Through the Mirror Pool

The Mirror Pool glistened in the warm bath of the beam of the afternoon summer sun, shining in pride that of a shade of deep-sea blue. A unicorn stallion looked within the waters. This stallion went by that of, Moonlight Prism. Moonlight Prism was an unsightly fellow ever since the accident. He bore a large scar over his lazy right eye; at least the eye was lazy now. You see, Moonlight had been in a terrible accident just over five years ago. He had been on the way to the Grand Galloping Gala with his fair lady, when the chariot they were riding in was struck by another, causing them to be thrust from a bridge, crashing into the mountains below. The accident had left him with a broken, bum foreleg, and one, now scarred, lazy eye. He was lucky however. While his wife was not. Furthermore, the accident also resulted in Prism’s beautiful wife, Shadow, to succumb to the good graces of death.

The scar and laziness of his eye, however, did not obstruct, nor restrict his vision; it improved it. The accident somehow had left good Ol’ Moonlight with the gift of second sight. A form of vision, in the form of an unsightly mysterious gift, which not only improved his outlook on the whole of Equestria, but the way he could…Communicate with it as well.

Communicating with the world, though, was a difficult task in itself. It required immense strength and concentration, resulting in lapses in memory and consistencies of time. Communicating could allow him to speak to the world, in an ancient language long forgotten to Ponykind. If he were to bring himself to a body of water – Any size body of water, he could bring forth the form of talk that would allow him to speak with the planet. It was in this form of speech that he could beg of the world to relinquish her soul, sending her back to him. So that he may hold her in his hooves once more. Brush her mane once more. And kiss her tenderly once more, the way he used to before the accident. Before she had been taken away from him.

One of the final instances was when Moonlight was angry at the world, hurt. He wanted revenge, satisfaction. He needed it. Craved it. Desired for it. Life was – After all – Worth nothing without his sweet Shadow Stream; he couldn’t live, could he?

Prism stared obtusely into the Mirror Pool, searching for his Shadow; the light of his life; the apple of his eye. He had heard of what the Mirror Pool could do. He heard that you can go through it and come out doubled. But what if he used his ability while staring into the pool? Would she come back? Could he make a copy of her come back? Searching the pool of vast emptiness, Prism watched, waited for her. For her soul – Her very being to return to him. But, alas, it never came to be. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be? Could it be? When somepony has been taken away from you, can you really get them back? Can you reach out through the world and talk to their soul, bringing it back to you.

Moonlight Prism would visit the Mirror Pool for the next three weeks, waiting for his love, Shadow. Always performing the same mundane routine: Watching and waiting. Just waiting. Until, finally, one day, while Prism sat idly by the reflective mass, he began to see something in that vast sea of nothingness.

It was Shadow.

She was calling to him. Beckoning to him.

“Come to me, Prism,” She said in a sultry voice.

It couldn’t be her, he thought. This has to be a dream, a figment of my inner imaginings. Or perhaps my dreams are coming true? Is she coming back to me? But it was her. And just as her beautiful, long blonde colored mane began to come into view, Prism reached for her, beckoning back. As he neared the pool, she sprung forth from the confine of the water. Wrapping both forelegs around his neck, she caressed him, dragging him in with her. He didn’t scream, nor did he shout. He just let himself be consumed by the warm, enveloping embrace of the Mirror Pool. He wanted to be with her again. To be in her embrace. The warm embrace that graced his soaking wet coat now. The feeling of love that overwhelmed him. The way she spoke to him, and assured it would be alright. But is it alright?

Gasping awake, he stared into the Mirror Pool, and awaited his wife, Shadow. For he loved her so, so very much.

Sometimes things are not as they seem. Nothing is ever as beautiful and peaceful as we’d hoped it would be. Sometimes life ends and we are forced to move on. But can we? Can we really move on from what we once loved, vowed to care for and protect. Perhaps? But can we let go in the end? Can we let the lives of the once who lived, Rest in Peace? Or do we need to find out a way to bring them back? Even if the consequence is great, and the feelings are strong, is it really important? Do we really want to put ourselves before someone else? Someone whom – No matter how long they lived, contributed to society in their own way. The way we all hoped to. The way we were meant to. And this is where I leave you: Do you think life is really precious? Or do you just waste it away? But one thing is not for certain: Will you be as Prism had, and become the inside out? Or will you be whom you were meant to be, and let it be as it should. So in the end, do you become The Inside Out?
