Scootaloo gazed at the sky; a rainbow streak tainted the clouds as Rainbow Dash flew by at shocking speeds. A familiar lavender pony struggled to keep up with the skilled flyer, her wings straining to keep her body in the sky. Scootaloo’s ears flopped down, her vision becoming blurry with tears. “It’s no fair! Twilight can fly!” The tiny filly stomped her orange hoofs into the dirt, causing large puffs of dirt and dust to fly into the air. Scootaloo vigorously shook her head, trying to forget that dreadful day…
“Rainbow, there’s no point of taking me here! I already know I can fly… I just need practice!” Scootaloo whined as she was nudged into the doctor’s office. Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes as the young filly refused to compromise.
“Kid, listen. I already know you can fly. This is just…a check up!” The older mare replied, hoping to shut the filly up. Scootaloo looked at Rainbow, still thinking this was useless, she trotted farther into the office. She took a seat unto a soft chair, her tail by her side. Rainbow on the other hand walked up to the front desk, telling the secretary that she had an appointment. Scootaloo dozed off, her head falling as her eyes closed. “Scoot, Scoots! Scootaloo, Wake up!” The filly snapped awake, confused at first. Realizing where she was, she sighed. “Hey kid, let’s go the doctor’s waiting.” Rainbow grunted impatiently. Scootaloo followed the blue mare into a small white room. She was told to sit unto a cold, metal bed-like object. The doctor was a tan unicorn, with a pale yellow mane. Rainbow whispered something to the stallion, the words being inaudible to the orange filly. Nodding once, the doctor examined Scootaloo, paying close attention to her tiny wings. The doctor gave Rainbow a doubtful look. He motioned Rainbow to follow him… After a couple of minutes, they returned. Scootaloo looked at them curiously.
“So, can I start flying!?” Scootaloo exclaimed, thinking she already knew the answer. The doctor gave a weak smile at the filly before he walked out; telling Rainbow that they’re check up was over. Scootaloo leaped off the metal mattress, looking more than glad to start walking. As they walked out, Rainbow stopped suddenly, her eyes oddly sad.
“Kid…Listen… Flying isn't everything…So-”
“Rainbow, come on! We both know that flying to both of us is everything! Soon I’ll soar through the sky with you!”
“Scoots…that won’t happened...You…Can't fly.”
Scootaloo closed her eyes, letting that memory fade into the back of her mind. Two older mares landed in front of her, one of them landing perfectly landing on all four hooves. The other mare clumsily landed on her behind, her wings folding onto her back. Rainbow chuckled at Twilight’s unskilled landing. Rainbow yawned as she stretched her wings.
“Well, I better get going, Applejack needs me.” Rainbow said her farewells before bolting off. Twilight waved until the rainbow mare disappeared into the clouds. Twilight was about to go to until she noticed Scootaloo was acting rather…sad.
“Scootaloo, are you..okay?” Twilight asked softly as she bowed her head down to look at the filly’s face. Scootaloo sniffed and wiped her eyes.
“Twilight…why can't I fly?” Twilight stepped back, shocked by the filly’s question. Twilight pondered for a moment, unsure how to answer.
“Well…you know how everyone has their special talents. I guess…yours doesn't have to do with flying.” Twilight answered the question with delicacy. Scootaloo shook her head with her eyes clenched shut.
“But, WHY!? I WANT to fly! I NEED to fly!” Scootaloo screamed, tears now freely flowing down her cheeks. Twilight smiled softly at the filly, wrapping her wing around her tiny body. Scootaloo buried herself into the soft feathers.
“Shhh… The answer will come one day… Just not today.” Twilight whispered to the filly, soothing her down.
“But… Why?” Scootaloo sniffed. Twilight didn’t provide an answer; she only made her wing hug tighter on the broken filly. “I just want an answer Twilight…Can't you give me that?” Scootaloo sighed as more tears streamed down her face. “Can’t you give me that?” Twilight shook her head slowly as she began to wrap both of her wings around the filly.
“Scootaloo, some answers you have to find yourself.” Scootaloo tensed up as rage filled her heart.
“I CAN'T FLY, I'M AN ORPHAN, AND NOW I HAVE TO FIND MY OWN ANSWERS!” Scootaloo snapped as she tried to get out of Twilight’s grasp, only to fail and bury herself deeper into the hug. Twilight closed her purple eyes as she thought for a moment.
"Scootaloo, listen. Everything right now may seem wrong-" Scootaloo cut Twilight off by burying her face into the lavender mare's chest. Twilight smiled at the sight and used her hoof to gently soothe the filly by petting her head. "Everything will be right soon..." Scootaloo looked up and wiped her tears away...
"Rainbow said the same thing... But then she stopped helping." Scootaloo growled. Twilight shushed the filly and smiled,
"I'm not Rainbow am I? A princess never lies, does she?" Twilight grinned. Scootaloo couldn't help but giggle as Twilight showed of her "princess" loyalty.
"Okay, okay! I trust you." Scootaloo smiled as Twilight did a Fluttershy "yay!"
"Now that you trust me, I promise to thy Scootaloo that her life will be better once, I, Princess Twilight Sparkle fixes it!" Twilight held her head up high, a smile never leaving her face. Scootaloo laughed as Twilight tried to act royal.
"You're one odd princess!" Scootaloo laughed. Twilight frowned but then giggled along with Scootaloo. Twilight nuzzled the filly, and replied,
"That wasn't very nice to say to a princess! Be prepared to be banished to the MOOOON!" Twilight roared. Scootaloo screams and then giggled as she was taken by twilight's magic and thrown high into the air, only to be caught by a friendly, lavender mare. Scootaloo laughed,
"Going to the moon is fun!" as she was thrown into the air again and caught again by a smiling Twilight. Scootaloo motioned the mare to stop and then asked,
"Twilight, why are you helping me?" Twilight smile faded but quickly returned as tickled Scootaloo.
"Who wouldn't want to help this little, fun filly!" Scootaloo laughed loudly and squirmed awkwardly under Twilight's grasp. This was just the start of a journey that will lead to many broken promises and broken dreams... But everything in the beginning seems happy…Even when the ending is hell.
