing themselves at you: has never bedded a woman!? You’re not even thirty yet! I thought you’d have a string of women after you!” shouted Harald.
“Oh I do have a following, but none of them love me for who I am. All they care about is gaining status.” answered the younger brother. This caused Harald’s face to go completely blank and the older brother began mumbling incoherently.
“I think you broke him.” said Serana.
“Eh, he’s fine: he just doesn’t do well with concepts he doesn’t understand: monogamy included.”
“Not to change the subject, but I want to get out of this place. We can play q and a later when we are outside, agreed?” asked Serana.
“Agreed.” said both brothers simultaneously: and with that, the trio made their way to the nearest exit.

“Serana and I went on so many adventures together after that. We started as friends, and as we travelled together we became more. One and a half years after we met; we tied the knot on the front steps of the Palace of Kings in the royal capital. It was the happiest day in my life.” said Rurik. He would have told her more about the marriage and their adventures together but he did not want to be up all night.
“You sound so happy when you talk about her: I will probably never find a nice colt to take home to mom and dad.’’ said Twilight with a hint of melancholy as her ears slightly drooped.
“Oh, and what makes you say that?” asked Rurik raising an eyebrow.
“Well; I am kind of: in the words of one of my friends; an egghead. I spend most of my time reading and studying, plus most of the stallions I have meant were total jerks with only one thing on their mind, and I am really not into mares.” sighed Twilight.
The lavender unicorn felt her mane suddenly ruffled by Rurik’s ice cold hand, causing her to look over to her vampiric guest.
“It may take a while; but the right stallion will come along. He will be someone who wants to spend time reading with you and who treats you right. I was twenty six when I meant Serana; and while I normally do not believe in love at first sight, but I think I felt it there in that tomb when I first met her. You will know when the right one comes along.” he said with a smile.
“So: do you and Serana have any children?” asked Twilight innocently. She became suddenly worried when Rurik’s expression became dark and he turned away from her.
“That is something which I do not wish to discuss.” he answered coldly.
“I-I’m sorry Rurik; I didn’t mean to upset you!” she pleaded.
“I am not angry at you Twilight: but I think now would be a good time for us both to head to bed. We can speak a bit more in the morning.” he answered in a cold and emotionless tone that seemed to make the temperature in the room drop.
“Okay, good night Rurik.” said Twilight.
“Good night Twilight.” he replied rising from his seat and heading to the basement door. Twilight went back to bed, failing to notice the drops of blood on the floor leading to the door that her guest had just walked through. As soon as he sat on the edge of his bed, the vampire wiped away the bloody tears in his eyes and pushed away his sad memories before lying down on the large bed provided for him and letting the sweet embrace of sleep take him.
The interior of the large bar echoed with the conversation of its patrons: loud, drunken and boisterous talk echoed about as ponies socialized. It was one of the lower end bars in Canterlot, making it the perfect hiding place for those who didn’t want to be found: and a perfect place to plot against the crown. While the bar itself was busy; deep beneath the bar was busy as well. Close to ten feet below the grubby bar was a secret amphitheatre large enough to seat hundreds of ponies: and it was currently filled to the max with an army of cloaked and masked figures.
“So; the plan has failed?” came the deep voice of a dark furred unicorn sitting in a throne in front of the gathered conspirators. He was blocked from view by the dark and unnatural shadows that seemed to loom over and
surround him. A trembling noble stood from his seat and approached the throne.
“Y-yes milord; it was an utter failure.” he stammered.
“And Count Red Brand?” asked the mysterious unicorn with the sound of disappointment in his voice.
“Captured and feared dead milord.”
“That is most unfortunate. What of the surviving sell swords?”he asked the quivering noble pony.
“They have been silenced as you ordered milord.”
“Very good: we do not need loose ends that could lead to our discovery. Unfortunately we are back to square one. With Celestia still alive; our plans cannot move forward my fellow nobles. We will continue to stay in the shadows until such a time as we can strike out against Celestia and the other foolish Alicorns: The nobility will rule as the Great Creator intended: without the aid of these damned princesses! Celestia will fall; as will Luna and Cadenza: and a new era shall dawn. The old ways shall be restored, but with the Unicorns ruling the others as they were meant to! The Pegasi shall form our mighty army, and with the Earth Ponies as our workers, Equestria shall be strong! The rule of Celestia: The Tyranny of the Sun shall be but a footnote in the history of Equestria, and our land shall be strong, powerful, and beautiful as it was meant to be!” The other nobles applauded their leader’s impromptu speech, hooves stomping on the ground.
“That’s not all milord.” continued the committee member.
“Oh? And what else do you wish to add?” The dark unicorn asked with annoyance.
“They had help from an unknown creature milord.” said the noble shivering in fear.
“Truly? What did this “creature” look like?” the leader asked rising from his throne.
“The few who described it said it was tall and bipedal; and that it wore golden armor with a dark blue cloak. It apparently has hands like a minotaur as well.” reported the noble.
“Hmm; this development may cause us some trouble. Find out more on this creature: for some reason he seems… familiar.”
“It shall be done milord.”

Twilight lay in her bed: sleep had finally taken her, yet her dreams were still troubled by how Rurik had reacted to her inquiry. The dreams were more like a constant replay of that exact part of the conversation; like a bad memory that refused to leave, and it made her feel awful for even bringing up the subject. She was shaken from her thoughts by a deep booming voice that seemed to resonate with power.
“You shouldn’t beat yourself up over it: how were you to know the tragedy he suffered?” it said.
Twilight felt a chill go down her spine: the only other being she knew of that could enter a dream was Princess Luna; and the voice she had heard definitely did not belong to Princess of the Night. It sounded masculine, deep, and radiated with the same power that she had sensed when Rurik used his shouts.
“Wh-who are you?” she asked more out of fear than curiosity.
“I am someone who knows Rurik.” boomed the voice
“Are you a friend of his?” she asked nervously.
“Hmmm, I would not call the one who cut me down and absorbed my soul a friend: though he was certainly an honorable foe.” Twilight was becoming more annoyed than she was afraid. She wanted to see who this was.
“Can I get a face to go with the voice?” she asked with a bit of venom in her tone.
“How rude of me; of course Miss.” he replied.
A thick mist rolled in and the dreamscape was covered with fog. The billowing mist also began to take form; the form of another human. Once the form of the man solidified, Twilight looked him over. He was a bit taller than Rurik, and wore dark blue robes with golden threads that formed a sort of zigzag pattern on the robe’s borders and his hands and feet were covered by scale like gauntlets. Hiding his face was a golden mask that had slits for eyes, and carved tentacles where the mouth would be: he stood silently for a moment before speaking.
“Allow me to introduce myself: my name is Miraak.”

Kingdom of Skyrim; Haafingar Province
The twin moons were glowing brightly in the sky as a ship plowed through the waters of northern Skyrim. On board the ship, High King Ulfric watched with a rising sense of dread as his ship neared the huge castle’s port. On the list of all the things that the high king had wanted to avoid; telling Lady Serana about her husband’s disappearance or death had been at the top of that list. Ulfric had known full well what Serana and Rurik were, that they were not normal people and that they were in fact vampires. He overlooked this fact however; as both were heroes and more than that they were his friends. They had been there in times of hardship to help Ulfric, weather it was a war or just some decree that the nobles disliked; Rurik and Serana had always been ready to give their support unless they deemed something morally wrong, then he was on his own. As soon as the ship docked and the plank connected both the wharf and the ship, a trio of warriors clad in full ebony armor strode onto the deck. The leader was a tall woman who removed her helmet; revealing dirty blonde hair and a strong, pale face. The lack of glowing eyes was probably due to the camouflage spell that Rurik had designed.
“And what business does Skyrim’s royal guard have in Castle Volkihar, hm?” she asked suspiciously.
“That would be escorting me Captain Hestla.” said Ulfric.
“Ah, King Ulfric, welcome to Castle Volkihar. It has been a while since you have graced us with your presence.” she said as she inclined her head in deference to the High King.
“I just wish I were for a nice relaxing visit: not to bring ill news. Is Lady Serana in? I must speak with her.” replied the king.
“Of course, follow me your majesty.” answered Hestla.
The vampires of the Volkihar Clan had always fancied themselves royalty amongst the vampires, and with the current regime ruling over the clan; they also fancied themselves warriors. Ulfric knew that each of the ebony clad vampire guards were more than a match even for his elite guards: he knew this because on top of the fact that they were vampires; they had also been trained by Rurik. Each one was a very dangerous battle mage clad in full suits of ebony armor; one of the strongest suits of armor in all of Tamriel. In short, the small security force was a private army of armor plated, vampiric killing machines.
The old castle was a sprawling labyrinth of passageways, but the new renovations to the ancient fortress had turned it from an eerie and haunted looking old castle into a mighty and elegant castle that Ulfric was happy to have guarding the Northern coast. Hestla led the High king through several hallways until they finally came to a large door.
“Wait right here your highness; I will tell Lady Valerica that you are coming.” said Hestla. Ulfric knew that this was so the vampires could use their camouflage spells as not to alarm Ulfric’s guards.
A minute later, the large doors were opened to a huge banquet hall. Said location was packed with vampire courtiers who were enjoying goblets of what Ulfric could only guess was blood. It mad Ulfric cringe slightly, but the treaty that he had signed with the Volkihar vampires made sure that it was only the blood of Skyrim’s criminals that was filling those cups. From what Rurik had told him: very few of the original vampires from Serana’s father’s court still remained after the Dawnguard assault on Castle Volkihar; Hestla being one of them. Many of these nobles were newly promoted by Valerica to help her keep the other vampire clans in Skyrim in check.
Sitting at the head of the tables was a dark haired woman who didn’t look a day over thirty; a gold and ruby crown upon her head, and she wore a suit of red and black vampire dress armor that was worn only by the higher ranking members of the vampire nobility. Despite being thousands of years old, Lady Valerica was stunningly beautiful: her pale skin was as smooth as porcelain, and her deceptively delicate face appeared as if it had been carved by a sculptor. Beside her sat the young woman he was looking for, and she had inherited many of her mother’s features: The flowing dark hair, the hourglass figure, the flawless face and skin, and luckily a similar disposition. Ulfric had never met Serena’s father; Lord Harkon, and for that he was thankful. According to Serana, Rurik, and even Valerica herself, he had been an egomaniacal psychopath whom both Serana and Rurik had been forced to destroy.
Despite the beauty of Valerica and her daughter, he knew that their delicate appearance was deceptive in the extreme. During the war with the Dominion, he had seen Serana in combat, and she was anything but delicate. The dainty lass had thrown Elven warriors twice her size and clad in full suits of plate armor into crowds of their comrades as if they were nothing more than children’s’ toys.
“Ah, High King Ulfric, welcome; to what do we owe this unexpected visit?” asked Valerica standing and inclining her head in deference of their guest’s rank.
“It is about Rurik; please, may I speak with your daughter privately?” asked the king.
“Of course Ulfric.” said Serana. She and the king walked into the nearest room, two of the royal guard standing on either side of the door. Once the door closed, Ulfric turned to her and his serious face changed to one of sadness.
“Ulfric, what’s wrong?” she asked with concern.
“Lady Serana; two days ago I summoned Rurik to the palace and asked him and the court mage’s under study to look into some unusual weather patterns. Only the mage’s student returned. He reported that Rurik and Odahviing were struck by a bolt of lightning; but no remains were found. I’m so sorry Serana.” The king thought that Serana would either break down in bloody tears or fly into a rage, but her response was none of the above: it was a look of confusion.
“I mean no disrespect Ulfric, but you are wrong. My husband is still very much alive.” said Serana raising an eyebrow.
“But, he was hit directly by lightning: no one could survive that, not even a vampire from how the assistant described it,” said Ulfric. “And besides how could you just know he is alive?”
“How much do you know about vampires?” asked Serana tilting her head to the side.
“Aside from that they are stronger than normal men and mer, drink blood, and use magic; not alot.” admitted the king while shrugging his shoulders.
“Well; when a vampire turns a mortal, we share a connection. The strength of that connection varies with the relationship that we share with that person; for instance Rurik and I are husband and wife. Our connection is very strong: so strong in fact, that if he were to die I would feel physical pain. This connection that we have would hold even if he were in a realm of Oblivion or theoretically on another world. Therefore, my husband is very much alive your majesty.” explained Serana.
“I see, so how do we find him if there is no trace of him anywhere in Skyrim? It is possible that he is somewhere else on Tamriel.” said Ulfric.
“Well, tomorrow I will set out for the College of Winterhold. I’m sure that the Archmage will be able to do a locator spell. All he will need is something from the person we are trying to locate, like a piece of clothing or even a bit of jewelry.” said Serana turning to the chest at the foot of her bed and opening it and digging through its contents before pulling out a small gold ring.
“Well, when you do find something, please let me know. I would tag along, but the damned nobles can’t live a day without complaining about some new reform I have instated: you should have heard them complain when I allowed Argonians and Khajiit to buy property in Windhelm. I had a headache the entire next day.” said Ulfric massaging his temples.
“Yeah, Rurik has told me about them. My heart may not beat but it does bleed for you, at least here if the nobles get out of line my mother won’t hesitate to make an example of one of them.” Serana said sympathetically as she stood, walked over to him and patted his shoulder kindly.
“Heh, if only my life were so easy!” chuckled Ulfric.
The king took his leave and headed back to Windhelm on his ship while Serana began to pack her clothing and a few weapons. Tomorrow she set out for the College of Winterhold, where she would hopefully find some answers. Normally getting the Archmage to perform such a spell cost a goodly amount of gold, but he owed both her and Rurik quite a few favors for his position in the college and a few other things. Despite knowing that her husband was alive, she could not help but worry about him. Since even before they were married, Serana had accompanied Rurik on every adventure and expedition that he had undertaken since they had met six years ago and she hated the fact that she didn’t have his back. She hoped most of all though, that she could just get her husband back home safe and sound.
The man that stood before Twilight made her feel very uneasy. This was due in no small part to the fact that he had just admitted that he had been one of Rurik’s enemies.
“And just what did you mean by Rurik absorbing your soul?” asked Twilight suspiciously.
“Well, like him I was dragonborn but unlike him however; I was foolish. I lusted after more and more power rather than focusing on my destiny to save Tamriel. I made dark pacts, and I paid for it in the end. Rurik weakened me in single combat; and the entity that I had made pacts with killed my physical body. Rurik absorbed my soul, the soul of a dragon: and here I am today. I am trapped within Rurik, and I see what he sees, unless I choose not to watch what he is doing. He does not even know I am there.” explained Miraak.
“Why don’t you show your face?”
“Because every time Rurik saw me; I wore this mask. This is how he remembers me, and so this is how I appear before you in your dream or to anyone else who I choose to reveal myself to.” replied Miraak.
“Speaking of which, how are you in my dream right now?” Twilight inquired tilting her head in curiosity, at which Miraak chuckled arrogantly.
“I may be dead in the physical realm, but my soul lives on in its full power, which is nothing compared to that of Rurik’s. Think of your new friend as a living, breathing prison for dragon souls. When he learns a new shout and taps into the souls he has absorbed, one of the souls is… executed to give him that knowledge. I have avoided such a fate: why? I do not know. Soon after I was absorbed, I found that I could leave Rurik’s body when he slept, but I could not travel too terribly far, nor could I interact with people or objects. If I ventured too far, an invisible force prevented my escape: I was also able to see into the minds of others, but only when they sleep.” he explained.
“So what has stopped you from convincing someone to kill Rurik and free you.” she asked; her voice still full of suspicion.
“If he dies: then I and every other soul he contains are destroyed with him. I like living. Hence, I keep him alive; in battle I may whisper a suggestion into his mind about an enemy attacking from behind that he cannot see, or suggest to him that he adjust the trajectory on one of his catapults to score a hit that will bring a battle to a faster end. He does not always heed these whispers, ha! He doesn’t even know it’s me. I do this because it benefits me. If he dies, I die, and I prefer being able to live and maybe even have a chance to return to the mortal plane one day. Maybe even redeem myself if I am able.” he replied wistfully.
“What did you mean when you said Rurik suffered a tragedy?” asked Twilight.
“That is not for me to answer. If you really want to know, go and ask Rurik when he wakes up. Just be sure to leave me out of the conversation.” answered Miraak, “Next question, as I can tell you have more.”
“So, why did you reveal yourself to me?”
“Because I am curious: never before have I seen an intelligent unicorn. The ones on Nirn were not sentient as you are and asked fewer annoying questions as a result of not being able to speak. Nor could they use magic, and they were much taller.” answered Miraak in a teasing, arrogant, tone and holding his hand above his head, Twilight snorted in annoyance at the man’s belittling tone.
“Do you always talk down to others as if they are lower forms of life?” she asked with some ire in her voice.
“I do so until said individual proves themselves worthy of being addressed otherwise. You should be honored that I am even speaking with you at all.” he said cynically.
“I will have you know that I am Princess Celestia’s star pupil and one of the most powerful unicorns in all of Equestria!” Twilight growled at the now irritating man. Miraak just chuckled at how easily he had gotten under her skin.
“Please: when I existed in the mortal plane I could suck a dragon’s soul from its body with my voice. Only Rurik has surpassed my power and mastery of the voice; so what makes you think that you are deserving of my respect just because you are the understudy of a powerful magic user? MUL! QAH DIIV!” at Miraak’s shout, a bright, glowing aura surrounded the robed man. The aura took upon the form of a dragon; making him look very intimidating, “You may be powerful, but you are nothing compared to me. As for whom your teacher is: that means absolutely nothing to me: until you earn my respect, I will speak to you however I please.”
Twilight’s blood was boiling, what right did he have to treat her like this?
“Well, at least I get to wake up in a physical body.” growled Twilight. The former Dragon Priest stood silent for a moment as if pondering her response.
“Touché.” Miraak responded sounding genuinely impressed with the comeback before he suddenly began fading into mist.
“What’s going on? Where are you going?!” asked Twilight.
“Rurik is waking up, and I suggest you do the same: we will speak again, Twilight Sparkle. Oh, and you will not remember our little chat when you awake. I cannot have you telling Rurik I am still alive and well; no telling how he may react.” replied Miraak as he finally disappeared with a snap of his fingers.
Twilight felt suddenly felt exhausted and collapsed to the ground, allowing sleep to remove her from her dream world.

Twilight woke up slowly, the morning light of Celestia’s sun assaulting her blurry vision. She rubbed her eyes with her hooves before turning her head to look at the clock. Much to her annoyance, it was ten in the morning. She had overslept by three hours. She groaned before hauling herself out of bed and making her way into the bathroom, taking a good twenty minutes to get ready for the day, taking a shower and then brushing her teeth and combing her mane. Spike was still sleeping in his basket, and Twilight decided to let the little drake sleep to his heart’s content. She figured that he probably had not slept well over the past few days due to worrying about his adoptive big sister. As she made her way down to the kitchen, she could hear two voices talking in the living room.
One was definitely Rurik, the Nord battle mage’s accent was unmistakeable; the other was somepony she did could not tell. As she listened closer she realized that the voice was that of Duke Steel Shod, the officer that had led the royal guard when the princess had been attacked. When Twilight came to where the two were sitting, she saw that the stallion was out of his steel plate armor, revealing his cutie mark, which was a shield over which were two crossed warhammers. Rurik was wearing a fine looking ensemble, complete with finely tailored gloves and fine black boots that came up to his knees, while a hooded mask covered his head and face. The mask itself was made of gold, and two small tusks protruded from the cheeks, giving him a rather menacing appearance. At his side hung Windshear, the lethal curved blade sent a sinister chill up Twilight’s spine just looking at it. Neither of the two noticed her as they were enjoying some coffee from Sugar Cube Corner.
“So, how did last night go commander?” asked Rurik.
“Very well, I got all of the young ladies home without a hitch.” replied Steel Shod.
“No, I meant with Miss Applejack. You seemed pretty interested in her.” replied the Nord with a slight chuckle.
“Oh… well she was the last stop, and we talked a lot on the way.” he said before pausing to take a sip of his coffee.
“So, in your conversation did you happen ask her out?” asked Rurik.
“Yeah, we’re going for lunch in a few hours; if the date goes well I will see if she wants to get together again tomorrow too. Princess Celestia gave me today and tomorrow off before she headed back to Canterlot this morning: said it was because of the overtime I have been putting in back at the capital.” replied Steel.
“Aren’t you worried about not being around if the guards she left here need you?” inquired Rurik raising an eyebrow.
“Not at all: the only one with combat experience nearly on par with myself is Lieutenant Blood Mane, my second in command. He showed up this morning at Princess Celestia’s orders.” replied the stallion.
“I see.” Rurik then turned his attention to Twilight. “Twilight how are you this fine morning?” he asked pleasantly.
“Good Morning to you too Rurik, I am well, how are you?” she said returning his greeting.
“I am alright, but I think you and I should speak a little.”
“About last night?” asked Twilight warily. Rurik simply nodded his head, and Steel Shod took this as his cue to go.
“Okay, I better get going. I don’t want to be late for a lunch date with the Element of Honesty.” proclaimed Steel.
“Good luck and thank you for the coffee!” said Rurik in a cheery tone.
“Not a problem Rurik, have a good one!” replied the young noble as he walked to the door. As soon as Steel Shod was out the door, Rurik motioned to the seat where the commander had been sitting.
“I would like to apologize to you for how I reacted. I made myself a hypocrite, as after I sat there yesterday in front of the princess and lectured her on how a soldier should control his emotions and yet I went and acted like that.” said Rurik with some shame in his tone.
“I forgive you, it’s no big deal really.” replied Twilight.
“Well still, I did act like a bit of a jerk.” he said with a shrug.
“It’s okay really Rurik, I accept your apology." she confirmed with a small grin.
"Thank you." he said with a half smile.
So, I doubt you want to sit around all day doing nothing, did you want to do anything?” inquired Twilight.
Before Rurik could answer, their attention was drawn to the stairs by a small yawn: there on the bottom step was what looked like a small purple Argonian with green spikes on his back.
“TWILIGHT!” he shouted before booking over to her as fast as his little legs could carry him and throwing his little arms around her and taking absolutely no notice of Rurik.
“It’s okay Spike, I’m home.” said Twilight in a soothing and motherly tone while wrapping her hooves around the little drake, Spike crying tears of joy that his adoptive sister was back home safe and sound.
After he had calmed down a little bit, Twilight introduced Spike to Rurik.
“Rurik, this is Spike, my number one assistant. Spike, this is Sir Rurik Skull-Taker, he’s from an entirely different world and he is staying with us for a little bit.” explained Twilight.
“Oh Uh, hi.” Spike said timidly. The little drake looked nervous, so Rurik removed his mask.
“Good to meet you Spike.” said Rurik holding out his hand, which Spike hesitantly took in his own, accepting the man’s handshake.
“So, uh what exactly are you?” Spike asked curiously.
“I am a human. A Nord to be racially specific and you must be the young Dovah that Twilight told me about.” said Rurik in a friendly tone.
“Dovah?” asked Spike.
“In the tongue of the dragons of my world, it means dragon, referring to a single dragon, while Dov, means dragon kind or multiple dragons.” explained Rurik.
Twilight was scribbling down every word that Rurik said but her empty stomach quickly got the best of her, and she and Spike prepared breakfast: a large stack of chocolate chip pancakes. The smell of the tasty food made Rurik’s mouth water like crazy. After breakfast was finished, Rurik decided that he should go to Sweet Apple Acres and check up on Odahviing and make sure the large drake wasn’t too mad that he’d had to sleep in a farmer’s field.

As Rurik and Twilight walked through the town, Rurik noticed that the streets were unusually empty.
“Huh, for a good sized town, it is not very heavily populated.” pondered Rurik.
“Ugh, not this again…” groaned Twilight.
“What’s wrong?” asked Rurik.
“Well, whenever they see somepony that looks different from the norm around here, the townsponies tend to run and hide.” she said annoyed.
"Eh could be worse, sort of like Windhelm during the war with the Empire. The citizens were wary of any human who was not a Nord, and they were downright hostile to elves on some occasions." he said with a disappointed sigh.
“Why?” asked Twilight. She just couldn’t comprehend why someone could be so prejudiced.
“Mainly due to the whole deal with the Thalmor, who were elves: and because it was no secret that the Imperials had informants everywhere in the city. Some people though took things way too far: the guards had their hands full constantly in the Grey Quarter where the Dark Elves lived.” he said with a sigh. Before he could say anymore, Rurik felt a little tug on his jacket.
Turning around, he saw the most adorable little gray unicorn filly looking up at him with big golden eyes. He removed the mask he was wearing, leaving the hood up to keep the morning sun out of his eyes.
“Hello little one, how may I help you?” asked Rurik kindly.
“Hi! I was just wondering what you were, I’ve never seen anything like you before!” replied the little unicorn. Rurik admired the little filly for her bravery: and she certainly had spirit.
“I am a human.” he answered.
“Wow, I’ve never heard of a human before, what’s your name Mr. Human? My name’s Dinky Hooves.”
“My name is Rurik, it is very nice to meet you Dinky.” replied Rurik holding out his hand. The little unicorn put her hoof in his hand and he gave it a shake. After the hoof shake, her eyes travelled to the blade at Rurik’s hip.
“Is that a sword?” she asked with wide eyes.
“Why yes little one, it is.” he said patting Windshear’s pommel.
“Are you a Royal Guard?” she asked. This filly was certainly full of questions.
“No child, but I am a knight where I come from.” explained Rurik.
“Wow! That is so cool!” she said with excitement.
Before Dinky could bombard him with any more questions, a wall eyed gray Pegasus with the same golden eyes as Dinky and bubbles on her flank flew over from one of the buildings. Rurik could tell that she probably had problems with her vision as her flight pattern was rather erratic and she nearly ran right into Rurik who took a casual step back, just avoiding getting knocked to the ground.
“Sorry about that mister!” said the pegasus with an embarrassed tone.
“Oh, it’s quite alright. No harm, no foul. I take it that this charming little one belongs to you?” asked Rurik.
“Yep! This is my little muffin!” said the Pegasus proudly. The little unicorn walked over and gave her mother a hug. Rurik smiled at the
adorable sight before him.
Before any more of a conversation could develop, a certain rainbow maned Pegasus flew down from her perch on a cloud and landed
next to the little filly and her mother and greeted everyone.
“Hey Ditzy, Dinky, Twilight,” she said before turning to the human, “Rurik.” she said in a friendly tone.
“Hi Rainbow Dash! How’s it going?” asked Ditzy.
“Pretty good, how about you guys?”
“Great! We still on for lunch later?” asked Ditzy.
“For one of my oldest friends, of course!” replied Dash throwing her foreleg over Ditzy.
“It’ll be great to see you again Rainbow Dash!” said Ditzy with an adorable smile; now Rurik knew where Dinky got it from.
“Alright, you guys go on ahead, I’ll catch up to you at Sugar Cube Corner.” said Dash.
“Okay see ya there!” said Ditzy waving a hoof.
“Goodbye Mr. Rurik!” said Dinky waving a little hoof. Rurik smiled and waved back.
“Goodbye little one.” he said with a friendly wave.
“So, what are you guys up to?” asked Dash.
“Nothing much really, going over to Applejack’s farm to check up on Rurik’s friend.” said Twilight.
“Oh, the dragon: last I saw he was sleeping up in the field when I went over the farm earlier.” she said with a shrug.
“Well, he does like to sleep in.” said Rurik with a small chuckle.
“Well, it was good chatting with you but I have a lunch to get to. See ya later!” With a wave of her hoof Rainbow Dash took to the air like the bolt of rainbow colored lightning that was her cutie mark, causing the Nord’s mouth to involuntarily drop open.
“Uh Rurik, you may catch flies.” chuckled Twilight.
“Damn: she’s fast!” said Rurik, his face showing genuine shock at how fast the cyan Pegasus moved. Twilight was not pleased with his choice in language, but reminded herself that he was not from around here.
“That’s Rainbow for you.” replied Twilight with a small chuckle.
Rurik shook himself out of his awe before replacing his mask and following Twilight towards Sweet Apple Acres.
Odahviing stretched his muscles out and grimaced a bit as some of his bones audibly cracked. He had slept well, despite having to curl up and sleep in a farmer’s field rather than the preferable mountain top. The large Dovah looked about; he felt as if he were being watched, and it was a feeling that he did not enjoy.
“Laas! Ya Niir!” hissed Odahviing.
Odahviing’s vision darkened briefly before returning to normal save for three small red auras in a nearby bush. The large red dragon focused his hearing and smiled at the three little ones hiding in the bushes.
“Wow, that’s a really big dragon!” whispered one of them.
“We really shouldn’t be here, mah sis’ll have our heads if she catches us!” whispered another.
“I’m with Applebloom on this one Scootaloo, Applejack told us to stay out of this field.” said the third.
Odahviing couldn’t help but smile at their antics. He knew that some of his fellow Dov considered him a real sucker for children, but none of them dare say so to his face for fear that he would annihilate them on the spot: he was bigger than most of the dragons on Tamriel, and stronger too. He decided that the little fillies’ hiding had gone on long enough and cleared his throat.
“Come out little ones, I mean you no harm and I already know that you are hiding in the bushes in front of me.” he said; a small smile appearing on his scaly face. Cautiously, the three little ones walked out of the bushes stopped.
The one in the middle was a Unicorn with a bright white coat and pink and purple mane. To her right stood a yellow pony with a red mane and a big pink bow in it. The third was an orange Pegasus with a purple mane and tail.
“You may approach, I will not hurt you. I give my word as a Dovah, or Dragon in your language.” he boomed.
Once more, the three fillies walked cautiously forward and stopped a few yards in front of the large dragon.
“There, now I can properly see you. I am Odahviing, what are your names little ponies?” he asked politely. One by one, the little fillies introduced themselves.
“I’m Sweetie Bell.” said the Unicorn.
“Ahm Apple Bloom.” replied the little yellow pony. The last one to introduce herself was the orange pegasus filly.
“I’m Scootaloo, and together we’re …” The three fillies suddenly all yelled at once with such volume that for a split second Odahviing thought that they were using the Thu’um.
“THE CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!”
“I see… what is it that you are crusading for?” asked Odahviing.
“Our Cutie Marks of course!” said Sweetie Bell.
“What are these… marks you speak of?” he asked.
“A cutie mark shows us what our special talent will be, they appear suddenly on a pony’s flank when they discover what they're good at!” explained Scootaloo.
“I see, and you wish to earn this heraldry of sorts by doing what exactly?” boomed the large drake.
“All kinds o’ stuff! We never know what we could be good at!” said Apple Bloom.
“So little ones, why have you come out to the field after your elder has told you not to? Did you think that it would earn you your heraldry?” asked Odahviing raising a scaly eyebrow.
“Well, sis told us that there was a dragon sleeping’ here and we’ve never really seen a full grown dragon before. We wanted ta see one up close, and try ta git our Cutie Marks in Dragon Observin’.” explained Apple Bloom sheepishly.
“Curiosity is not a bad thing, but too much of it can be little pony: you shouldn’t have disobeyed your sister. You are very fortunate that I am a civil Dovah, as some of my kind would have made a meal out of you without a second thought. Besides, a Dovah like myself can hear you from miles away, and I was able to find you relatively quick, was I not?” he asked again.
“Yeah, you did find us really fast.” agreed Scootaloo.
“Speaking of, we have company; it would appear that your sister and a few others are on their way out here. You should leave before you get yourselves in trouble. Worry not, I will not tell them that you were here.” he said with a small smile (If one could call a dragon’s smile small).
“Thanks!” They all said before galloping in the opposite direction, and Odahviing laughed quietly as the three little fillies fled over a hill.

Applejack and Steel Shod led Rurik and Twilight to the field where Odahviing was staying. She was still rather unhappy about having to house a dragon in one of her fields, but she had little choice on the matter. Rurik and Twilight had run into her and Steel Shod as they were about to go for lunch.
“Thank you for housing him in your field Miss Apple, I am quite sure that he is just as unhappy about it as you are. Dragons usually prefer a mountain top or a higher elevation rather than a field. It makes them feel more secure.” explained Rurik.
“Well, it’s alright. The North field never really produced anything much, it’s full o’ rocks anyway.” said Applejack with a shrug.
“Well, I could be of help with that problem if you wish. I am an engineer after all and I did more than just combat engineering, I was also a civil engineer.” said Rurik.
“Ah may just take ya up on yer offer sugar cube. Just so ya know though, Ah don’t make much in the way o’ money.” replied the farmer.
“I’m not asking for any.” said Rurik with a kind smile beneath his mask.
“Wow… Thank ya!” said Applejack taken aback by the man’s kind offer.
As they entered the gate to the northern field, Steel Shod suddenly tripped and fell on his face. He promptly stood and brushed himself off.
“I’m okay! I’m okay!” said the rather embarrassed Unicorn blushing beat red as he dusted himself off.
Applejack looked down, and saw what Steel had caught his foot on. She reached over with her hoof, and much to Rurik’s disbelief, picked up a good sized chunk of pitch black rock. How had she been able to grip it?! He simply pushed the thought aside to ponder later.
“Consarnit! These are the rocks Ah’m talkin’ about!” she huffed, holding the chunk of rock up for all to see. “They call the stuff Blackstone, and it’s the most common type o’ rock in all Equestria accordin’ ta Pinkie Pie and that filly knows her rocks. Comes with growin’ up on a rock farm.”
“May I see that rock?” asked Rurik removing his mask.
“Sure, ya can have the rotten thing if ya lahk.” she said handing it to him.
Rurik brought the ‘rock’ up to his face and sniffed it. His eyes went suddenly wide and his mouth dropped open in shock as he recognized the smell at once: it was one that he had experienced before on multiple occasions during his trips to the Orc stronghold of Narzulbr's Gloombound Mine.
“Applejack, you said this was the most common rock in Equestria correct?!” he asked in a very serious tone.
“Yeah, the things are damn worthless,” she replied with confusion written on her face, “Why?”
“Because this is Ebony. Where I am from, it is one of the rarest and strongest metals known to us and when forged into a solid form such as a sword or suit of armor, it becomes nearly indestructible. It is harder than even dragon scales!” exclaimed Rurik, his eyes wide in awe. Applejack soon shared the same shocked look on her face.
“So yer sayin’ that Ah’m sittin’ on a possible gold mine!?” asked the farmer.
“Pretty much; the problem though is that on Nirn, the world of my origin, there are few who can smith the stuff. It is very difficult to work with, but the results of doing so are very rewarding. It is stronger than steel that was used to make my blade, and stronger than the Dwemerethium that my armor is forged from.” said Rurik.
“This field is plum full o’ the stuff! If we could find a smith ta actually make the arms and armor we could probably sell it ta the royal guard and make tons o’ bits from a royal contract!” she explained. Twilight was furiously scribbling notes down while Steel had a look on his face that was a combination of awe and disbelief.
“The problem is that most individuals who can smith the stuff would charge you half of the income from the contract. Such people are very rare, and usually master smiths. You would also have to put in a smelter, forge, and items for improving the weapons and armor; such as a grindstone and perhaps a workbench along with an arcane enchanting table to make the more master crafted items. Even then you may need to find someone good at enchanting.” said Rurik deep in thought.
“Luckily we have a smelter, forge, workbench, an’ grindstone. We need that stuff ta make repairs ta the plows and other farm equipment, all Ah know how ta do though is repair plows with iron. It saves us bits in the long run. As fer the enchanter table, we don’t have one o’ them.” said Applejack.
“Well, my mother is one of the finest smiths in my homeland of Skyrim: She taught me how to smith all sorts of metals, and Ebony was one of them. I can teach you to forge the stuff.” said Rurik.
“Really? Ya’d do that?” asked Applejack.
“Yes, all ask for in payment is that you lodge Odahviing and allow me to keep some of the Ebony, not a large amount of it, just a little bit. If you do that I will even provide the necessary materials to build or procure an Arcane Enchanter.” offered Rurik.
“Ya got yerself a deal pardner!” said Applejack offering a hoof, which Rurik accepted.
“Alright, sounds good. Now let’s go check on Odahviing, he’s probably getting a tad lonely.” said Rurik.
With that, the four of them continued their walk into the pasture to see how the big dragon was doing. Needless to say, it took little time to find the large dragon.
“Dremyollok, greetings to you all.” said Odahviing.
“Good morning old friend, did you sleep well?” asked Rurik.
“Yes, I did indeed. Just visiting Rurik?” replied the dragon.
“For the most part, and checking up on you.” answered Rurik.
“How kind of Fahdon, it was very nice of the farmer to lend the field so I could rest, but I am growing a bit bored.” said Odahviing with a sigh.
“Worry not my friend, in a few days we will be headed to Canterlot, and I am sure that the princesses will allow you to perch upon the mountain and fly about.” said Rurik.
“That would be excellent,” replied Odahviing rearing up slowly on his hind legs and stretching his massive wings. The three ponies stood mouths agape at the impressive wingspan. Several loud pops sounded from the dragon’s back, making him sigh in relief, “Because I am feeling a bit stiff.”
Before the conversation could continue, a rainbow blur ripped through the air before stopping, revealing a very worried Rainbow Dash who quickly landed right in between Rurik and Odahviing.
“Rainbow, what’s wrong, you look all stressed out?” asked Twilight with concern.
“It’s Ditzy!” said Dash breathing heavily.
“What’s happened?” asked Steel Shod.
“Her Ex-Husband is in town again, and her husband is out of town! He caught us at the restraunt with a bunch of his scumbag friends and they took Ditzy and Dinky with them!” said Dash with worry.
“Oh No!” said Twilight and Applejack simultaneously.
“What’s all this then?” asked Rurik.
“Ditzy, the pegasus that you met this morning, was married to this higher class jerk about seven years back. He’s a noble with a lot of friends in the Royal Guards. When they were married he beat her a lot, and if her current husband’s not home, her ex shows up and gives her trouble. She and her husband have complained to the guard a lot but they never do anything, and everyone is afraid to touch him because of his connections!” explained Dash. Steel suddenly fumed with anger.
“Where were they headed?” asked Rurik.
“They were headed towards Crystal Cuisine, the really fancy restraunt in town!” said Dash.
“What’s he look like?” inquired the Nord.
“He’s a sniveling royal purple unicorn with a wand for his Cutie Mark, his name’s Viscount Bright Wand!” panted Dash, still tired from her panicked and hurried flight.
“I know that jackass: I arrested him in Canterlot a few years back for raping a mare. The bastard got off scot free after my own superior ordered me to release him, the mare ended up in a mental institution.” growled Steel with an angry stomp.
“That was before Shiny took over the guard, I am surprised that he isn’t in jail if he’s been harassing her!” said Twilight.
“ ‘Royal Guard’ is a broad term as there are actually several branches. Shining is the commander of Princess Celestia’s Solar Guards, not the entire Royal Guard. That would be Captain-General Bergmane, a pompous plot kisser with no sense of honor or dignity who values his political connections over doing his job. They have no power over each other.” fumed Steel.
“Uh, where’s Rurik?” asked Applejack suddenly, turning to where the man had been standing.
“He went that way.” said Odahviing pointing a wing back towards Ponyville.
“Oh buck!” said everypony at the same time before galloping off towards the town.

Ditzy and Dinky sat across from Ditzy’s ex husband. The Dark Purple noble may not have been physically imposing but he was doing a fine job of intimidating the mare before him and making his little daughter feel very uncomfortable. The restraunt was empty, save for Ditzy, Dinky, Bright Wand, and his four thugs. She knew full well what this was about: her ex husband and the father of her daughter wanted to stop paying Dinky’s Foal Support; money that went to help Ditzy pay for the things that her little muffin needed, and more that went into a College fund. Furthermore, Bright was forced to pay for any damage that poor Ditzy caused because it was his fault that she was so clumsy after striking her repeatedly in the head in one of their fights during their miserable two year marriage. He also had to pay the medical bills for both Derpy and Dinky. Not even the best lawyers in Canterlot were able to save him from the wrath of Princess Celestia when she oversaw the divorce case in her court. It was not that he couldn’t afford it with his massive fortune, he just felt that he should not have to pay for his former wife and that little Dinky was her responsibility.
Slowly, Bright opened his suitcase and removed some papers, floating them across to Ditzy. The young mare didn’t even need to look at the papers to know that they were bank forms and official documents that would end the foal support and medical/accident payments: something that Ditzy’s Mail mare salary could not cover, nor could her new husband’s clock business.
“I’m not signing the papers Bright.” growled Ditzy.
“Oh come now; do you really think you have a choice in the matter? If you don’t sign it I will see to it that Dinky
comes and lives with me in Canterlot and that you never see her again!” hissed the stallion.
“The Princesses will never let that happen!” yelled Ditzy. The mare felt a sudden jolt of pain shoot through the side of her face as her former husband slapped her with his hoof across the face.
“You know, I came here trying to be reasonable with you and to get you to simply stay out of my life without having to resort to violence; but as usual your tiny, insignificant female brain has forced my hoof. Now sign you stupid mare!” her barked once more shoving the quill and papers at her.
“No.” she said flatly.
The look on Bright Wand’s face was nothing short of enraged. He threw the papers to the side before leaping across the table and tackling Ditzy out of her chair. She felt another painful slap cross her face.
“You stupid mare! You think you can cross me and get away with it!?” he roared slapping her again. “You are nothing but a worthless tramp!”
Dinky was crying her little eyes out. The little foal managed to free herself from the earth pony goon that was holding her back away from the table and ran over pounding on her biological father with her little hooves.
“Leave mommy alone!” she shouted through her tears. The poor little filly only received a hoof to the side of her face hard enough to send her sprawling across the floor.
“DINKY!” cried Ditzy in horror, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Shut up you dolt! I am sick of you and that disgusting little accident you call a daughter! You are nothing! I am one of the most powerful unicorns in Equestria!” spat Bright.
Before the unicorn could continue beating his ex-wife, a sudden powerful force slammed into the side of Bright’s face sending the abusive stallion smashing into a nearby table. The stallion stood back up to see the shape of a tall bipedal creature suddenly appear out of thin air standing between him, Ditzy and Dinky with his fists clenched.
“Ditzy, are you able to walk?” asked Rurik.
“Yeah.” sniffled Ditzy.
“Get Dinky and get out the back. Go to the hospital and get yourself looked at. I will handle these scum.” said Rurik with barely contained rage.
Ditzy wasted no time in getting Dinky and heading out the back door. Rurik faced down the five ponies before him: there was an Earth Pony, two Pegasi and a Unicorn in addition to Bright Wand.
“This did not concern you creature, and it was foolish of you to intervene. You are going to wish for death when I am through with you!” hissed the Unicorn.
“Outside.” growled Rurik.
“Very well, it makes no difference to me wether I mop the floor or the ground with you.” sneered Bright arrogantly. “Come on boys, let’s make this fast; I still have a pair of witless mares to track down and make cooperate.”
The ponies walked out into the streets first, Rurik exited the building behind them. Five ponies against one very pissed off vampire was not good odds for the ponies, even in the broad daylight. The five over confident stallions turned to face Rurik, smug looks were plastered on their faces.
“So, any last words before we begin this one sided fight?” Bright asked arrogantly.
“Yeah, do you know what the guards in my homeland’s capital call pieces of trash like you?” hissed Rurik.
“What?” asked the pompous unicorn arrogantly.
“Suicides.” the man answered darkly.
It was with that word that the fight began. Rurik did not even bother drawing Windshear: he wanted to feel their bones break under the blows from his fists, nor did he wish to kill anyone. The Pegasi attacked first, diving down at breakneck speed towards him. Rurik had predicted this and simply stood patiently, his blue eyes staring out from behind his mask. He knew that directly behind him was the brick wall of the restraunt. Just as the two Pegasis’ hooves touched Rurik’s clothing, the crafty vampire turned into a cloud of mist. The two impetuous stallions slammed into the brick wall, knocking themselves out cold, the mist dissipating. The Earth Pony noticed all too late the shape that had appeared suddenly on the rooftop and leapt down upon him, slamming a gloved fist into the side of the shocked stallion’s head and sending him off to slumber town.
By now a crowd had gathered, and Steel, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Twilight arrived just in time to witness Bright and his Unicorn thug begin rapid firing magical bolts towards Rurik, throwing up dust and bits of rock. When the dust cleared, all that remained was a scorch mark where Rurik had been.
"NO!" yelled Twilight in despair
“I think we got him bo-Ooof!” cried the unicorn as Rurik delivered an elbow to the back of his head, knocking him out as well. Before Bright could fire another blast, his opponent was gone yet again, a cloud of mist where he had once been standing.
“Where are you, you bastard!?” roared the Bright.
“Right behind you.” said Rurik’s cold voice.
Bright’s eyes widened in terror and he released a shriek of ultimate suffering as a finely crafted boot slammed into his Stallionhood. The Unicorn made a futile attempt to buck Rurik in the guts. The Nord simply moved to the side and caught his hind legs and swiftly took a knee, bringing Bright’s legs down onto the raised leg. A sickening crack made many of the gathered ponies cringe as the stallion’s rear legs broke. A few of them even vomited.
Bright Wand began blubbing like a humiliated child and tried to crawl away. Rurik circled the now pitiful unicorn as he used his front legs to drag his useless back legs along, sobbing with every movement. Rurik then delivered a savage kick to the unicorn’s jaw, making him fall to the ground.
“What’s wrong? You were acting all big and tough when you were whaling on your ex-wife and your little daughter a few minutes ago in the restraunt, and when you were talking about how you were going to beat my ass into the ground! Then I broke your legs!” Rurik snarled at him.
“B-b-b-but-” began Bright, only to be cut off by his opponent yet again.
“Come on! I thought you were a badass! Hit me! Fight me! Give me a hug for Ysmir’s sake!” mocked Rurik.
This suggestion made the rather battered stallion stop blubbing and look up at the masked biped with confusion.
“W-what?!” he asked shakily.
In response, Rurik grabbed the pony by the neck and hauled him off the ground to eye level, and removed the mask, revealing a very serious look on his face.
"You will leave this town with your goons and never return. Furthermore, if you harass Ditzy and Dinky ever again in any way: I'll know. If I have to come after you again, no amount of connections you have will save you. I have plenty of blood on my hands as it is, but I won't lose sleep over a bit more; do you understand me you misogynist piece of Skeever shit!?”
Bright Wand swiftly shook his head up and down with wide eyes.
“Good, now get out of here, I am beginning to feel a bit peckish, and you are looking like a good main course.” said Rurik low enough so that only he and Bright could hear.
To emphasize his point, he allowed his eyes to glow their sinister red before changing back to their disguised blue. He threw the well beaten Unicorn to the ground as most of the ponies in Ponyville looked upon him with awe. Royal Guards under the command of Lieutenant Blood Mane moved forward to arrest Bright Wand and his goons, the Lieutenant himself walked up to Rurik and snapped into a salute. Blood Mane was bright white like most of the Solar Guard look due to the enchantments on their armor, but sported a blood red mane instead of the standard blue and had a rather ugly looking set of scars down the right side of his face.
“We’ll take it from here Sir Rurik, damn fine job handling the situation!” said the lieutenant in a gruff voice, his intense golden eyes showing admiration.
“It was my pleasure lieutenant.” replied Rurik clasping his fist over his heart and inclining his head; the standard salute of the Stormcloak Army.
As soon as he turned around, the town’s ponies began stomping their hooves in applause and cheering. At that moment, Rurik knew that the Ponies would be less inclined to hide from him in terror when he walked down the street. He was soon approached by an older mare with a tan coat and white mane. Her cutie mark was a rolled up scroll with a blue ribbon tied around it, and a set of glasses sat on her aged face.
“That stallion caused us a quite a bit of trouble in the past, as the mayor, you have the thanks of everypony here.” said the mare.
“It was nothing ma’am, I was doing what was needed. Where I come from men who beat women and children usually earn the same fate. I just hope that Mrs. Hooves and little Dinky will be alright.” said Rurik with concern. Before the mayor could answer, Twilight walked up to him.
"She is in the hospital, if you will follow me I will take you to there." said Twilight.
"Thank you Twilight." replied the tall Nord before the two of them walked off together towards Ponyville General Hospital.
Rather than walk to Twilight’s home, she teleported Rurik and herself away before Applejack and Steel Shod had a chance to volunteer to help find Spike. Despite being a fearsome aristocrat of the night, Rurik nearly vomited after the teleportation. While he himself had experience with such magics, they were for short distances, while the spell that Twilight had cast had carried them from across town all the way back to Golden Oaks Library. Rurik quickly found his potion satchel and popped a tonic that he had specifically created for nausea and was feeling better in no time. By the time he had recovered, Twilight was back in the room with one of Spike’s baby scales in her telekinetic grasp. Rurik quickly took the scale and began digging around his potion satchel once more. Before he did anything however he had Twilight take a seat.
“Okay Twilight. I will find him, but I need you to stay here.” Said Rurik.
“Why?! I caused this, I should help find him and apologize!” Twilight said with a worry filled voice.
“Because if he sees you he may feel you are still upset, if not more upset with him and bolt again; and I prefer to find the young drake as soon as possible. It is getting dark out after all.” Explained Rurik calmly.
“I- I understand.” She relented with a sigh.
“Everything will be fine Twilight; I will do my best to get him back.” He said patting her on the head.
“Thanks Rurik.” said Twilight sadly.
“There, now let’s get mixing!” said Rurik digging out some ingredients. “Let’s see here: Rock Warbler egg, void salts, troll fat, Dwemer oil, and some frost and fire salts.” Rurik thought out loud, “Twilight, bring me the scale and a bowl please.” Twilight nodded and went to the kitchen before returning with a good sized wooden bowl. Rurik wasted no time in mixing up the ingredients, save Spike’s scale and the fire salts. Once the rest of the ingredients were mixed, he put in Spike’s scale; Twilight watching him the entire time.
“What about the fire salt things?” asked Twilight pointing a hoof at the bowl of fire salts.
“Not yet, there is one more ingredient I need.” he replied.
“What is-” Twilight stared in horror as Rurik took out a dagger and slashed open his own hand before clenching his fist over the bowl and allowing his blood to drip into the bowl. Once he was finished, he used healing spell to seal the wound before grabbing the fire salts.
“Vampire blood,” he explained, “now we add the fire salts.” With that, he dumped the glowing orange material into the bowl. There was a small flash as the fire salts made contact with the ingredients in the bowl, which turned the mixture into vapor. Rurik closed his eyes and inhaled the vapor deeply. After a few seconds, he opened his eyes and before him he saw small foot prints: Spike’s foot prints. Where Spike had walked was identified by a light blue aura, making it easier to see in the growing darkness as the sun was still setting and the sky was growing darker. In one hand, Rurik readied a detect life spell, while the other he kept free in case he needed Windshear.
Rurik followed the prints out the front door and through the town of Ponyville. The trail led him across the town once more, and as Rurik saw the Everfree Forest looming closer. Fortunately the tracks stopped under a small bridge across the creek just outside Ponyville. He cast the detect life spell and sure enough, a little blue flame appeared under the bridge where Spike was hiding. The vampire breathed a sigh of relief. Rurik walked slowly, trying not to make too much noise despite the heavy armor he was wearing, a difficult task in itself. As he got closer to where Spike was hiding he was relieved yet again when he heard the young dragon snoring. Quietly, he ducked under the bridge to find him sleeping soundly and sat down beside the tired little dragon. Rurik was thankful that he had left his helmet back at the Library, as the sight of a Dwemer helm and its emotionless face is not exactly one of the most calming things to awaken to.
“Spike.” Rurik said softly as he gently shook the small drake from his slumber. Spike awoke with a bit of a start before remembering who Rurik was.
“Oh, uh hi Rurik…” he said cautiously, hoping he had gotten the Nord's name correct.
“And hello to you as well Spike. Now, I must ask why you are sleeping under a bridge and not at home where it is safer.” Replied Rurik kindly.
“Well, that’s kind of a long story and I’m sure you really don’t want to hear about it.” He answered glumly.
“Oh nonsense Spike, you can tell me what’s wrong; after all my job is helping folks where I come from.” Rurik answered with a kind smile.
“Why do you want to help me? You barely know me!” Spike pointed out.
“Because helping folks is what I do Spike. I don’t expect any reward for it, I just do what I can for people, or dragons in your case. I do so because it pleases the gods that I worship: they gave me life, so I figure that I owe them big time.” Rurik replied with a shrug. Spike thought hard about it and decided to give Rurik a chance; after all he had saved Dinky and Ditzy from that nasty stallion and asked for nothing in return. Spike let out a small sigh and decided he would tell him what happened.
“Okay, if you really want to know what happened I’ll tell you.”
“I’m all ears.” Said Rurik nodding his head.
“Twilight was doing some research and needed some book that she has. I had gone through and re-shelved every book just like she has me do once or twice a week. Well, she couldn’t find it and instantly she blames me for it not being where it belonged. Then she lectured me for close to ten minutes about how irresponsible I am for not putting things where they are supposed to go. I told her that I put the books exactly where they were supposed to go and that maybe she had taken it off the shelf and forgotten to put it back where it belonged.” Explained Spike.
“Let me guess; she didn’t take it too well?” inquired Rurik.
“That’s putting it mildly. She blew a gasket and went on a rant about how it couldn’t have been her because she would never forget to put a book back from where she got it. Then, she asks me if I can do anything right. I got really upset and told her that apparently I couldn’t. Before she said anything back I left, came here, sat under the bridge and fell asleep until you came along and woke me up.” replied Spike.
“All this over a book?” asked Rurik with some confusion.
“It’s not the first time that she has freaked out over nothing, but it was the worst she has ever taken it out on me. The worst part is that she was right: I am irresponsible, and I really can’t do anything right.” the small drake sighed sadly.
“What makes you say that?” inquired Rurik.
“How old do you think I am?” asked Spike.
“Around eight to ten years old?” guessed Rurik.
“Try fifteen years old.” Groused Spike. “Twilight hatched me when she was five in a magic test that got her into Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns: not an easy thing.”
“I see. So why haven’t you grown at all?” Rurik inquired.
“Because dragons grow depending on how greedy they are, at least here any ways.” Explained Spike, earning a nod from Rurik. “But because I haven’t grown I haven’t matured either, so even though I am fifteen years old I am still a baby and therefore I tend to muck things up quite a bit: I mean I couldn’t even protect the two mares I love the most.” He sighed. Rurik looked at him sympathetically and patted him on the head.
“You weren’t with them, there was nothing you could have done, and even if you were, could you have taken on a group of trained mercenaries?” asked Rurik in a kind manner.
“No.” replied Spike.
“Exactly. Also, why not go somewhere you would have a proper roof over your head rather than under a bridge?” asked Rurik.
“For one, any of Twilight’s friends’ homes is where she would have checked first and I don’t really want to deal with her lectures at the moment. Plus, most of the town hates me.” Spike explained sadly.
“Why does most of the town hate you?”
“Because remember how I said dragons grow depending on how greedy they are?” asked Spike.
“Aye.” Said Rurik.
“A few years ago, I let my greed get the best of me. I became a gigantic rampaging monster without the ability to reason and destroyed nearly half the town. The ponies see me as some kind of freak because of that, and I really can’t blame them.” replied Spike.
“Well, I know how you feel there.” Sympathized Rurik.
“How could you possibly know what it’s like to be seen as a freak or a monster if not both?” Spike asked with a bit of frustration. Rurik just smiled.
“Spike, I will show you why, just do not be afraid. No matter what I look like I am still me.” Said Rurik. Spike shook his head in response. Rurik removed his disguise to reveal his true humanoid form: the deathly pale skin, the glowing red eyes, and the pitch black hair replacing his “normal” features.
“Whoa.” Was the only word that Spike could say as he gazed at Rurik’s new features.
“I’m a vampire Spike, and on top of that I was born with the blood and soul of a dragon from my world. So yes, I know quite well what it is like to be considered a freak and a monster." Explained Rurik.
"Really?" asked Spike with amazement.
"If I'm lying I'm dying." Confirmed Rurik.
Also, I would much appreciate it if what I have showed and told you stays between you, me, and the bridge.” Chuckled Rurik.
“I won’t tell anyone, just as long as you don’t try and make me into a snack!” replied Spike.
“Deal.” Said Rurik with a smile before reactivating his disguise. “Now what are you going to do about Twilight?”
“What do you mean?” asked Spike.
“Well, I talked to her; which is the reason I am here with you. She feels pretty bad about how she treated you and she is also worried sick about you. Sometimes folks just lash out when they are angry or stressed and they hurt those who they love without meaning to. It may be unprofessional, but it is human and apparently pony nature.” Said Rurik with a shrug.
“I suppose I could forgive her.” Sighed Spike. “She has looked after me since I was born after all.”
“That’s the spirit, now let’s get you back home: I will be leaving for Canterlot in a few days and I have yet to look some things over that the princesses said they were sending me.” Said Rurik his face betraying that he really wasn’t looking forward to reading over the dossiers.

As soon as the two of them had walked through the door, Spike was swept into a bone crushing hug by Twilight.
“Spike! I’m so sorry for acting like I did; can you forgive me?” she asked with tears still in her eyes.
“I can.” Replied Spike meekly and giving Twilight a hug as well. By the time that Twilight had both turned to thank Rurik, he had already gone down to the basement.
Rurik sat at the small round table in the basement and began to remove his armor. On the table before him in several large but organized piles were the dossiers he had asked for from Princess Celestia. After removing his suit of armor, Rurik put on his sleeping robe and popped the cork off another bottle of Black-Briar Reserve mead and began reading about the possible suspects.
“This is going to be one long night.” Rurik grumbled before taking a swig of his mead.
The next morning, Twilight woke early to check on Rurik’s progress. Much to her surprise, she came down the stairs to see Spike and Rurik chatting over pancakes.
“Good morning Twilight.” The two said greeting her politely.
“Good morning you two.” She replied with a pleasant smile. “Rurik, how did the reading go last night?”
“It went well. I was able to read through the dossiers and had Spike send them back to the princess about ten minutes ago.” Explained Rurik.
“You must have been up all night! Aren’t you tired?” asked Twilight.
“Not really, no. Being undead has plenty of benefits, in particular that I don’t need sleep all too often.” He explained while Spike went back into the kitchen to fix more pancakes for Twilight, and as soon as the young dragon was out of the room, Rurik lowered his voice so that only Twilight could hear him.
“Your brother is in the clear. He has no indications of being a part of the conspiracy. Commander Steel Shod is also clear as he has only recently returned from the Griffon Empire.” Explained Rurik, causing her to breathe a sigh of relief. While she had no doubt of Shining Armor’s loyalty to the princess, she knew little of Duke Steel Shod and while she’d never shown it, had been worried about his spending time with Applejack. Now she felt more at ease.
“So when are we headed out for Canterlot?” asked Twilight.
“Tomorrow morning. I will just have to speak with Odahviing. One thing about staying there concerns me however.” said Rurik.
“What’s that?” asked Twilight.
“Seeing your cantankerous brother again; I would rather not have to break his nose a second time.” Sighed Rurik.
“I always knew that Shining could be a bit of a bull head, but I have never seen him act like that before.” said Twilight, “I wonder what his problem was that day.”
“Who knows,” Answered Rurik with a shrug,
“Well, at least you are done with the files. I am going to the train station when it opens to pick up some tickets for the girls and I. I assume you will be flying?” Twilight inquired.
“Aye that is the quickest way to travel, so that is how I will be getting there: but if you want I will come along with you to get your tickets. I need to get out of the house for a bit.” Said Rurik looking out the window.
“Sure, no problem!” Replied Twilight with a smile.
It didn’t take long for Rurik and Twilight made their way to reach the train station. Rurik showed much interest in the locomotive that was waiting at the station, asking the engineer quite a few questions about how the machine worked. Twilight waited a few minutes for Rurik to finish speaking to the engineer.
“So, you have many of these railroads here in Equestria?” asked Rurik curiously.
“Oh yes! Railroads run all over Equiis, in fact they are what connect us to the other countries and they make travel and trade so much easier!” stated Twilight.
“Our engineers could probably cook something similar up, but we rely mostly on airships; lots and lots of airships. Almost all of our technology is developed from ancient Dwemer machinery, we just give it a more Nordic look.” explained Rurik with a smile.
“We have airships too, though they are a lot slower than the train though.” Said Twilight.
“Why is that?” Inquired Rurik.
“Well, they use a really big balloon, propellers, and hot air to fly, and they are still a relatively new innovation.” Answered Twilight.
“The ones we use don’t have any balloons, propellers, or hot air; they use a specialized engine powered by a Dwemer Centurion Dynamo Core. These cores are a source of possibly limitless energy developed by the Dwemer to power their automatons, airships, and some weapons and other machines that they created. We still haven’t been able to replicate them, but we do find them quite often.” Explained Rurik. Twilight’s mouth hung wide open at the thought of such a thing existing, making Rurik chuckle a bit at the awestruck look on her face.
“How fast do your airships go?” asked Twilight.
“Well, it depends. At top speed, the passenger and merchant vessels can cross all of Skyrim in about a day, while the military vessels vary in their speed. The smaller frigates can cross the whole country in about half that, while the capital ships take quite a bit longer due to their size and the amount of ballistae they are carrying on them. Problem is, running at top speed has its risks. The Dynamo core is only one part of the equation, another part being steam. Going at full steam constantly can overheat the engine which can cause rather nasty results. These results are not limited to but including catastrophic failure, or in simpler terms, an explosion that could kill everyone on board.” Answered Rurik.
“Sounds like it’s risky.” Said Twilight.
“Well, like any new technology there are risks; that is why there’s laws in place, and plenty of penalties for captains who push the limits.” Replied Rurik with a shrug. Before the conversation could continue, they were met by Rarity, who was carrying a package on her back.
“Ah! Rurik darling! There you are! I have finished the clothing that you requested!” said Rarity with excitement, a blue aura surrounding her horn and enveloping the box, lifting it, and opening it. Before Rurik were several brand new belted tunics, all with matching pants and pairs of shoes. Rurik took one of the belted tunics and pants and looked it over. The quality of the garment was superb, putting even Radiant Raiment to shame.
“Excellent work Rarity, excellent. How much do I owe you?” asked Rurik.
“Nothing at all darling.” Said Rarity with a kind smile.
“But miss Rarity, you must have worked so hard on these! Plus I am sure that you took time away from important orders to make these.” Said Rurik, trying to convince her to accept some gold.
“Rurik darling: you saved my life, and more importantly to me the life of my friend. That is more than enough payment for me. Please; save your gold for when you get to Canterlot.” She said kindly.
“Thank you Miss Rarity.” Said Rurik humbly.
“You are most certainly welcome.” Replied Rarity.
After a stop to the library to drop off the clothing and change out of his armor; Rurik decided that he was going to go and check in with Odahviing and see how the large Dovah was faring. Twilight asked if she too could come along; and Rurik agreed to her request. As they approached the field, Rurik heard Odahviing’s booming laughter, causing him to have a look of confusion on his face. As He and Twilight crested the hill they saw Odahviing speaking with three small fillies; fillies that Twilight knew.
“Rurik: How is he with children!?” Asked Twilight with some panic.
“He’s the biggest softy in all of Tamriel when it comes to kids. Just don’t say that to his face or he might see it as an insult.” Replied Rurik.
“Why would he see it as an insult?” asked Twilight.
“Because other dragons back home suggested that it made him look weak… it usually ended very badly for them;” Answered Rurik with a small smile on his face, “anyhow, let’s go and check on the old Dovah, I want to let him know that we are going to be headed out in the morning.”
“Right behind you.” Said an unsure Twilight.
As the two approached the dragon and the trio of fillies, they picked up on the conversation that they were having, and apparently Applebloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Bell were regaling Odahviing with some of the more comical stories of their attempts to gain their cutie marks.
“And then, the thing exploded all over the place! Cake batter everywhere!” exclaimed Scootaloo.
“None of us got our cutie marks, and my sister made us clean up the mess.” Said Sweetie Bell glaring at Scootaloo.
“Yeah, Cutie Mark Crusaders Cake Bakers didn’t turn out all too well.” Finished Applebloom. Odahviing just laughed at the story in the form of a deep booming chuckle.
“You three certainly have quite the adventures.” He said with a large smile.
“Indeed it sounds like they do.” Came a voice from the side. The three fillies’ eyes widened as they turned to see Rurik and Twilight Sparkle.
“Oh, uh, hi Twilight.” Said Sweetie Bell nervously.
“Hello you three.” said Twilight with a smile.
“Hi Twilight!” replied the other two fillies.
“Greetings.” Said Odahviing politely to his new guests.
“I see that you have made some new friends.” Rurik pointed out.
“Yes fahdon, is everything alright?” asked Odahviing.
“Yes, everything is fine. I just wanted to let you know that we are leaving for Canterlot tomorrow. We leave in the early morning.” Said Rurik.
“Of course, understood.” Said Odahviing.
“Hey, aint you the one who saved Dinky and Ditzy?” asked Applebloom.
“I only did the right thing. I’m just glad that both of them are okay.” Replied Rurik meekly.
“Oh don’t be so humble! You’re a hero!” said Sweetie Bell.
“If you want to see me as such, I’m not going to stop you. All I did was stop a bad situation from getting worse.” Said Rurik with a shrug.
“Seriously, you are almost as awesome as Rainbow Dash!” said Scootaloo.
“Well thank you, now what are your names?” asked Rurik. The fillies introduced themselves in similar manner to what they had done with Odahviing, making Rurik chuckle a bit. After a brief conversation with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Rurik and Twilight headed back to the town, arriving back at the library.
“So, what time are you going to get going tomorrow?” asked Twilight.
“Probably around seven in the morning. I want to get going early in the day. You?” replied Rurik.
“We will all be at the train station at around nine in the morning.” Answered Twilight.
“Sounds good; I have some preparations to make and then I plan on making some notes for Applejack. After that I am going to go to sleep early.” Said Rurik.
“Sounds good, I will see you in the morning or in Canterlot!” said Twilight. The rest of the day went by as planned, rather unusual from any other day that Rurik had. Normally whenever he made plans, something almost always came up that made them go awry. If only things went like this on a more regular basis.
The next morning, Rurik awoke early and performed his exercises before donning his armor and strapping Windshear to his hip, one dagger to his opposite hip and sheathing the last dagger to his boot before leaving the library and making his way to Sweet Apple Acres. He found Odahviing awaiting him in the field and wasted no time in climbing onto the Dovah’s neck before the large red drake took to the air and flew towards Canterlot, the large onion shaped domes of the city’s towers making it impossible to miss.
Kingdom of Skyrim, College of Winterhold, Winterhold Province.
Serana awoke the next morning with the sun. Despite being a vampire, her beloved husband’s insistence on keeping his human sleeping patterns had rubbed off on her. She smiled at the thought of the man she loved, remembering the day that she finally said yes to spending the rest of her uh, unlife with him as if it had happened yesterday. She was broken from her reminiscing when one of the Archmage’s secretaries was stopped by one of her guards.
“It’s okay Gaston, she can come in.” said Serana.
“As you wish milady.” Replied the ebony armored vampire with a thick Breton accent. The secretary was allowed to enter the room where she politely inclined her head to Serana.
“The Archmage will see you now lady Serana.” Said the secretary.

Capital Province; Equestria.
Odahviing flew noiselessly through the air, getting closer and closer to Canterlot. From what little Spike had told him about the city, it was just over a thousand years old, and just by seeing the way that the city was built so that it was literally hanging on the side of the mountain was an impressive engineering feat.
“Stay above the clouds Fahdon, I would rather not be seen just yet.” Said Rurik.
“Of course Rurik.” Answered Odahviing whilst following his master’s wishes.
About a mile out, Rurik noticed three shapes rocket into the air at high speed. As they neared, Rurik could make out the shape of three Pegasi in what appeared to be colorful jumpsuits. The three flew directly over him before wheeling around and catching up to him whilst slowing themselves to match Odahviing’s speed. Rurik looked to his right where a yellow Pegasus with a blaze orange mane flew next to his head and raised her voice so Rurik could hear her over the wind and Odahviing’s beating wings.
“Follow us, the princess has a landing area set up for you!” she yelled over the noise.
Rurik simply nodded and the Pegasi pulled ahead and lead Rurik down. The short amount of time he had been flying above the clouds with the Pegasi that the princess had sent had brought them to the city. Odahviing began to slow his descent as he came closer to Canterlot, and Rurik saw the area that they were being led to, a large courtyard, large enough to comfortably fit two Dov with their wings fully spread. It did not take too long for the three Pegasi and dragon with his rider to land. Rurik dismounted the dragon, removing the Aetherium Staff from his back to lean on, and just in case he needed to use it, before turning to the huge drake to speak to him.
“Odahviing, I want you to take wing and perch at the summit of the mountain above. Should I need your aid, I will give you a shout.” Said Rurik.
“Of course Rurik. Please be careful my friend.” Requested the dragon.
“I shall do my best.” Replied Rurik.
“Fair enough, good luck thuuri.” Finished Odahviing before taking to the air, leaving Rurik with three awestruck Wonderbolts.
“That was the damndest thing I have ever seen.” Remarked the orange Pegasus as she watched the drake fly off.
“What, never seen a dragon before?” asked Rurik.
“Well yes, I have seen a dragon, but I have never seen someone with the stones enough to try and ride one!” answered Spitfire with awe.
“Few people possess the strength of will to do so. It is a rare individual who can tame a dragon.” Rurik replied.
“Name’s Captain Spitfire, leader of Her Royal Majesty’s Wonderbolts flight team.” Said Spitfire offering a hoof, which Rurik took in his hand and shook.
“Rurik Skull-Taker; chief engineer to His Majesty High King Ulfric Stormcloak of Skyrim.” Replied Rurik.
Before the conversation could continue, a commotion was heard coming from the palace, the sounds of quite a few hoof beats and orders being shouted by a very arrogant voice. Spitfire began to look worried.
“Soarin, go and find Princess Celestia. Quickly.” She ordered.
Soarin didn’t need to be told twice, flying quickly out of the courtyard to search for the princess. The doors to the courtyard were thrown open and about fifty guards entered the area. Leading them was a unicorn who could only be described by one word: fop. He wore perfectly polished armor that Rurik could see his reflection in and that was decorated with gold, silver and precious stones. His coat was pure white, his mane chocolate, and he wore his moustache in a fancy, heavily waxed handlebar style. The part that nearly made Rurik’s sides split with laughter was the hair style that he wore. The long locks of hair stood about an inch high before it evenly parted in the middle and flowed down the sides of his face.
“So this is the rapscallion who harmed the Viscount?” asked the noble in an effeminate voice.
“Aye that I am. He should have kept his hooves to himself rather than use them to beat his ex-wife and little daughter.” Replied Rurik, removing the Aetherial Staff from his back and leaning on it. Beneath his helm, Rurik wore an amused look upon his face.
“Oh, you will pay for making such false accusations against the Viscount’s good name!” hissed the stallion.
“You must be Captain-General Bergmane.” Said Rurik.
“Indeed I am Captain-General Bergmane.” Replied the Captain.
“I figured as much.” Said Rurik smugly.
“Oh? And how did you figure that out?” asked Bergmane curiously.
“Because I can smell the scent of a fop at a mile away. Tell me, are you wearing an ungodly amount of cologne or have you just returned from an adventure at the local whore house?” mocked the Nord. Several guards did their best to hide their laughter, succeeding at their task as Bergmane was too shocked by Rurik’s comment to notice. “Also, you should fire your barber, as it appears that he has made your mane look similar to a rump.”
“HOW! HOW DARE YOU!” shrieked an incensed Bergmane, his magic glowing about his horn with a matching aura wrapping around the handle of a golden hilted rapier at his side. Rurik’s right hand moved from his staff, the left hand remaining on it, and came to rest upon the pommel of the Skyforge steel dagger at his side.
“Are you going to do something or are you going to stand there looking like a fool?” asked Rurik unimpressed, his finger reflexively tapping the dagger’s pommel.
“Filthy monkey! Why I shall-” began Bergmane, only to be cut off mid-sentence.
“Put your weapon away and stand down Captain-General.” Came the familiar and rather aggravated voice of Princess Celestia. The foppish Unicorn bowed immediately before her.
“Please majesty, I only was defending my honor from the slights of this… thing! I beg you to allow me to do so! Do you know what he said about me, and that he assaulted Viscount Bright Wand most savagely?” he asked.
“I know about what happened with the Viscount, and it was very much warranted and long overdue. As for the slight against your honor, it is no slight if what he says is the truth.” Responded Celestia narrowing her eyes judgmentally. Bergmane’s eyes widened and his mouth moved, but no words came out.
“I believe you were about to leave Captain-General, and not stay to harass my guest?” Celestia finished for him in a stern tone. Bergman sighed and sheathed his weapon.
“Yes majesty, I was just leaving.” Replied Bergmane sullenly before turning around and walking dejectedly back out the door from whence he came. Celestia sighed before turning to Rurik.
“I am so sorry about him. I have tried to get him to retire early, but he won’t.” groaned Celestia.
“Why not just can him and be done with it?” asked Rurik.
“Because I cannot just fire him. I may wield absolute power, but it would mean breaking the laws that my sister and I laid down over a thousand years ago. As absolute monarchs Luna and I are physical personifications of the law and the moment that we arbitrarily decide to break it: we are no longer monarchs, but dictators.” Explained Celestia with a sigh.
“Good point.” Replied Rurik thoughtfully.
“Now, how about we go inside the palace? I have a room set up for you on the same floor where Luna and I have ours.” Said Celestia with a smile.
“Sounds good, then we can discuss what to do about our little problem.” Replied Rurik quietly so that only Celestia and himself could hear.

College of Winterhold; Archmage’s office.
The doors were opened and Serana entered the large room that was the Archmage’s office and his living quarters. Behind a large oak desk sat the man himself. At first glance, Reynald Le Croixeux was not what one would expect of an Archmage of Winterhold. He was about five foot six in height, had short red hair and a well-trimmed beard and moustache of the same color. His eyes were brown and in them was the youthful fire that people would expect of the 25 year old man before them. Despite his young age, Reynald was possibly the most powerful mage of the fourth era and a highly educated and intelligent young man from a noble family of High Rock. His energetic and often cocky demeanor was a well-built façade, beneath which Serana knew lay a dangerous and calculating killer. Many fools who wished challenge him in a magic duel didn’t notice until it was too late and Reynald was delivering the killing blow: he never hesitated. Despite this, he was kind and jovial with the people who he considered friends and was a very likable fellow. As he looked up from his paperwork a smile came over his face as soon as he saw who was standing in front of his desk.
“Ah! Lady Serana! What a pleasure to see you mon ami!” said Reynald in a thick Breton accent with a kind smile and standing, whilst giving a respectful bow of his head.
“Bonjour Reynald, it is good to see you as well. How is Mjoll doing? ” asked Serana, putting on the happiest face that she could despite the reason she was before him.
“She is quite well, married life is good when you are married to someone that you are actually in love with.” Said Reynald with a smile.
“Very true.” Replied Serana. She and Rurik were two of very few people who knew why Reynald had truly left High Rock. Upon turning sixteen, Reynald’s mother and father had attempted to arrange a marriage for him with the daughter of another noble house. While the intended bride was indeed beautiful, she and Reynald couldn’t stand each other. Where Reynald was a kind and generous individual, she was a selfish, self-important shrew. Despite both of their protests, the wedding was going to be carried out anyway. Unfortunately for the parents of the two parties, Reynald was a good runner, and horseman; plus his family lived near the border of Skyrim. He eventually arrived in Riften where he met Rurik, who introduced him to Mjoll the Lioness. It was after helping her recover her cherished sword Grimsever, that the Reynald and Mjoll went on many adventures together. Not long after the Civil War with the Empire had ended, they got married.
“Please, sit down! Said Reynald motioning to a chair in front of his desk. Serana sat comfortably before Reynald sat back down in his chair. “So, how is Rurik, it has been a long time since I have seen him.” He inquired.
“That’s actually why I am here. A few days ago, Rurik and Odahviing disappeared on a mission for High King Ulfric.” Explained Serana with a sigh.
“Oh goodness! What happened?” asked Reynald, concern evident in his voice. Serana told Reynald the details about what had happened and how her beloved had disappeared, and how she knew that he was still alive.
“So, he was investigating the odd weather patterns that we were having?” asked Reynald raising an eyebrow.
“Yes.” Answered Serana.
“Fils de pute! I told Ulfric that I was looking into that! The man has no patience whatsoever!” hissed Reynald. Serana bit her tongue, knowing that Ulfric had probably asked Reynald multiple times and that the young Archmage had most likely not made it top priority and forgotten due to his heavy workload, or the eyes of his pretty wife… or both.
“Regardless, I was wondering if you could help me locate him?” inquired Serana.
“Of course I can Lady Serana. I owe you and Rurik so much. After all, it was you two that gave me the courage to ask Mjoll out on our first date.” Said Reynald with a smile.
‘And helped you become Archmage. And helped you get funding to renovate the college. And pulled your ass out of the fire on multiple occasions.’ Serana thought to herself.
“So, when can we start?” asked Serana.
“We will start tomorrow morning. I would start now, but I have too much paperwork to do that has to be done before the end of the day.” answered Reynald with a sigh.
“Well then, I will leave you too it.” Said Serana gracefully rising from her chair.
“Sleep well Lady Serana. If you need anything, just let Faralda or one of the other professors know.” Said Reynald.
“Of course, thank you for your hospitality.” Said Serana with a smile.
“You are most certainly welcome.” Finished Reynald. Serana took her leave and Reynald returned to the mountain of paperwork on his desk, swearing at the stack of paper in his native Breton tongue.

Canterlot; Equestria.
Captain Shining Armor sat at the table of the conference room, doing his best to suppress his anger at the situation that he was now in. He had been briefed by Princess Celestia after she had given him a severe tongue lashing for his treatment of his sister’s rescuer. He still hated Rurik for the humiliating beat down that he had given him. The hoof of his wife on his shoulder brought him out of his thoughts turning to her to see her beautiful, and slightly sad smile. If she was beside him; he could tolerate the vampire.
The door opened, and Celestia entered the room with Rurik close behind clad in his impressive golden colored armor, with his intimidating helm tucked under his arm. Shining sighed at the sight of him, knowing full well what was coming next.
“Captain, I believe that you have something to say to Rurik here?” asked Celestia narrowing her eyes at him. Shining swallowed what remained of his pride and walked up to Rurik before looking him in the eye.
“Lord Rurik, I apologize for my actions the other day and hope you will forgive me for how I overreacted.” Said Shining. Rurik stared blankly at the unicorn before releasing a sigh and turning to Celestia with a disappointed look on his face.
“As much as I would like to accept your apology captain; I cannot.” Admitted Rurik, causing everyone in the room to gasp.
“But why not?” asked Celestia.
“Kulaas, in Skyrim we have a saying: You can’t force a Nord to apologize for something he isn’t sorry for; and it doesn’t apply to just Nords. That is exactly what you have done to Captain Shining Armor here, and while his actions towards me were wrong, you have forced him to apologize to me and he is therefore not truly contrite in his apology. If he wishes at some point to apologize once he has had time to cool off and realize the error of his ways, then that is fine. I am no longer upset at him for it, nor do I hold any ill will towards him as the debt was repaid by our duel. Just be aware that if there is a repeat of what happened between he and I in the forest, I will not hesitate to defend myself.” Replied Rurik. The room was absolutely quiet for about two minutes with everyone exchanging uncomfortable looks at each other, save for Rurik who kept a stoic face. It was Princess Celestia who broke the silence.
“That is acceptable, just don’t go over board is all I ask.” She said calmly.
“Excellent, now I was under the impression that your sister Luna would also be here.” Rurik pointed out.
“She is in the banquet hall awaiting us for breakfast. I would also like to wait for the Element Bearers to arrive before we discuss the business at hand. Is this well with you?” asked Celestia.
“Perfectly fine. They are privy to what is going on here so they should be here for the planning then.” Replied Rurik.
“Good,” she said before turning to one of the Wonderbolts, “Lieutenant Soarin, please go down to the train station and await the Element Bearer’s arrival. When they arrive, escort them here.”
“Yes majesty!” replied Soarin with enthusiasm whilst snapping into a salute, before taking wing and flying out the nearest window at top speed.
“Well, he seemed eager to do his job.” Rurik pointed out.
“That is because he gets to see his marefriend the whole way back.” Replied Celestia with a smile.
“Ah, who is he seeing?” asked Rurik, his curiosity peaked.
“Miss Rainbow Dash and the Lieutenant have been seeing each other for a few months now, the problem is that they don’t see each other all too frequently because of the distance between them and the Lieutenant’s schedule in the guard and his constant airshows.” Answered Celestia, with Rurik nodding in understanding. It was at that point that he noticed the pink Alicorn in the room.
“So, I have already gotten to meet Captain Shining Armor, which means that this must be his wife Princess Cadence?” he asked politely.
“Yes, this is my niece, Princess Mi Amore Cadenza,” she said introducing them to each other, "this is Lord Rurik Skull-Taker of the Kingdom of Skyrim.”
“Charmed your highness.” Said Rurik inclining his head respectfully.
“It is good to meet you too your grace.” Replied Cadence with a smile and a nod, while offering a hoof. Rurik took her hoof and gave a friendly handshake.
“Shall we go to breakfast then? I am sure that Luna is excited to meet you Rurik.” Said Celestia.
“Sounds good to me.” Replied Rurik.
Celestia led Rurik, Shining, and Cadence down the hall to a pair of large doors that stood about 12 feet tall and appeared to be made of solid oak. The two guard ponies on either side opened the doors and showed them into the dining hall. The room was large, with a good sized table made of cherry dominated the center, with matching chairs around it. Standing off to the side of the table was what Rurik had to admit to himself was one of the most beautiful creatures he had ever seen. She was a bit shorter than Celestia and was a midnight blue in coloration. The mane that blew ethereally was like the night sky, complete with shining, glowing stars. She was speaking to what looked like a pegasus, but instead of the usual feathery wings; they were more like those of a bat, and when he opened his mouth to speak, Rurik noticed that the pegasus had curved fangs rather than the teeth that ponies normally had, which were more suited to eating vegetables. The pony was definitely a member of the royal guard as his armor was a dead giveaway, but unlike the golden colored armor worn by Celestia’s guards, this pony wore a silver colored set. His coloration was also different from the Solar Guards, whereas most of them were white as snow or a slate grey color, this pony was pitch black. Whatever conversation the two were having had ended just before the doors were opened, and the guard saluted her and exited. Luna turned to greet her sister and the others.
“Good morning Luna.” Celestia greeted with a smile.
“Greetings sister, is this the visitor that thou hast told us of?” asked Luna.
“Yes Luna, and you are slipping again.” Said Celestia with a smile.
“Curses! I did it again?!” asked Luna; Celestia nodding her head in confirmation.
“It’s fine Luna, you are doing much better. Anyhow, Luna, this is Lord Rurik Skull-Taker of the Kingdom of Skyrim. He is his king’s chief engineer. Rurik, this is my sister Princess Luna, the Princess of the Night and Raiser of the Moon.” Said Celestia introducing the two.
“Greetings Lord Rurik, it is good to finally meet the one who put that trash scow Bright Wand in his place.” Said Luna with a smile.
“Greetings majesty; it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance as well and as for the situation with Viscount Bright Wand: it was my pleasure.” replied Rurik kindly with an incline of his head. Before the conversation could continue, a high pitched whining voice was heard coming down the hall.
“Auntie Tia!!!” it exclaimed. Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Shining Armor all rolled their eyes and their faces all held a look of annoyed dread. Rurik wondered why until the door opened and in stepped a unicorn with a pristine white coat and blonde mane. He wore an expensive looking vest with a bowtie and a rose clipped to one of his lapels.
“Auntie Tia!” he said again at finding Princess Celestia.
“What is it nephew?” said Celestia in an annoyed tone that the stallion seemed to completely disregard if he had noticed it at all.
“My good friend Captain-General Bergmane says his honor was insulted by- SWEET FAUST WHAT IS THAT MONSTROSITY!!!!???” shrieked Blueblood at noticing Rurik.
‘Oh sweet Ysmir, two fops in one morning? What fresh hell have I fallen into?’ Rurik thought to himself.
“This is Lord Rurik Skull-Taker. He is a noble from a place called Skyrim.” Said Celestia. Blueblood approached and walked a circle around the Nord, looking him up and down.
“So you are the ruffian who insulted my friend! Nobleman or no, you have no right to accuse him of anything you filthy monkey.” Blueblood began to lecture arrogantly. Rurik smiled before kneeling to eye level with the prince, and looked him dead in the eyes.
“This monkey didn’t climb to the top of the food chain to be insulted by prey.” Hissed Rurik with a terrifying grin; his fangs extending to their full length and his eyes glowing their ominous red. Blueblood’s eyes widened in a comical manner, before he shrieked in a voice akin to a scared little filly and bolted back out the door he walked in. When Rurik turned around, he was treated to the sight of three chuckling princesses: even Shining had a smirk on his face.
“Shall we sit and have something to drink? Some wine perhaps?” asked Celestia.
“I do not drink wine; but if you have some mead, that would be most welcome.” Replied Rurik with a smile.
“I think that can be arranged.” Said Luna.
The four sat down with at the table and ordered some drinks, waiting for Twilight and the others and had a small conversation that consisted mostly of them asking questions about Rurik’s homeland and what it was like; Shining simply remained silent while sitting next to his wife.
Canterlot Train Station.
Twilight and her friends stretched their legs as they exited their train car. The three hour ride from Ponyville to Canterlot always stiffened the joints no matter how spacious the train cars were. As they exited the train car, the six friends and their guard escorts noticed a familiar face.
“Soarin!” Dash exclaimed, before flying over and wrapping her coltfriend up in a hug and sharing a loving kiss with him.
“Hi Dashie! How’s it going?” he asked with a smile.
“Pretty good! So what’s up with you?” she replied.
“Princess Celestia sent me to bring you and the girls up to the palace.” Answered Soarin.
“Sounds good, shall we?” asked Steel Shod.
“Sure thing, everypony have what they need?” asked Soarin. The element bearers nodded yes, and the party departed for the royal palace, with Twilight silently hoping that Rurik hadn’t severely beaten any nobles, particularly Blueblood.
It did not take long for the element bearers and their escorts to reach the palace, where they were ushered into the banquet hall to have breakfast with the princesses and Rurik, who much to Twilight’s relief had not given anypony more than a severe verbal beat down. Once breakfast was over, everyone moved down the hall to a large conference room where Celestia ordered all the guards except for Shining, Steel Shod, and Blood Mane out of the room. As soon as the doors were closed, Celestia cast a sound proofing spell and the meeting began.
“Welcome everyone, I hope you all had a good journey to Canterlot. Now, down to business. As you all know, there was an attempt on my life a few days ago. Lord Rurik, our guest from another world, has helping us in our efforts to ferret out a conspiracy. Due to his knowledge gained from the late Count Red Brand, and his generous offer of help, I am giving any plan that Lord Rurik comes up with a shot, meaning that you will do as he says unless I say otherwise. Rurik, I will give you the floor.” Said Celestia calmly; the Nord could already tell that there were some ponies in the room who did not like the idea.
“Thank you majesty. I hope that I will be able to help resolve this issue. Now about the attempted assassination; I am assuming that her majesty has already given those of you who were not present during the attempt the details?” he asked looking around the room. Everyone that the question applied to nodded their heads up and down.
“Good, now, the individuals who orchestrated the attack are involved in some sort of secret society that wants to eliminate all three of the princesses and restore the social order of the pre- Princess Equestria. I hope to make a strategy that will work to our advantage, and help us catch a few of them, interrogate them, and find out more about these traitors so they can be brought down." Began Rurik.
“But it should be the Royal Guard’s job to plan this shouldn’t it? Why should we trust some outlander we just met a few days ago?” asked Shining aggressively.
“Because I fear that the guard maybe compromised. Aside from yourself, Blood Mane, Steel Shod, and the guards present during the attempt, I worry that whoever the conspirators are may have agents within the guard. These scum have a large pool of resources, and I fear that some of the guards may be involved in the conspiracy itself, or on the conspirators' payroll.” Answered Rurik matter of factly. Shining would have said more, were it not for Celestia shooting him a firm look that he knew meant to keep silent.
“Please save all questions and concerns until after Rurik finishes.” Stated Celestia calmly. Other hooves went down and everyone allowed Rurik to continue explaining his strategy.
“Thank you Princess; now what and when is the next big event that royalty would attend here in Equestria?” Rurik asked. Shining raised his hoof once more. “Yes Captain?”
“That would be the Royal Canterlot Charity Ball, although Princess Celestia is usually the only one who attends as per security protocols.” Answered Steel Shod.
“With the possibility of enemy agents in the rank and file guard and the officer corps; I am sure that they will know this. Tell me more about the ball.” Said Rurik.
“The ball is the same every year. Only one of the princesses are there. Before Princess Luna returned, it was only Princess Celestia or Princess Cadence.” Explained Lieutenant Blood Mane.
“In that case, I propose we give them an opportunity that they won’t be able to refuse. I believe that the best way to lure these evil bastards out is to announce that all three princesses will be at the ball.” Said Rurik thoughtfully. He could tell instantly that Shining Armor did not approve.
“But that would put their lives in danger, and having them all together would make the assassins’ goals more possible to achieve!” Growled Shining.
“This is very true, which is why I would not even suggest it if I thought we could find another option to lure them out, but from what I saw of Red Brand’s memories, this would be the only thing that would make them expose themselves.” Responded Rurik calmly.
“It’s extremely risky; but if they want their majesties dead as bad as Rurik says, then it may be the only way to draw them out and capture them.” Said Steel Shod grimly.
“I don’t like it one bit.” Stated Shining. “It puts not one, but all of the princesses in too much danger.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m with Shining on this one. Nothing against you Lord Rurik, but as a Solar Guard I am charged with the safety of Princess Celestia and cannot support a plan that puts her or any other member of the royal family in harm’s way, even if she orders me to go along with it.” Said Blood Mane politely.
“It will be a chance that we may have to take. If we do not do this then we will have their threat looming over our heads until we are eventually picked off one at a time, and then they will succeed in their goal anyway.” Stated Luna stoically.
“If it makes you feel better, I will stand by the princesses with your guards to protect them from harm.” Offered Rurik. At this Shining’s face became sour.
“And what do you know about protecting royalty?” questioned Shining rudely.
“I acted as one of my king’s bodyguards in the final battle of my country’s civil war when King Ulfric led the final assault on the then capital of Skyrim. I took my fair share of arrows and slashes that day and survived: and there wasn’t a single mark on my king. I wasn’t even a vampire back then.” Answered Rurik.
“And what about Element Bearers?!” Shining growled.
“I highly recommend that the Element Bearers be kept away from the action and not attend. The less bystanders at this thing, the better. The more ponies in that ballroom means a higher chance of a hostage situation.” Explained Rurik.
“Negative; the Element Bearers will expected to be at the ball if they are in town. It may make the targets suspicious if they are in the capital, but absent from a big charity event.” Said Steel Shod with a sigh.
“Are any of the guards present during the attack on duty?” asked Rurik.
“All of them. I also took the liberty of reviewing all of their dossiers, and they all appear to be in the clear.” Answered Blood Mane.
“Excellent, we will assign each element bearer a guard then. I just hope that you are correct in them being in the all clear. Now we just need approval for this plan to be put into action.” Stated Rurik turning to the three royals.
The Princesses looked at each other before answering.
“I am for it. Why should we hide like cowards from these gutter running scum?” asked Luna.
“I am of a mind with Aunt Luna. If we hide, we are showing them that we fear them, and I do not fear them.” Stated Cadence, drawing a look of disbelief from her husband, and admiration from Rurik. Everyone looked to Celestia; as the head princess, it was her decision that would make or break the plan.
“If there is no other way to draw these traitors out, then so be it. We are more than capable of defending ourselves if need be, and can lend our magic to capture or if need be destroy them.” Said Celestia.
“Very well then, all in favor? Asked Rurik. A chorus of ‘ayes’ echoed around the room; it was not as if there was much of a choice. The princess had made up her mind, and there was little anyone could do to persuade her otherwise. The only dissenting voices were predictably Shining Armor and Lieutenant Blood Mane. “Very well then, Princess, I turn the meeting back over to you.” He finished.
“Thank you Rurik; now I want Steel, Rurik, Blood Mane, and Shining Armor to work on security and evacuation plans as well as how we capture these traitors. Twilight, you and your friends search around the library. There is something all too familiar about this group, whoever they are, and perhaps you will find something there. All we have to go on at the moment is this, and I would like to know a bit more of what we are up against.” said Celestia, as she floated over an old amulet with her telekinesis.
“What is that?” asked Rainbow Dash.
“It was an amulet that we found on Red Brand’s body. All we know is that it is very old, no one seems to know what the inscription on it means. I feel that I have seen similar ones before, but my memory escapes me.” Explained Celestia. “Make sure you don’t reveal to anyone why you are truly in the archives. This must be kept secret, lest these traitors find out.”
“Sure thing princess! What are we looking for?” asked Twilight.
“Anything you can find about old secret societies, or even newer ones.” Answered Celestia. The six friends looked at each other and nodded.
“You can count on us!” Twilight replied as she took the amulet in her own magic.
“Good, and with that, I declare this meeting adjourned.” Finished Celestia.
The trip to the hospital revealed that Ditzy and Dinky would be cleared to go home the next day thanks to the healing magic used by the unicorn doctors. Ditzy had received the brunt of the physical damage with a few broken bones, while Dinky thankfully only had a few minor cuts and bruises that were easily healed. Bright Wand on the other hand was in full traction and as soon as he was out of the hospital, he was sure to serve jail time. Twilight had decided that Rurik should have a tour of Ponyville and the two of them spent a few hours walking the streets of Ponyville, ponies waved and greeted him as if he had lived in the town his whole life. The town reminded him a great deal of Whiterun, the first town he had come to after escaping his near execution at Helgen Keep. Helgen… a place that brought back some rather uncomfortable memories: he at first shuddered at the memory of his neck on the chopping block; the warm, wet feeling of the freshly executed man’s blood on his neck, and the merciless look in the eyes of his would- be executioner as he prepared to separate Rurik’s head from the rest of his body.
“Rurik?”
Thinking of the memory of that blood suddenly made Rurik’s mouth involuntarily water… It was warm, freshly spilled blood, the kind that makes a vampire feel suddenly hungry even after he or she has fed and should be full.
“Rurik, are you alright?”
Thankfully the more rational side of Rurik quickly took back control. He reminded himself that the very warm blood that now made him hunger had belonged to a brave young man who had fought for Skyrim’s freedom and paid the ultimate price at the hands of an Imperial headsman.
“RURIK!” shouted Twilight, making him jump a little.
“Sorry Twilight, got lost in my own mind; it happens on occasion.” He assured her.
“As long as you’re okay,” said Twilight.
"Thanks, and thank you for the tour as well. Now I at least know somewhat how to get around.” Said Rurik smiling under his mask.
“Not a problem,” replied Twilight. Before the conversation could continue, Rurik heard Twilight’s stomach growl.
“Maybe we should get you some food Twilight, we have been walking about most of the day and the last time you ate was breakfast; we could go to that bakery you showed me earlier, Sugar Cube Corner was it? My treat,” he offered.
"That would be great; thanks.” Said Twilight a little embarrassed by her noisy stomach. A few minutes of walking later the two of them were in front of what looked like a giant gingerbread house.
“Are they open?” asked Rurik noticing that there were no lights on and that there appeared to be no one in the structure.
“The sign says open.” replied Twilight with a shrug.
“Well then, in we go.” Said Rurik.
As soon as he and Twilight were through the door, Rurik’s suspicions were confirmed… nearly. Turning to his pony friend, he shrugged, “Twilight, no one is here, maybe they just forgot to take down the-”
“SURPRISE!” came the sudden shout of at least twenty voices.
Rurik reacted instantly; Windshear ringing as it was drawn from its scabbard, the razor sharp blade ready to cleave someone in half. An awkward silence filled the room as Rurik lowered the scimitar’s blade so that the point was towards the floor. The ponies looked at him in a mixture of awe, and fear, their eyes drawn more to Windshear’s blade than to the fellow wielding it.
“Well… This is rather embarrassing.” said Rurik sheepishly as he slid the sword back into its scabbard in a slow manner.

After the initial shock of the situation blew over, the party took off. A huge banner hung over the counter that read “Welcome to Ponyville/ thanks for saving Derpy and Dinky”. Rurik was thankful that Pinkie had shown discretion by not mentioning the whole ambush in the woods on her party banner. The party was a fun, relaxing, and informal event unlike the huge gatherings at the Palace of Kings. Many of the town’s denizens had showed up to thank him for dealing with the rotten Viscount who had given many of Ponyville’s residents trouble. Among those particularly thankful were Mayor Mare, all of the element bearers, and a business pony who introduced himself as Filthy Rich, whom Bright Wand had been charging “protection money”. The party lasted well into the evening until only Rurik, the element bearers and Steel Shod remained.
“So Rurik, did you enjoy the party!?” asked an enthusiastic Pinkie Pie.
“Very much so Pinkie, it has been a while since I have been to an informal party. Also, sorry again about my initial reaction.” Replied Rurik.
“It’s alright, I can’t blame you with all the craziness going on lately, but why is it that you haven’t been to a party in like, forever?” asked Pinkie.
“Well, being a member of the royal court, I am constantly busy. There is lots of paper work to do as Chief Royal Engineer, and when I am not doing that, there are constant calls for aid that I must answer. Not a week goes by when I have to either fight a dragon that happens to be terrorizing a town or I have to go wipe out a Bandit layer. I barely have time to spend with my wife and friends, let alone drop in on mom and dad every once in a while.” explained Rurik with a shrug.
“Ya mentioned you were married, what can ya tell us more about yer wife?” asked Applejack. Rurik smiled and reached into the right pocket of his shirt and produced a miniature painting, which he showed to Applejack and the other element bearers.
“This is a painting of Serana; the love of my life,” he said with smile.
“She looks so beautiful in that ensemble!” said Rarity referring to the suit of vampire royal armor that Serana used for more formal events.
“She is definitely drop dead gorgeous, but it was her personality that made me fall hopelessly in love with her.” Replied Rurik thoughtfully.
“How did you two meet Rurik darling?” asked Rarity.
Rurik recounted the same story he had told Twilight of how he met Serana to the other five element bearers.
“That was so romantic Rurik, even if it was rather violent, and she seems like a very classy lady.” Stated Rarity.
“Oh believe me, she is a classy lady alright. Just don’t make her angry. The last time I saw my wife angry was during the Dominion War; and she vented her anger by grabbing an enemy warrior in full plate armor by his leg and using him as a club on his comrades.” Said Rurik as if it were an everyday event. Rarity’s eyes looked about ready to fall out of their sockets they went so wide with shock.
“But she looks so delicate!” exclaimed Rarity.
“Well, vampirism will do wonders for you.” Replied Rurik with a shrug before he noticed Fluttershy raising her hoof. “Yes, Miss Fluttershy?” he answered as kindly as possible so he wouldn't scare the shy pegasus.
“You mentioned your mom and dad, can you tell us a bit more about them?” asked Fluttershy quietly.
“Of course Fluttershy. My mother and father rule one of the largest and oldest mercenary clans in Skyrim. My father’s name is Cnut and he is a native of Skyrim while my mother Blanche is a Breton from High Rock. They are good people and raised my brothers, sisters and I right.” Said Rurik.
“Mercenaries? “asked Twilight with some suspicion as her last experience with sell swords had not been a good one after all.
“Aye. Clan Skull-Taker has sold its blades for gold for nearly as long as we have existed. However, if the job that we are offered is one that we disagree with, then we decline it.” Explained Rurik.
“Also, how many brothers and sisters do you have exactly?” asked Twilight.
“I am the second oldest of seven children, my immediate family is a large one.” Said Rurik proudly.
“Seven!?!” exclaimed Dash.
“Aye, seven. My youngest sibling is my little brother Emeric, who just had his twelfth birthday about two weeks ago. He may have been an oops baby, but he is loved all the same!” explained Rurik with a grin.
“Oops baby?” asked Fluttershy quietly.
“Aye, Ma and Da had decided to stop having children after my sister Katariah was born. Then one night at dinner three years after that decision, ma stood up at the table and announced that we were going to have a new baby brother or sister. Then she turned around and punched dad right in the chin; he went down like a sack of potatoes too!” said Rurik with a chuckle, causing everypony to laugh.
“If you don’t mind me asking Rurik dear, how did they react when you became a vampire?” asked Rarity.
“Well, they weren’t too happy at first, but they still accepted me for who I am regardless. Our clan is quite open minded about such things.” He answered.
“What was growing up like? Did ya have lots and lots of parties?!” Asked Pinkie Pie popping out suddenly from Rurik’s coat, earning a surprised and confused look from him. The Nord decided just to roll with it, he had seen stranger things after all.
“Well, we occasionally had parties, but most of my childhood was spent in combat training and studying magicka and history. My clan prides itself on its members being scholars as well as warriors. Regardless of the large amount of work, we still managed to have fun, and mom and dad taught us everything we needed to know about how to succeed in the world.” Said Rurik with a smile.
“Speakin’ of teachin’, do ya think ah could get ya over to the farm tomorrow to start teaching me about smithing that ebony?” asked Applejack.
“Sure thing Applejack, I will be over at about midday if that works.” Answered Rurik.
“That sounds great sugar cube! Alright! I’ll see ya tomorrow then!” said Applejack before she and Steel bid him and the other element bearers’ farewell.
One by one the other element bearers went home. Rurik thanked Pinkie for the party, and even offered to pay her five hundred Septims for going to the trouble of setting it all up, an offer that the pink party mare kindly declined. After bidding Pinkie a farewell, Twilight and Rurik began heading back to the library.
“So Rurik, when are you going to Canterlot to meet with the Princesses?” asked Twilight.
“Two more days. Tomorrow I am going to show Applejack some smithing techniques and start reviewing the dossiers that Celestia is sending; they should be here tomorrow afternoon. Then I have to formulate some plans on how to lure these bastard traitors out. The main problem will be gaining information from them; I doubt that they will just tell me what I want to know.” Replied Rurik with a sigh.
Twilight visibly cringed at Rurik’s foul language as very rarely did she hear such language, save when Applejack was having trouble on the farm; and even then it was not all that bad. While she didn’t like the language, she did not want to offend him either and so changed the subject.
“So Rurik, you had said back in the cave that you weren’t an ‘Akaviri barbarian’, what did you mean by that?” asked Twilight.
“Well, in a nut shell back home in Tamriel, there was a group of people known as The Blades. They trace their routes to a land known as Akavir, a land which many years ago, tried to invade Tamriel; but the invaders were instead convinced to become part of the Empire of a man named Reman Cyrodiil. The Blades were formed from this and they became some of the greatest warriors Tamriel has ever seen. They were highly disciplined and very good at killing dragons. They also ended up serving as the bodyguards for the Emperors of Tamriel, until the Great War. After the Thalmor won the war they forced the Emperor to disband them after which Thalmor agents began hunting down and killing them.” Said Rurik. Twilight had cast her recording spell to gather as much information about what Rurik was telling her.
“That’s horrible; even if I don’t like that they were dragon slayers they didn’t deserve that!” Said Twilight with conviction.
“Oh I certainly agree with you. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, after Skyrim gained independence, they found refuge there. At the time that they were starting to come out of hiding, I was learning how to use my shouts, such as the ones you saw me use in the forest. The men who were helping me learn to harness this power are a group of monks known as the Grey Beards, men who spend their entire lives training in the ways of the voice. Initially the woman who is now their Lieutenant Grand Master, Commander Delphine, approached me about leading them into a new era. They wanted to go back to being professional dragon hunters. I accepted at first, as the Dragons were returning to Tamriel; being raised from the dead by Alduin.” Said Rurik with a slight shudder.
“Who was Alduin?” asked Twilight.
“He was the greatest threat that Skyrim, if not all of Nirn, has ever faced. Think of a massive dragon, like Odahviing but much bigger; and then give him the power to destroy an entire world and you have Alduin. He was the self-proclaimed first born of Akatosh, the chief god of the religion that I follow. Unlike Akatosh however, he was evil. He had been defeated thousands of years ago, banished by a group of courageous heroes, but unfortunately he was sent forward in time; to our time to be precise. He wanted to enslave or destroy all mortals, and to do that he began raising legions of dragons from the dead.” Explained Rurik.
“Wait, so zombie dragons?” asked Twilight raising an eyebrow, causing Rurik to laugh.
“No, nothing like that!’’ he chuckled, “Many years before Alduin’s initial defeat, humans worshipped the dragons as gods, but they were very tyrannical masters. After a while people had enough and overthrew them with the help of some sympathetic dragons who taught them how to use The Voice. While they could kill the physical bodies of the dragons, their souls were a totally different matter. You see, the soul of a Dovah cannot be so easily destroyed. Alduin was able to restore the souls of his slain underlings and restore them to life.” Said Rurik.
“But if someone who is Dragonborn like you kills one, then the dragon would be destroyed completely though right?” asked Twilight.
“Yes, that is correct, though what bothered me about Alduin was that when I finally destroyed him, he just exploded into a bright light, and faded into nothingness.” Said Rurik with a perturbed tone.
“So he could return again one day?” asked Twilight.
“Aye, and that is why I asked Serana to turn me. That way, it will not matter how many thousands of years it could take him to return, I will be there waiting for him unless the divines will my death beforehand. But I am getting off track, I am sure you want to know more about why the Blades and I don’t exactly see eye to eye?” asked Rurik.
“Yes, I would like to know. I mean you are the ultimate dragon slayer, and if they are dragon slayers I would think that they would want to work with you.” Twilight pointed out.
“Oh, one would think so; but it was not the case. You see, the master of the Greybeards, my teacher, is a Dovah by the name of Paarthunaax. He is probably the oldest dragon alive in Tamriel, and was the first dragon to teach men the way of the voice. He is also one of my closest friends: and the Blades being the self-righteous jackasses they are had the gall to ask me to kill him.” Seethed Rurik.
“Why would they do that?!” asked Twilight in shock.
“Because they felt that Paarthunaax needed to pay for crimes he committed thousands of years ago. My opinion is that he redeemed himself when he decided to teach mortals how to overthrow Alduin with the voice. You see, the difference between me and The Blades is that I kill dragons when they have committed evil against people while The Blades kill them just because they are dragons. Paarthunaax, Odahviing, and Dov like them who are willing to overcome their instincts to dominate people and help them deserve a second chance, and if they break that; then, and only then should they be dealt with in such a way.” Explained Rurik.
“So, what did you do?” inquired Twilight.
“Well...” began Rurik.

Sky Haven Temple; 7 years ago.
Rurik walked through the large double doors of the ancient Akaviri temple with a grin on his face. He had done it: Alduin was vanquished and the world was safe for the time being. Upon reaching the top of the staircase, he was greeted by an older fellow in robes who smiled at the sight of him.
“Rurik! Thank Talos you are alive!” said Esbern.
“Indeed, the World Eater is no more, and Nirn may rest a little easier for another day.” Said Rurik, relief evident in his voice.
“Thank the gods for good news! You should go and tell Delphine, she has been worried sick about you.” Said Esbern in a cheery manner.
“Of course Esbern, next round of mead is on me then!” replied Rurik.
“No, we owe you the mead Dragonborn.” Replied Esbern with a smile. Rurik simply smiled and nodded in reply before going towards the large table in the middle of the room. Delphine was speaking with the assembled Blades that Rurik had recruited before his journey to deal with Alduin. Aside from Delphine there were three familiar faces at the table. He recognized young Erik of Rorikstead whom he had bought a suit of armor for a few years ago to help get him started as a sell sword. There was also Kharjo, a Khajiit and former caravan guard who had aided him on multiple occasions. The last was Uthgerd the Unbroken of Whiterun; all of whom had jumped at the chance to become members of the Blades. At the sight of Rurik, Erik stood and raised a mug of good Nord mead.
“Hail Dragonborn!” he said.
“Hail!” the rest shouted, raising their mugs with enthusiasm. Delphine set her mug down and approached Rurik.
“Is it done? Is the World Eater vanquished?” she asked.
“Aye, Alduin is slain for the time being. I did not however, absorb his soul meaning that he could return at some point.” Replied Rurik.
“Well, I guess we will have to take what we can get. For now it will have to do and we will just have to prepare future generations to be ready for if and when he reappears. As much as I would love to celebrate your triumph over Alduin, there is a matter that needs to be attended to.” Replied Delphine, her voice becoming deadly serious.
“Oh, and what might that be?” asked Rurik with some suspicion in his voice.
“We know about Paarthunaax.” She replied.
“Yes, and what about him?” asked Rurik.
“We know that he’s a dragon, and that he was one of Alduin’s closest lieutenants. He needs to answer for his crimes: for enslaving and butchering our ancestors. He needs to die.” Hissed Delphine. Rurik felt suddenly sick to his stomach at what Delphine was suggesting: she wanted him to kill his teacher, the dragon who had become like the grandfather he had never had.
“Excuse me, but do you want to repeat that? Because I could have sworn I just heard you say that you wanted me to kill the Dovah that is like family to me.” Said Rurik dangerously.
“I didn’t stutter: he needs to die.” Replied Delphine simply.
“Unfortunately, he must pay for the crimes he committed. He killed many people during his time in Alduin’s service. Justice can be harsh, but this is necessary.” Esbern added.
“I am inclined to disagree with you two. He more than redeemed himself when he helped our ancestors learn the voice to break free of Alduin’s shackles.” Stated Rurik.
“While that may be, one good deed does not excuse years of evil.” Retorted Delphine.
“One good deed? He has done plenty to atone; and don’t think for a moment that he doesn’t live with the wrongs he committed in the past every day of his long life.” Spat Rurik.
“It still doesn’t matter. He is a dragon, and therefore he must die!” hissed Delphine. Rurik was now losing his patience.
“You know; the Greybeards were right about you. You are naught but closed minded barbarians. Without Paarthunaax, who would have taught Tiber Septim in the way of the voice? Or Reman Cyrodiil who’s face is carved on this very temple? He has more than redeemed himself!” growled Rurik.
“He is a gods damned dragon! He deserves nothing but the sharp end of a katana! Our honor as Blades dictates this!” roared Delphine.
“Your honor: not mine. What you are proposing makes you no better than the Thalmor for what they did to the Blades all those years ago! You disgust me!” Rurik shouted back.
“Now you have gone too far!” growled Delphine drawing her Katana. She swung full force, only for Rurik’s reinforced steel plate gauntlets to deflect the blade, and his foot to knock her off balance. Just as she regained her balance, his other fist slammed into her face. A loud crack and brutal pain told Delphine that her nose was broken. She was suddenly picked up and slammed against the wall behind her, causing her to drop her katana.
“If this is what your twisted sense of honor dictates, then find a new Dragonborn to try and manipulate. I never side against my family and while Paarthunaax may not be blood, he is family to me: and if you ever go near High Hrothgar or the summit of the mountain, I will kill you and any other Blade I come across. The Thalmor will be the least of your worries.” Delphine’s pupils shrank to the size of pin heads, she knew full well he was serious.
“Fine then! Leave, we don’t need you.” Spat Delphine. Rurik dropped her unceremoniously, letting her fall on her butt. He then turned on his heel and left the temple. As Delphine got back to her feet, she noticed Kharjo and Erik following Rurik towards the door.
“Where in Oblivion are you two going?!” she asked.
“If Rurik goes, we go.” Replied Kharjo matter-of-factly.
“You two swore an oath!” cried Delphine.
“You can take your oath, cram it up your arrogant arse, and rotate! We’re loyal to the Dragonborn, not to you; obviously something you forgot!” spat Erik. With that, Erik, Rurik, and Kharjo left leaving Delphine, Esbern, and Uthgerd to find a new hero to follow.

“And that is why I don’t like the Blades. Any questions?” finished Rurik.
“You’re not much of a people person are you?” asked Twilight raising an eyebrow.
“What are you talking about? According to my wife, I’m just one big ray of sunshine!” he replied throwing out his arms in a silly manner. They shared a laugh before continuing their walk back to Golden Oaks Library.
By the time that they had reached the library, the sun had gone down and was replaced by the beauty of the night sky. Once through the door, they wished each other good night and went to their rooms.
The night passed without incident, and as is the natural order of things, Night eventually gave way to day. The rays of Celestia’s sun crept slowly over the hills as Luna’s moon retreated for the coming of the day; it was a beautiful morning in Ponyville. A rooster hopped up onto the sign outside of Twilight’s house and crowed. The bird had just begun his cry when the window to Twilight’s basement swiftly opened and a boot flew out, knocking the rooster from his perch with a surprised squawk.
“Shut your beak, we get it!” groused Rurik before closing the window. The cranky vampire was anything but a morning person, but everything would be fine after his first bottle of mead. He would recover the boot later.
All around the town, ponies began to stir from their sleep to begin their day. Rurik stretched and cracked his neck, despite being undead, he still got the occasional stiffness from sleeping wrong. He then decided upon what he would wear. The fine clothes and emperor’s robes were too nice to wear for smithing, leaving only one set of clothing that he could use… his armor. He looked upon the Visage of Mzund, its emotionless eyes staring back at him vacantly. Before he could think any further about the day ahead, the door to the basement opened and Twilight let him know that breakfast was ready. Rurik headed upstairs for his meal, grabbing a bottle of Black- Briar Reserve out of his satchel on his way up. As they dug in to their breakfast, Rurik had to admit that the little dragon was one hell of a cook when it came to pancakes. However, as they sat around the table, Rurik noticed that Spike seemed to be quite distracted, as if deep in thought over something that was bothering him.
“Septim for your thoughts?” asked Rurik holding up one of the gold coins.
“Wha?” asked Spike as he realized that someone was talking to him.
“You seem a bit distracted Mal Dovah.” Said Rurik kindly.
“Wait, what did you just call me?” asked Spike with some confusion in his voice.
“I called you little dragon, you are a young drake are you not?” asked Rurik.
“Yeah, just really deep in thought is all. I’ve had a lot on my mind lately.” Replied the little dragon with a halfhearted smile. Rurik could tell that the little dragon was upset about something, but decided to let it rest for the moment.
“Really good pancakes Spike.” Rurik complimented before taking a sip of mead.
“Thanks, they are my specialty!” replied Spike with pride, as if whatever was bothering him had been instantly forgotten.
“They certainly are!” added Twilight before biting into another forkful of the tasty food.

After Breakfast, Rurik put did his morning exercises just like he had been taught in his clan’s boot camp. It was ancient clan law that every child had to learn how to fight starting at age five, regardless of the social standing of their parents. Rurik was no exception to this, he had just gone to college after finishing. After exercise, Rurik suited up, the Dwemer armor fit comfortably as it always did. It felt perhaps even more so in this new land: while the ponies of Equestria were quite a friendly bunch, the assassination attempt on the princess had shown that there were still plenty of cut throats and dirty politicians. While Skyrim had similar issues, at least he knew the faces of those cut throats and dirty politicians, but here, in an entirely new world; he was at a complete disadvantage where that was concerned. Not even the loyal Lieutenant Blood Mane was above suspicion. Once suited up, Rurik made his way towards Sweet Apple Acres. The walk was nice and peaceful, with ponies waving to him as he made his way through Ponyville.
A small market was going on in the center of town, and Rurik decided to investigate and see if there was anything of interest. As he approached, he heard an adorable little voice address him.
“Hi Mr. Rurik!” said Dinky. Rurik smiled and removed the Visage of Mzund at the sound of the little filly’s voice.
“Greetings Dinky, good to see you up and about, how’s your mum?” He replied kindly.
“She’s really good Mr. Rurik, a little sore, but the doctor says she’ll be okay. Thanks for helping us yesterday!” said Dinky.
“It was my pleasure Dinky. Not to get off topic, but shouldn’t you be in school?” asked Rurik raising an eyebrow.
“It’s summer, so school is out. I’m on my way to hang out with some of my friends. What are you up to?” asked Dinky.
“Well, at about noon I am going to be helping out Applejack. Other than that I figured that I would pass the time and browse some of the wares in the market.” Replied Rurik.
“I see, so then why are you in your armor?” asked Dinky.
“It’s the only thing I have aside from very fancy clothes.” explained Rurik.
“You should go and see Rarity! She could make you some plain old clothes so you aren’t wearing your armor all the time. It looks heavy.” Said Dinky.
“Eh, it isn’t all that heavy for me. I have been trained to wear it from a rather early age, but I see what you are saying. Maybe I’ll go over to Rarity’s and have her make me some clothes for when I don’t need this.” He responded while knocking on his chest plate. “Plus, I may make someone nervous and I really don’t want that.”
“I can show you how to get there.” Offered Dinky.
“Why not? I really haven’t gotten to know my way around town so that would be quite helpful.” Accepted Rurik with a friendly smile.
“Okay! Follow me!” she called excitedly.

Rarity measured the fabric that she was using a second and then third time. Some ponies may have called her obsessive for constantly measuring material, but she had learned long ago that not measuring enough can lead to mistakes and wasted materials as a result. Just as she was about to cut the fabric, the bell on the boutique’s front door rang, notifying her that a customer had entered the showroom.
“Coming!” she sang out setting down the tools of her trade and removing her glasses. She moved at a ladylike trot to the showroom, and upon entering uttered her favorite catchphrase. “Welcome to Carousel Boutique; where every garment is chic, unique and magnifique!” said Rarity melodiously.
“Good morning Miss Rarity.” Said Rurik with a courteous bow of his head.
“Ah, good morning Sir Rurik! What brings you to Carousel Boutique?” asked Rarity.
“I was wondering if I could commission you to make me some plain clothes so I have something to wear aside from my armor and my fancy clothes?” asked Rurik, causing Rarity gave him a puzzled look.
“Why not just forgo your clothing Rurik? After all nopony really wears clothing unless it is to a formal event or for a costume party.” She explained. Rurik smiled and shook his head, his deathly pale cheeks turning a light shade of red.
“Because where I come from, public nudity is a taboo. It is different if one visits a sauna or a hot spring, but if someone is caught walking through the streets, then the militia will not hesitate to arrest them for Indecent Exposure.” He chuckled.
“Oh, I see,” said Rarity with a blush, “in that case come on in and let me take your measurements.”
“Sounds good then, let’s to it.” Finished Rurik.

Winterhold Province, Kingdom of Skyrim.
Serana peered through the falling snow from her spot on the horse she was riding. She could just make out the towers and stone wall surrounding the city of Winterhold, and just visible through the swirling flurries was the towers of the college. The College of Winterhold ‘s importance had only increased with Ulfric’s victories over the Empire and the Dominion, as the school trained some of the kingdom’s best battle mages and spell swords, as well as regular wizards in general. The influx of people into Winterhold to join the college had made the once small hold very rich. After the death of Archmage Aren, the mages of the college had nominated Rurik to be Archmage of Winterhold, a nomination which he had turned down. The sitting Archmage was a promising mage from High Rock at the time Archmage Aren’s tragic death and a master of magicka who was arguably the era’s most powerful magician. Archmage Reynald Le Croixeux had done a wonderful job as the new head of the college and been a good friend to both Serana and Rurik. Now, more than ever, she needed his help: she needed to find out where her beloved was.
The warden at the college’s gate bowed before Serana and her guards as soon as she saw who it was and led them across the bridge. The college had received a much needed renovation once Reynald had taken charge. Of particular concern had been the hazardous bridge that connected the college to the rest of Winterhold. The bridge had suffered much damage during the great collapse almost a century ago, and had remained without guardrails ever since, until Reynald took over. When he had presented the problems to the College Board, they had complained; saying that “it will cost a fortune”. Reynald’s response had been blunt and rather harsh.
“Then conjure up a hammer and fix the damn thing.” He had growled at them. Despite the resistance he had faced from the financial board, he had been able to get the renovations he needed done. After crossing the bridge, Serana and her escorts were shown to some empty dormitories.
“The Archmage will see you tomorrow evening milady, in the meantime, make yourself at home.” Said the gate warden.
Serana thanked the warden, and unpacked her things before allowing her two guards to go to their rooms on either side of hers. After unpacking, she sat down on her bed and sighed. It had been a long few days, and normally in a situation such as this her beloved would wrap his arms around her and make her stress melt away. Serana reached into her satchel and found her miniature painting of her husband. Looking upon the picture longingly, she thought about how far they had come together, about all of their
adventures together and the hardships that they had endured over the past seven years. While she rarely admitted it, her beloved scared her to death on some occasions, and this was one of them. The last time that she had felt this scared of losing him was in fact, on Solstheim, where he had fought against Miraak. She sighed as she remembered the fear she felt as she had held Rurik’s hand while he lay unconscious upon the snow after reading the Black Book of the Daedric Prince, Hermaeus Mora. The only thing that eased her mind was that she knew that Rurik was still alive. Before drifting off to sleep, she whispered a prayer to the divines; that they would bring her beloved back to her safely.

Getting the measurements had taken only a few minutes, after which Rarity had offered him a cup of tea. While normally sticking to his beloved mead, he did not want to be rude and graciously accepted her offer. The time was spent more about Rarity asking him about the clothing worn by the people of his homeland and the fashion designs worn by the nobility: in particular High King Ulfric. After tea and conversation, Rurik made his way to Sweet Apple Acres, where he found Applejack waiting for him on the porch of her house.
“Hey there Rurik, how’s yer day going?” greeted Applejack.
“Eh, about as good as can be expected when one is a vampire who chooses to walk around in the daytime.” Shrugged Rurik.
“Ah was wonderin’ about why a vampire walked around in broad daylight ant slept at night.” Said Applejack raising an eyebrow.
“Routine. I was a human before I was a vampire and we normally sleep at night and are active during the daytime. It is one thing that has never changed for me.” He chuckled.
“Fair enough,” shrugged Applejack; “it aint easy changing something when ya been at it fer a long time.”
“Indeed, now shall we get started?” asked Rurik.
“Sure, Ah’ll lead the way.” She said happily.
Rurik followed the apple farmer to a small out building where they were met by Steel Shod. The guard officer had decided to see just how tough this miracle metal was. While it was no Skyforge, the inside of the building was a decent little smithy that was more than capable of forging ebony weapons and armor. Rurik had worked with smaller forges back in Skyrim, and this one was no different. As the door closed behind them, Applejack walked over to a table where Rurik noticed a few large knives. She picked one of them up in her teeth and brought them over to Rurik.
“Ah made these earlier today after ah got mah chores done.” She said presenting the weapon to him.
Rurik took the blade in his hand and inspected it. It was made of good solid steel, and the blade was razor sharp. It also had excellent balance to it.
“Miss Applejack, this blade is superb! Where did you learn to smith like that?” he asked genuinely impressed.
“Mah daddy taught me how. He was a smith for the Royal guards before he became a farmer. That was back when service was mandatory.” She said with a smile.
“He taught you well. However, steel is not ebony. We will need to get the forge a good deal hotter that you would with steel. As you probably already know, the trick is to heat the ore enough to liquefy it; once you have done that it can be shaped. Ebony is much tougher than steel you see, and thus requires a higher temperature to smelt.” Explained Rurik as he began working the bellows to make the smelter hotter.
“So, if it’s so easy then why don’t more people smith it?” asked Applejack.
“Because most people can’t take the heat,” chuckled Rurik, “and it’s difficult to keep at that temperature. It takes great patience to do so and many people don’t have that much of it. The metal itself is also extremely rare back home, which means that there is less of it to work with. Most smiths cannot afford the metal themselves, and only those fortunate enough to inherit an ebony mine can, and they are rare as well. Remember how I told you about how much the smiths charge for it?” He asked.
“Yeah.” She responded.
“Half of that goes into paying back the mine owners that sell them the ore and ingots.” Replied Rurik.
“That’s a lot of money.” Stated Applejack.
“Aye.” Said Rurik with a nod of his head.
“How tough is this stuff exactly? I mean the steel plate I wear is pretty darn tough.” Asked Steel Shod.
“I have seen ebony armor shrug off a steel crossbow bolt at close range without so much as getting a scratch.” Replied Rurik matter-of-factly.
“Wow.” Said Steel with an awed look on his face.
“Commander, you are going to catch insects.” Rurik chuckled.
“Sorry, it’s just… that’s amazing! Not even the Griffons have anything like that! How do you even beat someone in that armor?” inquired an excited Steel Shod.
“In my experience with ebony armor, an ebony weapon will punch through with some effort. Weapons made from dragon bones or forged in the realms of Oblivion will cleave through with little resistance however.”
“Oblivion?” asked Applejack.
“The realms of the Daedric princes. God-like beings of immense power. Some are good, most however I would categorize as neutral or pure evil. Weaponry that they forge there uses ebony, as well as… darker arts in their creation. That is a topic that I do not wish to get into at the moment; I would rather not give either of you nightmares.” Said Rurik seriously.
“Fair enough.” Agreed the two ponies.
By the way commander I have been meaning to ask. Where did you learn to fight? The other guards didn’t seem as experienced or disciplined as you did in the heat of battle last time we were fighting.” Inquired Rurik.
“I learned my skills in the Griffon Empire. The Royal Guard have decent training, but if you want to learn to really fight, the Imperial Military Academies in the Griffon Empire is the way to go.” Replied Steel Shod.
“I see, what made you go there?” asked Rurik as he continued to heat the forge.
“Remember how I told you about arresting Bright Wand?” asked Steel: Rurik shook his head yes.
“Captain-General Bergmane had me dismissed from my post. All I knew was how to be a soldier. My whole family were in the guard since its creation over 1000 years ago. So I went to academy and after I graduated I became a sell sword. I made a name for myself pretty quick and Princess Celestia eventually offered me a position in the Solar Guard.” Recounted Steel.
“Bergmane had to have been pissed!” chuckled Rurik.
“Oh he was very pissed off, but there wasn’t a thing he could do about it!” Steel chuckled back. Rurik turned his attention back to the smelter and looked satisfied with the heat coming out of it.
“That should be about good,” he said to himself. “Applejack, would you be as kind as to bring me some of the ebony ore?” he asked politely. Applejack grabbed a burlap sack in her teeth and brought the ore over to the smelter and set it down. Rurik grabbed two pieces and began melting them down to turn them into an ingot. The two chunks of ore melted before Rurik poured them from their pan into the mold that created the ingot and once the ingot was finished he allowed it to harden. Slowly, the metal cooled and when the mold was opened about ten minutes later, there was a pitch black ingot, which Rurik placed into the forge with a pair of elongated tongs. Rurik repeated this process about five times throughout the demonstration. Once the ingots were finished, he moved to the forge itself and heated them. After reaching a satisfactory amount of heat, he began hammering away at the metal.
“This is the tricky part. Ebony has to be kept constantly heated while it is being forged, because once it cools and completely hardens it becomes nigh indestructible as I mentioned. Keeping the forge at the correct temperature while shaping the ingots into weaponry or armor can be a bit challenging, but the rewards of doing so are well worth the effort.” He continued.
As Rurik continued hammering away at the ebony and keeping the forge heated, Applejack and Steel looked closely as the object began to take a familiar shape: the shape of a warhammer. After about three hours, Rurik finished his work and cooled the new weapon. After giving the new weapon a detailed inspection, he reached into his satchel and removed a rather long strip of leather, and began wrapping it around the ‘handle’ of the weapon, creating a grip. He then went over to the grindstone and sharpened it before setting it on the workbench and once more searching through his satchel.
“What are ya doing now? Aint it done?” asked Applejack.
“Aye, but I am adding some extra finishing touches.” Explained Rurik.
After some digging around in the satchel, Rurik’s hand reemerged holding a small chisel made from ebony itself and a small hammer. He then began lightly hammering away at the hammer’s shaft. While her father had been a smith, he had only taught Applejack basic smithing, and she had no idea what he was doing. Steel on the other hand knew exactly what he is doing.
“He’s engraving it.” Steel thought out loud.
“Say what now?” asked Applejack.
“Some smiths and artisans engrave the blades or other parts of their work with artistic designs or the name of either the weapon or the individual it was built for.” Explained Steel.
It took Rurik a good half hour to do the engraving on the hammer. Once he was finished he looked his work over, inspecting the letters he had carved into the shaft of the weapon. Satisfied he turned around and displayed the weapon to Applejack and Steel Shod. The ebony warhammer was a work of art: pitch black to the point of shining in the flames of the forge, it held a deadly elegance about it.
“So Steel, care to test its weight?” asked Rurik. Steel nodded, and his horn was surrounded by a glowing aura; the hammer’s handle, surrounded by the same aura, floated from Rurik’s outstretched hands. Steel brought the weapon over to get a closer look. It was heavier than the steel hammer that he was used to, but not overly heavy.
“Why don’t you read the engraving?” asked Rurik. Steel brought the weapon closer to read the inscription on the hammer. His eyes widened when he read the words: ‘Property of Commander Steel Shod.’
“If this is so valuable, then why give it to me?” asked Steel with a bewildered look on his face. Rurik smiled at the question.
“Because Commander, I found you to be worthy of it after seeing how you handled yourself in battle. You were calm, collected, and showed no fear even if you were feeling it. You did a marvelous job commander, and I respect that in a soldier. Besides, I was never much one for two handed weaponry. Give me a sword, hatchet, or mace and I am happy: but those great weapons are just too damned clunky for my taste.” answered Rurik.
“So, not ta be rude, but ya were talking about engraving?” asked Applejack.
“Ah yes. That is one thing that takes quite a bit of practice. Took me years to get that good, so the only advice on that I can offer is to practice.” Explained Rurik.
“So that’s how ya forge ebony?” asked Applejack.
“Aye, if you want I can write it down for you. It will just take me a few days.” Said Rurik.
“Probably should just ta be safe.” Replied Applejack.
“Well then, I will get on it in my free time. In the meanwhile, I think I shall take my leave. Just remember, keep practicing and you will have it down in no time.” Said Rurik.
Just as he went to leave, Rurik was startled when the door flew open to reveal Twilight. Her mane was a mess, and there were fresh tear stains on her cheeks while her eyes were red from crying.
“Twilight, what happened?!” Rurik asked in a worried manner.
“It’s Spike,” She sobbed; fresh tears rolling down from her eyes, “he and I got into a stupid argument and he stormed off. Now I can’t find him and the last time something like this happened I nearly lost him!” Rurik knelt down and pulled the sobbing purple unicorn into a hug.
“There, there now: just calm yourself Twilight. We will find him and he will be fine. Now, where are some of the places he goes when he is normally upset?” asked Rurik.
Twilight named several places that she knew of, including Carousel Boutique, Ponyville Lake, and the one Rurik was hoping not to hear, the Everfree Forest. Rurik weighed his options, as the sun was slowly setting.
“Twilight, do you have anything of his?” He asked.
“What do you mean?” sniffled Twilight.
“A possession such as a toy, or maybe a tooth, scale or a claw?” he inquired.
“I have the first tooth he lost and a few scales he gave me. Why?” she asked.
“Because now we have a way to find him.” Grinned Rurik.
