It was a glorious and sunny day in Ponyville. Ponies were happily gathering in their small groups and just generally enjoying themselves. Fillies and colts were playing games, passing the time, and having fun, whilst mares and stallions were doing the things they loved best, which was usually identifiable by their cutie mark.
Twilight and her friends were searching through books in the library and talking to each other, just doing what friends typically do. And the Cutie Mark Crusaders were also there, looking through the shelves trying to find a book that may interest them.
Well, at least, two of them were.
Scootaloo, standing only a couple of meters away from her idol, Rainbow Dash, was once again attempting to fly. She was trying to impress Dash, since she aspired to be just like her when she grew up. However, Scootaloo hadn't completely figured out how to use her wings... she jumped off from the second floor, opened her wings, but sadly ended up crashing into one of the bookshelves, knocking it over.
"SCOOTALOO! ARE YOU OKAY?!" yelled Rainbow Dash.
"Uh, yeah I-I'm fine." the young filly replied.
"My shelf! I need to re-organize these books into alphabetical order now! And then into color, and then into size!" Twilight cried.
"Uh well, we'll help ya Twilight!" said Apple Bloom, who had conveniently moved out the way seconds before the shelf had collapsed.
"Yeah! Cutie Mark Crusader book organizers!" smiled Sweetie Belle.
The three fillies rushed towards the books, reading the titles carefully and then putting them back on the shelf, which Rainbow Dash and Applejack had put back up.
One of the books looked quite worn down, the cover was scratched and ripped, most of the pages were missing and the title of the book was barely understandable.
"Twilight? What's this book about?" asked Sweetie Belle.
"Sweetie Belle, darling! Stay away from that book! It has dust on it, and it's ever so dirty!" said Rarity, who was now dusting the book, trying to get rid of the dirt and dust on it.
"Uh, I don't think I've ever seen that book before, Sweetie, can I see it please?" replied Twilight.
Reluctantly, Sweetie handed the book to Twilight, who opened it and began to scan the pages for things that may give a clue to what the book is about. The pages were as thin as an eyelash and the words were printed ever so small. It was hard to make out what most of them said. No wonder nopony had noticed this book before, it was so difficult to understand.
"Hmm" said Twilight "These subjects are very strange... it mentions things like the 'Chaos Staff' and the 'Pendant of Misery' in here. I've never heard of these artifacts before..."
"May-Maybe we shou-" began Fluttershy, but she was interrupted by Pinkie Pie before she could finish her sentence.
"Maybe it's a book that changes every time you open the cover! It's a magic book! That's so amazing! I've never heard of a magic book before, maybe that's because it changes every time you open the cover, wow, I want to tell absolutely everypony about thi-" Pinkie was blabbering on again, so Applejack stuck her hoof over Pinkie's mouth.
"Were ya'll about to say somethin' Fluttershy?" she asked
"Uh... I was going to s-say... maybe we should ask P-Princess Celestia?" whispered Fluttershy
"Hm, good idea, Fluttershy. I'll get Spike to send her a letter. SPIKE!" yelled Twilight "Send a letter to Princess Celestia asking her about the book, please."
"I'll get right on it Twilight!" replied her faithful, scaly friend.
