Chapter 1: Things change...
Chapter 1: Things change...
“BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!”
The jarring sound of my alarm clock stirred me from my slumber. I turned over and pressed the snooze button, silencing the shrieking device. I sluggishly sat up in my bed and rubbed the sleepiness from my eyes. As my vision became much clearer, I looked at the time displayed in dark red numbers on the front of my clock. The time was 8:45 am.
I tugged on the string connected to the closed blinds and my bedroom was instantly flooded with light. Yep, it was a bright Sunday morning in Cloudsdale. Observing the outside from my big, round window, I could confirm that the town was as busy as ever. There were vendors selling some mouthwatering baked goods in the square, there were stands where Pegasi could choose reading material from a wide assortment of informative newspapers and fascinating magazines, and of course, the weather factory off in the distance was bursting with activity as usual, preparing conditions for the town of Ponyville located directly below Cloudsdale.
I leaped off of my bed and looked at myself in the large mirror which was positioned right next to my closet. I was really excited and the cause was simple: Today was my birthday! I would be turning five years old. I smiled and left my bedroom, then ambled down the long, carpeted hall to the washroom. I pulled the white door open and went inside. I was an underdeveloped colt, far too small to reach the sink. So, my Dad had built a nice, miniature flight of stairs for me.
I climbed up the wooden steps very carefully. I definitely didn’t want to have a nasty fall on my birthday. Once I finally reached the top step, I grabbed my tooth brush and my tooth paste. I gently squeezed a pea-sized amount of tooth paste onto the white bristles of my tooth brush, and then I put the tooth brush in my mouth and brushed my teeth vigorously for a little over 90 seconds.
My wonderful Mom was a dentist. So, she would always be stressing the importance of having good oral hygiene. I had never gotten a cavity in my entire life, and my Mom was very proud of me for that. After I finished brushing my teeth, I took the small, orange cup that was sitting on the counter of the sink, filled it about half-way with water, and then used the liquid to rinse my mouth out.
I spat in the sink and then looked up at my reflection in the mirror which covered the medicine cabinet. I grinned widely in the mirror and my pearly-white teeth sparkled slightly as the bright light above the mirror bounced off of them. I climbed down the steps, once again being cautious so I wouldn’t fall. Once I reached the black and white tile floor, I opened the door, exited the washroom, and then quickly trotted down the hall and bounded down the stairs to the lower level of the house. I nearly fell over when I made it to the bottom due to the intense speed at which I ran down the stairs, but I managed to catch myself. Luck just seemed to be on my side today.
I made my way into the living room where I found my Dad sitting on the couch, smoking his pipe, and reading the daily newspaper. I walked over, climbed onto the couch and sat next to him. Dad dropped his gaze from the paper to find me at his side. He beamed down at me and tussled my mane playfully. “Good morning, Son,” he said. “Happy birthday!”
“Thanks, Daddy.” I smiled and hugged him tightly. “Where is Mommy?” I asked. My dad pointed towards the kitchen.
“She’s making a special birthday breakfast for you.” He informed me. Almost as if on cue, my mom poked her head out of the kitchen.
“Breakfast is ready!” She called.
I trotted into the kitchen with haste and clambered onto my chair at the table. Remember how I was too small to reach the sink in the washroom? Well, as it turns out, I was also too small to reach the kitchen table. My parents put phone books on the seat to help me reach. My mom came over and grinned at me. “There’s my birthday boy!” she exclaimed happily before kissing my cheek and setting a scrumptious looking plate of chocolate chip pancakes down in front of me. There was a message written on the surface of the pancakes in syrup. It said “Happy birthday, Star.”
I smiled at this; it was a bit corny, but still a sweet gesture none-the-less. “Thanks, Mommy” I said.
“You’re welcome, Son.” she replied. “Now eat up! You’ve got a big day ahead of you!” she said as she passed by me, walking into the living room. I picked up the fork and knife Mom had placed next to my plate and began eating my breakfast.
The pancakes were delightful. Mom had clearly put a lot of effort into making them. It wasn’t every day that I got to eat yummy chocolate chip pancakes like this. No, they were strictly for special occasions, like my birthday.
Once I finished the delicious pancakes, I got off of my chair, grabbed the plate I had eaten off of, and put it in the sink. I then strolled into the living room and climbed onto the couch once again, sitting between my loving mom and dad and watching a program being shown on the TV with them. We were such a happy family and we treasured each other very much.
After about an hour of this, somepony knocked on the front door. Mom got up and answered it and then called out to me “Star, it’s your little friends!”
I jumped off of the couch and ran to the door and sure enough, my two friends, Ender Eyes and Light Beam were waiting for me. Ender Eyes was a dark grey colt with purple eyes and a purple mane and tail he was a bit bigger than me, but I didn’t mind. He was really nice and just an all-around cool guy.
Light Beam was about the same size as I was. He had a brown coat, light green eyes, and a dark green mane and tail.
Mom smiled as I walked outside. “You all have fun.” She said. She pulled me aside. “Star, I want you home by 8:00. Understand?” I nodded. “Good!” Ender Eyes, Light Beam, and I walked down the street and into the hustle and bustle of the town.
“Happy birthday, dude.” Ender said. I smiled at him.
“Thanks!” I responded.
“What do you guys think we should do today?” Light Beam questioned. I thought about it for a minute. Before I could come to a conclusion, Ender chimed in with a suggestion.
“We could go to the park!” he said. I liked that idea.
“That could be fun.” I said. “What do you think, Light?”
Light Beam nodded in agreement. “Let’s go to the park!”
The three of us quickly made haste to Cloudsdale’s park. It had just opened a little over a year ago and it was totally awesome! There were swing-sets, slides, monkey bars! You name it, this park had it. There was also a spacious field full of soft, puffy clouds. I’m not completely sure what that was used for. Maybe games like tag or ultimate Frisbee. They required a lot of space to play.
My favorite thing in the park was the swings. I wasn’t a very good flyer yet, but sometimes I would swing very high and then jump off and soar through the air a little. I loved that awesome feeling of adrenaline. It made me feel so unrestricted; so alive!
We played at the park for hours until the sky began to get dusky. “I gotta go home, you guys.” I told my two friends. We exchanged goodbyes and then went our separate ways. I ran home as swiftly as I could. The sun was going down and I knew how much my Mom hated it when I was out after dark. I couldn’t blame her though…. She just wanted to protect me.
I finally reached my house and as I walked closer to it, I noticed something that I thought was quite odd… It made me feel uneasy… The front door was hanging wide open. Upon closer inspection, I observed that the door’s deadbolt lock had been broken off. This creeped me out a little, but I ignored that feeling and proceeded to walk into the house.
As my quiet hoof-steps padded on the wooden floor of the lower level of the house, something felt terribly off… My Mom and Dad were usually waiting for me in the living room whenever I got home from playing with my friends. However, when I went into the living room to check, they weren’t there. “Mommy…? Daddy…? Are you here?” I called out. The only response I got was icy, unsettling silence.
I walked up the stairs and called their names repeatedly, feeling more and more frightened. “If this is supposed to be some kind of joke, it isn’t funny!” I shouted. I waited for several minutes… Maybe they were just kidding around…
No response…
I ran into my parents’ bedroom and looked around.
Not there…
I trotted into my room and looked around.
Not there…
I ran back downstairs with great speed and then I ran down another flight of stairs that led to the basement.
My parents weren’t there either…
I collapsed to the gnd started pounding the floor with my front hooves. I was completely panicked and freaking out. “WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?!?” I screamed. Dead silence… This couldn’t be happening… Mom and Dad were going come out and surprise me any minute… Everything was going to be just fine…
That wasn’t true… that wasn’t true at all… My parents had disappeared… vanished… I was all alone… Things were never going to be the same again….
I climbed back up the stairs and looked at my shadowy surroundings... This house had so many wonderful memories and now they had all come crashing down around me. I had it so good… I really did.
I walked outside of the house and gazed up at the starry sky… It was so beautiful… and yet… something about it made me feel so lonely…
I plopped myself down onto a puffy cloud, feeling defeated. All I could think about was my parents… and how much I loved them… Tears filled my eyes. What was I going to do…? Where was I going to live…? I couldn’t pay for the house because I had no bits or anything… I was incomplete and all alone…
I covered my face with my hooves and let hot tears flow down my cheeks as I wept sorrowfully. I had it made… but all of that had changed…
As I continued to cry, I felt somepony sit down on the cloud beside me. “Hey. Are you alright?” She asked in a soft voice that cracked slightly. I took my hooves away from my face and looked at the filly who was currently sitting beside me. She had a blue coat, rose-colored eyes, and a mane with all the colors of the rainbow. I shook my head miserably.
“No… I’m not alright… My Mommy and Daddy are gone…. I looked everywhere for them… But they seem to have disappeared…” I said.
“Aww… that is not cool.” she said matter-of-factly. I nodded in agreement and frowned, looking downward at the ground glumly. She gently put a comforting hoof on my shoulder, which made me turn my gaze back to her. “My name’s Rainbow Dash. What’s yours?”
“Star Spinner…” I responded.
“Star Spinner, eh?” she said with a small smile. “That’s a pretty cool name.”
I felt blood rush to my cheeks instinctively at her compliment. “Thanks…” I said.
Rainbow suddenly got really quiet and just sat there with me, looking at the sparkling sky for several minutes before she looked at me again. “So… Where are you going to live now that your parents are gone?” she asked with a hint of concern in her voice. I shrugged my shoulders.
“I’m not sure… maybe I can find a way to keep warm and live outside…” I said. Rainbow Dash’s eyes widened in astonishment.
“But… you can’t just stay outside!” she pointed out. “You’ll freeze to death!”
I sighed sadly. She was right. “What other option do I have…?” I asked.
She gave me a troubled look and chewed on her bottom lip for a moment, probably trying to figure out what she could do. After several minutes her eyes lit up as an idea came to her. “If it would be cool with you, you can come and stay with my family.” she said, smiling a bit. I was floored. This was probably one of the last things that would have crossed my mind if I was in her position.
“R-Really…?” I asked, awestruck.
She put her arm around my shoulders and grinned. “Sure!” she said. “You really need a place to live now and I don’t think it would be right to just leave you alone to fend for yourself.
Tears of joy filled my eyes and I hugged her tightly. “You’re the best Rainbow!” I said.
She smirked a bit. “Yeah, I know. No need to get all sappy on me, Star.” she said, chuckling slightly. I stopped hugging her and looked over at my soon to be former house.
“Rainbow… I need to do one last thing.” I told her. She shrugged.
“Alright Star. Just don’t take too long.”
“I won’t…”
I hopped off of the cloud and went inside of the house. I was really gonna miss this place… I made my way up the stairs and went into my parents’ bedroom, coming to a stop in front of their dresser.
There was a nice, framed picture of the three of us on top of it. I ran my hoof across the picture’s surface slowly and felt tears come to my big, brown eyes. “Don’t worry, Mommy and Daddy…” I said. “Someday, I’ll find out what happened to you… I promise…” Tears dripped from my eyes onto the carpeted floor as I took a moment to remember all the good times I had had with my parents…
I walked down the stairs and out the front door, not looking back, for I had already seen enough. I went back to the cloud and stood on it next to Rainbow. Her wings were already spread, as she was feeling eager to go home. “Ready?” Rainbow asked. I nodded. She smiled at me and took off. I followed close behind her.
After some time, her house came into view. It was much bigger than my old house. It was painted a sapphire blue and it had round windows. The front lawn was spacious, full of puffy clouds, just like the majority of other Cloudsdale homes. We gently landed on the lawn and she looked at me. My legs were shaking a bit. And she could tell that something was troubling me.
Rainbow strode over and nudged my shoulder softly. “Hey, what’s bugging you?” she asked in a rather blunt manner. My voice trembled when I spoke.
“W-Well… I was just thinking… W-What if your parents don’t like me…?” I timidly questioned. Rainbow smiled a bit.
“Oh come on, Star!” she exclaimed. “I’m sure they’ll like you! You seem pretty awesome to me. Why would they think any different?”
I exhaled a bit, she was right. Worrying about that was pretty silly. She would explain my plight and her parents would surely understand. “T-Thanks, Rainbow… That makes me feel a lot better.” I said appreciatively.
“Don’t mention it dude.” She beamed before opening the front door to her house and walking inside. Rainbow looked back at me and motioned for me to follow her. I complied and came into the house as well. She then called out for her parents.
“Mom, Dad I’m home!”
Her Dad walked into the room, he was tall, grey, and looked a bit muscular. He also had a rainbow colored mane which matched his daughter’s. He smiled warmly at her. “Hello, Sweetie,” he said in his deep, rich voice. His gaze then fell upon me. His tone changed slightly. “Who’s this?” He asked.
My legs started shaking again; his change in tone alarmed me. Rainbow must have noticed this, because she put a friendly arm around me. The trembling in my legs ceased. Something about this filly really helped me relax. I couldn’t quite put my hoof on it though. “His name is Star Spinner,” She said. “I found him sitting on a cloud and crying because his parents have disappeared. I thought it would be pretty heartless to leave him all by himself, so I brought him here. He can stay, right?”
Her Dad’s brow furrowed and he looked at me apologetically. “Oh dear… I’m so sorry, kid… of course you can stay here.” He said softly.
I was so grateful; most ponies would probably just send me to an orphanage or something like that. But, this stallion was so kind… He was willing to take me in. “T-Thank you, sir…” I said.
I heard hoof-steps come trotting into the room. It was Rainbow’s mom. She must have heard the conversation because she said “It’s no trouble at all. It breaks my heart to hear about young foals losing their parents.” She looked at the clock. “Oh my! It’s getting really late. You two need to get some rest. Tomorrow is your first day of flight school!” As if on cue, Rainbow’s dad picked me and Rainbow up and carried us upstairs.
He looked down at me “You’ve had a rough day haven’t you, little one?” he asked. I nodded. He carried us into Rainbow’s bedroom and laid us down on her bed gently. He then pulled the warm sheet over Rainbow and I, kissed her forehead and walked to the doorway of her room. “Good night.” he said, turning off the light and then making his way down the hall.
Tears welded in my eyes and I started to sob quietly. All I could think about was my parents. “Where were my Mommy and Daddy…? What had become of them…?” My thoughts were interrupted by Rainbow as she hugged me tightly and gently rubbed my back.
“Star, it’s all gonna be ok,” she said.
I looked into her eyes. “You don’t know that…” I said gloomily.
She smiled knowingly and patted my back. “Yes I do. These things tend to work themselves out. They just take time”
And with that, she turned over and fell asleep. I listened to her soft breathing for a while, until I finally managed to fall asleep next to my new friend.

Chapter 2: First Day Of Flight School
I slept okay that night, but only because Rainbow was there to comfort me.. The next morning, I woke up feeling groggy, hoping that the previous day had all just been a very vivid bad dream… hoping that my parents were still around… Sadly, this wasn’t the case. I opened my eyes slowly and found myself in a strange bedroom. Nothing at all like the one I had gotten so accustomed to over the five happy years that I lived with my parents. No, this large bedroom with light blue walls belonged to Rainbow Dash. I rubbed my eyes a bit, but the troubling scene around me did not change.
I looked over at her and discovered that she was still sleeping soundly. This is when my current situation hit me at full, painful force… It hadn't just been a dream... It was all real… My parents were GONE… and I would probably NEVER see them again… I sat up in the bed slowly, covered my face with my front hooves, and sobbed as quietly as I could manage, trying my best not to wake up my sleeping friend. But alas, that was to no avail.
She must have heard me and woken up because I felt her arms wrap me in a tight hug. “Star… it’ll be okay…” she said softly. I cried on her shoulder and she rubbed my back soothingly until I calmed down and stopped crying. She then wiped away the tears that now blurred my vision. Now I know some of you might think I was a total crybaby back then… but COME ON! I had just lost my parents less than 24 hours ago! I was a scared little colt with no idea what my future held.
Anyway, after Rainbow Dash had calmed my tears, we went downstairs to have breakfast. I sat next to her at the table and we feasted on some yummy strawberry muffins. After we finished our delicious muffin breakfast, her parents gave us our book bags. I was surprised that they had a spare but I was very thankful, none the less. Rainbow’s book bag was bright green and mine was dark blue.
I was pretty frightened to go to flight school due to my lack of a cutie mark, but I hid this fear from Rainbow and her parents. Dash and I headed for the front door and her parents called after us “Have a good day at school, you two!” she grinned at them and I flashed them a fake smile as well. If there was one thing that I had a distaste for, it was most other foals. They were mean and ruthlessly teased blank flanks. Plus, I was also a weak flier. So I dreaded what was to come.
We flew to our flight school and once we landed in the wide field of large puffy clouds directly in front of the school, I couldn't help but notice that most of the other ponies had their cutie marks already and many were already pretty decent at flying. My parents hadn’t planned to enroll me at the flight school until I was 6 years old. They wanted to give me a bit of an edge. But now they were gone, so I guess their plans for me didn’t really matter too much at this point. I walked very close behind Rainbow, trying to keep from being noticed, but my efforts were pointless..
Two colts saw me and immediately started berating me. “Hey! Look everypony,” one of them shouted loud enough for all the other foals to hear “That pony doesn’t have his cutie mark yet!” My face burned with deep embarrassment as loud chants of “Blank flank” invaded my ears. I put my head down shamefully and kept walking. This was worse than I had imagined. As I tried to ignore the harsh words being shouted at me by the other foals, some of the bullies just came closer, chanting louder.
One of the two colts who first noticed me flew at my side quickly and pushed me down; hard. As I laid on the ground, trying to hold back the tears that were beginning to weld in my chocolate colored eyes, the other colt, the one who drew attention to me in the first place, ran up and kicked me really hard in the stomach. He kicked me so hard that a loud crack was heard. “Blank flanks aren’t welcome here!” he yelled. I covered my face and sobbed in terrible pain. Rainbow Dash had heard enough. She aggressively grabbed one of the bullies by his shoulders and slammed him into a wall with incredible force. She looked absolutely furious.
“Listen to me, you worthless, good for nothing punk!” she growled at him menacingly. “If you EVER touch him again,” she gestured to me “There will be some VERY painful consequences! He’s gone through enough recently! He’s just lost his parents and the last thing that he needs is cruel JERKS like you guys picking on him!” She glared at him for a few seconds, then let this bullies’ shoulders go as he slumped to the ground against the wall. She walked over to the other bully, the one who kicked me in the stomach, reared back, and punched him right in the snout, causing him to fall to the ground in pain. If I remember correctly, a small trickle of crimson liquid was dripping from his snout after that brutal strike. Rainbow Dash then ran over to me, helped me up carefully, and hugged me tightly. “You okay, Star…?” she asked me, sounding rather worried.
“My stomach is hurting really bad now... and It's a little hard to breathe” I told her in a soft, pained voice.
“Come on, we’ll let the nurse take a look at you.” she said as she pushed the grey door to the school open and helped me slowly walk inside.
Right before the door to the school closed behind us, I’m almost certain that I heard somepony yell out “Orphan blank flank!” in a loud, obnoxious voice. I still can’t believe just how cruel foals can be. Even after all these years, it completely boggles my mind. Some of them couldn’t care less about what you’ve been through. They couldn’t care less if you had just lost your loving parents, like I did. All they cared about was being mean and making your life as miserable as they possibly could.
“I hate those guys” Rainbow said in a disgusted tone as we walked through the halls. “They’re so cruel to ponies that are timid or can’t stand up for themselves for some reason.” She glanced over at me. “Ponies like Fluttershy… Ponies like you….”
“Are you saying that I’m weak…?” I asked Rainbow in an upset tone. Rainbow Dash shook her head quickly.
“No, not at all,” she assured me. “You’re actually very strong… emotionally wise, that is.” she said in a soft voice.
“What do you mean?” I questioned. Rainbow looked at me; she seemed to have a small glint of admiration in her eyes.
“What I mean…” she said “Is that you’re handling this situation quite well.”
“I am?” I asked, surprised. “But I’ve been such a timid, scared crybaby.”
She shook her head. “No Star… this reaction is pretty normal... Think about it, you’ve just lost your parents and instead of bottling up your emotions and hiding how you feel, you’re being open about it… If I was going through a similar situation, I would more than likely hide it from everypony else. I’d be afraid if I cried and stuff like you have, I would be perceived as weak... But you don’t seem to be afraid of that…” She smiled at me softly and we reached the nurse’s office.

Trying to add some more details :P
Chapter 3: The Nurse's Office
Rainbow opened the wide metal door to the nurse’s office for me and I slowly walked inside and sat down on the cold table that was covered with a long thin white sheet of material which felt like paper, where the nurse would examine foals that were injured due to flying mishaps or in my unfortunate case, physical altercations… The nurse walked in with her stethoscope and put the silver colored chest piece against my chest where my heart is, and then listened to its beating. The metal piece felt very cold, like ice, and sent a shiver down my spine.
“Your heart beat is normal,” the nurse said. She then took out a small, white thermometer with a metallic-looking tip. “Now, open your mouth and hold this under your tongue.” she told me. I opened my mouth and she inserted the thermometer. The silver tip had a slightly bitter taste that made me grimace a little bit, but I ignored it and held the thermometer under my tongue like she told me until it beeped, signifying that it had recorded my current body temperature. The nurse gently took the device out of my mouth and looked at the reading. “98.6 degrees,” she said matter-of-factly. “That’s normal” She smiled a bit.
“So, what seems to be the problem, young one?” she asked in a kind, sugary sweet voice.
“Well… I got kicked really hard in the stomach… and now it’s sort of hard and it hurts to breathe” I said.
“Oh dear!” the nurse exclaimed “If you’re having trouble breathing, I’m going to need to take an X-Ray.” She helped me off of the table and led me into a small room in the back of her office that was nearly pitch-black. I could just make out the shadowy silhouette of a large screen in the middle of the room. The nurse had me stand on a spot marked with a strip of glow-in-the- dark duct tape several feet away from the screen, and then she went over to a table which had equipment used to take the X-ray resting on top of it. She pressed a button on the table and harsh sounds of machinery filled my ears. I saw several bright flashes as well which filled the room with light for several seconds before it quickly disappeared, casting the room into darkness once more.
The nurse then brought me back into the main part of her office and had me sit down on the examination table again. “Just sit right there while your X-rays develop.” she said. I looked at the window in the door of her office and noticed Rainbow looking in at me. Her eyes were filled with concern. I waved at her and smiled sheepishly, and she waved back. “She’s such a great friend” I thought to myself. “Always has my back”.
I heard the quiet hoof-steps of the nurse walking back into the office. She had my X-Rays. I swallowed uncomfortably. I was kicked extremely hard and the pain was excruciating. What if it had busted my stomach open… or something equally gruesome…? I shuddered at these ghastly thoughts. “Well… it’s not too bad” she said. I sighed in relief. “Nothing is broken… However, two of your ribs are cracked.” She frowned a bit. “The best I can do is give you some pain medication and wait for your ribs to heal themselves.” The nurse trotted over to her wooden medicine cabinet and opened it.
I watched her as she rummaged around inside it for a few minutes. After she apparently found what she was looking for, she pulled out a small, orange bottle full of grey, oval-shaped pills. She brought them over to me, unscrewed the top and took two of the pills out. “What are these?” I asked curiously.
“They’re pills that will help ease the pain until your ribs are back to normal.” she said. She walked over to the sink, got a cup from the stack sitting beside it, held it under the faucet and turned it on by twisting a knob. A stream of water flowed down into the cup until it was filled and the nurse twisted the knob, making the water stop. She then came back over to me and handed me the cup of water and the two pills. “Take these pills and then drink the entire cup of water” she calmly instructed. I swallowed the first pill, it felt odd as it slid down my throat but I shrugged that feeling off and then swallowed the second pill as well. Afterwards, I drank all of the cool liquid in the cup. I then handed the cup to the nurse. She nodded in approval of my obedience, trotted over to the small, green trashcan in the corner of her office, and then threw the cup inside it.
She smiled warmly at me. “You did a very good job” she praised as she handed me the pill bottle. “Now, I want you to take two of these every day. Okay?” I nodded. “Good!” she said happily. She then walked over to her desk and pulled a light blue lollipop out of a small, neon green bucket. She came back to me and handed me the lollipop. “There you go! If you have any more problems, don’t hesitate to come and see me”.
I smiled and thanked her, then walked out of the office into the wide, spacious hall. Rainbow Dash was waiting for me. “So? How did it go?” she asked, sounding a bit concerned.
“Two of my ribs are cracked.” I told her. “But the nurse gave me some medicine so that it won’t hurt too much while they heal.”
Rainbow smiled “That’s great news. I’m so glad you’re okay.” she said before hugging me tightly. “I was so worried about you” she said quietly.
“Yeah… I was too…” I said in agreement.
The bell rang shrilly, signifying that it was time for us to hurry up and get to class. I exchanged a determined look with Rainbow Dash, and then we quickly made our way to our classroom.
