What it means
Rainbow Dash, is a Pegasus mare who always seemed to defy the laws of physics. Easily recognizable by her Rainbow mane, or more often, a streak of Rainbow flying across the sky. Rainbow Dash was a very gifted, very athletic pony. She always seemed to love competition, whether it be friendly or otherwise, but most of all. She had a dream. That one day she would be among Equestria's elite flying squad. The Wonderbolts. Through her boundless determination, she realized that dream, and was able to put on the Blue and Gold, and call herself an elite flier. As if she didn't already.
However, when she joined the Wonderbolts, something had changed. She was always late for practice, opting to sleep on clouds instead. When she was there, she seemed to be slacking off a bit. Don't think this went unnoticed by her teammates, especially Rainbow Dash's idol. One of Equestria's most talented ponies, Wonderbolt Captain Spitfire. Spitfire was truly a great mare, a great motivator, and even a better leader. She was kind and patient, yet at the same time, she pushed her team to their limits, and beyond. This time though, Rainbow Dash had tested Spitfire's patience for long enough. Being Captain, Spitfire had taken it upon herself to try and curb Rainbow Dash's behavior, so she had set up a meeting between her, and the Rainbow-maned Rainbow Dash.
"You wanted to see me about something, Spitfire?" Rainbow asked, walking into Spitfire's office.
"Yes Rainbow, I do," Spitfire said, "It's about your current behavior ever since joining the team,"
"What about it?" Dash asked.
"Well, for starters, you are constantly late, and you slack off like there's no tomorrow. So tell me Dash, what gives?" Spitfire asked? Clearly tired of Rainbow Dash's antics.
"Well I'm a Wonderbolt now, I've made it. I'm one of the best, I don't really see a reason to try as hard as I did before," Rainbow said.
You could practically see the pure, uncensored anger pouring out of Spitfire.
"WHAT! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?" Spitfire yelled.
"S-sorry," Rainbow mumbled, shocked at her teachers loss of composure.
"Sorry doesn't cut it anymore Dash," Spitfire continued, "Do you even know what it means to be a Wonderbolt?"
"I-I uh...." Rainbow Dash stammered, failing to find the correct words.
"Well, until you do figure out what it means to put on that uniform and perform in front of thousands of fans every week, I am hereby suspending you from the Wonderbolts. You need to learn humility, Rainbow Dash," Spitfire said.
"Suspended? You can't suspend me, this is the only thing I've ever wanted to do! This was my dream since I was a filly! You can't kick me off, ya just can't!" Rainbow pleaded with Spitfire.
"Well first off, suspended doesn't mean kicked off, Rainbow," Spitfire said with a sigh. "It means that you can't be back here until I say you can," Spitfire said.
"Oh..." Rainbow dejectedly said.
"Now, pack up your things and go, and only come back, when you've figured out what it means to be a Wonderbolt, got it?" Spitfire asked.
"Yes ma'am." Rainbow said as she left Spitfire's office.
Spitfire, truly, truly did not want to do what she had just did. Rainbow Dash reminded her of herself when she herself was younger. Headstrong, confident, and gifted. The difference was that Spitfire knew what it meant to become a Wonderbolt, Rainbow, well, did not, but Spitfire had no doubts that Rainbow Dash would figure out what it meant to be a Wonderbolt, and when she did, she would become the greatest Wonderbolt ever.
Rainbow Dash, on the other hand, did not like what just happened. Not one bit. She was sad, she felt rejected, she felt like crying, but no. She was too prideful for self-pity. After packing her backs and making a quick and hasty exit, she went to the one friend who she thinks can help her the most.
"Twilight! Twilight! Twilight!" Rainbow Dash said, barbarically knocking on the door of the home of Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight Sparkle was one of Rainbow's best friends, one could say Twilight could be Rainbow's closest friend, not to mention both of them help make up the 6 Elements of Harmony. So there's that dynamic to their friendship.
"What! What! What!" Twilight said angrily. "Oh, it's you Rainbow Dash, why were you knocking on the door like that?"
"It's because I need your help Twilight!" Rainbow exclaimed, obviously in a rush.
"What do you need?"
"A book on what it means to be a Wonderbolt. Spitfire suspended me from the Wonderbolts, and said I couldn't come back until I knew what it meant to be one!" Rainbow exclaimed.
Twilight gave a huge sigh to this.
"Rainbow," Twilight said, "You can't just look up what it means to be a Wonderbolt, everyone has their own way of defining what it means to be a Wonderbolt."
"Then can I borrow yours?" Rainbow asked.
"What? No," Twilight answered. "You need to figure it out on your own, you need to sit down somewhere, and calmly ask yourself, What does it mean to be a Wonderbolt? It may take you a few minutes, or a few weeks, but trust me when I tell you Rainbow Dash, you'll know the meaning when you see it." And with that, Twilight closed the door, leaving Rainbow to her thoughts.
"What does it mean?" Rainbow said quitely to herself. She knew that she didn't know the answer she was looking for, and she also didn't know where she was going to find it, but as Celestia as her witness. She was going to find it. Deciding that seeking more help from her friends would be a good route to take, also, grabbing a bite to eat wouldn't hurt either, so she set her sights on Sweet Apple Acres, and her friend, Applejack.
