Chapter I

I gripped the wooden arms of the chair with my sweaty palms. I glanced around the room, I had never been here before. The waiting is always what kills you they say, knowing that just through the dark door in front of you, there's a beast of a woman, just waiting to chew you into little pieces. My name was called through the loudspeaker above the door,

"Liam Williams, please step through the door in front of you." I took a deep breath and stood up. I knew that whatever happened next would be beyond my control.

Ω

Just below my mint colored horn, my head was throbbing, I narrowed my eyes. something just didn’t sound right, my lyre was tuned correctly, and I was playing the notes precisely, something just didn’t fit. As I reread the music over and over, I facehoofed. I realized what I had been doing wrong! I had been mindlessly drumming away at it for hours, while the problem had been right under my nose the entire time!

Ω

As I stepped through the doorway, I got a sudden urge to run. The woman in front of me was not in a good mood, her brow furrowed in anger, she forced a smile onto her chiseled face and gestured for me to sit down. I quickly obliged, not wanting to upset this she-hulk of a woman.

“So I hear you have been causing a disturbance recently with your… banjo.”

“Guitar” I muttered,

“Its a guitar.” She glared at me, but continued speaking.

Ω

“The error of an amateur...” I mumbled quietly to myself as I began to tirelessly re-read the script before me.

A soft humming tone drifted lightly through the air. Following it swiftly, a shimmering field of blue sparked to life and enveloped the pages before me. That same tone reverberated around in my mind as it always has done with magic since I was a foal.

Focusing on that tone, my amber eyes settled on book, absentmindedly watching the pages fold slowly within the sparkling field of cyan.

The tone wandered and distorted in frequency, my mind effortlessly pulling delicately at each curving wave as they came, my magic as precise and practiced to my subconscious as the sounds of my lyre are to me.

The pages stopped turning and the field around them faded, as did the soft glow surrounding my horn. That elegant tone echoing gently for a few seconds before dissipating entirely.

I poked the curved symbol at the beginning of the bar with a hoof.

“You there, have deceived me, bass clef” I said to it, before adding

“If you test me, you shall fail”

Summoning that familiar tone back to it’s simple life within my head, I reached out with my magic to the lyre beside me and begun to play. Each string moving as desired in perfect rhythm, the mental tone sung quietly in tune with the sonnet flowing from the frame of the golden instrument.

Ω

As the principal spoke, her lips warped and twisted but made no sound, I was enveloped in memory long before she began to speak. As soon as I uttered the word "guitar" I was lost in in my past, remembering everything about my beloved instrument.

It spoke to me more than any man on this planet could, the simple notes working together to form an elegant tune. I could remember everything about my guitar, how it looked, how it felt in my hands, how to tune it just right to enhance the already wonderful sounds emanating from its vibrating strings, my guitar was my life. Even thinking about it, I felt a chill slowly move down my spine, as it always did at the end of song, just as the tone echoed out of existence.

As much as I knew about my wondrous guitar, there was something missing. I felt as if someone had entered my mind and removed my most important thought withought looking back. I felt like a piece of me had been lost, but I didn’t have time to think about it. My thoughts shattered away, as my ears and eyes began working again, and I heard the snap of a finger, and the horrendous voice of a horrendous woman shouting at me.

Ω

As the melodic tone of my lyre filled the air, everything else seemed insignificant. Focusing, I began to play a simple tune, one I had known since I was a filly. My concentration was suddenly lost, as the door to my room slammed open, and I heard the ever-so-familiar (yet slightly annoying) voice of my roommate and best friend Bon Bon.

“Where is it?!” she yelled, her voice pushing away the remnants of the song, still echoing in my head.

“What?” I replied, doing my best imitation of a baby lamb.

“Dont play games with me Lyra! You know what I’m talking about!”
I did of course, know what she meant, but I wasn’t going to admit it that easily. Begging that she didn’t see through my ruse,
I repeated

“What?” and held my breath. She glared and me and muttered

“Perhaps she really doesn’t know wh--” she was interrupted by my laughter, I cursed myself silently, but continued, not caring what she thought of me.

Ω

“Recently, you have been playing your guitar during inappropriate times, due to this fact, I will unfortunately have to K̴̘̼͍I͢L͏͕̞͇̰̫̥͍L͔̝̟̞͖ ͍̻̼̘̼̗͢YO҉̥͇͈͚U̧̟ ̥̺͜A̭̙͕̱̖Ņ̰̞̜̟̭͍Ḏ̭͠ ̴̼͍̝ͅY͈̹͜O̳͝U̙R̠ F̸̳̭͇͙̣̪A̹̙̺̥̤͚͇MI͢L̙͓̱Y̷̪ ͍̲̝A̷̱̜̻͓̟̥N͚͔D͎̯̟͇͔ ̳̟͎͘C͎͍͍̤͠O̯͓̩N̗̭̱S̗̝̱U̵M͢Ẹ̺̦ ͟T̢̠͕̦H̺̘̠É̯̺̳̗͍̥̠I̴̱͕͙̗̙͖͓R̤̪͕̹̩̤͟ ̯͍͕̼̮S̲̜O̠͔U̺͚L҉͙̤͙S̸͉̭͎͉̙͓̳” She said, her face morphing into some kind of horrible beast, her eyes became the size of dinner plates, widening at such a rate that I was paralyzed with fear.

I was frozen in place, searching for any sign that the paralyzation of my body dispersing.
But it did not come, I was stuck, sitting in front of some horrible beast, shouting at
me from behind her yellowed teeth and forked tongue, unable to run, she moved closer...

I awoke suddenly from my sleep, my right ear aching from resting on my elbow, and my eyes raw. I was still in the waiting room of the office, my palms sweating rivers, not just from nervousness, but from horror, that somehow a nightmare (or daymare, whatever) like that, might come true in the real world.

I pushed the thought out of my mind, as I stood up and walked towards the door, that had held my nightmares just seconds earlier.
