Chapter 1: One Year
Fog. Thick heavy fog that surrounded the area. You couldn’t see more than three feet in front of you. I was walking in this fog hoping to find somepony else in this fog. But there was no pony else here. As I walked further into the fog, I started to see something in the distance. As I walked closer to it, it started to look clearer.
It was a door.
However there was something weird about it. The door did not look like normal doors. It was a blue door with strange designs on it. I looked around me, there was nothing else. No buildings, no roads, no ponies. Just me and this strange door. I lift my hoof and touched the door. A white light engulfed me and I felt like my surroundings changed.
When the white light went away, I saw that I was not in the fog anymore. I was in a room. The design of the room was very fancy. It was a purple room with exquisite paintings on the wall. The floor was very soft and there was also a weird design on it. Looking around the room more I saw that there was a table with some very expensive wine on it. A piano, and some purple couches.
On one of the couches, however, there was someone there. It was not a pony, but a human. It was a man. He was sitting on the couch with a cane in his hands. He was wearing a black suit and was looking down with his eyes closed. He was very old and also he had a long nose. Sitting beside him was a pony. She was red unicorn with long, fluffy, white and red mane and tail. Her cutie mark showed a book with cards surrounding it. The man sitting chuckled a bit before speaking.
“Welcome to the Velvet Room,” He said looking up. “Well, it seems we have a new guest with us today. My name is Igor, i am delighted to meet you.”
He moved a hand forward, signaling me to sit in the couch in front of him. I sat down and spoke to him.
“Where am I,” I asked.
“This is the Velvet Room,” he responded. “A place that exists between dream and reality, time and matter. Only so few can enter here. The only ones who can enter are those who are bound by a contract.”
He snapped his fingers and a piece of paper formed in front of me. It read: I hereby agree to take responsibility for my actions and choices. There was a place for me to sing. Igor took out a pen had set it on the table. I used my horn to levitate the pen and I signed my name.
When I was done he took the paper back and said, “Very well, Nightshade. Hold on to this.”
He waved his hand and a key magically formed in his hand. “This key will allow you to enter the Velvet room any time you wish.” He set it on the table. I lifted it up and put it in one of the pockets of my vest.
Igor looked at me and said, “Now you must return to your world. But before you do, there is someone else I would like for you to meet.”
He turned his head and looked at the mare next to him. “This is my assistant, Roseblade. A resident here just like yourself.”
She looked at me and said, “I am Roseblade. My job is to assist you on your journey that lies ahead.”
Igor spoke up, “Now you must be going. Till we meet again.”
My vision started to get hazy as I passed out.

My eyes shot open. I must have fallen asleep. I started to wonder where I was and why I was moving. Then little by little, my memory started to come back. I was on a train to Ponyville to meet my sister. I remembered that I had to leave Canterlot due to a misunderstanding with a foreclosure on my home.
When my father heard about this he took it up with the princess herself. My family always had ties with the royalty, mostly because my family would take a job as a guard or a cook or an adviser or something along those lines. After about a week or so my father said that the princess would look into it. However, if all goes well, it will still take about a year before I can move back home. So he sent a letter to my sister, and she said I could stay with her.
But as the train moved, I decided that I would just relax, enjoy the ride and not think about what happened in Canterlot..
I looked out the window to see miles and miles of green plot land. As I stared out the window, I started to think about what I dreamed. “What a strange dream,” I said to myself.
“All passengers looking to get off at Ponyville please move to the nearest exit on the left side of the train.”
My ears perked up as I heard the announcement. I quickly grabbed my stuff on the railing above me and move the door.

I walked on out to the platform of the station. I looked around, there was not that many ponies here. Probably only two or three, that got off the train with me.
“Hey over here,” I heard a voice call to me.
I looked over and saw a White mare with white mane and a snowflake cutie mark waving at me.
I walked over to her and gave her a brotherly hug. “Hey Snowflake,” I said kindly.
She returned the hug and said, “Hey little bro. How was the train ride.”
I let go of her and responded, “It was OK. Fell asleep on the way here though.
“Well at least you got here safely. Sorry to hear about the foreclosure on your home. Do you have any idea what happened?
“Not a clue. I paid all of my bills on time, I had a well paying job and a simple home. There should be no reason.”
“Well hopefully our father can figure something out. Anyway, shall we get going.”
“Yea, let’s go.”

As we walked through the streets of ponyville, we stopped at a grocery store.
Snowflake turned to me and said, “You can wait out here, I only need to pick up some milk.”
I nodded and sat on one of the nearby benches. I sat there for a few minutes, just watching everypony go on with their day.
“You new here,” I heard a voice ask.
I looked over to my left and saw a red stallion with brown mane and a blood drop cutie mark looking at me.
I chuckled and asked, “What gave it away?”
He sat next to me and said, “Well Pinkie Pie gave it away. If Pinkie Pie did not throw a party for you, it means that she has not met you yet. So that means that you are older than thirty or she has not met you, which means you are new to town.
I looked at him and said, “Well you’re right. I am new here and I have not met Pinkie Pie yet. So who is she.”
“The party pony. She throws a party for every new pony in ponyville, including the new borns.”
I nodded and looked over at the doors to the store and my sister was standing outside waving over at me.
I turned to the stallion and said, “I gotta go now. See ya.”
I started to get up and leave when he said, “Wait.” I turned to him, he put out a forehoof and said, “Name’s Dusky Blood. I run all of the Workforce jobs in Ponyville. If you ever need work, just ask.” I nodded and shook his hoof. We then parted ways and my sister and I left for her house.

Time: Night
Through out the rest of the day, I unpacked my stuff into my room. My room was not half bad. It had a nice couch, a desk, a futon, a coffee table, a TV, a full length mirror and a bookshelf.
My sisters house was not a bad house either. It was a two story three bedroom house with a living room, kitchen, dining room and two bathrooms.
“Nightshade, dinner,” I heard my sister call.
“Coming,” I yelled back. On my way out, I stopped in front of the mirror to make sure I was titted up. I was a black unicorn with white stripes on my body, black and white spiked mane and tail, and a white knight chess piece for a cutie mark. I looked at myself one last time and went downstairs for dinner.
When I got downstairs, there was salad, fruit, rice and a apple pie. My sister sat at the table and I followed in response. “Well lets eat. Not every day I get to cook for a guest,” my sister said as we both dug into the food.
About an hour we had most of the food gone and we were both stuffed.
“That was delicious,” I complemented. “You are a really good cook.”
She smiled and said, “Thanks, I love cooking for other people.”
“Well that explains why you’re a chef at the Hay Burger”
She frowned and said, “Yea I just wish it wasn't a fast food place.”
I felt a little bad for her, so I got up, went around the table and gave her a hug of comfort.
“Thanks,” she said as she returned my hug.
When we let go of each other, she yawned and said, “It’s getting late, I think we should head to bed.”
I nodded in agreement and we said our goodnights to one another.
In my room, I set up the futon and laid on it. I started to drift off to sleep when I said to myself, “So this is my home for a whole year.”

I opened my eyes to see that I was surrounded by fog. I got up and looked around. I did not recognize where I was. Then again, the fog is so thick that I could not see more than two yards in front of me.
“What do you wish for,” I heard a voice ask.
“What do you mean,” I responded.
I did not hear the voice again. All I heard was a moving sound coming from behind me. I spun around and saw a blob moving towards me. I tried to back up, but when I did, a wall appeared behind me. I was shocked and did not know what to do.
I heard the voice call again, “Do you wish to survive?”
At that point a card floated down in front of me. It was white on one side and had a mask and designs on the other. My body at this point seemed to be moving on its own. I did a spin kick and, with my back legs, I broke the card. The card shattered and something appeared from it. I could not tell what is was. All it did was smash the blob in front of me with what looked like to be a sword. Then it disappeared.
The voice spoke again, “It seems you hold the power to find the truth. But are you capable of knowing it, let alone finding it. It seems only time will tell.”
I then passed out.

Time: Morning
My eyes shot open, and I realized that I was back in my room and it was morning. I got out of bed, took a shower and went down stairs. When I got down, there was a note on the table.
Morning Nightshade
I left already. My job called in and they needed me for the morning. I left some fruit for breakfast in the fridge I’ll see you tonight.
Snowflake
I set the note down and grabbed some food from the fridge. I sat at the table and thought about what to do next. I knew nopony in town, and had no job. While thinking I took a look at the note one last time. This time I flipped it over and there was something written on the back.

I laughed at myself as I thought about how she must have known what I was thinking. I finished up my breakfast, got up and walked outside to begin my new life in this town.
“I’m here for a year,” I said to myself. “Might as well make the most of it.”
