Mark decided to go for a quick flight early in the morning but a few moments after leaving his home he noticed Stewart trying to get his attention from on the ground. After a little of an uneasy landing Mark realized Stewart was near the verge of tears. “You seem upset Stewart, whats wrong. I’m sure I can help.” “I. . . was taking a picnic with Cheddar and . . . something attacked us. I did not see what it was and I ran as fast as I could. Cheddar was in the picnic basket so when I got away I looked in it but he was not there. I can’t go back their alone so I decided to get help and I was on my way to one of their houses when I saw you and thought be might be able to help too.” “Of course I’ll help lets go get this other pony and see if they will come with us.”

On the way to the other pony's house Stewart explained a little more about what happened. He saw a shadow and before he could see what was causing it he heard a roar and a large gray object smashed a tree very close to him. He grabbed the picnic basket and ran away from the place he called “Froggy Bottom Bog.” When they reached the house it looked like any other house in ponyville except for a few burned spots on the walls. The owner was a red male unicorn named Roast, he had a slightly curved horn and a blue fire for a cutie mark. He was easily convinced to help out when he heard that something had attacked Stewart but he seemed more interested in finding out what it was then helping save Chedder.

On the way into the bog they started seeing more and more bubbles of swamp gas flouting about. Roast never seemed to miss a chance to make the flamable bubbles burst and cause a rather bright flash and some even made them all need to look away for a second and during one of these flashes Mark almost fell over a log but caught himself with some wild flapping of his wings and he smacked Stewart on acsident a little pushing him into Roast and causing him to get knocked into the dirt. “Darn Mark, be careful your wings really hurt.” “Sorry but SOMEPONY blinded me and I tripped.” “WELL MAYBE YOU SHOULD BOTH JUST...” suddenly there was a faint cracking noise that distracted them all from the little argument and caused their attention to be pulling away just in time for them to see something grey over the treeline that went down below the row of trees and brought two trees down with it as it vanished from sight.

After a few moments of silence Stewart was the first to talk. “Wha. . . what was that?” “Thats the hydra of froggy bottom bog! Come on lets go get it.” Roast ran off leaving Mark and Stewart to chase after him to ask what he was talking about. After almost getting lost in the woods they found their way to the swamp but no signs of the hydra Roast talked about. “Ah, it got away.” “Was that the thing that scared off Stewart?. . .” “And made me loose Chedder?” “Yes, that was the hydra of froggy bottom bog.” Roast’s eyes started to water a little as he continued. “When I was younger my little sister went out here to play with her friends. A few hours later they came back but she was not with them. They explained that a hydra attacked them and she cast a fire ball at it and hardly did anything. But they say that when it hit the hydra she got her cutie mark, they say it was a beautiful shield with a fire on it for defending her friends. After that she told them to run away and they did. She never did come back home. So I have devoted my life to practicing fire magic so one day I could come here and give it a burn so bad it will never forget what it did to my sister!”

After a long silence that seemed to manifest in a physical form and will itself onto every living creature in the bog the sound of a large rush of water and a devastating roar was heard has the hydra revealed itself to the group. Any attempts the hydra was making to ambush went terribly wrong since Roach was in an enraged state that seemed to act as fuel for a massive fireball as his horn lit on fire and the flames grew until they where a ball almost the size of his head and he screamed back at the hydra and launched the fire ball at one of the heads. The force of the impact forced the head back and caused it to make a splash as it tried to regain its bearings and join the other two heads that had taken the opportunity to swoop down and cause all three of the ponies to have to scatter back into the woods.

“Darn it Roast! Your too hot headed to realized it has more then one head. We need to stop it or it will kill us. You made it so mad its going to keep chasing us until it or us is beaten. And Stewart I’m sorry but for now we have to try to stay alive and we will have to worry about finding Cheddar when that's done. Hey maybe the fight will help him find us.” “Look I’m sorry, I’ve spent my life getting ready for this and it ends now.” “Guys stop fighting that thing is evil and needs to be stopped before it hurts more ponies.” “OK, now follow me I have a plan. Roast launch some more fire balls at it that might slow it down and Stewart keep the path clear for him.”

After running through the forest and being followed by the hydra that destroyed every tree and bush that got in the way they located a good place for a fight. They stopped in the middle of a field and all turned around to face the monster that came staggering towards them with two of its heads enraged and the third still getting over the massive fire ball Roast had hit it with. “Alright Roast now send another fire all at one of the other two heads.” “I can’t a spell that big takes a lot out of me. Using it once and all this running I can’t do it again.” “Alright so its up to me.” “Mark what about me? It took Cheddar from me and I want to get it back.” “No way if you got close enough to attack it it would eat you. And what kind of a friend would I be to let that happen”

Mark flew as fast as he could straight for the hydra and colided head on with the edge of the right head and his wing smashed into the neck of the center head. The crash worked enough to knock the wind out of both Mark and the hydra but it did much more to Mark that it did to the hydra. Mark slammed his eyes shut from the pain of his wing smashing into the hydra’s neck but he never felt himself hit the ground and when he opened his eyes he was on Stewart’s back. “Whats going on? Did we win?” “Mark your up! You took out one of the heads but the middle head got really mad when you broke your wing on it. “Broke? No I smashed into it with my wing when I was trying to take down the other head. I smacked it like thi OW!” “Told you it was broken. You got knocked out by it and we grabbed you while it was distracted and ran. We got a good lead on it but its catching up with only one head to direct it.” “I think I can run let me down here.”

As Mark climbed down he looked around but could not see Roast until a few moments later he came through the woods with smoke coming up behind it. “Oh hey Mark your up. Look we had to slow it down and I thought if it can’t see it can’t attack us. So I shot some fire balls at the trees and now the smoke will go up above the trees and blind it and we can stay below the trees and can see. See your not the only smart one here.” “Good plan but you forgot fire spreads and we are in the forest that is on fire!” “Oh good point. Don’t worry I’m sure we can get away from the hydra and the fire if we go up that hill over there. It looks like we can jump to the hill next to it if we just jump.” “You two go Its my turn to try to hit it.” “Stewart that's madness we need to keep moving.” “I said GO! You both slowed it down and now its my turn to stop it I will catch up don’t worry.” “Roast you go I'm staying with Stewart. When you get to the hill start getting a big fire ball ready we are going to need it. Stewart you wouldn’t leave me so I’m not leaving you.”

The hydra quickly closed onto Mark and Stewart and let out a terrifying roar with the only head that was not injured. “Stewart go kicks one of the hydra's legs under it I will make a distraction.” “Alright.” Mark ran to the left of the hydra flapping his good wing as much as he could to get the hydra's attention before Stewart got up close and kicked one of the legs on the right side as hard as he could. The hydra began to fall to the ground but it smacked its good head into the ground to gain stability and got back up stunned from what it had just done it had given time for Mark and Stewart to start running up to Roast for the next part of the trap.

After a minute of waiting the hydra had caught up to them and it's injured heads had started perking back up getting ready for a final battle with the bothersome meal that had gotten away from it. “INCOMING!” Roast yelled as soon as he saw the hydra in his range and he let loose a massive fire ball that went a little off target and slammed into the lower left side of the hydra bringing it to the ground with all three heads starting to snap wildly at anything it could find in range of it's jaws.

Jumping form his perch on a large stone he smacked into one of the already injured heads followed by Mark slamming at full speed into another leaving the final head giving a stare that could almost relay the pure anger inside it from the fight into Stewart who just stared back at the final head of the hydra as he realized this monstrous beast lacked a simple thing most creatures took for as a usual part of life: Mercy. “If we left it here it would just attack the next ponies that came into the swamp and they may not be strong enough to stop it like us.” Stewart muttered as the hydra continued to snap wildly at him. “It can't show mercy and as evil at it seems neither should we.” Roast spoke up as we walked over to Stewart. “It's entire existence is to consume anything that gets close to it. Even when its beaten it does not give up its attack. Stewart, is all yours.” Mark added as he joined the others. “If it had any kindness or love this woulds not be necessary.” Stewart said as he walked up, turned around, and gave the hardest kick he could muster to the open jaws of the hydra.

As the group walked back to Ponyville they stayed completely silent and seemed to bring that silence with them through the swamp. They did not know if it had been knocked out or killed on the spot. Either way it had been stopped and would not try to attack another pony for a long time. Their silence was only broken when they all got out of the forest and could see the brightly colored town in the distance as they all spoke in unison. “The things that have to be done are always the hardest.”

At the edge of town they saw Fluttershy and Rarity playing with something small on the ground and once the group got closer they could see it was a small white mouse. “Cheddar!” Stewart let out as he ran up to meet the mouse that had come to his call. “Oh this is your mouse? He came out of the bog earlier and I thought his owner would come by so Rarity and I thought we would comfort him until he came out.” Fluttershy said looking at the joy on Stewart's face as his mouse climbed up his leg and hid in his mane.

“We saved Ponyville from a monster and saved the noble mouse. A good day but I am tired, see you guys later.” Roast said as he walked to his house. “I will go too. I need to get my wing checked out.” Mark chimed in as he also departed the scene. All that was left was a very happy Stewart, Cheddar and the mares who soon departed to their own homes leaving two friends to enjoy their perfect reunion.
