Zel Digsite and his companion Cloverveil travel around the planet unearthing it's equine secrets from ages long forgotten. Zel is a world renown archaeologist traveling about looking for relics to shed more light on the ponies and their past. He's taken the jaded green earth pony Cloverveil as his assistant in an effort to make her more than a bundle of hate. Princess Celestia sends the duo to Marelasia to investigate what was once a Changeling kingdom, to better learn a way to defend against Queen Chrysalis and her Changeling horde.
