Rainbow Blitz, for one, was not happy with him. Klutzy had tried so hard to please him, had worked tirelessly, but… Blitz was not happy with him. The last words said to him were angry ones. To be fair, it was a big favor to give him a weather team job after being let go from the postal service. And he promised to work extra hard because his friend had done him that favor. But Blitz wasn’t ever happy with his work. He kept getting frustrated or mad. Klutz would work even harder, which was what he was taught was the way to earn a pony’s respect and friendship. But, for some reason, Blitz would get even madder. So he’d work harder.
Over and over, he kept saying, “Klutz, it’s not a question of effort...”
And then, one day, not so long ago, Klutzy was helping Blitz arrange a welcome home banner for his coltfriend Applejack, and… Klutzy had Klutz’d it up. It went from a mishung banner to a storm destroying most of city hall. And so once again, he’d been let go, and suddenly the question of where the next batch of muffins was coming from was not a rhetorical one.
Klutzy frowned at his reflection. It was the third job he’d had in the last two months. Ponyville was a small town. Smaller still when you were a closet colt-cuddler. And smaller, even still, when you were a single dad.
He sighed and leaned his head against the mirror, his breath fogging up the glass. Looking up, he could barely seen his own eyes. His crossed eyes that caused him so much grief. His name wasn’t actually Klutzy, it was Klitzy, but he had been called Klutzy so often from an early age that he just decided to own it.

He turned to see his teenaged son, Kinky, smiling at him.
“Shouldn’t you still be in bed?” He asked with a smirk. “It’s the weekend! You should be sleeping in.”
The unicorn colt jumped over with a grin. “And miss sending you off at sunrise for your first day at Sugarcube Corner? Perish the thought, Dad.”
“It’s not even like there was a sun to wake you up…” He stopped when he realized his son was staring at him, brow suddenly creased in concentration. “What?”
“Your tie is crooked. Hold on, I’ll get it.”
Klutzy smiled and stared up at the ceiling as his son adjusted his bow tie magically. His son was almost as tall as him now, with the same shade of mane as his father but a pale purple coat making him stand out. And his horn, of course. And his eyes weren’t...
“You’re going to knock’em dead, Dad. I know it.” He smiled, nuzzling his dad on the cheek. “You are the muffin king, after all.”
Klutzy turned back to the mirror, frown returning. “King of ordering, not of making…”
“Not yet, but, if anyone can turn you into a muffin baking master, it’s the Cakes. And Mr. Berry, of course.”
“Yep.” He smiled. “Mr. Berry says the town hasn’t seen the best of me yet. He thinks I can do this.”
“You CAN do this. Remember what I always say Dad…” Kinky took a breath. “I’m good enough…”
Klutzy rolled his eyes but joined along: “I’m smart enough…”
They said in unison: “And Celestia dang it, Ponies like me!”
They collapsed into laughter, and hugged one another. After a moment, Klutzy went to pull away but found Kinky clinging on a little longer. Klutzy sighed. “You’re so silly, Kinky.”
Disengaging, Kinky shrugged. “But it’s true, Dad. We’re going to celebrate tonight, I just know it.” Kinky smiled. “I believe in you.”
Klutzy blushed and looked away. “You know, it should be me giving you this speech… a Dad shouldn’t need a pep up talk from his son.”
Kinky shrugged. “You’re special, Dad. One day the whole town’s going to understand it the way I do.” He looked up at his father. “Especially Mr. Shine.”
There was a moment of silence. They stared at one another, smiles gone.
“Are you really okay with… with me being the way I am?”
Groaning, Kinky turned away and kicked a chair. “Daaaad, not this again. Your eyes are part of what makes you special, not… whatever you think of them.”

Kinky’s face went carefully neutral. He looked out the window. “Gosh, it’s really coming down. You’re going to need your umbrella. I’ll get it.” He trotted towards the umbrella stand near the door.
Despite his son’s feelings, Klutzy’s eyes were an impairment. He had trouble with depth perception, and often his clumsiness was a result of him thinking an object was in one place when in fact it was just a little bit off. But he had compenstated in other areas over the course of his life, namely, in the reading of other ponies’ faces, to accurately judge just how upset he was making them with his clumsiness.
And he could tell Kinky was upset, but he wasn’t sure why. He quietly followed his son. “I wasn’t talking about my eyes, you know.”
“It’s okay.”
“I was talking about me being… You know.”
“Oh.” Kinky blushed, pulling the umbrella out with his magic. “Dad, whoever you love is your business.”

Klutzy opened his mouth, and then closed it. He muttered. “It’s just complicated, that’s all.”
Glaring, Kinky crossed his hooves. “No it isn’t. Blitz loves Applejack, and it’s no secret Harpsy and Babar live together-”
“It’s complicated, Kinky. Adult stuff.” Klutzy looked down, kicking the ground. “Some ponies don’t approve.”
“Buck them.”
“Kinky!”

You should be HAPPY dad, and if it’s a stallion that works for ya, you should GO for it. ” He snorted. “I AM mad at that stupid Blitz for firing you, even if you did mess up the banner for Applejack. He didn’t care at all. He told me so.”
The rain continued to fall on their small home. Klutzy took his son’s hoof and smiled. “She and I just wanted the best for you. A happy life. A normal one.”
Kinky stared at his hoof, his father’s hoof wrapped around it. It was almost the same size now. There were so many things he felt, that he wanted to say.
But all he said was, “It’s not a normal life, but it is a happy one.”
His father’s smile fell.

Klutzy sighed, reaching for a sponge. “Everything was going so well at first… I just had to work the register, and tell people about muffins. It was a dream job, even though I kept pressing the wrong buttons…”

His father shrugged. “After I messed up a few transactions at the register, I just started doing it in my head. And it was great. I talked to ponies, I told them how good the muffins were, and if they didn’t like muffins, how the other stuff was also good… and Mr. Berry was nice, and the cakes were nice…and the customers seemed to like me, they were smiling and laughing, I even got a tip, can you imagine that? Kinky shook his head. “Dad, this all sounds great! I don’t-”

“But it was in front of Prince Shine, Kinky. He saw it all.I dropped a muffin on his head!”
