Futile walked along the familiar streets of Canterlot, heading toward the palace as he sighed with resignation. To be honest, he would have liked to just crash in his flat and sleep, but he knew that if he had, he would have just been woken up minuets latter by Princess Luna’s royal guards.

He had already stopped by to change into his royal garb; after all it wouldn’t do well for a stallion in his position to be seen in such…common attire. He growled at that, sometimes he hated that he was noble born, he never felt like a noble, and had never gotten along with the other “nobles” for as long as he had to associate with them.

He reached the steps of the palace, getting greeted by some of Luna’s personal guard, having sent a letter ahead to announce his arrival. “Lord Futile, it is good to see you back in the city. If you will follow us, the princess is awaiting you in her study.”

Futile nodded, following them through the palace and to the doors of the Princess’s room, walking inside and then heading into her study, watching the princess get up and then receiving a hug from her. “It has been a long time my dear student, I trust you have been taking good care of yourself.”

He nodded, “I have teacher, though as of late I have been rather down, I am afraid my search has still not borne fruit, though hopefully this will be the last time I search.”

“So you are still looking for her…even though it is very likely that she does not exist.”

“Teacher, you have seen my dreams, you know from what you saw they are not normal.”

Luna nodded, for she had seen his dreams, and they were indeed beyond her normal magic, there was something about them that seemed…forced, like somepony had cast a spell that would make him dream these dreams. Plus there was something…frighteningly familiar to her, like she should know it better than she did, but she didn’t know how.

“I honestly came by not to talk about that, I just wanted to get this visit out of the way before going home to sleep, then I’ll pick up my search in the morning.”

Luna looked surprised as he got up, getting up and placing a hoof on his shoulder to stop him. “Futile it’s been ages since I have seen you…does my presence really trouble you that much?”

Futile sighed, “It does not my teacher, I just can’t waste another moment on this search…especially seeing as how this will be the last time I search for her. If I fail to find her this time…I will be moving back to Ponyville to…to stay with Twilight, I owe her that much at least.”

Luna watched him go, surprised by his words but letting him go, going back to her desk and pulling out a sheet of paper, writing a letter to his mother. “I just hope she can talk some sense into him…”

Kira and Braeburn left the train, Kira nursing a new wound on her neck from last night, for she had had a pretty intimate dream during the train ride. Braeburn had of course been concerned, but she had told him it was normal, which he was still grumbling about. “Taint natural, waking up with scars like that, hell I saw then appear on yah, it’s bucking creepy.”

“I know that Brea, but for me this is natural, and while I am touched by your concern, there is no need to worry.”

He kept grumbling, and she shook her head. “Well while you’re mumbling to yourself, could you possibly point me to the place known as Golden Oaks Library, I am afraid I have never been to Ponyville before.”

He nodded, leading her through the town and then pointing to the tree in the center of town, “Golden Oaks is right there, now Ah am afraid Ah am going to have tah leave yah here for now, Ah got to go see mah cousin’s and offer a hoof around the farm, you promise to let me know before you leave yah hear?”

Kira nodded, and then made her way to Golden Oaks, knocking on the door when she reached it and then waiting patiently till the door opened, a small dragon standing in the door way, looking up at her in surprise. “Whoa, what are you?”

Kira chuckled, used to this kind of reaction before bending down and smiling at him. “Well little one, I am what’s called a Kirin; basically I am half dragon half pony.”

“Oh wow, so dragons and ponies can interbreed, that's so awesome.”

Kira giggled, and then grimaced as she felt her foals kicking again, gaining a concerned look from the dragon. “Hey, are you ok?”

She nodded, “I am fine little one, but I do ask if I can come in, and if you can get the pony who lives in this fine house, I need to speak with them about something.”

The dragon nodded, and then helped her inside, taking her over to the couch and letting her stretch out on top of it. “I’ll go get Twilight for you, you just stay here ok.”

She nodded, relaxing on the couch as the dragon left, laying her head down till she heard a loud squeal of joy as a small ball of blue fur rocketed out from one of the other doors, grappling onto her and giving her a tight hug as it spoke.

“I knew it I knew it I knew it! I saw you outside the window and I just knew it had to be you, daddy will be so happy!”

Kira picked up the filly, moving her down onto the floor as the filly looked at her with a broad smile on her face, smiling at her before speaking. “Well I must say you have caught me quite off guard, and I find myself curious, how do you know of me child?”

The filly smiled, “my daddy talked about you all the time, he even drew a picture of you which he keeps in his locket, which is how I knew what you looked like.”

Kira turned her full attention to the filly, her heart quickening as she spoke. “He…he drew a picture of me, um…does, does he mention where he saw me?”

“Yeah, daddy says he dreams about you every night, though some of the dreams he wakes up from leave him with scratches along his back, though now that I see you I can see why, you have cool claws.”

Kira was breathing slow breaths, but before she could ask further, she heard a gasp from upstairs, turning to see the mare known as Twilight standing on the top steps, looking at her with a look that screamed disbelief.

The filly jumped up and down when she saw Twilight, skipping around Kira as she looked up at Twilight and spoke. “Auntie Twilight look, Kira is here, she is actually here, now you can send a letter to Futile and we can live here together, isn’t that great!?”

While Kira’s heart soared at the sound of her lover’s name, she could tell the look on Twilight face was one of pure sorrow, which told her that she needed to speak with her. “Little one,” she asked, “could you leave me and your Auntie alone, I need to talk with her for a moment ok?”

The filly nodded, then ran up the stairs past Twilight as she walked down, sitting in front of Kira before getting the courage to speak. “So…so you’re her, the mare who Futile is destined to love. I…I must say I find myself extremely jealous of you, its…its hard having to deal with the fact that you lost to a mare who you thought only existed in your lovers dreams.”

That got Kira’s attention, “you…you two were lovers?”

Twilight nodded, “I…I was his last, before he started his search for you. He…he had warned me before, warned me that if I were to fall in love with him, that he might break my heart in the end, and honestly I didn’t believe him till…till he left me.”

Kira reached out a reassuring claw, rubbing Twilight’s shoulder as she looked at her with tears in her eyes. “You’re very lucky you know, not many ponies can say that they have been loved and have loved since the moment they were born. If…if it is not too personal, I would like to talk to you about these dreams, Futile never really wanted to talk about them much.”

Kira smiled, “I would love to…oh,” she said, her claw going to her belly as the triplets began kicking again, causing Twilight to rise up from her seat and walk over to her, looking surprised.

“How far along are you,” she asked, placing a hoof gently on Kira’s belly and feeling one of the foals inside kick her hoof.

“I have a little while left before they are born, though I wish I could see them now, I want see them so bad.”

“And who is the father?” asked Twilight, though she didn’t really expect an answer.

“Oddly enough, the father is Futile.”

“WHAT! But…but he said he never met you, how can…”

Kira placed a claw over Twilight’s lips, silencing her as she spoke. “Twilight, he and I have never met me, accept in our dreams. I…I don’t know how, but I think somehow, whatever magic connects us through our dreams somehow allowed use to bear children, the doctor I went to even found magical residue inside me, though he didn’t know how far it went because I didn’t want him to…well…”

Twilight’s eyes widened as Kira spoke, “you got to be bucking kidding me…you…you’re a virgin?”

Kira nodded, “never been with a male all my life, though I can’t say I am surprised that Futile didn’t stay as faithful as me, males usually are like that when confronted with such things, my great grandfather was the same way.”

That caught Twilight’s interest. “So…so these dreams are hereditary?”

“Sort of,” said Kira, “it seems to skip generations though, and in truth its more than simple dreams, it’s actually a curse, one we call The Curse of The True Loves Glimpse.”

Twilight raised an eyebrow, so Kira continued. “I know what you’re thinking, how can knowing who you are meant to be with be called a curse, well I will tell you. The way this curse works, you dream about this pony every night you are alive, and they are the most realistic dreams you will ever experience, ones that are capable of leaving you with scars like these ones on my neck, though I assume you saw similar scars on Futile, maybe ones along his back?”

Twilight nodded, so Kira spoke up again. “Another part of the curse is that you will never be able to love anypony else as deeply as the pony in your dreams, it has never been clear why, but those that have tried find that they can never feel as complete as with the pony they dream about. And the final…and possibly worst part of the curse is that you and your intended could be separated by many miles, and the case of long lived races you could even be separated by time itself. My great grandfather was one such case where he had to wait through the ages till he found the dragon of his dreams, for he had to wait a thousand years before he finally found her, for she hadn’t been born yet.”

Twilight’s jaw was on the floor after this, but after a long moment she finally closed it, gathering her wits before speaking. “That…I can’t even imagine what something like that must feel like, though…I can understand now why Futile was the way he was…I never stood a chance.”

Kira shook her head, “don’t think of yourself that way Twilight, any stallion would be lucky to have you, and I am happy that you were able to provide him comfort the way you did. Now I know this is probably the last thing you want to tell me, but would you mind telling me where he is exactly, I’m so close now I can practically feel him.”

In all honesty, Twilight didn’t want to tell Kira where Futile was, because she wanted him all to herself. She knew it was because of her jealousy, it was because of this mare that she had lost the greatest stallion in the world, and her selfish side wanted nothing more than to tell the mare before her that he had left for parts unknown, leaving Futile for her to keep.

But in the end she knew she could never do that, so with a heavy heart she looked up and spoke. “He is in Canterlot right now, staying at the store he owns while he searches, let me write down the address for you, then you can be on your way.

She quickly wrote down the address and then handed it to Kira, squeaking in surprise as she got up and hugged her. “Thank you Twilight, I can never thank you enough for this, and I will forever be in your debt.”

She then left, leaving Twilight alone as she sat in her chair, before getting up and walking upstairs to her room, heading over to the balcony outside and watching as Kira made her way to the train station. She stood there for a long moment, and then she went back to bed, curling up and sobbing as the sun fell beyond the horizon.
