She was in the hospital, that much she could tell. "This may be hard for you to hear, but it sealed her pupils, and damaged her iris."
"W-what?!" Leaf heard Rarity ask, "What does that mean?! What's wrong with her eyes?!"
"Well, the damage to the iris changed the color. Grey." Doctor Stable sighed, "There's an analysis on the table about her pupils. I suggest you read it."
"A-alright." Rarity said, shaken. She fell back asleep.
Leaf awoke to the sound of sobbing. Rarity. Why was she crying? She still didn't open her eyes. She was muttering something. "Poor Leafy." she said, "Not her. No, no. It's my fault. No, no, no. It's my fault this happened to my sister!"
She opened her eyes, expecting to see her sister where she felt her. At her side. But, nothing. "R-Rarity?" she asked, "Rarity, where're the lights?"
"Gem Leaf!!" Rarity exclaimed, pulling her sister in for a hug, "Gem Leaf, I'm so sorry! Don't cry, Leafy, be strong. It'll be alright. Please, don't cry."
"Rarity, what's going on?" Leaf asked, "Just turn on the lights. Please. You're scaring me."
"That won't make a difference, Leafy." Rarity said, "The lights are on."
"The fire." Leaf said, "There was a fire."
"It's all in the past, Leafy." Rarity said.
"Rarity, please." Leafy whimpered, "Only Sweetie calls me that, I can't see. There was fire!! What's going on!! Where are the lights?!"
"You learned about eyes in school, right?" Rarity asked, "How they function, and all that?"
"Yes."
"There's no easy way to say this." Rarity said, "The fire. It went through your cornea, and welded your pupil together. There was also an effect on the iris. It's color was changed to grey."
"You mean I'm... blind?" Leaf's eyes widened.
"I'm so sorry, darling." Rarity said, "It's my fault. I left the stove running."
"SWEETIE BELLE!!!" Leaf screamed, "SHE WAS THERE!!! THE FIRE!!! OH SHIT, RARITY!!! TELL ME SHE'S ALRIGHT!!!"
"She died last night, Leafy." Rarity said, "You've both been here for several days."
"So, it was all in vain?" Leaf asked.
"Don't say that, Leafy." Rarity held her sister close, "Nothing was in vain when it came to our sister."
"Who else knows?" Leafy asked.
"Everyone. Your friends, my friends, even the ponies you barely know." Rarity didn't let go.
"I'm really scared, Rarity."
