Song of Nightingale

Where it all began

It was morning and in the early hours of the day Equiestria's youngest flying hopeful, Nightingale, was out enjoying the cool breeze. She couldn't get enough of the morning sun and how she wished to feel the moist air against her wings. The blue filly's eyes stared up at the sky, for one day she would join her fellow Pegasi in the clouds. "One day I'll be big an strong enough to fly." She spoke softly and closed her eyes as another gust of air passed her. Nightingale closed her eyes as tightly as she possibly could and flapped her wings vigorously but did not succeed. As she landed and sighed with such fatigue in her breath. "Soon..." A small tear slowly rolled down her cheek.

"Nightingale! Honey! I've got a surprise for you!" The filly's mother had called out to her. Nightingale perked up her ears in shock, she never get's surprises.

Immediately, she ran over to her mother and smiled with pure joy. "Ma, what is it? What is the surprise?" She giggled happily, hopping about the open plains with pure excitement. Her dear mother smile and handed her a small, thin shaped piece of paper. "Uhh, what is it?" Night asked.

"It is a ticket. Your ticket. You are going to the the Wonderbolts!" Nightingale stared, just stared.

Her eyes glistened as the tears were welling up in her eyes. She just couldn't contain herself any longer! "Oh my gosh! Thank you so much Ma! Thank you!" She looked down at her ticket then back at her Mom. "Wait, where's yours?"

Mama smiled awkwardly and sighed. "Nighty, I can't go with you...We cannot afford two tickets. I am very sorry. You will have to go on your own." Nightingale stared at her mother and nodded silently, understanding the situation.

Nightingale stood longingly in the audience, awaiting her heroes. She eagerly stretched out her neck, trying to get a glimpse of at least one of the Wonderbolts. Soon the show would be starting but she would hardly know, she couldn't even see! But, at last, a very kind gentlecolt allowed her room to the front. After about five minutes of excitement and waiting, the Wonderbolts began with a race. Night hopped up and down along the bannister and flapped her wings, she was too stoked about all of this. She couldn't believe it, her heroes were racing right in front of her!

The day was long but enjoyable. The air got much hotter during the day, especially in Canterlot where the event took place. Nightingale went to get a cold drink due to the sudden change in temperature. Along her travels to the refreshments room she met a young colt, about her age. She immediately went over and greeted him. "Hello!" The filly said, happily.

The colt was grey in colour with a dark blue mane. He looked at her with a shocked expression before looking down shyly. Night tilted her head slightly and passed a cup of water to him. "You alright? W-what's your name?" She tried her best not to sound pushy or to make him any more uncomfortable.

The male nodded. "My name is Descent." He looked up at her.

Nightingale stared at him then smiled. "Hehe, that is an awesome name! I'm Nightingale." Descent just smiled and shook her hoof. He could see that this friendship could last.

Fifteen years had passed since the amazing appearance of the Wonderbolts. Nightingale remembered that day as though it was yesterday. By now, her and Descent had become partners-in-crime and live together in a small house within the Everfree forest. The house only had one floor with four rooms: A bedroom with two separate beds, a dense bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. The living room was the largest room of all. It was usually freezing in the house, not much sun peered through the grim trees of the forest so it was difficult to get heat. This bothered no one.

Nightingale awoke by the sound of her alarm. She hated it with a passion but work needed to be done. The blue mare dragged her tired body over to the kitchen and sat down, slumping her head against the table. Her eyes remained half-lidded and she strained to see any light peering through the windows. "Why do I get up in the morning? It's Descent's work I will be doing anyway. He is so damn lazy.." She sighed as her mind went wild with criticisms directed towards Descent.

Eventually that very same colt awoke, he awoke to hearing a loud crash. He swiftly got up and went to the kitchen just to find Nightingale upon the floor. Des couldn't help but snigger at her fall. "Um...Night? You do realize you are on the floor?" He burst out laughing. Nightingale stared up at him, her eyes bagged with fatigue. She kicked him in the foreleg and laughed as he fell onto the floor too. Descent crashed onto the slippery, tiled floor and whimpered. "Ow......Don't you have something better to do that kick me about?"

Night feebly got up and laughed. She helped Descent up to. "No actually. But I believe that YOU have got something to do, remember?" She stared at her colt friend, who was looking very dazed. "Ugh, do I have to spell it out for you?" She grunted and walked towards the other side of the room. "You've got an assignment with Thunderlane that is due in today." Descent looked shocked, his eyes widened with fear. He raced out of the door without saying another word.

The grey male ran out of the house and into the foggy mist that was the Everfree forest. It felt as though he was running in circles. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked around frantically. "Oh no, oh no! I-I can't be lost!" He couldn't see any sign of another pony or pony civilization. He carried on running forward, his eyes wide open and the occasional tear falling out of them. Descent felt as though he was just running deeper into the forest. His feelings were correct. He ran further into the murky depths of the trees. Finally, he came to a small clearing. He became frantic again and looked everywhere. Suddenly he heard a faint voice in the wind. It kept getting louder and louder and sounded as though it was singing. "Come here. I can help you find your way." The voice called out, in the darkest part of the forest. Descent calmed down slightly as he walked deeper into the Everfree forest...
