Crystal Stained Tears
Assembling the Armies of the Great North
Previous ChapterAssembling the Armies of the Great North
Deep within the snows of the northern Crystal Mountains lies a temple now long forgotten and buried deep beneath the snow. The temple is that of Ice and Snow and is buried deep in history and lore as a place of evil and cunning. An evil used to reside in its hollowed out halls but was dispatched by a princess and defeated subsequently. In the main hall, lies a mass of stone on the floor of the ancient temple covered in crystals and dust.
"I think this is the coldest it has ever been in the Crystal Empire it is best to maybe sport a coat... coldest... it... has.. ever.. been.. in.. the.. Crystal Empire..." were the words echoed from Cadence's lips and taken by the wind to the far reaches of the Crystal Mountains and into the temple in which the mass of stone lay. Slowly, the mass of stone began to stir and move violently the crystal's that had formed on it shattered into little stars. The stone began to erupt and crack showing great beams of light, cascading the walls in an almost heavenly appearance. The stone soon shattered revealing a unicorn that had been awaken from a slumber for far too long. The unicorn fell to the ground but need not have struggled in getting up.
"Finally, I am free from my stony prison. Cadence broke the seal with her words that the wind so gracefully carried to my dead ears, in which now I awoke and have come back to take what is mine. Now Celestia will taste my true power and might as I will march on Equestria and take everything in my wake" Frost-Walker said in defiance and with a snort. His white fur and mane was long and wavy but dried and brittle and his beard had bits of grey showing near his chin for even though he was hundred's of years old he never really groomed himself seeing it as a boring job when he could be conquering kingdoms.
“The words that were uttered in the wind tells me but one thing… that the dawn of Frost-Walker the great has finally come to bear” Frost-Walker said with a slight huff. He looked about his eyes blinded slightly after being trapped in stone for so long as he rubbed them with his hoof. In anger and ferocity, he released an icy blast from his horn on to the ceiling causing a great black crystal to form. “For too long have I sat idle, FOR too long has Equestria been free from the might of Ice and Snow, and FOR TOO LONG has that upstart Princess Celestia been a thorn in my icy side” Frost-Walker screamed into the icy temple of the North and yet no one heard him. He looked around and only saw banners that bore his symbol the White Crystal of the North and the forever glowing blue flame that illuminated the darkness ever slightly. Frost-Walker saw in the depths of the dark a hall that led somewhere and he trotted towards it. He lit his horn it glowed a pale blue but showed very brightly in the dark corridors of the temple. As he trotted down the hall he saw Ice Crystals forming on the ceiling and down the halls large blue and sharp. He walked further down the hall and came to a room with five different paths into the temple each with a banner bearing the White Crystal red with blood.
“Those brave gobponies risking their lives and strength to fight for me and to bring Equestria to its knees” Frost-Walker said with a slight sigh looking at the banners. He looked down each path and grinned slightly as if they were old friends and the memories they shared. He was looking for something far in the distance as he stuck his ear into the wind. He heard down the main hall a slight heeve and he headed in the direction of it. The hall was extremely dark even with Frost-Walker having lit his horn. “Ah there it is!” Frost-Walker said looking towards two great doors of Ancient Snow Spruce and Iron. Beyond the doors was the ancient library of the Crystal Mountain Kings. “My plans begin here-OW!” Frost-Walker yelped as he reached for the handles of the ancient library doors and pulled away his hoof as it received a burn. “What the hell is that?” he said with a shrill of anger in his voice, the handles were trapped in a blue flame spell that was extremely powerful and anypony who touched it would be instantly burned. “I believe Celestia thinks she has bested me with her so called spell well prepare to eat your heart out, Princess” Frost-Walker muttered to himself with a slight grin. Frost-Walker positioned himself in front of the door. He closed his eyes and began to mutter a spell. His horn glowed a ghastly blue and white.
Ancient Keys,
Here my call,
Break this lock,
So I can walk,
In the tombs of the old.
Frost-Walker finished his chant and opened his eyes and watched the lock. The flames began to shutter and dissipate and soon the doors were clear. “You see Celestia, your magic is weak and powerless against me” Frost-Walker sneered to himself. Frost-Walker put his hoof forward cautiously fearing if it was the incorrect spell to relinquish the flame. Frost-Walker touched the door and it felt like the old spruce wood and he pushed forward on the door and it creaked loudly and echoed through the halls. Frost-Walker peeked his head in and looked about it was very dark within the ancient library. Frost-Walker breathed deeply smelling the old books, cherry red shelves, and the smell of musk. Cobwebs strewn the library from the tiny ice spiders, which could only live in these far northern wastes. Frost-Walker trotted in to the dark searching among the shelves and watching cautiously for anything that could be lurking in these halls. “Where is it? I knew it was around here somewhere” Frost-Walker said puzzled looking for a book of ancient text. The Ancient Library of the Crystal Mountain Kings was one of the largest and last surviving libraries in Equestria that housed ancient texts and scrolls from long ago. Frost-Walker had lived for very long but not as long as the Ice Temple nor Celestia but he was old. The books that lined the shelves were dusty and moldy but were special in that a special dye and ink had been used for their covers never to lose their illustrations nor colors. The shelves were a rainbow of vibrantly colored books and scrolls that told everything from battle plans to herbal remedies.
“Ah here it is” Frost-Walker said with a sigh of relief coming to a shelf with a beautiful, large, hugely illustrated, green book. Frost-Walker used his magic and brought the book down from the shelf and carried over to a table where he set it down. The book was entitled:
Ancient Spells for Conjuring, Summoning, and Other Works
The book had a horrific but beautifully illustrated picture of a Crystal Troll its green soulless eyes seeming to follow where ever one goes. Frost-Walker opened the book and a great cloud of dust came into his face. “ACHOO!” he sneezed practically making a small gust of wind. Frost-Walker looked through the book it was filled with colorful illustrations of monsters, diagrams of spell conjuring and the effects, and many other evil but wonderful things. Frost-Walker pondered about how he could conquer Equestria and bring Celestia to her knees. Frost-Walker looked among the scrolls and found an ancient map and brought it over to the table. The map was illustrated with the many places in Equestria and was colored intricately down to the last square. Frost-Walker pondered at the ancient map looking it over and fiddling with his beard, even though the world outside had greatly changed he figured the map was pretty accurate. “Now I must assemble a force to take this petty world for me” Frost-Walker said to himself as he marked the pages in the book and rolled the scroll back up. He found an old satchel bag and put the book and scroll in it and then put it on his back. Frost-Walker trotted out of the library and closed the door. “Now where can I get out of this place?” he thought. The Ice Temple was constructed long ago not just as a palace but a fortress. It’s many intricate pathways, traps, and dead-ends made it so no mere invading force could take it easily. Frost-Walker had lived for many centuries in the Ice Temple and there were places he still did not know. But, he did remember the path from the library to the front doors. Frost-Walker began his slightly long journey to the front entrance in that time he pondered what his plan of attack would be, what beings would he summon for his army, what he did wrong in the past that led to him being frozen in stone, if Celestia had become more powerful, and many other things. The Temple was covered in ancient symbols, long forgotten family crests, and torn and tattered flags and banners of Frost-Walker’s armies of old. Frost-Walker looked among the many flags and banners, and was filled with boiling anger. He took a flag and banner down staring at the black, white, crystal, red, and other colors that covered them with the symbol of his cutie mark; a dark and powerful white and black crystal in the center. Frost-Walker furled up the flag and banner and put them in his satchel thinking sadly about all those that died at the hooves of Celestia’s armies. “I was so close and she had to destroy it. Well now, Celestia I will get closer and reach my goal of taking Equestria and destroying you!!!” Frost-Walker screamed ferociously into the hall. Frost-Walker continued to walk down the hall until he came to the front entrance of the temple. The front entrance had two great wooden doors that had many intricate locks and spells intertwined within the wood’s many cracks. “Well then I guess Celestia thinks she has bested me. I remember that day the doors broke and these are new and huge. Celestia believes she has bested me at last” Frost-Walker thought staring at the doors slightly wide eyed. Frost-Walker knew that a spell to break through this barrier would require a spell of extreme power, deep intricateness and extreme concentration. Frost-Walker observed the many locks and spells that were in the ancient wood. He positioned himself again and closed his eyes deeply. He began to chant words softly and then began to get louder and louder. His horn glowed deep and dangerous colors from white to deep cerulean.
Ancient Wood,
Spells and Locks adorned,
May you open too me,
So I can be free once more.
Celestia the liar that she is,
Should not be trusted anymore,
Trust I,
Frost-Walker the great,
For I will release thee,
From this terrible fate that you have been forced
Frost-Walker finished his chant and opened his eyes wide and with hope. Nothing happened….at first. But soon the doors began to shake and rattle violently. The many locks and spells began to unwind and disappear. Many gears and pulleys worked away and soon the doors were unlocked and Frost-Walker was happy for he knew the spell was right. “Finally I am free from this horridness” Frost-Walker screamed with cheer. He trotted over to the door and put his hoof to it and pushed for the doors were easily to unlock but very heavy to push. “Almost there” Frost-Walker said to himself as he heaved and pushed he could hear the wind and snow blow violently outside the temple. Frost-Walker opened the door big enough to get through and a giant wall of snow fell on him. “Oh Huzzah for the snow and ice I am now free from my prison of stone” Frost-Walker said proudly. He dug his way through the snow and saw all was covered in white and was so hard to see but not for Frost-Walker. Frost-Walker trotted and stomped through the snow looking out towards the valley near the entrance of the temple where the great battle was fought long ago. He was searching for an ancient black rock. Soon he found it for no snow covered it since a special spell cast by him made it easy for him to find it. “Now then how shall we begin” he thought as he trotted to the top of the black rock. Frost-Walker removed the large book and looked through the many pages searching for a conjuring spell to begin the rebuilding of his former empire. But before he could begin to rebuild his massive armies of the Great North and take Equestria with shock and awe he needed to conjure up a frightful storm. He found the perfect storm in a part of the book. Frost-Walker closed his eyes and began to chant the spell.
Black Clouds,
Dark and Dangerous,
Bring forth a lightning storm,
To conquer all ages,
Snow and Wind,
Bring forth my wrath,
For my path towards Equestria’s destruction has only just
Begun
The sky slowly became stagnant and more violent. Black clouds carrying violent storms and vortexes started to pour in towards the black rock that Frost-Walker stood upon. Wind slowly began to pick up and become fierce with every gust. The snow began to pile high in great drifts and became extremely deep. Frost-Walker knew if such a storm was created it would bring attention from eyes in Equestria but also make them fear him even more. The first phase of his dastardly plan was finished and checked but now he needed a force to conquer Equestria and shroud it in a veil of darkness. “Now let’s see a chapter on Summoning” Frost-Walker thought as he skimmed through the many pages and colorful illustrations of horrific monsters and beasts. “Ah there we are” Frost-Walker sighed looking at a page with a graphic image of a snow gobpony horde. Back during the first time Frost-Walker invaded Equestria the snow gobponies made up his rank and file. They were loyal and would not disobey a signal word of his command. Frost-Walker closed his eyes again and he began to chant his horn changing in a mixture of color from vibrant white to dark green.
Deep within the caves of ice and snow,
A rise Ponies of the Goblin Origin and the Snowed Race,
Heed the Call of Frost-Walker the great,
For now it is time to bring all to their knees
Frost-Walker looked about himself and waited. Soon he could feel a slight rumbling and then the ground began to shake violently. Deep within the Crystal Mountains were ancient mines and caves that were tirelessly worked away at by the snow gobponies. Soon enough large groups of gobponies sprung out of the earth carrying torches, pickaxes, shovels, and what other mining equipment. Their eyes were bright red more accustom to the darkness of caves than to the brightness of the outside. But many of them looked up in awe at their leader Frost-Walker.
“He’s returned” a gobpony said.
“Down with Celestia” said another.
“Huzzah for the Lord of Ice and Snow” said many.
The great snow gobpony king arose his massive size attributing to his power. He trotted forward among the ranks of his kin towards Frost-Walker on the black rock.
“Lord Frost-Walker I am the King of the Snow Gobponies. We are here to serve you my lord and bring Princess Celestia’s rule to an end” the Snow Gobpony King said with a bow. The Gobponies cheered mighty and terrifying cheers for their new leader, Lord Frost-Walker of the Great North. Frost-Walker was proud of himself for his main rank and file had been secured; he now needed to gather all his other forces to him and then the March on Equestria could begin. Frost-Walker skimmed through the many pages of the book looking at the many monsters that could do such destructive damage on the ponies of Equestria. Frost-Walker found his next piece of the puzzle; great rock giants. When Frost-Walker was encased in stone much of his army was brought down including many of the great rock giants which even then were very few in number. Know around the world, as being mighty foes it took more than a few pegasi with courage as big as the moon and hearts as strong as iron to bring one down. Frost-Walker lit his horn into a grayish tone of color as to resemble the color of the stone.
Great Giants of Stone,
May you arise from your tombs of lime and shist,
In my hour of your assistance
Frost-Walker only had to wait a small while. Even though Rock Giants were powerful and massive they were slow and rather difficult to move over long distances. Frost-Walker looked out towards the mountain sides and valley’s far beyond with his keen eyesight watching and listening. The ground rumbled and shook more violently than when the Snow Gobponies assembled into their massive size. Frost-Walker watched in the distance and could see many giant black blobs moving in the distance towards the valley of the ice temple. The great masses of stone soon lined up in ranks although few in number they still seemed grand and at large.
A great rock beast came before him. It had in its center a small deposit of gold ore. “Lord Frost-Walker I am king of the Rock Giants and I am ready to serve you” it said with a slight bow that made the ground shake. The rock giants stomped their great feet as the snow gobponies cheered for Frost-Walker. Frost-Walker now had gained his great tanks that would cross the land and stomp over those who opposed his rule. But, he still had much work to do. Again, he skimmed through the pages finding the creatures he wanted from ogres, druids, trolls, snow golems, and timber-wolves. He read the chants carefully and then closed his eyes and lit his horn. His horn turned a bright turquoise.
Oh great ogres,
Arise from your caverns,
Come forth to me,
So I can live,
For I have been freed.
Druids,
Magical Beings,
From the forests of this frosty north,
Join Me,
And we shall bring Equestria to its knees.
Trolls,
Ever so evil but clumsy,
With your great clubs and strength,
Do not dread your feet,
When you march with me.
Golems of Snow,
Hidden from other’s eyes,
Come with me,
Join me,
For we must bring terror and fright.
Timber Wolves,
Built from wood and the earth,
You Hunger for Ponies,
Join me and fill your girth.
Frost-Walker reopened his eyes and saw great masses approaching from many sides. Soon he had the kings of the ogres, druids, trolls, snow golems, and timber-wolves before him.
“We have come to serve you Lord Frost-Walker and take back Equestria for you and your might” they all said in unison. Many cheers erupted from the ranks of soldiers that were now in the valley. Many lit torches and tattered battle flags littered the great waves of soldiers. Frost-Walker smiled slightly he had done it he had built an army worthy of conquering and bringing down Celestia. But, one final piece of the puzzle had to be completed. Frost-Walker lifted his hoof and the great masses fell to into silence. Frost-Walker went to the end of the book to the most complex and deadly of spells and chants and came to a water color that made him shiver slightly. A pair of red eyes stared back at him before a snout with jagged and dangerously sharp teeth. It was an Ice Dragon an extremely powerful and deadly race of Dragon in all of Equestria. Frost-Walker believed one of the reasons that he did not conquer Equestria the first-time was because he had no proper aviation specifically dragons. He did have Pegasus snow gobponies but they did not have the same ferocity and fire power as an Ice Dragon of the Great North. He was extremely nervous, Ice Dragons were extremely temperamental and could become violent if not treated respectfully or made angry. The chant was very long and complex and was written in an ancient language that Frost-Walker barely remembered. He gulped slightly he may have been the revived Lord of the Great North and a wielder of great and powerful magic but he was very fearful of the Ice Dragons. He pressed his legs firmly on to the ground and lit his horn. He shut his eyes tight as his horn began to have lightning spark out of it and glow a ghastly blue.
Oh great Ice Dragons,
Here my call,
Frost-Walker has returned,
Celestia is weak,
I am Powerful,
I did not ask for your assistance before,
But now I need your help,
I will share in the bounty,
If you join my conquest,
From here in the Great North.
From Ancient Caverns and Mountain Tops,
Heed my call,
Equestria will now be ours.
The clouds began to swirl more violently and began to turn even darker. The wind and snow picked up even more and slashed at Frost-Walker’s soldiers as they duck their heads down. The lightning continued to radiate from his horn and his horn glowed even brighter and brighter. Frost-Walker felt himself slipping but stood stalwart even with the wind whipping him. He opened his eyes as the lightning began to subside and he looked up to the skies. He listened keenly and watched closely. The first he heard was a fearsome roar that shook the ground even from way up in the sky followed by many other roars. He then heard the gliding of many wings that sounded like scythe’s going through a field of wheat. Soon a moving cloud darker than the sky appeared and it was moving fast. As the cloud got closer it began to take a distinctive shape. Thousands upon Thousands of Ice Dragons appeared from the cloud and began to land in among the ranks of Frost-Walkers soldiers. The Ice Dragon’s slowly floated down but their wings felt like great gales and blew some of the snow gobponies off their hooves. Soon a great Ice Dragon with beautiful scales, massive wings, a powerful tail, and a black underbelly stood before Frost-Walker who was completely dwarfed by its size.
“Are you Lord Frost-Walker?” said the Ice Dragon.
“Yes I am and who might you be?” Frost-Walker asked staring into the Ice Dragon’s evil and angry red eyes.
“I am the King of the Ice Dragons. We heard your chant and have come to your aid” the Ice Dragon said.
“I thank you for that I feared you would not app-“Frost-Walker was cut short as the dragon put his face directly in front of Frost-Walker huffing smoke through his massive snout.
“Be warned you little unicorn. If you make us angry or cause my people harm you will face a power far greater than death and you will feel pain every step of the way” said the dragon before breathing a great flame from his mouth. Frost-Walker gulped slightly. The rest of the armies stood at attention in silence.
“But I will serve you until the end my Lord. I congratulate your return” said the King of the Ice Dragons with a bow. The Armies soon began to chant as the ice dragon joined the ranks of his kin. The Armies were now complete and Frost-Walker was prepared for war but he needed to train them and prepare them for battle. He may have had massive numbers on his side but his troops lacked experience. If he were to send out his troops now against Celestia’s well-trained soldiers they would be slaughtered in an instant. He raised a hoof to quiet his soldiers.
“A new power is rising. Victory is at hand” the armies began to chant again but Frost-Walker raised a hoof and they quieted “But we cannot strike Celestia yet. We must train and plan for our invasion of Equestria. Only then can we take back what is OURS!” screamed Frost-Walker. The Armies started their chant again but louder and fiercer. Frost-Walker closed the ancient book.
“Equestria will fall and all who live within it” Frost-Walker said before preparing to train his massive armies for the grand invasion of Equestria.
