A Not-So Nightmarish Night
The moonlight shone down upon the field, illuminating the beautiful and grassy land with a subtle glow that spread as far as the eye could see, even stretching past the distant but visible mountains that neatly sat on the horizon. A thin fog lightly hung in the air, blanketing the perimeter with a faint tinge of transparent grey.
A large oak tree sat situated perfectly in the center of the wide-open area, its age evident from its very worn-out countenance. The large, tendril-like branches jutted out far and wide haphazardly, creating twisted and mangled shapes in the dark shadows it cast. A lone stallion sat underneath the thick branches, his body resting against the rough trunk of the tree in a sloppy manner.
Solis sighed softly, sleepily rubbing his eyes as he awoke from a deep, comfortable slumber. The drowsiness that followed just waking lingered deeply in his body, and he prudently stretched his back in an attempt to get rid of it. With a deep breath of moist summer air, he pulled himself up to his feet and unfurled his wings, gingerly stretching them in a long, drawn-out groan of satisfaction.
Once a lowly Solar Guard under Princess Celestia's powerful rule, Solis found himself stripped of his rank once the Nightmare Rebellion began.
Princess Luna had risen up against her sister with the intent to personally rule over Equestria and make the night eternal, taking on a new moniker in the process: the vengeful and evil Nightmare Moon. Wars and battles broke out between the Solar and Lunar guards all over Equestria, who fought under Princess Celestia and Nightmare Moon respectively, resulting in many lives lost, homes destroyed, and centuries of peace shattered.
During the initial uprising, Nightmare Moon's forces had compromised the castle's defenses and managed to capture many Solar Guards who were unfortunate enough to be on watch that night. Their fates were ultimately decided by the dark mare herself, who either sent them off to unwillingly fight against those who were once their close allies, or to be labor workers who would perform lackluster, colorless, and arduous chores each waking night; preparing meals for the dark Guards, crafting armor and weapons, and even building living quarters.
Solis had been on duty that night, and was among the Guards captured. His position, however, was now very different from the others.
A whole night spent fighting can build up a hefty amount of tension and stress in a mare's body, and Nightmare Moon was no different in that category. Out of the several of Celestia's forces captured, Solis had been randomly selected by the mare of darkness for a 'special' duty, in which he would be obliged to regularly tend to her desires when she would call upon him.
Solis had generally been resistant toward doing such acts with her, and attempted escape several times; he would exit through the window, bolt out the door, and, on one occasion, hide, tricking Nightmare and her guards into thinking he was already gone. Solis, seeing no point in fighting it anymore, finally gave in and accepted his fate, dreading what was to come. After the first few sessions, however, the former-Guard had grown very fond of the encounters, and would look forward to each time the mare called upon him.
Now, after a long and pleasant nap in the field, Solis was awake and had an uncertain length of free time to do as he pleased. Taking an observant glance at the environment around him, the young former-Guard began the short walk toward a pond nearby, which was a spot he liked to sit and think by.
As soon as he arrived, Solis kneeled down in front of the pond's edge and looked into the water. His short, blonde mane was messy and unkempt and his shimmering-white coat looked like it could use some decent grooming. His shirt was off as a result of the summer heat, showing off his averagely-muscular figure. He didn't take much care in keeping his appearance tidy anymore. There wasn't much point. Solis just stared, watching the wildlife do what it always did night after night. Such a simple life these animals had, he thought. His gaze dropped down to his distorted reflection in the water, the perception of it warped by tiny dancing ripples.
Two dark figures appeared on either side of Solis' reflection, making him instantly turn his head. There behind him stood two tall, muscular Guards, those of which naturally fought for Nightmare Moon. They cast a burning glare at Solis, an intimidating air radiating off of their being.
"Her Majesty calls upon you," one of the two grunted in a deep, gruff voice, spears in their muscular arms glinting in the moonlight, which shone off of it in a quicksilver glare.
Solis nodded shortly. "There isn't a need to be so formal, you know. I'm not one of the ponies you have to kiss up to to get paid," he responded coolly, looking directly into the eyes of the Guard.
"We live to serve Princess Nightmare Moon and the Lunar Forces," the muscular stallion grunted.
"And you're doing it without a desire to get paid. Right." Solis remarked with a roll of his eyes. "I know you guys are dumb, but I don't think you're quite such big lugheads."
"If it were not for Her Majesty's wishes regarding your current position, we would see to it that you be disposed of," the Guard growled, a venomous undertone detectable under his words as he glared down at Solis, who returned with a sly grin.
"I doubt that. She brought all of us here for a reason, and I don't think that she'd condone you killing me just because you find me irritating." Solis retorted, inciting an irritated grunt from the intimidating figure in front of him.
"Her Majesty does not wish to wait," he ordered shortly, gesturing for Solis to get up.
"Then we'd better not keep her waiting, huh?" Solis shrugged dismissively.
The Guard suddenly leaned forward, grabbed Solis around his arm and aggressively yanked him up to his feet. "Now!" he bellowed heatedly, roughly shoving the stallion forward.
Solis chuckled softly, looking back at the fuming Guard. "Easy, easy, I'm going!" He waved a dismissive hand and started off in the direction of Nightmare Moon's personal living space, the two broad stallions following suit close behind.
The walk to Nightmare Moon's living area was within a short distance of the pond Solis liked to sit by, decreasing the dark Princess' wait when she demanded his services. It could be faintly seen in the distance, the light fog nearly concealing what looked to be a small complex or a generously-large house. The structure was located in between a grove of dead trees much like the oak Solis earlier slept under, which radiated a shuddersome vibe that sent ominous and anxious chills up the spines of those who approached. The cause was mainly because of the notion that Nightmare Moon herself lived there.
The dark abode slid into better focus as the trio finally reached its front area. It stood tall and proud in comparison to them, looking well-kept and very intimidating. Two windows from high above glowed with a faint-blue light, like eyes menacingly staring down.
Solis glanced back at the Guards, who returned his gaze with a stony glare, before he stepped up to the large double-doors. The large, black-gilded aperture sat embossed with a shiny, metallic crescent-moon insignia. The hinges creaked against the frame rustily as Solis pushed them open.
The young stallion was met with little-visibility as he stepped inside and closed the doors behind him. A faint click sounded lightly behind him as the Guards locked him in from the outside, leaving him to dead-silence and little ability to see.
Though he could only faintly discern the environment around him visually, Solis had the layout of Nightmare Moon's home etched into his memory from so many instances of coming here. He cautiously started for the stairs, being wary of the steps and taking care not to trip.
Once he had fully ascended the dark staircase, Solis' eyes met a faint, rectangular-shaped outline of blue light from the cracks of a door. He slowly approached and knocked on the door three consecutive times.
In response, the door creaked open of its own accord, flooding Solis and the hall behind him in a pale-blue, but luminous light. He idly wondered where his Mistress was and why she wasn't there to greet him.
The young stallion took a few steps forward into the room, which was very large compared to the rest of the mini-mansion and stood out in size, very obviously towering over every other room.
The walls, painted a dark-purple, were lined with luminous white studs that formed accurate representations of the constellations in the night sky and cast the pale-blue glow, which soothingly illuminated the entire area. A small pond comprised the right side of the room, dark and wet stone making up the borders and floor of it and a small waterfall running endlessly, the gentle sound of moving water audible. Straight up ahead, the entire far wall was comprised of multiple window panes, with a large, alluring bed seated right in front. The moonlight shone in from the windows, covering the dark fabric on the bed in a pale, ghostly light.

"Tonight has been very taxing, Solis." Nightmare began. "Celestia is starting to use significantly more force in the war, and we were greatly unprepared for the tactic she used."
"What did she do, Your Highness?" Solis inquired uncertainly.
"You will request permission to speak." Nightmare said firmly, staring Solis in the eyes.
Solis tensed slightly and nodded quickly, saying nothing.
Nightmare took another sip of the amber-liquid, slowly draining it down to the bottom. She gave the glass a small tilt, swishing its contents around idly. "Ambush. As soon as our squad entered the area in which tonight's battle took place, they attacked from all around, having somehow hid themselves from us as we made our way over." She stared down into her drink thoughtfully, an astute expression on her radiant face. "It was something we should have been prepared for, naturally, but it was very unlike Celestia. She had never used such a tactic before, finding it dishonorable and unsporting, and now was an odd time to do so."
"As a result of being greatly under-prepared and taken aback by the ambush, nearly all of the group I fought with was killed. Several of them lost their lives because of panic, and understandably so. Not only was the sudden attack unexpected, but the numbers of the opposing force were much larger than that of ours." She sighed heavily, visibly unsettled. "We were greatly outmatched."
Solis opened his mouth to contribute his thoughts on the matter, but quickly closed it upon remembering what he was supposed to do. He was to please the Princess when she needed it, not converse, unless he was granted stern permission.
"Another observation that concerns me is that Celestia does not seem as determined on following her no-killing rule as she used to be," sighed Nightmare, laying her head back against the pillows. "Before, she would send strict orders to her Guards to stun and incapacitate only. Now, it's as though she has dismissively allowed them to do as they please. Her fighters did not hesitate to strike fatally, both with magic and with their weapons."
Solis opened his mouth again, but closed it hopelessly, remaining completely silent and listening to Nightmare's every word.
"For the first time since this war has started, I've had to flee with what remained of my squad." Nightmare sighed with exasperation, draining the rest of the liquid from her glass and setting it down on the nightstand.
"Maybe she's getting desperate."
The words escaped Solis' mouth before he could hinder them. He tensed up, biting his bottom lip upon realizing the mistake he made. Nervously bracing himself, the young stallion waited for the scolding to start, but none came.
Nightmare Moon simply surveyed him with her eyes, an expression of curiosity plastered on her face.
"Elaborate," she ordered seriously, watching Solis with great interest.
Solis breathed a silent sigh of relief and cleared his throat. "Well, Your Highness, this war has been stretching on for almost a whole year now," he began, his voice hesitant. "Your control over the night gives you an advantage, and your fighting tactics are aggressive and unrelenting. Maybe she's taken note of this and is desperate to gain higher ground, figuratively speaking."
Nightmare Moon nodded understandingly. "Possible, but I know Celestia. She is determined, but too pure of heart to enact such dispiriting strategies without proper justification."
Solis put a hand up to his chin thoughtfully. "What if she's trying to lower your numbers so that you'll have a harder time fighting her?"
"Again: she is too pure of heart. It is preposterous. She would never bring herself down to that level." Nightmare answered dismissively. "Besides, that is the strategy I have been using, and it has been quite effective."
"I see." Solis nodded. "I never spoke much with Celestia herself, so I can't give my opinion on the matter. The most interaction I've had with her was when..." he stopped shortly, knowing what the result of mentioning the past would be; the dark princess filled with anger and resentment at even the slightest acknowledgement of the fact that her and Celestia are siblings and once ruled together.

Nightmare, with a despondent sigh, rubbed at her temples with her fingers, eyes closed. "I'll need to inform all of my troops of the enemy's tactical-change and warn them to be weary and mindful while in combat, and possibly have them put in extra training time."
