Purify
Revival of the dead
Load Full StoryNext ChapterDawn read the spell a third time over, then a four, and a fifth. She has read her sister's notes and journals plenty of times over. She read from her sister that reading something over a few times, it will stick in your head better.
Dawn looked over at the picture that she had gotten from her mother. In it was a lavender unicorn, smiling brightly at the camera. Her mane was dark purple with a lighter shade running through it. Her lavender eyes shined with excitement. This was her late sister. Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight was the foster daughter of her own mother, Celestia, who found a way to make infertile mares fertile once again. If it wasn't for her, Dawn wouldn't be here. Twilight even got her parents back together somehow. She was only ten when she was told of her sister's passing.
Twilight was sent on a mission to the Crystal Empire, which reappeared out of nowhere, to defeat the evil King Sombra. She beat him, but not the way anyone expected. She was exposed to large quantities of dark magic that gave her a huge hunger for power and corruption. As a result, Sombra was killed for interfering, the Crystal Empire was held in her grasp, and her father was defeated when he tried to disperse the dark magic.
When she finally arrived at Canterlot, she was defeated by Dawn's mother. Celestia did the only thing she could do and killed Twilight. It was only shortly after that things started to look up, the fertilizing spell being one of those.
Dawn, now twenty-three, had her plan to fix this. It was simple, yet could go wrong in so many ways. If she messed up, it will all be for naught and she could end up dead. But she will have to take that risk.
~~~~~~~
"Well, it looks ready." I mumbled, looking around my magical casting circle. In its center was a vial of blue and purple smoke. They twirled around each other, not wanting to touch the other, never mingling. This, this was Twilight Sparkle.
As I read in many tomes and studies, the dark magic broke apart when she was killed, taking her soul with it. If I casted the spell correctly, I could bring her soul back from the æther of death and recreate her body. The only downside, I would have a free roaming soul by the name of Despair. Despair will either reattach to Twilight, attach to me, or find a new host. I want to at least try and capture it before it goes on a complete rampage as some other pony or reconnects to Twilight, forcing me to kill her a second time.
I sighed and made sure my blade was nearby. My æther blade was similar to the one my mother pulls out of her own æther. The difference is the blade's cyan color, matching my coat. I was glad it didn't pick up any color from my mane. Pink does not work on cyan, no matter how color blind you are.
"Dawn, where are you baby?" Shit. Mom. I tried to keep it from her and Dad, who is nearly impossible to predict, for as long as I can until I can successfully store away Despair and explain the situation to Twilight. Now, here I was, my horn already lit and the spell just starting, and my mom is about to walk in. How freaking perfect this is.
To delay her for as long as I can, I placed wards on the door to keep it locked. I also placed wards on the room to make it impossible for her to teleport in or eavesdrop on what I was doing. Thankfully, living with a Draconequus also meant I knew how to keep my father out as well. Now they can't get in until I let them in, hopefully.
The spell was starting to kick off into phase two of three. The souls were now out of the bottle and separating into their respective beings. The dark purple laced with black flowing in one direction, the dark magic pouring from it, and the blue soul going in the other. It was at this point that I prepared the urn that in laced with multiple wards and spells to keep the dark soul in and others out.
"Dawn, what the hell are you doing in there?! That better not be dark magic I sense!" shouted mother. Oh yeah, I forgot she tried to pound 'do not play with dark magic' into my head. Sorry, I'm doing the exact opposite, and succeeding in bring back your dead daughter.
The third phase kicked in, a body starting to form around the blue soul. Before Despair's essence could latch onto anything, I threw the urn open side forward at the soul, encasing Despair in its magic walls. Sadly, this didn't catch all of it.
"Shit!" I yelled, watching as a small snippet of the dark soul lunged at Twilight's as it was cut off from the main body. As a result, the blue mass was tinted purple, but not overpowering it. The soul flickered but the third phase continued as I corked off the urn, sealing away the incarnate inside.
A lavender body of a mare started to form before me, it's stature the size of an alicorn. But, she is a unicorn, why am I getting a alicorn build. I stared in wonder as Twilight grew above me and stopped at my aunt Luna's height. A pair of lavender wings spread out from the mares back as a dark purple mane with a lighter shade highlight dropped over her shoulders. From the mass of hair protruded a lavender horn, as long as my own mothers depicting from the size. Finally, she opened her eyes. They flashed white briefly before settling down to their normal lavender. She stood there for a few moments before pitching forward. I jumped forward and caught her, accidently cutting off the flow of magic on my wards.
"Dawn, what the hell are you...doing...in...here." I smiled sheepishly as my mother walked into the room, Discord, my father, right behind her. It wasn't an odd scene at all. I mean, it's totally to walk into your daughters room and find a dark purple glowing urn and your daughter holding onto a pony that is supposed to be dead in the middle of the room. Totally normal....yeah, I'm fucked.
"Um, honey, what is that?" Asked mother, pointing a shaky hoof at Twilight. I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"This is, um, my dead sister?" Oh sweet Faust was this not going as well as I planned. Twilight isn't even awake and mom already knows. This is going to be difficult.
"And how about that?" Asked Discord, pointing his eagle claw at the urn.
"That would be Despair." I replied, still smiling sheepishly. Suddenly, Twilight groaned and started to squirm. Oh Faust, please don't wake up just yet. Please don't wake up.
"Where in Tartarus am I?" Asked the drowsy mare as she sat up. Her new wings flared out as she sat up, managing to hit me in the face and send me sprawling on the floor. I groaned and gripped my cheek where her wing clipped me. Twilight heard me and turned to look at me.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I guess. My name is Twilight Sparkle. Do you mind telling me where I am?" Asked Twilight. I groaned as I sat up. My wings instinctively flaring out. I looked up to find her staring at me with her mouth hanging open. I cocked my head and looked at my spread out wings.
"Right, dead for fourty-three years. Forgot about that." I said, scratching the back of my neck. The clearing of a throat caused the two of us to turn towards to very unhappy parents. While I smiled sheepishly at them, I could feel Twilight stare in shock at them before glaring at my father. Right, was enemies with dad. Forgot about that. Faust, I'm forgetting a lot of things today.
"You!" growled the mare, still oblivious to the wings on her back, thus forgetting her stronger magic influx. I am just fucking everything up. Father came to the same conclusion as me and tried to run but was tackled to the ground and held under the weight of a very pissed Twilight.
"What are you doing here?! I turned you into stone!" Shouted Twilight. Discord attempted to shrink back into the floor, succeeding slightly thanks to his magic. Mother, finally recovering from seeing her daughter again, lifted Twilight off of father.
"Twilight, it's not what you think. You have been gone awhile." said Celestia. Twilight cocked her head.
"How long?" She asked.
"Fourty-three years according to mother." I said, smiling at her. Twilight stared blankly at me. After a few moments she face hoofed and started to laugh.
"I completely forgot about that spell. I'm guessing you found my journal, mother?" Asked Twilight.
"It was actually brought to my room. Took me a few weeks to get the strength to read it." said Celestia, sighing sadly as she set down the mare.
"Why? You think I was dead?" She asked. So far it seems no memory from Despair tramsferred over. I should write that down later.
"Twilight, you were dead, should be dead, but it looks like a certain filly did some snooping in the more forbidden spells." said Celestia, glaring at me. I shrugged.
"I removed an evil incarnate, sue me." Discord chuckled at my remark. I was told that I got my smartass-ness from him. Oh how I enjoy it.
"Wait, I-I was dead?" Asked Twilight, stuttering slightly. Celestia sat down across from her and nodded.
"Do you remember me sending you to the Crystal Empire and what transpired there?" Asked Mother. Twilight nodded.
"Her memory loss must have started when she opened the door. Despairs memories probably won't kick in until later on." I muttered, levitating a note pad over to me and recording my analysis for further studies on this matter.
"Despair? Why does that sound familiar?" Asked Twilight.
"Because, after you opened the door, the dark magic that poured into you as a defense system corrupted your mind, which I'm guessing Dawn here fixed." She said, motioning to me. I smiled and waved as Twilight looked at me. She smiled sheepishly and waved back. "However," continued mom. "The result was creating a dark magic incarnate similar to Sombra, just using you as a vessel.
"From there you proceed to kill Sombra and take over the Crystal Empire. Well, I should say Despair did all that. You were just being used. On your way to Canterlot to overthrow me and claim Equesteia you were intercepted by Discord so he could try and disperse the dark magic. Needless to say, he failed and ended up nearly dying."
"I still have the scar." muttered Discord, pouting. Celestia giggled and kissed his forehead.
"Yes, but I don't care. Now, that only left the last choice of killing you. Trust me, I tried thousands of tactics but none would work. So, we battled I killed you in the end. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my long life." said Mother, her ears splaying back. I rarely see her like this, but when it comes to this exact topic, it's common.
"So, how was I revived?" Asked Twilight. Well shit. This ain't exactly good news for me.
"I was wondering how that happened. Dawn, would you care to explain?" Asked mother, pointing a glare at me that would make manticore's piss themselves.
"Nah, I think I will just turn in for the night..." I turned on the spot and found my bed torched. Oh yeah, the spell. Not exactly something you want to cast around flammable objects. I sighed and sat back down.
"I figured you would be more than happy if you saw your first daughter again. So, for about a year I've read up on the subject of soul revival and dark magic. I found out that when the host is killed, their soul and the dark magic are split up." I explained, keeping my vision in the direction that was anywhere but my parents. "After finding a sample of the souls of Twilight and Despair, they were together of course, I crafted a spell that would attract the rest of the souls and piece them back together."
"Then how come Twilight isn't still possessed by Despair?" Asked Discord.
"Well, the spell split the souls apart. Leaving Twilight's to reform her body since she originally had one, and leaving Despair to wander free as a spirit. When the souls were in the final stage, which is gathering a body, I sealed Despair in that urn. However, a small inkling detached and reattached itself to Twilight's soul. Wether it will be problematic or not is unknown."
"What about her being an alicorn then?" Asked mother.
"An alicorn? What are you...holy shit I have wings!" Shouted Twilight examining the wings on her back. She walked in a full circle, examining her new look.
"Well, you said she had enough magical power that it was amazing how she wasn't one. I believe that when the spell rebuilt Twilight, it built her to accomadate for her magic and knowledge. Thus, alicorn." I deduced. Twilight sat back down on her haunches, still gaping at her wings.
"Well, it seems your time spent buried in books helped out a bit." said mother with a chuckle. Discord scoffed.
"And despite that we caused plenty of chaos in the castle." said the Draconequus with a smirk. I laughed.
"And all the guards learned very fast that if we are seen snickering with each other to beware of any danger ahead." I said with a chuckle.
"And you learned very fast not to prank your mother." said mother with a smirk. Ah yes, that was a fun time, until I had poison joke in my shampoo and coat wash. That was just dirty, yet hilarious, even if it was on me.
"Good times." I said with a smile. Twilight chuckled lightly, finally showing signs of relaxing. It was a good sign, to say the least. I learned from my mother that you should always try to stay relaxed and calm to help the mind work at its full capacity and to make dealing with things easier.
"Wait," said Twilight, standing up. "What happened to Flash Sentry?" Oh fuck. This is not going to go over well. I can feel it. And parents felt so as well telling by the winces they gave in unison.
"Awkward." I said, shifting slightly. Mother shot me a glare which I responded with a sweet innocent smile. You can never deny a sweet innocent smile. She snorted and look back at my sister.
"He's, uh, been busy." said Mother, coughing into the crook of her foreleg. Twilight cocked her head.
"What do you mean by 'busy'?"
"Two kids. I think I actually babysit one of their kids later today." I replied, tapping my chin. I'm not even sure if I do have to babysit one. It would more than likely be a pain, though. Children of the Wonderbolts tend to be fast little bastards. It probably runs in the family.
"Wha-what?" she asked, her eyes glazing over slightly.
"Have you not heard of easing them into it?" Asked mother glaring at me.
"Nope!" I replied with a huge grin. Mother sighed and shook her head.
"It took him ten years but he finally settled down from your death. Another six and he was dating the former Wonderbolts captain, Spitfire. And as you just heard from Dawn, they have grandchildren." said Mother, looking apologetically at Twilight. Said mare was now crying. I would too if I found out the one I loved moved on and found someone else after I died, but now I'm once again alive.
"So, he's happily married?" She asked. Celestia nodded, letting her take it in. Twilight took in a steady breath, trying to calm herself. Meanwhile, I charged my horn and I went to work on repairing my bed. The fires were snuffed out, the mattress was rebuilt, and the sheets replaced. Thankfully, the pillows went unharmed. I stood up and placed a hoof on her shoulder.
"You can sleep in my bed for now. We need to try and ease this onto Luna and the other elements." I said softly, carefully guiding her to the large bed. She leaned against me and allowed me to bring her to the bed, flopping on top of it as soon as it was close enough.
"We will be back in a few hours with a plate of food, alright?" I asked, leaning down to her eye level. She nodded slightly and nuzzled into the sheets. I sighed and embraced her. "It'll be alright."
"Yeah, I guess. I just hope you made the right choice in reviving me, Dawn." said Twilight, curling into a small ball. I kissed her on the forehead and left the room to where my parents were waiting.
"Well, I can say I'm impressed with how well you pulled of that spell, Dawn. However, it was still risky." chided mother.
"On the bright side, it worked. And turned her into an Alicorn, no less." commented father. Mother nodded.
"It's just going to be a pain in the ass to explain. In the meanwhile, what do we do with her?" She asked, pointing at Despair's urn.
"We store it somewhere and hope my seal holds. If it breaks, all hell will break loose and we will have to kill a incarnate, again." I said with a shrug.
"Well, it's something. We better go talk to Luna and break it to her. I will send for the elements via Spike." said Mother. I nodded.
"Right, let's get this over with."
~~~~~~~~~
Rainbow Dash sat in the library proper, four other mares sitting with her. She chuckled slightly. When Twilight was still alive, these meetings were common for the studious mare. Now, they were held by the young Spike who had kept up the library after her death. Sadly, they weren't as often as they used to be.
"What do ya reckon he brought us here fer?" Asked AJ, the elder earth pony mare sitting back against the wall. Rainbow shrugged.
"Hell if I know. How bout you Rare's? Has he been muttering something about this in his sleep?" Asked Rainbow. Rarity, wife of the drake and the mother of his children, shook her head.
"I have not. He got a scroll and told me to gather you four." replied the white unicorn. At that exact moment, the upstairs door opened and Spike walked down the stairs. The purple drake looked slightly worried as he held a scroll in one claw and a gem in the other.
"Well, the elements have been called back to Canterlot." said the drake as he joined them. They all gasped. The elements have not once been called to action since Twilight's death. They hardly even ever went there.
"But why? We aren't the elements of harmony anymore. We haven't been without Twi." said Dash, leaning forward in her chair. Spike opened up the scroll and read.
"Dear Spike, I know it is probably early and you are opening up the library, but this is urgent. I need you and the other elements of harmony to come to Canterlot at once. It concerns Twilight. Please use the teleportation crystal I have sealed away in the scroll. See you soon. Princess Celestia." He finished and set it aside. The six of them stood in silence, not wanting to move. Finally Spike stepped forward and placed his claw out.
Rainbow Dash hesitated a bit before placing her hoof on his claw. Her hoof was followed by a white one, an orange, a pink, and finally a yellow. Spike took a deep breath and the gem started to glow. After a few seconds, the six were gone.
~~~~~~~~~
It was a weird meeting. The five elements of harmony, the two pony princesses, a Draconequus, and a retired Royal Guard. Oh how this was just an interesting meeting. I looked over the group once more and leaned towards, my mother.
"Are you sure we should have her come out? She only just woke up plus she has only been alive for a few hours." I asked, eyeing the anxious ponies and drake, before me. Mother nodded.
"I'm sure. Now, prepare to let her in." I nodded and focused my magic on the door knob, clutching the other side as to make sure no pony saw it. I nodded to her to confirm I was ready. She cleared her throat, catching the attention of the others.
"Now, I am sure you are wondering why you were called her so early in the day. As you already know, this concerns our late Twilight Sparkle." said Mother. I could see the others, especially Flash Sentry, flinch at her name. A very interesting meeting indeed.
"Yeah, so? Can you just get to why we are here?" Asked Rainbow Dash, the cyan Pegasus flapping her wings impatiently.
"Of course. Dawn, if you would." I nodded and turned the door knob, opening the door ever so slightly. The gasps from the others made me hold me breath.
Twilight walked into the room, her wings at full staff as she had yet to get used to the appendages. She made her way towards the others, her features painted with sadness and relief at seeing them again.
"Sister, what trickery is this?" Asked auntie Luna. I cleared my throat.
"It's actually a spell I created based off of soul magic and altered around with Dark Magic theorems. This IS Twilight, albeit as an alicorn." I replied. Rarity, a white unicorn with a deep purple mane, fainted backwards into Spike who caught her with practiced ease.
"Does that normally happen?" I asked, pointing at Rarity. Spike sighed and nodded.
"Yes. Out of all the years we've been married, I've gotten used to catching her. She seemed to do it more after we had kids." said the drake. Twilight chuckled and shook her head.
"I'm dead for fourty years and I come back to find everyone married and grand parents. Time flies." said Twilight, still chuckling slightly. Flash Sentry looked away.
"I'm sorry." He muttered, catching all of our attention. Twilight cocked her head at him.
"Oh, what do you mean?"
"I completely counted you as dead and I got married an-"
"And you moved on. I WAS dead. It just so happened that my mother gave birth to a very talented young mare." said Twilight with a smile. She took a few steps forward until she was tackled by five mares, one drake, and a single stallion, creating a huge ball of sobbing ponies.
"Told you it was a good idea." remarked mother, looking at the sight with a smile and glassy eyes. I chuckled.
"Never said it wasn't. I merely asked if you were ready for whatever may happen." I replied, tears of my own streaking down my face. Hey, I'm a sucker for heart warming moments, sue me.
"I'm still worried." commented father, looking at the scene with a frown.
"Discord worried? That's a rarity." joked mother. Discord shook his head.
"You said it yourself, Dawn. Despair isn't fully removed. How much can Twilight take before she starts lapsing between herself and Despair?" Asked Father. I frowned myself and looked over at the scene.
"It's unknown. It was a small part so it will take longer to gain enough energy to do so. However, I do know it is enough to twist her insight while having her true insight still intact. So, she sees things two ways. The way Twilight views it, and the way Despair does." I theorized.
"A plus is that we will be able to tell when she has fallen into a lapse. Her eye color will change as it would if she was corrupted. For how long a lapse will last, that is unknown as well. It depends on how much energy Despair has at the time and how much Twilight fights against it, which can't last forever."
"So, we have to try and remove Despair the rest of the way before Twilight falls to Despair." said mother, putting her forehooves together and placing them underneath her chin.
"Exactly. I'm not sure of the normal spell will do though. I might have to write another spell just for splitting apart souls. It's going to be difficult but I can do it." I said. Mother nodded and looked over the scene once more.
"Please do. I don't think they can stand to loose her second time."
~~~~~~~~~
"September 6, 43 FT. It's only been three days and we might as well go into a new era. RT, if you would. The Rise of Twilight. Though, we could always count the first fourty-three years as the beginning of the RT era." I moved up my blue reading glasses on the bridge of nose with a hoof, my magic creating a voice document.
"As I have recently documented, my expirement on the reviving of souls was a success. I still do not know if this will work on a normal soul due to the fact that it was used on a corrupted soul. Thankfully, the spell split the souls and I was able to contain the corruption except, for 1% which latched onto subject one.
"I am currently in the process of deriving a more powerful and more effective dispersing spell. With this spell I should be able to remove the final 1% of dark energy by the name of Despair and create a pure Twilight Sparkle. The spells name will be Purify, named after its nature.
"I will be using magic amplifying runes to boost my magic to the correct wattage to pull off the purifying of a soul. I will be using the equation Me=Mi * Ma which stands for Magical Energy equals Magical Input times Magical Amplitude. If I can get a 4,000 or higher Magical Energy, I can supposedly achieve soul purification. This spell will be modified to use the average magical input of 30 joules." I ended the recording and finished off my notes. I viewed over to make sure I got a handle over everything.
"Now, I need to find Ma so it should be Me/Mi equals Ma. So, if Me equals 4,000 and Mi equals 30, Ma should equal..." I wrote down my equation and did the math in my head. "Ma should be 133.33 repeating. Hmm. I should use runes to equal 134 amps. This should be able to pull off the spell. However..." I casted the recording spell once more, pacing around the room as I did my math.
"I have come to the conclusion that my runes would need to equal at a minimum of 134 amps. However, my Magical Energy cannot over excel 10,000 mega joules for it could destroy the soul. Make sure to measure your average Magical Input before hand and use the equation Me= Mi times 134. This should help prevent mishaps. If your first measure goes over 10,000, lower your rune amplitude to make the total Magical Energy below 10,000." I ended the spell once more and sighed as I sat on the edge of my bed. Three days and I came up with a spell and equation to purify a soul. Suck it, Magical Scientist Union!
"You finished in here?" Called out a voice. I looked over to see Twilight standing in the door way, looking into my room curiously. I never let her into my room when I was working on my spell. The risk of Despair trying to sabotage the spell was too great.
Grabbing all my notes and shoving them in my æther I waved her in. "Of course. I cracked the equation and just need to figure out my own Magical Input and adjust it from there." I said as she joined me on the bed.
"Three days and you already have a solution. Your a better scientist then me." said Twilight, giggling. I giggled myself, something I rarely did despite being a female.
"I grew up reading your notes. I would read each of them as carefully as possible and as frequently until I had them memorized, the rest was just stuff I picked up along the way." I said, shrugging it off. Twilight looked over my room, examining each detail. She froze, however, when she came across the floor next to my bed. I wasn't exactly sure what she was looking at.
"Well, this is....interesting." she said. I saw the blush on her cheeks and I instantly knew what she was looking at. I felt my own cheeks grow crimson.
"Which edition is it?" I asked, hoping it isn't what I think it is.
"Swimsuit edition."
"Wonderbolts, Day Gaurd, or Night Guard?"
"Night Guard." Yup. Bat ponies. Hot, sexy, bat pony mares in swim suits. I coughed and lifted the stack of magazines away from Twilight and under my side of the bed.
"So, uh, you don't have a problem with Filly Foolers, do ya?" I asked, my cheeks burning. Evil blush. Twilight shook her head.
"Nope. I'm actualy Bisexual." Oh, that's a re- wait, what?!
"What?!" Twilight jumped. "But, you had a fiancé and all that. How are you Bi?"
"I said I as Bi, not gay. I swing both ways. I'm actually thinking of trying the other half of the spectrum now that I'm alive and single." said Twilight. I chucked.
"That's going to be one hell of a first date. 'I like long walks on the beach, ice cream, oh, and I was dead for fourty-three years before being revived by my best friend." I joked. The two of us broke out in laughter.
"Yeah, a bit of a turn off." replied Twilight.
"I actually think its hot." Oh shit, what did I just say? We both fell silent, Twilight starring at me in disbelief and me just sitting here with a massive blush trying not to pounce on that beautiful lavender coat as she stared me with those huge...no, bad mind!
"Well, it's not like we are related..." Oh Faust, what am I DOING? "And we both have an interest in mares..." Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it. "So, we could always just go on a date." Oh Faust...
"Yeah, I guess that is alright." I knew it, I comple-wait, she said yes?
"You mean you would go out with the random ass alicorn that tested a spell to try and revive you?" I asked. Twilight smiled and nodded.
"As long as you don't try to test anything else that isn't for my personal well being, of course." Fuck self control. I squealed and tackled her into a hug, bringing her into a death hug.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Twilight laughed from her position pinned under me. I started showering her forehead, not giving a shit about common courtesy. I've had to live that for my whole life and it can go suck a changeling dick.
"Alright alright, you can get off me now." said Twilight, still laughing. I giggled and rolled off her, laying down right next to her as we observed the ceiling. I was still giddy beyond belief, don't ask me why. I think it's just because she understands me in a way. However.....
"You aren't just doing this because I brought you back, right?" I asked, my smile disappearing. She stared at me in disbelief and sat up.
"Dawn, I couldn't do that to somepony. I'm doing this because I'm interested to see how this goes. Yes, you'll be the first mare I've ever dated, but you are sweet, beautiful, and practically smarter than me almost. I'm doing this not just because you revived me." I teared up and reattached myself to her chest.
"Good. I've had enough of those, I don't want you to turn out to be one to. Just using you because of what I represent and what I do." I said, burying my head further into her chest.
"I won't."
