Chapter 1: The Secret

(Note: The ponies are humanized (and so is Spike))

It was a beautiful night in Ponyville, a full moon, the stars were shining, and most people were peacefully sleeping. Almost everyone, but not Twilight Sparkle. No, she couldn't fall asleep, how could she? She had just spent the whole day with one of her many friends, Rainbow Dash. No, Twilight Sparkle couldn't sleep, all she could think about was that rainbow-haired girl.

"Oh Rainbow, why can't I just tell you my feelings?" Twilight said softly to herself. Twilight lay there, dreaming about her friend. Dreaming of holding hands, dreaming of walking together through the town, dreaming of sleeping next to one another, dreaming of kissing. Just then, there was a knock on the door. "Oh come on," Twilight whispered to herself, "someone's knocking at this hour?" Twilight walked downstairs and opened the door. "Hi Applejack," she said.

"Howdy Twilight! I just came by to ask ya about somethin'," Applejack responded.

"Oh really? Well what is it?"

"I think it's better if we discuss it, inside," So they went inside, Twilight didn't know what Applejack could possibly want to talk about at this hour.

"Is this table fine?" Twilight asked.

"Yeah it's fine," Applejack said sitting down. "Listen Twi, I've been noticing strange behavior lately,"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, the way you act around Rainbow Dash," Applejack said. Twilight's heart started pounding faster in her chest.

"W-what do y-you mean?" asked Twilight.

"Well the way you're shaking is kind of a give away,"

"I-I don't know w-what you're t-talking about,"

"Don't lie Twilight, I'm very good at catching liars, being the Element of Honesty and all," Twilight thought about this, and decided to submit.

"Okay, f-fine, you caught me, I-I have a c-crush on R-Rainbow Dash," Twilight said.

"It's okay Twilight, you can stop shaking now," Applejack said, noticing Twilight was slightly shaking. Applejack chuckled at this. They sat there until Twilight wasn't shaking anymore.

"So Twilight, you alright now?" Applejack asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Twilight said as she got up and started walking towards the stairs. "Sorry, I have to go to bed,"

"Alright well, is it alright if I sleep down here tonight? I pretty tired after that walk, and I think it'd be pretty nice to get away from the family once in a while,"

"Yeah, it's fine," Twilight said as she walked upstairs.

"Goodnight," Applejack called.

"Goodnight," Twilight responded, still shaken from the talk. Twilight fell into her bed and instantly fell asleep.

When The morning came Twilight woke up to the smell of waffles. Twilight walked downstairs and saw Applejack in the kitchen cooking.

"You're still here?" Twilight asked.

"Well I thought I'd do somethin' nice since I made you all nervous last night," Applejack chuckled remembering Twilight's somewhat overreaction.

"Yeah, last night," Twilight said.

"Are those waffles I smell?" Spike said coming down the stairs. All three of them sat at the the table eating their waffles. "Wait a minute, why are you here Applejack?" Spike asked.

"Oh I just came to talk to Twilight about her crush on Ra-, I mean have a nice sleepover with Twilight," Applejack caught herself. ("Curse you Element of Honesty,") Applejack thought to herself.

"Wait a minute, what were you saying about a crush?" Spike asked.

"Nothing, I didn't say anything about a crush," Applejack lied.

"No, you did!"

"Alright I did! But it's not my place to tell ya, it's Twilight's," Applejack said. Spike looked at Twilight.

"Who is it, Twilight?" Spike asked.

"None of your business, Spike,"

"Oh come on!"

"No Spike!"

"Come on Twilight! I told you who I had a crush on!" Spike said. Twilight remembered when Spike told her and Pinkie about his crush on Rarity, although it was obvious and didn't surprise Twilight, Spike still had a point.

"Okay fine, but you cannot tell anyone, only I can, got it?"

"Yes I get it," Spike said excitedly.

"Alright," Twilight breathed in, and out, "I have a crush on Rainbow Dash,"

"Rainbow Dash? Wait a minute, aren't you both girls? Isn't that kind of weird?"

"No Spike, it is not weird at all, it's perfectly natural," Twilight said somewhat angrily, annoyed at herself for not teaching Spike about sexuality sooner.

"Oh okay," Spike said slightly shocked at the slight anger, "I guess that's cool then,"

"Spike, we're going to have a talk about sexuality later, you're old enough now,"

"Oh boy, I can't wait," Spike said sarcastically. "Anyway, I'm gonna go do my chores, see ya later Applejack!" Spike said as he put his plate in the sink and walked out of the kitchen.

"See ya, Spike!" Applejack responded. "Well Twilight I guess I'll see ya later. But between you and me, you might want to ask some other friends of yours for help on telling Rainbow your feelings, because you're gonna have to sooner or later. You can come by anytime to talk to me if ya want. See ya!" And Applejack left. Twilight sat there for about 30 seconds before deciding ("You know what, I will ask my other friends for advice!")

"Spike I'm heading out to visit some friends, I'll be back in a while!" she called to Spike.

"Alright, bye!" he called back. And Twilight was out the door.
