I can't exactly explain how I felt at that moment, it wasn't one simple emotion, that much I'm sure of, but I do know what I felt most strongly after I read the message... Anger. I felt angry and betrayed. Most importantly, I felt alone for the first time in a long... long time.
"I think we should see other people, it hasn't been working out like I'd hoped. I hope we can still be friends."
It was that last line that hurt the most, so generic, so cold. She'd already cast off our time together and wanted to continue like there was something left. Maybe we could have if she'd done it in person, maybe if she's put a little more effort in... Right now, to me, there was nothing left between us. It hurt to think that, but I didn't want to stay friends with someone who could break my heart so easily and then act so nonchalant about it. It was the end of a good time in my life.
After a while I forgot about her, the mare who broke my heart. Months had passed and in that time I never once thought of why. I'd always assumed it was something I did, something I said... or it was just about who I was.
I'm just flowing with confidence right?
You see, I'm not a very interesting stallion. I finished high school with honors, but not enough for very many scholarships. I'm no athlete, but I'm not exactly out of shape either. I'm just a standard build unicorn, completely average. Except for one thing...
I'm really good at learning. Yes, learning is my special talent, the thing that my life is shaped around. I'm proud of my talent, but I can't think of anything less practical for living my life.
I'm a sponge for information, if I study something enough I can master it fairly quickly. Many of my teachers thought if I applied myself I could be in the top of my class, but I was too distracted to make use of my talents. I could use my talent to impress some people by reciting some obscure facts or trivia, but it wasn't useful for very much aside from schoolwork and taking tests.
You can only get so far with how well you'd done in school, and knowing random facts and trivia answers won't do you very much good in the workplace.
Which leads to today's issue. I've got a job interview soon and I need to make sure I'm prepared for any question.
"Hello Sir or Madame, I am Django Sol, a unicorn specialized in learning. I graduated with honors from Canterlot High School and briefly attended Canterlot University. I believe I can bring a unique perspective to the workplace because I've always though of myself as a creative stallion with inventive ideas. I would appreciate it if you'd consider me for any open position, I can learn any position quickly."
Saying it aloud made it seem even more stiff than I'd expected. I couldn't get the confidence to show in my voice...
I immediately started steeling my nerves for the inevitable, I wouldn't be getting any job, but I still had to put in an application. My apartment rent was due soon, and my landlord was only willing to help out if he knew I was actively looking for a job.
I'll probably end up homeless soon too... Have I mentioned my great self esteem?
And so, I packed up my bag, cleaned myself up a bit in the mirror, and left for the interview. I didn't know it then, but I wasn't going to be worried much about my living situation after today.
Aside from my borderline depressive look on life, I really did love the city I grew up in. Canterlot was so beautiful. In the spring and summertime the flowers and trees were vibrant, and in the fall and winter the weather was nice and cool, the ground covered in a thin sheet of snow. It was the end of winter now, and the snow was melting on it's own, Celestia's work no doubt, she does so much for Equestria.
I'd spent so much time preoccupied with the weather I hadn't noticed the group of ponies amassed ahead of me. I couldn't wait for them to move, I was in too much of a rush for my interview, so I decided to take one of the alleys to go around.
I grew up here, so I naturally knew which way to go for the quickest route. I'd gone through them so many times I'd learned a few unique shortcuts through. Hop a few fences, move some trash cans around and suddenly you can be anywhere you want to be.
I'd almost made it through the alleys, but something new caught my eyes... a door.
I'd been through these alleys, and I'd never once ran into a door, especially not one as unique as this. The door was very ornate, black wood with sleek golden trim. It seemed very out of place. I couldn't help but let my curiosity take over.
As I went to the door and reached to open it, something hit me... no really, something hit me, hard.
The last thing I remember is opening my eyes a bit. It was fuzzy but I knew who I was looking at. The mare who broke my heart so many months ago.
And she wasn't alone.
"Why... Ditzy..."
I could feel them lift me off the ground, but I couldn't stay conscious much longer, I'd been hit a lot harder than I thought.
I closed my eyes and passed out as they carried me through the door.
