The Bestial Son
A Morning Catastrophe
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe morning sun. To everypony in Equestria, it signaled the starting of a new day. And it meant the morning life begins. In Canterlot Castle, Midnight laid in his bed, which was old and torn apart almost, as he lightly slept. But then, his aunt’s sun snuck into his room and slithered into his eyes like snakes.
“Couldn’t Aunt Celestia ever make her soon less harsh on me when I wake up?” Midnight said as he tried to pull a cover over his head. After a few failed attempts at this he then tried to get up and fell to the ground. Slowly, he brought himself up and saw the dried blood on his hooves.
What did I kill last night? He wondered as he observed his hooves. Quickly, he ran into his bathroom, turned on the kitchen sink, and began to wash the red liquid off of him. As he cleaned his hooves and mouth, the blood began to flow down into the sink. After a few minutes, he grabbed an old washrag and dried himself off. As he finished drying off Midnight headed down stairs and smelled food…. delicious food.
Sometimes, being a Wolf Pony is a gift. He thought as he sniffed at the air. He caught the smells of eggs, flour, potatoes, and many other kinds of ingredients that the royal chefs used. Slowly, he walked down the hallway of the castle to the dining hall, keeping his nose in the air to smell the food. But then, a migraine struck him, quickly making him stagger as he held his head tightly. A flash of light appeared in his eyes and the image of what seemed to be a scorpion’s tail was shown to him.
Leave my son alone you monster! He heard a voice say and recognized it as his own mother. Who else could pull off the royal canterlot voice like that? He finally made it to the kitchen and saw his mother in it cooking some food. “Um… mom what are you doing?” He asked as the princess of the night who turned to face him.
“Oh! Um…. I was just trying to cook for you. A mother does do that for her son.” Luna explained as she flipped a pancake with her magic.
“Oh boy. Remember when you tried to cook me that dinner once? Aunt Celestia had to pay a lot of workers to rebuild that wall.” He said back making Luna blush.
“Well I have improved since last time. Nothing can go wrong now.” Luna said. But then, a pancake inflated like a balloon before exploding, sending batter all over the back of Luna, the wall, and a little splattered on Midnight. Midnight licked some of the pancake batter off of him before he looked at his mom with a what-did-I-tell-you look.
“I’ll grab a mop.” Midnight said as he ran towards the supply closet. As he neared the supply closet-
“Hello cousin.” A classy and grading voice said to Midnight. He groaned before he turned his head only to see a royal sized headache.
“Hello Blueblood.” He groaned as he walked to the supply closet and opened the door.
“Well, I see that your cooking skills are in a need to tuning.” Blueblood teased as he walked up to the stallion.
“Ha-ha. I forgot how to laugh.” Midnight said as he looked around the closet. “For your information it was mother who tried to cook. She just had a little accident and I’m helping her clean.” He added. Blueblood smirked at this.
“So Aunty Luna decided to cook? I’m amazed that the whole castle hasn’t crumbled down in sheer fear of her awful cooking.” Blueblood said eliciting a growl from Midnight.
“You should be careful who you insult Blueballs.” Midnight said quietly.
“What did you say?!” Blueblood asked in a slightly raised voice.
“Nothing. Well I’d better get going.” He said as he grabbed the mop and headed back for the kitchen.
“Indeed. Out of this castle.” Blueblood said as he started to walk away making Midnight stand still.
“Hey Blueblood!” Midnight yelled. Blueblood started to turn around before getting a punch in his nose sending him staggering backwards. Midnight only chuckled as the unicorn covered a bleeding nostril. “That was for Mother and Aunt Rarity you dick.” Midnight said as he walked off. Blueblood also growled at him.
“I’ll make sure you pay for that you mutt.” He heard Blueblood say as he rose from where he was knocked down.
If only he knew. Midnight thought as he walked back to the kitchen. After a minute of walking, Midnight saw his mother was washing the stove off with a rag.
“Mother, maybe this can help more.” He said to her. Luna then grabbed the mop with her magic and filled a pail with water. She and Midnight then began to wash the kitchen. After what seemed like an hour, the two smiled at their work as the kitchen was spotless.
“How about this time the chefs cook?” Midnight asked his mother. Luna chuckled a little at this statement.
“Indeed my son. I think it best to call back the chefs.” Luna replied as she whistled for the chefs to return. After the food was ready Luna and Midnight sat down in the dining hall and ate but they also talked about last night’s little…. escapades.
“Mother, I do not see why you need to worry. I didn’t hurt anypony.” Midnight said.
“But you could have. Be lucky that the Manticore was the thing you hunted. But next time a pony could be the target.” Luna said back.
“Like it ever would hunt a pony. The beast needs a lot of meat. A pony wouldn’t supply it.” He said.
“But a family of them could. I am just worried that the animal would go after innocent ponies.” She said back to him. Midnight just rolled his eyes as he took another sip from his glass.
“Well we know now that last night’s little potion was complete and utter failure.” Midnight said dejectedly making Luna frown at her son.
“I’m sorry Midnight. I really thought that would help with your… problem.” She said sadly.
“Mother-” He started “I don’t think this curse is curable. Maybe I should just run. Run from Canterlot and never look back.” Midnight said as a single tear fell from his eye. Before Luna could say anything, Celestia appeared with an look of concern on her face.
Oh boy. Midnight thought as he stared at his aunt.
“Midnight, you didn’t happen to run into Blueblood earlier today did you?” She asked him. Midnight shrugged at the question.
“So what if I did? Does he need help eating his food?” Midnight asked her which didn’t make her drop the frown on her face.
“I need you to tell me the truth. Did you or did you not punch him in the face?” Celestia asked. Midnight just nodded.
“May I ask why you did?” Celestia asked him.
“Gee I don’t know. Maybe because he made fun of how mother cooked.” He said angrily.
“Still that does not mean you assault him.” She said.
“But he-”
“But nothing. I will leave Luna to give you your punishment.” Celestia said as she walked away. Midnight turned to see his mother who glared daggers at him.
“Mother I can explain-” Midnight started.
“Save it Midnight. You and I both know that what you did was dangerous and not to mention stupid.” She said angrily.
“Mother I-”
“You know you could have killed him! You do not own your own strength!” Luna yelled.
“But Blueblood insulted you! Doesn’t that give me a reason to protect your honor?!” He yelled back.
“NO! IT DOES NOT! YOUR LITTLE PROBLEM COULD’VE BEEN REVEALED!” Luna shouted in her royal Canterlot voice. It took nearly every bone in Midnight’s body to not shout back at her. He just glared at Luna before he turned back towards his food and continued eating it.
“With the way you talk to me some days maybe I should’ve just let him insult you.” Midnight tried to growl quietly but Luna overheard him anyways.
“What was that?” Luna asked sternly.
“Nothing. If you’ll need me, I’ll be in my chamber.” He said as he got off his chair and began to walk back. But then, he heard his mother’s hoof stamp the floor of the castle.
“Midnight, you will not head back to your chambers.” She said angrily. Midnight just ignored her order and continued to walk. “MIDNIGHT! YOU WILL STOP RIGHT THERE AND TURN AROUND TO TALK WITH ME RIGHT NOW!”
“OR WHAT?! WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY DO TO ME THAT COULD BE SOOOOO BAD?! HUH YOU POMPOUS OLD MARE!” He roared. Out of anger, Luna used her magic, picked him up and slammed him to the wall, pinning him to it. She then walked slowly up to the struggling stallion who had an angry look on his face.
“This…. is what I’ll do to you. Not bad for an old mare is it?” She asked. Midnight still glared at her.
“Let. Me. Go. Now.” Midnight growled at Luna. When she didn’t relent Midnight continued to try and release himself. “I wish you never found me in the gardens that night!” He shouted.
“I wonder why I did that myself!” Luna said back. But then, Luna just realized what she did and released Midnight who just kept his head low to the ground. She then walked up to him with a look of concern on her face.
“Midnight, I-” She started as she reached out to him only to get her hoof swatted away from him.
“Leave me alone.” Midnight said as he pushed his mother aside and walked back to his chambers. As he did this he also felt tears stream down his face.
“W-What have I done? W-Who am I?” He asked himself as he reached into a drawer, pulling out a silver coin glazed in honey.
