The First Alien War (AW-I)
Commander Kim F.'s log:
1999 January 1st: The First Alien War Begins
“With our base under Treetop City finally complete, X-Com is ready for action. We have the best available equipment from the gryphons, the best planes from the dragons, the best soldiers, and all eager to fight against these aliens. The computers and radar that have been supplied by the buffalo and zebra are the best in the world. Now all we have left to do is to wait until the buggers show up, and I hate waiting.”
Closing the log down, I got up from my chair as my stomach growled at me, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten breakfast yet. Leaving my office and making my way along the somewhat unfamiliar corridors of Treetop Base, I frowned, wondering whether we would get some action any time soon. The last thing I wanted was for X-Com to end up as a money sink the way the Razor Talons had, though the thought of them did bring a slight smile to my face. Those gryphons must have been so bored just sitting around waiting for the aliens to actually show themselves.
As the door to the mess hall opened, I frowned, seeing nopony there, why was there… oh, right. I facehoofed at how dumb I had been, this was the mess for the alien containment area, not for the rest of the base personnel. I knew I should have studied the map more. Turning around, I trotted back to the living quarters to search for the right mess hall.
It took over half an hour to find the place, squirreled away being the third set of living quarters. Sighing in relief when the door opened to reveal living ponies rather than dead air, I trotted up to the galley where three ponies were dishing out food to other hungry ponies. Getting together my usual, a daisy sandwich and a cup of tea, I found a table to eat at.

After a morning of drills and practicing with weapons in the base’s shooting range, I was heading back to my quarters to sleep off lunch when the sirens started howling. “Warning! Warning! UFO detected!” One of the radar techs’ voices echoed over the noise of the speakers.
Finally, I thought, now we can have some fun. Or at least get the chance to put what we were learning into practice for real. With any luck, one of the three pilots would have taken their interceptor out to shoot the bug down while both squads of soldiers geared up.
Galloping to the armoury, I found the other soldiers had already raided it, leaving only a pistol with some ammunition, a stun rod, grenade and an electro-flare, not that we should need the last as they were designed for night use. As good as we were at magic, we didn’t have a Twilight Sparkle amongst us and it took all too much effort to keep the weapons floating around to start casting light spells, plus it gave the earth ponies and pegasi a light source in a pinch.
Grabbing what I could, I hurried for the hanger where our Skyranger stood, finding the rest of the soldiers waiting outside the ramp leading up to the aircraft, probably for a pre-battle speech. Growling at them, I waited for word to come in that Interceptor 1 had managed to bring down the UFO before ordering them aboard and climbing in myself.
The Skyranger landed about five kilometres away from the site of the UFO crash, unfortunately on the side of a mountain where even the vectored thrust of the plane wouldn’t be enough to get it down safely, much less let it launch again once we were done there. With all the troops out of the Skyranger, I ordered the soldiers forwards in pairs, moving slowly through a forest that lay between our LZ and our target, with the pegasi hovering close to the main group. We didn’t need them being spotted by alien eyes and giving away our position to the enemy.
As we walked, I used my telekinesis to hold my pistol out in front of me, watching how the others held their weapons. The other unicorns did similar to me, something that would probably serve us well in the future. The other pony species seemed to be having problems though. Pegasi were gripping weapons in their fore hooves well enough, but hooves would be awkward on weapons built for claws. Earth ponies would have things even harder, having to hold their weapons in their mouths, making me glad I didn’t have to do that.
Twitching my tail in prebattle nervousness, I looked back up the mountain towards where the plume of smoke guided us towards the UFO crash site. What type of aliens would we encounter, I wonder, and why are they attacking our planet in the first place?
To be continued…
