A train called the Equestrian Express chugs along a railroad set course for Manehattan. The morning sun is rising over the horizon and inside the train we find our first character, Chris. He is a pegasus with a navy blue coat and a black/blue mane. He just finished college and is on his way to go settle down in Manehattan.

It is early morning but Chris cannot sleep, he lets out a brief yawn and opens his binder entitled College Memories. He flips through the pages looking at pictures he had taken at his college. Pictures of happy and sad times, he had pictures of any occasion you could think of except for one. He never found his special somepony, he was always too busy participating in flying tournaments to really find interest in love. Flying was all he really ever knew and he didn't plan on changing. He closed his binder and tucked it inside his saddlebag when the Express goes to a halt. Chris looks outside his window to see that he had arrived at Manehattan. He put on his saddlebag, grabbed his things, and got off the train.

Two Years Later

It was a bright and sunny day in the land of Equestria, and Chris the pony knew it, he could feel the bright rays of the summer sun beating off his wing, there was morning dew on the grass, and the cheery chirping of birds in the air. Chris decided to go for a morning fly around town, he stretched his wings and took off, he flew straight up into the clouds, and started soaring.  He could feel the wind flowing through his mane. He had always been a talented flyer. He flew over to the nearby cafe for a quick drink, but then noticed a crowd of ponies moving towards something in the plaza. Chris flew up to get a better look at what was up ahead, and to his surprise he saw a stage.

There was a mumbling in the crowd as to what this was all about, but nopony knew for sure what was going on. Then, all of a sudden a female pegasus walked on stage, Chris’ eyes lit up,  she had a gorgeous rainbow mane and beautiful baby blue wings. Chris wanted to continue his morning flight, but decided to listen to what she had to say.

She said, ”Mares and gentlecolts my name is Rainbow Dash, I am here to speak on behalf of the princess, we need you to help us fight in our war, we are in battle with the griffons across the seas and we are in need of recruits. We need all the help we can get, so please sign up today!” Everypony really didn’t want to get involved and left. Most of the crowd didn’t care at all. Rainbow dash looked at everypony leaving, and sighed,

“Nopony cares" She said

Chris couldn’t bear to see her that sad. As much as Chris wanted to enjoy his summer, he went up to the stand where the sign up sheets were and said, “I’d like to sign up please.”  She immediately  turned around and smiled at him, she had him sign a couple of papers, then looked up at him.

"What's your name?” Asked Rainbow Dash.

"Chris, well my real name is Lightning Clash but my friends call me Chris. It's kinda' like a joke" He replied.

Rainbow Dash looked up at him for a second, then smiled

"Alright Chris, I just want you to know how thankful I, er...we, are to have you join the army, we've been to 3 towns so far and nopony has signed up."

Chris looked at her, "Really? I thought more ponies would like to sign up,"

Rainbow shook her head "I thought so too, but here in Equestria there aren't many disputes." She chuckled "After all it is our job to love, and tolerate.”

"Yeah, I guess you're right" Chris replied.

Chris sighed, ” Well, when should I be here tomorrow?”

“0800 sharp, ‘kay Chris? We're headed to ponyville, where I live"

“Sure,” Chris replied, “see ya later.”

Chris then turned around spread his wings and took off fast as lightning.

“Wow” said Rainbow “not a bad flyer... we could use a pegasus like that."

Chris flew back to his house, landed at the doorstep, and went inside, he sprawled across his bed and sighed.

“Man, I totally just joined the army because of a pegasus, but she’s so.... ugh well I might as well go for a fly around town again to clear my mind.”  Chris said.

Flying always helped when he needed to clear his mind. Chris walked outside and once again spread his wings and took off " Man, I just moved here too, maybe this won't be as bad as it seems," Chris thought to himself, "... maybe..."
