Once upon a time, there was a magical land called "Equestria." The subjects of the land were Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi, who all lived in peace and harmony. Equestria was ruled by two fair princesses. The elder used her unicorn powers to raise the moon and begin her magical night. The younger raised the sun at dawn and brought forth the sunny day. Thus, the sisters retained harmony throughout the land and cared for their subjects.

One day, the younger sister became envious of her sister's beautiful night. Ponies often stargazed and watched fantastic fireworks during the darkness. However, in the day time, ponies rarely looked at the sky during the day, for the sun blinded and burned anypony who gazed at it for too long. She would often spend hours in solitude, only coming out to raise the sun.

Noticing her sister's agony, the elder tried to reason with her. But the jealousness had been festering for too long. The younger sister raised the sun in front of the moon, and the entire land was suddenly encased in a blistering hot day. The sun princess was no longer herself. In her place was a wicked mare of brightness: Blinding Sun!

She vowed to encase the world in an eternal day, and paid no mind to what would become of her subjects. Reluctantly, her sister turned to her only weapon, the Elements of Harmony! Using the element's powers, she defeated her younger sister, and banished her to the sun as punishment.

And so, the lunar princess took over the responsibility for both sun and moon, and harmony has been retained for generations since.

A large, brown book with a silver unicorn on the cover was shut. A light gray alicorn mare with white hair gazed out her window and into the starry night. "I just know I've read about the 'Elements of Harmony' somewhere," she said to herself. "But where…?"

Prologue

As the gray and white mare walked down the roads of Canterlot the next day, she pondered over what she had read about. Elements of Harmony. Elements of Harmony…

"Look, there's Lily Note! Hey! Lily Note!!"

Lily Note jerked out of her stupor. In front of her were a unicorn, a pegasus, and an earth pony. All three were carrying a present on their backs. The unicorn mare had a dark brown coat with black hair in ponytails, and an open book for a cutie mark. The pegasus was white with a curly rainbow mane and tail. She had a plate of paint on her flank. Lastly, the earth pony had dark brown hair, a rainbow headband, a caramel coat, and a basketball with a musical note behind it for a cutie mark.

"Lily, we've been looking all over for you," said the pegasus. "Yeah," interjected the earth pony. "Where have you been?" The unicorn said, "Carla is having a little get-together at the Royal Gardens. Wanna come?" All three mares smiled, and the earth pony offered her hoof.

Lily Note blinked a few times. "I'm sorry girls, but I have to see my mentor. If I can, I'll try to make it." With that said, Lily cantered past them, running towards the large castle.

The pegasus giggled for a minute. The earth pony looked at her. "What's so funny, Sophia?" she asked. Sophia halted her giggling. "Well, I told you she would probably be seeing her precious mentor." She flew into the air and went upside down, still having her giggling fit.

The unicorn nonchalantly caught the present with her magic before it hit the ground. "We should get going, girls. Sondra, do you think you could try to get Sophia down?" Sondra, the earth pony, said cheerfully, "Sure, Alicia!" She jumped as high as she could and got a hold of Sophia's tail. Sophia stopped her giggling and let out an "OW!" as she and Sondra came back down to earth. She instinctively started flapping her wings so they didn't get hurt.

The trio then set off towards the castle after Lily, all three of them giggling and taking happily.

Princess Luna was in her personal study, pacing in front of a large stained glass window. It depicted her defeating Blinding Sun, the villain from the old fairy tale. She often gazed at it, wishing to destroy the window. Why had she not stopped the glass cutters when they had proposed the idea? All it did was remind her of her failure as a big sister, and made her heart ache for her little sister, Princess-

Her pacing was cut short by a rapid knocking at her door. She opened the door. "Yes?" A unicorn guard was standing outside. He took off his helmet respectively. "Your highness, Lily Note is here, and she wishes to speak with you," he told her.

Luna suddenly became a bit happier. It always did her good to see her student. Lily Note had to be the most gifted unicorn she had ever seen. She had aced her final exam to get into Luna's magic school in the blink of an eye. Lily was also a trusted confident, who knew a fair few secrets of what happened inside the castle.

Luna went down the long hallway that lead to the back of her throne room. She could hear Lily chatting with one of her guards, talking about the Winter Festival the day after tomorrow. But as the princess got closer, she could detect just a hint of worry in Lily's voice. It was very subtle, something only an alicorn's ears could pick up. She started to worry a little herself. If Lily was anxious about something, it was best to find out right away.

As soon as Lily saw Princess Luna step out from behind her throne, she hastily said, "Good day." to the guard and hurried over. Luna signaled him to leave, and waited until he had trotted out to say, "May I help you, Lily Note?"

Lily bit her lip. "Luna," she began, "I have a feeling that Blinding Sun will return the day after tomorrow. What should I do?
