Chapter 1: Offers and Secrets

It was a normal afternoon in the autumn season for the small earth pony town in Equestria. The sun shone brightly through the light blue sky and cascaded down onto the many ponies in the village, happily trotting through the town enjoying their daily lives as the cafes and shops were bustling with business.

In the many crowds of ponies flocking around town, a certain sky blue mare stood out from the organized chaos. The mare had decided to follow her way around town after finishing her weather duties for the day, which was something she took great pride in for finishing the job so quickly. She had thought about napping or maybe dropping in on her friends, but today she felt like stretching her hooves was something she wanted to do. She made her way through the mass of crowds as she trotted past the iconic sweets store in the center of the village known as Sugarcube Corner.

Rainbow Dash turned to look at the shop when something familiar caught her eye, stopping her present actions, she focused in on the store and spotted some very familiar looking ponies sitting casually on one of the few tables situated outside of the famous store. As Rainbow got closer, she could instantly recognize one of the mares who had a bright yellow coat with a famous, fiery mane. She was wearing a yellow and blue striped scarf -- which was appropriate for the time of season -- and was laughing with the other two ponies sitting around the table.

Rainbow Dash closed in on the group of ponies as she spoke up above the noise of the busy town. “S-Spitfire!?”

The yellow mare turned from the conversation at the sound of her name, she saw the cyan mare quickly approaching the table and grinned. “Hello Dash, surprised I haven’t seen you around today, take a seat,” she said as she patted the seat next to her.

Rainbow was hesitant at first, but quickly obliged, taking the free seat around the small table. Spitfire leaned over and pointed to the other two ponies currently seated at the table with them. “I’m guessing you know Soarin and and my brother Blazing Fire?”

Rainbow looked over to the two previously unseen ponies and recognized them immediately. “Yeah, I know them, how ya guys doin'?” she asked curiously.

Before any of the two stallions could conjure up a reply, Spitfire spoke up. “Well, we’re all off work today, so I thought it would be nice to take a break and explore a little. Since Ponyville has become so famous recently, being the home of you and your friends with the elements of harmony, I thought why not,” she answered, smirking slightly as she continued. “These two were only too happy to come along.”

Blazing Fire was first to retaliate a response. “Hey, I’m just here for the party,” he said, his voice like that of a drunken Manehatten pony on a night out. Soarin rolled his eyes at the silver coated stallion, only seeming to elect more giggles out of the already hyped up Blazing Fire.

Dash smiled and turned back to the fiery mare sitting opposite her, who was now holding a drink in her hoof. “So why are you guys off work?” she asked. As a major fan of the famous aerobatic team, Rainbow Dash has become quite acute at following the Wonderbolt timetable. Now being part of the academy, she also had a pretty clean idea that the members of the team were very rarely ‘on break’ without good reason.

Spitfire exchanged casual glances with the other members of the team currently seated at the table before answering the cyan mare’s question. “Well…to tell you the truth, we were just about to come and find you… seems though you found us first,” she said with a smirk before taking another sip from her drink.

Dash looked at the three ponies in astonishment. “You’re here looking... for me!?”

All the other ponies nodded in sync with each other. Dash could feel her jaw beginning to drop, parting her lips slightly as she breathed out a few inaudible words. She quickly managed to jumble her words into something understandable. “W-what for?”

Spitfire turned to Soarin, motioning quietly for the lieutenant to take charge of the current conversation. The stallion smiled and ran a hoof through his slightly mused mane. “Yes, well, a big complication has arisen,” he started.

Blazing Fire looked over at the stallion and scoffed. “A big complication? You mean more like a huge pile of horse-”

Soarin groaned, cutting his fellow Wonderbolt off. “Could you be quiet for just a few seconds!?” he asked, slightly annoyed.

Blazing Fire raised his hooves. “Woah, sorry there pickle head, I’m just sayin’,” he said with a mocking grin.

Soarin sighed and continued, “Well okay, then a big problem has come up recently. Just a few days ago, Fleetfoot and Misty Skies were practicing for the Wonderbolts next tour in the winter, but they crashed whilst doing a double helix spin and now both of them have broken wings. We could just go on the tour without them, but yesterday we got a call from the Streak brothers saying they both had caught the feather flu and wouldn't be able to make it either. Now our boss Proud Skies asked for us to round up the best flyer in this year’s academy trainees and Spitfire told us you where the top performer in her squadron."

Rainbow sat in silence for a few moments as she let the information sink in before speaking up. “So wait, are you guys asking me to become a Wonderbolt?” she asked, her excitement rising immensely.

Spitfire nodded approvingly. “Well, only for the tour, you still have a few other things left to do in the academy, but we all thought you were good enough to take on the challenge, or more I thought you were,” she said, her yellow cheeks turning the slightest shade of crimson.

Dash was now mouthing the words of ‘oh my gosh’ again and again, just audible enough for three ponies to hear. Blazing Fire turned toward his lieutenant again with a smirk. “Well done short stack, I think you broke her,” he said, muffling his chuckles.

Soarin sighed. “Can you never just use my real name?” he asked quizzically.

Blazing Fire was about to mark a response when the multicoloured mare finally spoke up, “Uh…how long is it till the next Wonderbolt tour?”

Spitfire pondered for a few moments as she put a hoof to her chin. “...It's gonna be in about 4 weeks, first one will be happening in Canterlot for the Grand Galloping Gala, we would have liked to tell you this earlier, but of course this all happened quite fast,” she pointed out, downing the last part of her drink.

Soarin looked over to Dash. “We’ll need you over in Cloudsdale tomorrow though, we’ve got to start training you for the performance.”

Dash nodded confidently and gave a salute in approval. Spitfire smirked before getting up off her current seating position as the two stallions copied her actions.

Spitfire sighed. “Well, I think it’s about time we headed out. I’ll be seeing you tomorrow, bright and early Dash,” she said with a wink, almost making Dash’s heart flutter as she felt her cheeks burn from the sudden affection.

Dash watched as the mare walked out into the bustling crowds before she flared her wings and took off into the air in a streak of fiery orange, which was soon followed by another pair of streaks as Soarin and Blazing Fire followed. Dash watched in awe at the scene before she went back to her previous thoughts.

“...I’m gonna be a Wonderbolt,” she said to herself before giving a fangirl squee as she let her mind spin.

“I’ve gotta tell my friends,” Dash thought to herself as she dashed off towards the center of town to the Golden Oaks Library.

Meanwhile, in the skies over Equestria, Spitfire and the other two Wonderbolts soared across the air towards Cloudsdale.

Spitfire had been in deep thought since she had left the small earth pony town. She had wanted the cyan mare on the team for a while now, she knew that nopony could match the austruck speed of the pegasus or even copy her signature moves. But, in her deep state of thought, a small blush grew on her face as she thought more about her secret desire for the mare.

Spitfire had always had a thing for mares, but she hadn’t ever gone out with anypony before. Despite this, she knew what a crush was when she felt it, and ever since the cyan mare had saved her life at the Cloudsdale’s best young flyer competition, Spitfire had always felt a special connection with Dash, even if she hadn’t told anypony about it before. Just then a voice spoke, cutting the Wonderbolt captain from her current thoughts.

“So do you really think she’s good enough to be on the team,” Soarin asked as he soared overhead, just a few feet above Spitfire.

Spitfire nodded. “Of course, she’s the best flyer I know,” she said with a knowing grin.

Soarin had been friends with Spitfire since they were foals and he knew when there was something else going on in Spitfire’s mind. He raised an eyebrow. “There’s something else, isn’t there...”

Spitfire’s blush seemed to intensify, which didn’t help. Soarin rolled his eyes. “I just hope you know what you're doing Spits,” Soarin cautioned.

Blazing Fire laughed mockingly. “Aww, is Soarin getting jealous of a new arrival?” he asked, raising an eyebrow as he flew just in front of the two pegasi.

Soarin rolled his eyes. “Oh not this routine again,” he grumbled.

Spitfire let a giggle as her brother continued his assault, “Haha, I remember at that nightclub when you tried to ask Fleetfoot out, and then me and Spitty found you face down in the bar singing a song about-”

Ai yai yai!” Soarin yelled whilst the other two Wonderbolts burst out in laughter as they made their way to Cloudsdale at great speed.

Meanwhile, back in Ponyville, the sun was now setting below the horizon, giving off an orange glow which made its way through the small portholes of the library. Dash was sitting in amongst her friends around the room, where she had just told them all the good news, which had earned a lot of praise.

“Oh my gosh Dashie, I’m just soooo… HAPPY FOR YOU!” Pinkie Pie hollered, catching her cyan friend in another death hug.

Dash smiled slightly, trying not to choke from the immediate lack of air. “Yeah, thanks Pinks, but if you keep doing that I’m not gonna be alive for my training tomorrow,” she said.

Twilight giggled, her horn lightning up as she used her magic to levitate the hyperactive mare away from Dash before offering her own congratulations for the new Wonderbolt. “Well done, Dash. I’m super happy for you, not to mention it will make a great report to the princess,” she said happily, levitating a quill and paper. Dash just rolled her eyes playfully at the unicorn’s antics.

Applejack nodded in approval of the unicorn’s compliment. “Well, I’m proud of ya to Dash,” she said, patting the pegasus on the shoulder.

Dash smiled towards the farm pony. “Thanks Applejack,” Dash said before trotting to the front door of the library and pushing it open, revealing the now blackened sky, the only source of light being Luna’s moon and its accompanying stars.

Before she left, the cyan mare stopped and turned around to face the rest of the ponies in the room. “Thanks for the support guys, now I’ve got to go get me some rest, I’ll see ya all later,” she said before shooting off into the sky towards her home.

Rainbow soared through the cold night sky, the feeling of the brisk air rushing through her wings, giving her a luxurious sensation of bliss as she flew up towards her signature cloud home in the sky. She opened the door and walked in, letting out a happy sigh as she lightly kicked the door shut again before trotting upstairs to her room.

Dash crashed onto her fluffy cloud bed, her mind buzzed with energy from the current day's events. Dash had never expected for something like this to happen, but was thrilled that it had. Now she could finally prove her worth as a Wonderbolt. However, a few questions still remained unanswered in the back of Dash’s mind. She knew that the Wonderbolts would have had reserve flyers in case anything like this happened, but even so, she did understand why they might have chosen someone like her. Still, she couldn’t help thinking another reason was behind it all.

Dash put the thoughts aside for now as she curled up, excited about spending her first day with her idol and hero: Spitfire…
