The Forgotten Orchard
Home Sweet Home
Load Full StoryNext ChapterSmall rays of early morning sun light drifted in between the curtains. The light chill on the breeze was enough to awaken the pony in bed.
"Looks like it's time to start bucking," she said through her awakening yawn.
Her mane was tousled, and awry. The light blonde hairs hiding her barely awake green eyes. Eyes that could easily, and did in fact, capture the fancy of any stallion. Bright green eyes, that when paired with her light dusting of white freckles, could melt even the coldest of hearts. She raised a hoof to brush the hair from her face.
Her hooves were not the softest, or the most polished, but they had seen many years of hard work. They were worn and tired, yet sturdy and undeniably strong. Her coat was, of course, in shambles. She did have a horrible case of bed hair. However, that orange fur was much softer to the touch than any other pony would have guessed.
She climbed out of bed, and did a very lazy pony stretch. Yawning as hard as she could. The muscles in her hind quarters tightened, showing off years of hard work. After her stretch, she turned to fix her bed. After all, who would want a messy bed after a hard days work?
Slowly strolling out of her room and into the hall, she began heading towards another bedroom. One with a lovely sign reading " Cutie Mark Crusaders ONLY"
The orange mare chuckled as she read that sign, it got her everytime. She could never figure out why it was so funny. Maybe it was the charm of those silly fillies. Or maybe, It made her think of happier times, times when she , too, would put up keep out signs.
Slowly pushing the door open, she began to whisper," Sugarcube, it's time ta get up, ya don't wanna be late again fer yer class."
The only answer she got was,"Ah don't wanna. lemme sleep five more minutes mah."
That word. One simple little word. Meaning nothing more to anypony else in the world. Nothing more than a southerners way of saying mom. That word. It made her want to cry. Right then and there. Just, break down all those walls she put up around her heart, and let the tears pour out.
Instead, she walked to the small bed, to the little filly laying so peacefully. Warm and snug in her bed. comforted by the warmth of her blankets, and the gentle touch of her pillow. Her red mane was everywhere. It looked as if it had not been touched by a brush since the day she was born. A smile crept across the orange mares face. her eyelids lowered. Her ears flattened to her head. One deep breathe later," AH SAID ITS TIME TA GET UP!!!! NOW GIT YER FLANK UP AND GET READY FER SCHOOL!!!"
The little yellow filly shot straight out of bed. She almost appeared to have been strapped to a rocket of sorts.
"Ah'm sorry, Apple Bloom, But sometimes, yer just to hard ta wake up. Thankfully, I have a pretty good screamin voice."
"Apple Jack, but why? Ah mean, it's not even a school day.. Ah coulda slept a bit longer."
"Oh ah musta forgot it was saturday.. well since yer up, ah might as well git ya to do some chores ta help out. today starts apple bucking season."
"Forgot.. sure.."
Thankfully, for the little fillies nerves, breakfast went a lot smoother than the waking up process. After she was done with her morning chores, which normally included sweeping and dishes, she ran out the door. "Apple Jack!! Ah'm leaving! Got a day planned with the girls! Ah'm gonna get mah cutie mark!!"
"Sure ya are, sugar cube. Y'all have fun, and remember not to go past the orchard gates. Ah don't wanna find no more fillies in that part of the farm. Ya know that place ain't safe, that's why we closed it down."
"We would never think of going back there.. "
"You better not. Ah'm not playin, little filly. Its a might too dangerous for little filles."
