FALLEN FROM THE SKIES
The Event
The sun slowly made its way through the firmament nearing the horizon line; the sky tinted in violet, orange and indigo tones as the night began to fall over Ponyville.
Indeed, the skies were always so beautiful over Equestria; every season had its own kind of beauty, even when the winter came, covering the entire land with white snow. However, today was just a warm summer evening and the clouds looked like a watercolor painting showing all the glory of the nature.
At the city, the ponies enjoyed the last strains of sun while they finished another day; the streets filled with life, shopkeepers did the last sales of the day, fillies played at the park, the smell of bakery in the air filled the nostrils of the nearby passers.
As the sunlight faded, the streets became empty with exception of a few ponies which finished they daily chores; as every city of Equestria, Ponyville was a safe place to live, this way the residents didn’t needed to worry about any kind of burglary or violence, those were very rare and isolated cases.
Close to the market district, on the library, Twilight just finished some letters and reports related to her recent researches about ancient magic, as usual, she filled dozens of pages with every kind of information and theories she was able to find and develop.
On the other hand, Spike was researching his gem cupcake baked by Pinkie especially for him, the ruby flavor was one of his favorites, and this one had a big gem right at the top.
Right when he gave the first bite (which was a wave of pure delight), dozens scrolls landed right on his head burying him into a mountain of paper.
Removing one scroll from his half eaten cupcake, he moved towards Twilight and glared her with a mouth full of rubies and pastry.
“Hehe, sorry Spike… Could you please, send this letters to the Princess?” She took one of the scrolls who was stained with icing and cleaned it with magic, and putting it back on the pile.
Spike stared at the unicorn with a frown and swallowed the rest of the cupcake. “Awww, come on Twilight… I have to send it now?” He cleaned the edges of his mouth with the back of his arm.
“No whining Spike… Besides, it’s just a few letters, when you finish it you can get the rest of the day free of any tasks, I promise” She gave him an awkward smile.
“Besides, Princess Celestia must be waiting for these reports… I don’t even know how I could delay this for three hours! Can you believe it?” Twilight said with a concerned face.
“No…” Spike rolled his eyes. ‘How can somepony be so paranoiac about a schedule?’
She glared impatiently at him while gave a quick check in the letters again.
“Ok, ok Twilight… You’ve won, I will send the letters, just stop staring me this way, it give me shivers…” Spike knew exactly her obsession with schedules, and he just couldn’t risk the probability of another madness attack…
Oh, that day still haunted him at his dreams…
Meanwhile, in Canterlot, Princess Celestia was just finishing her daily routine of duties, today unfortunately was one of those days filled with paperwork and bureaucracy, and to make the things worse, she also had to deal with some hay-traders unicorns.
‘Oh heavens… Why today they need agreements and licenses to everything… How I miss the old times when you could just use the royal Canterlot voi-’
“…Princess?” An impatient dark coated unicorn interrupted Celestia from her musings.
“…Oh, ermm, sorry…”
“Very well gentlecolts, I will send the secretary of commerce to establish contact with you soon, Mr. Silver…” The Princess said to the dark gray unicorn, which was wearing such a strange hat…
“Thank you, your Highness my company is surely pleased to serve the kingdom with the best goods” Mr. Silver bowed to the Princess; the strange ‘hat’ tumbled from his head and fell on the ground, revealing his bald spot. The Princess held her laughter, and just tried to look away awkwardly.
Mr. Silver jumped and tried to catch his hat quickly, but this just caused him to trip and slip on the polished marble floor, which eventually caused him to fall face first before the throne.
“…Oh m-my…” Celestia couldn’t hold it anymore, she burst out into laughter. “… *huf* O-oh… I’m really sorry Mr. Silver… I didn’t mean to-” She whipped a tear from her eye.
The gray unicorn stood up with a displeased face, he could say some things to the Princess, but… well she was the Princess…
“I’m fine… Have a fine day, ‘Princess’.” The upset Mr. Silver huffed and left the room followed by two royal guards who still chuckled at the situation.
As soon as the guards left the room and closed the big double doors behind them, Celestia sighed.
‘FINNALY ALONE!’ She thought relieved.
She stood up from the throne and gave a good stretched in the muscles; be a Princess was no easy task. The tired alicorn walked to the other side of the large room and went into a large hall, surrounded by colorful stained glass windows.
One of her favorites and maybe the oldest of them was the panel with the depiction of the two royal princesses of the day and the night flying in harmony. As the last stains of sun passed through the window the colored glass cast beautiful shades at the floor.
It was a relaxing view, something she used to do every day before moving the sun; this was her moment of peace…
She walked through the mosaic of light, and then went into a large balcony; the floor was parted into two color schemes, one of them had numerous yellows and golden tones, and several allusions to the sun. The other was exactly the opposite, with bluish tones and shiny moon surrounded by stars carved on it.
Celestia got into position and focused her magic: powerful jolts of energy flowed through her body and finally it reached her horn; she did this ritual every day, rain or shine, with or without her sister, for millennia; still every day was different, every day was special.
The sun slowly descended into the horizon, and finally disappeared behind the mountains; at this time Luna was besides at the balcony, preparing herself to raise the moon.
Soon after the daily duties of move the heavenly bodies were accomplished, Luna and Celestia went to the tea room, a place that both of the sisters enjoyed to have some chat, or relax from the daily stress; be an alicorn was no easy task…
“Sooo…. I do suppose that you had a ‘pleasant’ day with the hay traders, don’t you ‘Tia?” Luna said with a grim and a sarcastic tone.
Celestia glared the night princess from behind the tea cup.
“It’s easy for you to make fun of my day, when you sleeps during all of the major problems… Or you already forgot the changeling incident, when YOU were sleeping I got practically smashed and humiliated by Chrysalis.” She said with feral eyes; the kind of eyes like those from a mad serial killer.
“Thou scary eyes don’t have any effect on me sister, besides, I am the princess of the night, so I don’t have any obligation to be awake during the day” Luna just giggled “Also, is not my fault that everypony goes looking for you during the day court, I stay all the night available at the throne room.”
That bring a slightly disappointed tone from Luna, unfortunately, what she said was true; the ponies still felt uncomfortable to talk with her, and preferred to deal with Celestia.
“I’m sorry Luna… but sometimes it feels so… frustrating to pass the entire day dealing with these situations. And by the heavens, the entire world seems to watch every move I make, every word I say, I can’t even laugh without being questioned.” She sighed.
“Sometimes I just wanted to be a normal pony; walk on the streets without guards all around me, have a tea with my friends, talk silly things without going to the front pages…” Her tea was already cold, so she just cast a warming spell on the cup.
“I know sister… I really do; is really annoying to deal with those royal problems, the ponies, the agreements, Blueblood itself…” she shook her head. “Believe me; you have to be strong psychologically to endure the night when he gets drunk…”
The sisters broke into giggles. Blueblood was really a royal pain in the ass.
“…Yes Luna, I think I prefer to stay with the agreements, and the common ponies…” She was about to have a sip from her tea-cup, when a scroll pop out from nowhere and fell perfectly inside her tea, showering her face with blueberry tea.
Luna of course, started to laugh almost instantly, the royal princess of the day covered in tea wasn’t a common occurrence. “Well, Isn’t Twilight a hardworking apprentice…” She wiped a tear from her eye.
Celestia cleaned her face with a spell, and before she could begin to read the letter another one appeared right at her face, in last then one minute, about a dozen of scrolls appeared around Celestia, surrounding her in a small pound of letters.
“Too much strenuous sometimes…” She began to pick scroll by scroll and read it, while Luna finished her tea and went to the balcony to appreciate her stellar art.
The sky was clear and moonlit, the starts sparkled magnificently, Luna loved the night, all of those little dots of light enlightening the obscure void of space. Today was full moon, not a simple full moon though; it was a blue moon, an event which only occurred every fourteen lunar cycles, but of course, nopony remembered that…
Today, the brightness of the moon outshone great part of the small stars; still, one special star caught her attention, and that was a really bright one, right beside the moon.
Luna knew very well every single star, constellation, planet, and they respective orbits and aligns, but in more than two thousand years of life, she had never seen such star… How could this be possible?
She stared the mysterious star for at least half an hour, before asking Celestia.
“Err… ‘Tia?” Asked Luna in a reluctant tone; it was awkward for the princess of the night to not recognize a star in HER night sky.
“Yes Luna?” Celestia eyes looked at Luna from behind a scroll that she was reading.
“Can you recognize… That star? I mean- I don’t even know if that’s a star but… Come here, and thou shall understand.” Slightly surprised by the question, the princess stood up and came to the balcony beside her sister.
“What star Lun-” Before Celestia could finish her question, she saw the huge and brilliant object right at the side of the moon, and curiously it seemed to be slowing drifting to the left.
Miles away from the castle, at the borders of the Everfree Forest, a small yellow pegasus was assisting a family of hummingbirds to get a new nest; since last night strange storm several birds fled from the deep forest to the shores of the Everfree.
Fluttershy lived on the edges of the forest for many years, and during this time she developed a peculiar relation with the animals, and the own forest itself, she always knew when something was wrong with the place, and not just her; the animals acted like a live connection with the ecosystem.
Since about a week ago she began to sense these strange feelings emanating from the forest surroundings, it started like a strange vibe; she had felt things like this earlier, like some time days before the weeds/tentacles incident.
As the days passed by the vibe remained, and worsened; animals began to fled from the woods, the birds migrated, and even Angel became strangely unquiet.
And since last night storm things got really uncomfortable; in the morning, the own air carried a really nauseous vibe, it was everywhere, like those days when you know that something bad was about to happen.
Although, the strange vibe wasn’t coming directly from the forest, it was everywhere; the ‘thing’ was impregnated on the air itself.
The weather was unpredictable, and even Rainbow Dash couldn’t understand what caused the storm; not like the weather ponies really could understand the Everfree climate, but that storm was really unexpected.
Oddly, the evening was strangely quiet, not even a breeze disturbed the atmosphere, there was no more animal sounds coming from the woods, and the feeling had somehow decreased.
It was quiet; too quiet…
“What a wonderful scent, isn’t it Angel?” said Fluttershy while entering home.
The chocolate smell filled her nostrils, a little kettle gurgled at the fire; nothing better than a hot chocolate before sleep, and after all those problems, she really needed this.
The room was dim, lit only by the warm flames of the fireplace; Angel was at the window looking to the bright night skies, his little silhouette half lit by the moon light.
She poured some hot chocolate to herself, and went to the window to join Angel and immediately noticed the object that caught the bunny attention.
“Oh my… That’s a really strange star…” Fluttershy was about to take a drink from the hot beverage but before she could, something happened.
It began as a weak noise coming from nowhere, evolved to a light vibration which caused her drink to rattle inside the glass, the noise became louder as so the vibrations; in a matter of minutes the entire hut was shaking, paintings fell from the walls, chocolate was splattered everywhere, and Fluttershy…
Well, she panicked and hid under her bed.
Back in Canterlot, both princesses were discussing about the possible sources of the strange light.
“…Well Luna, I really don’t think that this is a star, to be frank with you, a have never seen such a thing” Stated Celestia. “Maybe it could be a meteor…”
Before Luna could reply, or even think about Celestia opinion- A sudden burst of light came from the object, followed by an explosion which enlightened the entire sky, seconds later a thunder sound echoed thought the air and made half of the glass panels of the castle to tremble and fly to pieces on the floor.
“F-or sure, that’s not a star ‘Tia…”
Celestia stood in place, eyes widened at the sight of the object quickly approaching the forest a couple of miles ahead.
At this time, Flutershy was hidden under a cabinet at her bathroom, just spending her time speaking inaudible words to herself.
“O-oh m-my… Oh my, for C-Celestia, p-please do-don’t fall here… Not on- T-the forest… P-please”
In Ponyville, Twilight, Spike and probably the entire city, went to the streets and roof tops to see the ‘falling big bright amazing strange thing’ as Pinkie Pie herself, named it.
The light coming from it was intense; the usually dark night was glowing in a very peculiar blue tone, bathing the city in a nostalgic din light.
At this time, the fallen ‘thing’ was almost as brighter as Princess Luna moon; it left some sort of ethereal yellowish trail behind itself.
Another explosion reverberated across the lands, but this time the sound was closer to the ground; the object had finally reached the ground in some place between the forest and the mountains.
Of course, the most adventurous ponies (Rainbow Dash) quickly darted to the woods seeking the meteor, what they didn’t knew was that the Princesses were faster, and by this time they were just hovering above the impact zone.
“What is this Celestia, it still glowing…” Inquired Luna in a mixed tone of curiosity and concern; she was the first one to land on the crashing site.
The ‘thing’ left a respectable hole on the forest; al the nearby trees were… well, they ‘weren’t’ anymore. It was just ashes and this strangely glowing yellow powder.
As she approached the deeper parts of the crater, something on the object caught her attention; as the light began to fade away, they could finally have a sight at the… “An… Alicorn???”
“T-this can’t be possible… J-just can’t!” Said the night princess, as she slowly backed away.
“I suppose… that’s this is exactly what it looks like, my dear sister…” Celestia spoke securely, but she was clearly as stunned as Luna.
“In my entire life, I never heard about…” She stared at Celestia eyes. “… any kind of being, which possessed this… this…” She sighed. “There’s no Alicorn except us, Cadence family, and Twilight… ”
She was hesitant about the alicorn thing, in fact, Luna hated to not be able to explain something.
“Well Luna… Then I suppose that our Alicorn ‘databank’ needs to be updated, because this is exactly what looks like” Celestia approached the creature; right there, in front of her, was huge Alicorn, perhaps by her size, or even bigger.
He had a brilliant white fur; a beautiful but broken chest plate covered his upper torso, attached to each ear, was a golden piece, and to the base of each hoof to almost the knees, a large metal piece.
He was lying on the ground unconscious, his huge wings contorted and twisted, dirt and fragments of stone covered his body, from its wounds, ran some kind of silvery liquid, at his barrel, a deep bruise half hidden by the armor plates. Looking closer, the creature was severely wounded.
“Luna, we have to do something, the ponies can’t find him this way, besides he is terribly hurt…”
During all the time, the Alicorn didn’t expressed the minimal reaction to the princesses; his light was fading away, as so as his silver blood, that by now just soaked almost the entire crash site.
“V-very well sister, let’s get him to the castle, we can’t fix him right here in the middle of the forest…”
But then, when the princesses approached the unconscious creature, he suddenly opened his eyes and stood up in a matter of seconds.
He was about a head higher than Celestia, and his eyes… Was nothing but white light. ‘Definitely not a normal pony…’
“You’re hurt, please, let us help you!” Said Celestia
He looked deeply into her eyes and just soared into the night sky, but before he could got some altitude, one of his wings apparently lost control; his body began to spin out of control.
Without think, Luna took off and embraced his body with a blue aura of magic, levitating his unconscious body to the ground.
“S-sister, he’s dying, we can fell it! We have to go back to the castle, NOW” Celestia just nodded, and with a touch of her horn on her sister one, they just teleported instantly.
Right on time; a few seconds later a horde of Pegasus arrived on the scene, but only to find an empty hole on the ground.
Well… Not completely empty, ‘cause right on the middle of the crater, one single piece of his armor was laying almost entirely covered with dirt and blood.
“This thing caused all that ‘firework’ show???” Said a cyan blue pegasus while pointing to the object on the ground.
“I’m pretty sure that’s not the only thing that fell here Rainbow…” Said Twilight, which just appeared on the other side of the crater, followed by spike, and a small group of ponies.
She observed the metal piece, and stared it closely. ‘The princess must know something about it…’
“C’mon Spike, let’s go back to the library. We have to send some letters…”
