Octavia was in a soft, warm, dark place where all was right with the world. Then the damned alarm went off.
She flailed around in a sort of fuzzy half consciousness till her questing hoof found the offending device and she was able to turn it off.
For a moment she just lay there, answering all of those important questions that crop up when you first wake up in the morning. Things like “is there actually a good reason for me to get out of this soft warm bed?” and “who exactly is this that is asking the questions?”
Eventually sleep refused to reclaim her and Octavia was forced to sit up in bed and almost hopped onto the floor before she caught herself.
She’d spent too long away from Ponyville, and going without Vinyl’s morning surprises had made her careless.
The grey mare peered over the side of her bed at the spot where she had almost dropped down on and saw the dull black outline of the bear trap and smiled. It was good to be home.
Gingerly she avoided the trap and went over to the closet and sidestepped as she opened it, narrowly avoiding an ax that dropped right where her skull would have been. Humming a soft tune to herself she carefully selected a thick branch with lots of deep gouges on its ends, and used it to spring the bear trap.
Knowing that her housemate would still be sleeping off her nightly binge of alcohol and assorted pills, Octavia went over to the luggage and packages she’d acquired while in Canterlot, briefly wondering if Vinyl would have thought to booby trap that as well, but a quick inspection revealed nothing out of place.
She carefully picked out a brown box tied shut with string, and an occasion chitinous leg sliding out of the air holes and the sound of something scuttling about.
Carrying it by the string in her teeth, Octavia trotted into the hall, the official neutral zone of the house, and over the slightly open door to Vinyl’s room.
She nudged it open as silently as she could, and was pleased to see Vinyl laying on her back with the covers an utter mess on the floor, her legs twitching in her sleep.
Octavia carefully set her package down and considered the room.
Her own was neat, decorated with pictures of family and the odd classical print she picked up on her travels. Vinyl’s room however was a chaotic masterpiece.
At first glance it appeared to just be a mess, and even Vinyl would admit that for a good portion it was, however beneath the piles of discarded clothes, empty bottles and pizza boxes, and no less than four overflowing ashtrays it appeared that some sort of maniac had been allowed to amuse herself with several bright and clashing buckets of paint.
Well two maniacs, Octavia thought, that was a fun day. It had been when they had metaphorically buried the hatchet, crossbow, butcher knife, meat cleaver, the interesting poisons and powerful but localized explosives.
Of course, given the rather odd nature of their relationship they still had all of these things, but at least now the malice and resentment was gone.
Also adorning the chaotic art of Vinyl’s walls were numerous posters, photographs and paintings of a shocking nature. Some were violent, many were pornographic, a disquietingly large number combined the two, and all of them had utterly scandalized Octavia when the white unicorn had first moved in. Particularly the self portraits, one of which now hung on Octavia’s wall.
For a moment she considered waking Vinyl and having some fun there and then, but ultimately went back to her package and undid the string holding it shut, tipped its contents onto the floor and quickly exited, shutting the door firmly behind her.
She sighed happily and wandered towards the kitchen.
As Octavia had noted when she’d gotten home so late last night the kitchen was a deplorable mess. There was a pyramid of beer cans on the table, which she carefully cleared away, disarming a really quite inventive trap hidden behind the dead soldiers as she did so.
It was a nasty clockwork thing with a sensitive pressure plate on which most of the pyramid’s weight rested. Once the weight was removed a bolt was fired out of each side of the device at exactly the height of Octavia’s neck.
Obviously Vinyl had really missed her if she’d gone to this much trouble.
The earth pony considered the rest of the mess in the kitchen and wonder how much of it contained something lethal.
It turned out that almost all of it had some sort of trap. Octavia narrowly avoided four large knives that fell when she gathered up the empty boxes of Chineighs take out, one of the pizza boxes held quite a clever little spring loaded device that flung ninja stars at her face, and doing the dishes that had piles up activated a small bomb that would have blown her forelegs off if Octavia hadn't been quick enough jumping back.
Satisfied for now, she started to make breakfast.

Vinyl awoke to the smell of pancakes and coffee, which frankly did not seem appetizing right now, but then very few things do when the inside of your mouth tasted like some small rodent had been using it as a lavatory and some maniac had filled your brain with red hot marbles.
Still, she knew it would help with the hangover, though not as much as the mare cooking it getting her on her back would, but such plans could wait.
For now Vinyl sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. When she blinked away the last of the bleariness she looked down at what was fast approaching her and screamed.

Vinyl tossed her pillow at the horrible little thing scuttling towards her with murder in it’s eyes.
What the hell is it with Octavia and poisonous animals?! she wondered. Last month it had been a scorpion, and at least once she’d dumped a bunch of deadly jellyfish into the bathtub when Vinyl had fallen asleep there.
The monstrous spider casually tossed the pillow aside, but Vinyl was already in motion, and leapt down onto the horrible little beasty with both forehooves, crushing it into paste.
Vinyl was not one to worry about appearances, but even she wasn't about to spend the day with spider guts on her hooves.
A few minutes later Octavia heard her shout “dammit!” and a solid thump before the mare came wandering down to the kitchen and gave her a sheepish grin.
“Forgot about the crossbow trap in the bathroom.”
Octavia just smiled and presented her with a huge steaming mug of black coffee and a plate of pancakes, hash browns and fried eggs.
Vinyl stared down at the plate, feeling no appetite at all, but knew she’d feel better for eating it.
Midway through the meal she was already feeling better, and glanced up at Octavia who was gingerly eating her own breakfast.
“You know I love you?”
This made Octavia smile demurely and blush a little.
“I love you too, and by the way I was really impressed with the trap in the beer pyramid,” she frowned “was that all your work?”
“Yeah, I put the mechanism together out of a few cuckoo clocks and a set of scales,” she took a long pull of the coffee, “what's in the coffee this morning? Doesn't taste like arsenic.”
“Cyanide, love, we’re out of arsenic.”
“Really? I’ll pick up some more later.”
“You don’t care for cyanide?”
Vinyl shook her head.
“Cyanide is ok, but it doesn't go as well in coffee in my opinion, is it in the pancakes?”
“A little, yes.”
“Really? Works pretty well with them then.”
“Yes, it does add a bit of piquancy doesn't it?”
Needless to say the two had built up an immunity to most poisons over the years they’d been roommates, but Vinyl considered it was the thought that counted since Octavia really went in for poisons.
“By the way, what kind of spider was that you let loose in my room this morning?”
Octavia leaned back in her chair and stared at the ceiling.
“I’m not sure, I found it in Canterlot cocooning a dog.”
Vinyl nodded, unsurprised. You got a lot of those sort of things in Canterlot due to the excessive magical run off. Generally anything too lethal was put down quickly but you still regularly found things like monkey-gators in the sewers.
The two ate in companionable silence, and when they finished Vinyl produced a packet of cigarettes, took one and proffered the pack to Octavia.
She loved watching the earth pony smoke, partially because lacking unicorn magic she had to carefully extract the cigarette with her lips, and then when it was finally lit she smoked like she had a grudge against it.
Vinyl leaned back in her chair and propped a leg up on the table and smiled, peering at Octavia over her glasses. She knew that the mare now had a nice view of her.
For her part Octavia allowed her gaze to wander down across Vinyl’s body, and began to take deep draws on her cigarette as she marveled at the muscles subtly shifting beneath her white coat.
“Got any plans for today, Octy?” Vinyl put as much impudence as she could into her words, knowing that it drove the mare crazy.
“None that can’t wait,” She leaned forward and dropped the butt of her cigarette into the ashtray, “I can see something important has come up.”
Vinyl considered her marefriend as she hopped down onto the floor and stalked towards her. The hungry, dangerous gleam in her eyes, the way she moved almost like a predator on the hunt, the intensity held in every movement.
Vinyl took her own cigarette out of her mouth and shot Octavia a cocky grin.
“And what would that be?”
Octavia drew up close to her, planted a hoof on the table and raised herself up to vinyl’s eye level, breathing in the reek of sweat, beer, bourbon and cigarettes that clung to the mare at all times and never failed to get a rise out of her.
“Disciplining a certain unruly pony I know,” she growled inches from Vinyl’s face.
Vinyl licked her lips and gazed into Octavia’s eyes.
“I think I know who you’re talking about, and I've gotta warn you, she’ll put up a fight,” the cigarette wrapped in magic drifted close to Octavia’s side, where she could feel the heat radiating from its cherry.
“Good,” said Octavia “I like a nice brawl.”
With that Vinyl shoved the cherry of the cigarette into Octavia’s side.
Octavia, let out a heartfelt groan.
“Like that don’t you bitch?” Vinyl whispered.
“G-goddamn right I do.”
Octavia suddenly leapt forward with a snarl, tackling Vinyl painfully to the floor and following that up with a fierce passionate kiss that Vinyl melted into.
Vinyl lived for moments like this, pinned beneath the earth pony’s greater weight, knowing how utterly helpless she was, and being treated roughly even as her lover lost herself in the kiss.
When they pulled apart, both breathing heavily Vinyl smiled and ran a hoof along Octavia’s side, stopping at the cigarette burn to push her hoof in painfully, making Octavia moan in a combination of pain and desire.

Octavia growled, a deep throaty animal sound.

Vinyl smiled and nodded, then lashed out with a left hook to the side of Octavia’s temple sending the mare sprawling.

Both ponies climbed to their hooves, breathing hard and their nethers soaking wet.
“Gonna have to work for it, cunt!” Vinyl snarled.
“Oh you know you want it, you little slut,” Octavia answered, “I can smell you from here.”
Vinyl answered with a smile and lunged, Octavia juked left and rammed the side of the unicorns neck with her head sending her to the floor again, reared up and slammed down onto the prone mare, knocking the wind out of her.
Acting fast, Octavia circled a foreleg around Vinyl’s neck and pulled upward, cutting off her air. Vinyl thrashed, and then managed to spin around in Octavia’s grip, from which position she was able to headbutt the mare, opening up a deep gash across her forehead.
The combatants separated again, Octavia wiping a hoof across her face to clear the blood out of her eyes, and Vinyl breathing hard.
“I wonder if the rest of your orchestra knows what a psycho bitch you are,” Vinyl gave an evil smile, “or if they all just think you’re a snob?”
Octavia launched herself at the pale unicorn, who made no move to dodge or steady herself as the earth pony mare shoulder checked her to the ground.
“Its a bloody orchestra,” Octavia matched Vinyl’s evil smile with one of her own that made Vinyl wet, “every last cunt in it is a snob.”
“Heh, language, Octy,” Vinyl climbed to her hooves “wouldn't want all those rich fucks who go to your shows to hear that.”
Octavia landed a ringing blow to the side of Vinyl’s head as the heat grew in her gut. She paused to wipe more blood out of her eyes.
“The audience can get fucked, love,” she sneered and pressed a hoof against the side of Vinyl’s neck.

“Couldn't even wait five bloody minutes,” Octavia stood in the hall with saddlebags on and a look of mock annoyance on her face, “honestly Scratch what am I going to do with you?” Vinyl grinned and brought her sodden hoof to her mouth as Octavia placed the bags on the floor.
“I’m sure you have some ideas,” Vinyl said before giving her hoof a lick.
“Oh don’t I just,” Octavia purred as she began to unload the bag’s contents.
The first thing to catch Vinyl’s eye was a toy she’d cobbled together as a Hearth’s Warming present for Octavia last year.
