One: That's What Dads Are For
If you were to look at Pinkie Pie Humm and Amethyst Star Humm, you would see some alikes. For instance, their coat was pink. Otherwise, you would predict foolishly that they are not sisters and most likely enemies. That is the problem with you. You jump to conclusions too quick. Who knows, maybe a slob is a fashion freaks best friend. Though I don't see how that would work out. But enough about other topics. You didn't come here to hear about how you judge too quick and with no wisdom. You came to hear the story about Zecora, Pinkie, and Amethyst. And I came to tell you that. So enough about me. Your story is waiting.
Mr. Humm never wanted daughters. "Who needs daughters?" Mr. Humm would say to his drunken friends, the ones who weren'tt busy checking mares out or laying passed out," All they would do is gossip over fashion and makeup junk, begging us for money." His friends would laugh in agreement, having no idea what he had said. Mrs. Humm, a fine lady of drinking, was ready to divorce her husband when the doctor told of twins coming. Mr. Humm was ready to see his two twin boys. Yet things quickly turned into a disaster.
"It is twin mares!" the nurse announced, bringing in the babies. Mr. Humm stared at the nurse.
"Mares? MARES? Not a single colt?!" Mr. Humm stomped his hoof. The nurse looked at him in question.
"Did you not have your babies checked? They are mares through and through. Mr. Humm was turning red. He was betting a good amount of money that it would be boys. And more importantly, his drinking money. The money he treasured so much. All of it was wasted. Mrs. Humm just sat there, too exhausted to listen. Until Mr. Humm attacked.
"YOU FILTHY LITTLE-" Nurses all around yanked the fat colt away from the frightened mare. Her nose was bleeding. An assistant grabbed tissues for her. Mrs. Humm, though, was too busy retaliating.
"Don't you complain! Those mares are our fillies," Mrs. Humm scolded. Mr. Humm broke free of the nurses and punched Mrs. Humm in the face.
"YOUR fillies. The fillies are not mine. They are yours."
Not too long after, the two were divorced. Mrs. Humm stopped drinking. She did for two reasons. Her daughters and the fact that her money had been stolen by Mr. Humm's new gang. Mrs. Humm tried to support her daughters, but was unsuccessful. In order to keep them from starving to death, Mrs. Humm did the last thing she wanted to do. At only the age of two rotations, Pinkie and Amethyst Humm were sent to Longmire Orphanage.
Julie Ann, owner of Longmire Orphanage, cared for the children and treated them like they were- unwanted orphans. The food and other needs was well, even higher than most standard orphanages. But she looked at the children like flies on the wall. So she spent most of her working time in her office, filling out papers and assigning chores for the orphans. She was a bright mare. Her mane was a luscious golden curls. Her coat was shimmering snow. And her cutie mark was an orphanage building. She wore three earings for each ear. Fake eyelashes, following the fashion trend, put the spotlight on her beauty. She was a lady every colt loved at sometime after meeting her. Julie Ann loved having boys falling for her, pleading to ask her to marry them. Julie Ann, as we said, was a smart mare. She knew only the right colt could do. She had yet to find this colt.
Amethyst found favor in Julie Ann's eyes. Her brightness was something no other pony could match to. She was not a fly on the wall. She was a cat, to Julie Ann, a cat who warmed her soul on a cold winter night. Julie Ann decided to personally train Amethyst. Amethyst was okay with this. As long as her sister was not forgotten.
Pinkie, from her loyal sister commands, was sent to a special school that taught earth ponies magic. Pinkie enjoyed this school. She had fun practicing her skills on unwilling victims at the orphanage. Julie Ann tried her best not to lose her temper, but sometimes it was very diffucult. Especially if it was on her. But Julie Ann was not entirely heartless, and for the sake of Amethyst, Julie Ann jept her cool. She found out the benefit of that, for soon enough, Pinkie stopped her tricks. Unless it was Amethyst.
Amethyst stared out the window. Next to her were three hideous colored gems. Julie Ann challenged her to change the color of the gems. But even after practicing for hours on end, Amethyst could not crack the code. She had given in. Pinkie came in, bouncing as usual. Amethyst looked over.
"Hi Amy! Enjoying nature, I see!" Pinkie greeted happily. She bore her ever-friendly smile that lightened even the brightest room up. Amethyst smiled slightly at the sight of her cheerful twin.
"Not really. I can't figure out this spell. I've been trying, but nothing works!" Amethyst explained. Pinkie literally bounced over. She put her hoof around Amethyst's shoulder.
"Amy, as long as I have known you, you don't give up without a fight. Don't let frustration stop you now!"Pinkie paused. "Speaking of which, I feel really bad for everyone I tricked. You were right, it isn't fun. How can I make it up to them? I've been trying to find something all day. Should I do a party, give them a card, hug them, definitely not kiss them! Ugh, especially Skunk!" Amethyst giggled at her sister.
"I think a party would work the best." But this didn't satisfy Pinkie. In fact, her problem was doubled.
"But what kind? Woukd I serve anything? What about presents, would I give them? I know I wouldn't recieve them, this is a sorry party, not a birthday party."
"Couldn't you serve that brew you made for me? I remember it tasting like all my favorite things."
"Yes! I could do that! Oh, thank you Amy! Good luck! Remember, magic comes from within!" It was a saying the two had. Magic came from within. Yet it was the missing puzzle piece for Amethyst, just like Pinkie's brew was the missing piece for her party. Amethyst levitated the gems again. Focusing, Amethyst closed her eyes. She dug into her mind. She felt hot sparks touch her. Her muscles ache. Don't stop yet, Amethyst thought. She pictured all the things she loved. Pinkie Pie. Julie Ann. Learning. But most of all, her mother. Her horn burned with energy. It rose from her hooves and shot out of her horn. There was a sharp ring, and her horn died down. The gems dropped to the ground. But they were not the gems no one wanted. They shone a brilliant silver blue. Amethyst's eyes widen. This was what she was working for. Finally, she had completed the spell. The spell filled her.The energy. She looked at the gems. Everyone deserved a gem like this. This was what she wanted to do. Forever. Just like magic, she felt something on her blank flank. There beamed three silver blue gems, forever on her flank. Her cutie mark! She had never thought much of her absence of a cutie mark. But now, it was everything. Amethyst ran out of the room. She could hear fun music from Pinkie's party. She was quick at setting up. Amethyst was halfway when she slammed into a pink pink pony covered in streamers and balloons.
"Pinkie!"
"Amethyst!"
"You won't believe what happened! I have my cutie mark!" Both girls spoke in unison. The two laughed, looking at the cutie marks. Three gems. Three balloons. They really were alike. They were twins, no matter what.
