"Twilight I am glad you came," said Celestia, quickly hiding her fifth piece of cake, as Twilight entered the throne room.
"Of course your highness, but why am I here when finals are tomorrow? Shouldn't I be studying?" Twilight responded.
Celestia smiled, “they are tomorrow, aren't they? Oh well, you don't really need to worry about them.”
Twilight freaked. She had already heard of the rumors that Celestia was going to get a new student, but now to be hearing Celestia say her studies didn't matter was the last bit. She lost it, “Celestia, I can make it up. Oh! I know I can do a project on the history of magic since the beginning of time! Wait, no! I can do . . .” she went on in this manner for a while before the full on titzy fit hit.
"Twilight dear, I am not kicking you out," Celestia said, as she tried to calm down Twilight who was, at that time, teleporting out of control . "I am guessing you heard the rumors I was going to a new student,” Celestia said with a smirk.
Twilight nodded. Realizing that some how she had got stuck in the marble ceiling.
"Well don't worry, Twilight. The rumors are only partly true. I am getting a new student but he isn't to replace you. He is to help challenge you," Celestia said, while she pulled Twilight unstuck, after her tizzy fit. Celestia also whispered to her, “and to see if some of your work ethic can rub off onto him.”
Twilight looked surprised, who was there that could challenge her? And, what did she mean about work ethic?’
Celestia looked up, “he should have been here by- oh wait here he is.”
A lime green stallion with a forest green mane walked in through the large wooden throne room doors, with a book shaped pillow as a cutie mark. Looking quite sleepily, he called out to Celestia and Twilight, “I see she took the news well,” motioning to the damage on the ceiling.
Twilight blushed a bit, looking around, there were scorch marks all across the ceiling and there was a rut or two wore in the from her frantic pacing.
"Twilight, I would like you to meet Daylight Dull. In spite of his name, I don't think he has ever been up in time to see an actual sunrise,” Celestia quipped.
Twilight laughed, having recognized the stallion from an old class they shared. He slept through the entire thing and barely managed to pass,"How can he challenge me when he sleeps all the time and never makes above a D in a class?"
Celestia looked at Twilight and calmly said, “his test scores are higher than yours though,” at this Twilight's jaw hit the floor.
"Hey, just cause I sleep through classes, study time, breaks, daytime, lunch, and any other minute I can, doesn't mean that I don't know the material," smirked the sleepy Daylight. “I just like naps.”
Twilight was dumbfounded. This was the guy who slept through everything, never turned anything in, and was known for eating in the library. For ponies sake! Twilight looked at Celestia, “you can't be serious?” Celestia looked at him. She motioned towards Daylight who had lost interest in the conversation and looked to be trying to take a nap in the middle of the throne room, “he sleeps more than Spike.”
“Still in the room here. And, who is Spike?” Daylight responded, sounding mildly annoyed. While making a bed out of the red carpet that ran down the center of the throne room
Celestia smiled, this is perfect. Two brainiacs who are polar opposites. This should push them to do their best, or in Daylight’s instance, wake up before noon. “OK you two! Now no arguing, I just wanted you to meet as you will be doing your summer studies together, and I wanted to introduce you two before then, and this was the only time I wouldn't be in a meeting this week, or next, or the next,” Celestia sighed.
“But, how can he be your student if he is always asleep?” Twilight said with a bit of confusion.
“I think it is best that Daylight explains that one himself,” Celestia sighed realizing how their personalities could clash for the first time.
Daylight yawns and stretches out, “well it is quite simple. I always sleep, so I can study,”Daylight says smiling as if that explains everything.
Celestia face hoofs. If she hadn't seen his scores, with her own eyes, she could swear he was a bigger idiot than Prince Blueblood, “I think she needs more of an explanation that that.”
“Oh, OK,”Daylight said, getting back up from a bed, that Celestia could of swore wasn't there seconds before. “I use a spell while I sleep that allows me to astral project. So, I can sleep all day long, never move, and read an entire wing of the Canterlot archives.”
Twilight teleported across the room, tackling Daylight, “you must teach me this spell. Then, I will never have to stop studying again,” Twilight said with a bit of lust and a dreamy look in her eye.
Celestia quickly saw how this could turn out, and intervened, “I don't think that would be in your best interest Twilight. Astral projection takes a lot of time to master and can be extremely dangerous, if it wasn't Daylight’s special talent, I would force him to stop.”
“By the way daylight i am adding a few spells throughout the castle which will render your astral from visible to others” celestia added knowing good and well how a young stallions mind can wonder.
“OK well with the formalities out of the way,” Celestia said
“And, with Twilight unstuck from the ceiling,” Daylight added.
Celestia just looked at him, “I would like both of you to start working together on some magic endurance exercises the day after finals at sunrise.”
Daylight looked up, “is that like directly at sunrise or is that a loose 2-3 hour window kinda thing?” said daylight looking quite worried that his average of 16 hours of sleep a day might get interrupted.
Celestia just sighed, wondering if she could undo this decision, “I am the physical embodiment of the sun. When I say sunrise, I mean sunrise.”
Daylight, seeing he had pushed things just a bit too far, quickly saluted, “yes ma’am.” And, went stiff.
Twilight followed in the act, not wanting to be out shown quickly saluted, “yes ma’am.”
“Oh, and Twilight. I am moving Daylight from his dorm to the old observatory here in the castle, would you mind showing him where it is?” Celestia asked.
Twilight nodded, noticing that Daylight was asleep yet again decided instead of waking him up just to levitate him and his bed out of the door with her. She wasn't overly careful about bumping into walls, but daylight never woke once.
Celestia sighed they were finally gone. she grabbed her cake and called for a servant to go fetch her another. To help nurse her oncoming headache. She wasn't sure who is worse the uptight nobles or her new student.
