“But kid, you had potential!” The blue Pegasus scrunched her nosed and hissed, locking her eyes onto the helpless mare in front of her.
“I, I know. I’m- I-“
“Don’t do the whole ‘innocent stuttering’ thing with me, okay?”
“…I’m sorr-“
“You had a chance but you never took it!”
“Just give me on-“
“I’m sorry, Scoot…” She croaked.
“I’m done with you.”
“No but please!-” She pleaded.
“No but’s! You’re a grown mare now; you should’ve dealt with your own problems years ago. Goodbye Scootaloo, try to live a nice life without me.”
And with that, Rainbow Dash took off away from the lonely and feeble Scootaloo, left to nothing but her own woeful thoughts. She stared at the illuminated sky, tears welling in her eyes as she managed to choke back a scream for her to stay, but from her harsh words, there was not a chance she could possibly confront her again. She watched as her fillyhood idol descended away from her in disappointment, her figure getting smaller and smaller as she fluttered quicker into the distance. She watched as she flew, so gracefully without even trying.
The years of her practise, the days she spent holding Scootaloo in her hoof as she helplessly tried to flap her wings. She was just a filly, so why would you bother learning to fly when you’ve been taken under the wing of Equestria’s best athlete? I mean it was obvious what she was going to grow up to be, her cutie mark would be almost identical to Rainbow Dash’s and she’d grow up to be just like her; living as a member of the Wonderbolts. She couldn’t fly, but hey, she was just a filly; she didn’t need to learn just now. It could wait… right?
She slowly turned her head to face her wings; she could’ve ripped them out of their sockets with frustration at this point. She flapped them hopelessly, remembering her trouble-free fillyhood she had. Nothing mattered, and she knew she’d grow up to find her destiny.
She tucked her wings back in to her shoulder blades and stared at her cutie mark; her orange cutie mark, the cutie mark of no meaning. She told herself every time she saw the light of day she had one, it just wasn’t visible, yes? Everypony knew, including herself, that she was in fact a pony without a destiny. But wouldn’t that be positive for you? I mean, you weren’t stuck with a talent you had to follow for your entire existence, right? Well, unfortunately for poor Scootaloo, things don’t run like that around Equestria, and being a grown mare without a cutie mark… well, you’re worthless among everypony. You want to be different? Good luck trying to be accepted by youth nowadays.
All of these thoughts and memories destroyed her sanity, her mind corrupted with sorrow; she fuelled with anger and in that moment, her heart cracked. She snapped her head back and howled at to Luna’s dusk. The scream she released, the painful, blood curdling scream, was still not heard by anypony.
Nopony ever heard Scootaloo.
As a few, dreadful minuted passed, she smiled. Ridiculous, huh, but that’s right; she smiled. Tears still flooding down her cheeks, she hadn’t smiled in so long, she forgot how it felt. It felt like… like her filly-hood. The tiny grin that spread across her face was one of the most horrid, painful moments of her life; for this was the smile before last take-off. She sighed, ready to say her last goodbyes.
“Hey, Rainbow Dash,” She sniffled.
“I… I’ve learnt a lot from you in the past, y’know…” She started.
“But the most recent, most important message I’ve learnt from you is this…” Inhaling a large breath, she prepared her last speech.
“Dreams never come true, dreams don't work like they used too. Neither do wishes, the wish on a star; a myth, along with my fate and destiny. If only I could've gone back, Dash, If only I could've changed something. Maybe then the weights would've lifted, maybe then it wouldn't have to end like this..." She looked at the crescent moon, blinking and smiling the tears out of her eyes.
“So, I-I guess this is it,” She softly laughed.
“M- My… last take off.” She croaked, fluttering the tears back into her eyes.
She stretched her head over the cloud and looked down below her; so many bitter ponies walking carelessly by. She blinked the few droplets of salty tears from her eyes and watched as they fell. They fell one by one, and she counted the seconds they took before they hit the cemented ground. She deeply inhaled in; slowly opening her eyelids as she exhaled out once more.
“I’ll be flying with you soon, Rainbow Dash. Just you wait.” She silently cried, taking a step towards the edge of the cloud she was abandoned on, staring at Luna’s night sky for the very last time.
“I promise…” She wept, choking on her words.
Locking her wings by her side, she took a step off the cloud and soon enough, her journey had begun; her last take-off. In just mere seconds, Scootaloo would get what she always wanted. She faced her back to the abyss and stretched her stomach to the night, squeezing her eyes shut and tucking her hooves to her chin.
The fall lifted the heavy weights off her chest she’d been carrying for years, if only, she wished, if only she could’ve had that feeling before, life would’ve been worth living.
And just like that, Scootaloo’s last take off had come to an end. The once feeble and lonely Scootaloo got what she wanted; a time to be at peace. Her heart mended, her life vanished, but most importantly; the woe and sorrow was gone. The physical sound of her passing was cringe-worthy, but I guess for her it didn’t matter. Nopony bothered to check on the lifeless Pegasus.
They saw her fall, they saw her pass, but there was one thing that stayed in common; there was one thing that never changed:
Nopony ever heard Scootaloo.
