Assassin's Creed IV: Black Wingby LightningDustChaptersSequence: 1Sequence: 2Sequence: 3Sequence: 4Sequence: 5Sequence: 6Sequence: 7Sequence: 1What was I doing? It’s all become so blurry, like trying to remember a dream from long ago. Pictures, faces, voices are all fading in my mind. A sickly feeling was pooling up in my stomach, I could barely keep my hooves from shaking and my jaw from chattering. If I was alone I might… No, that’s right. I wasn’t alone. Rainbow Dash was there, she was always there. I can remember the dirt under my hooves, the smell of pine and damp. I can feel a wing draped over me, pulling me closer into an embrace. It was strange but… comforting. Rainbow was looking at me again. I could tell by her eyes she was concerned about me. She was always concerned about me. They brimmed with confidence, but there was a certain sadness behind them. “You holding up, ‘Shy?” Her voice spoke. I can hear it. The breeze whistling past my ears, the soft patter of synchronised hoofsteps. Even as all these thoughts came rushing back I began to speak up. “O-of course. Right as rain.” She didn’t believe me, but it was good enough for now. She knew that I hadn’t taken the news well at first. I guess I’ve just become better at hiding things over time. Rainbow was only trying to help, she was always trying to help. My head was hung low. I could only watch as my hooves took each slow step forward. I knew we were nearly there - I could tell by Rainbow’s sudden hesitation. We’d come to a stop. She just stood there, looking blankly towards the oakwood door. Whatever weight had been hanging over her head had just come crashing down, rooting her in place. It had been weeks since any of us had set hoof inside Golden Oaks Library, not since that day. Twilight would have refused to leave if Pinkie hadn’t of been there. Then it was just life as normal to her. She fell back into the same routine as if it were any other day, although there were certain holes that could never be filled. I guess we all have our own way of coping. I gave Rainbow a light nuzzle, distracting her gaze from the looming door. “It’ll be okay. Filly steps…” She seemed to respond to that. Taking a deep breath, Rainbow edged herself towards the door. I felt her wing begin to tighten around me, pulling me as close as she could. We didn’t even have to knock, Twilight was already welcoming us in. “Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy! It’s about time you two showed up. Everypony else is waiting inside.” Her tone was surprisingly… energetic. She even had a spring in her step. Maybe spending time with Pinkie was helping her. Rainbow scratched the back of her head nervously. “Yeah, sorry about that. I was just... helping Fluttershy with some stuff.” I said nothing. She was uncomfortable enough already. Twilight seemed to accept this. She nodded and invited us in. “It’s fine. But now that you are here, I can reveal the news.” Rainbow relinquished her hold of me and withdrew her wing to her side. I already felt exposed. We both trotted inside to see all our friends waiting patiently at the table Twilight had arranged in the main room. Rarity and Applejack sat quietly at one end, smiling as we joined them. Pinkie could be heard from the other room as she hastily prepared some snacks for everypony. Rarity was the first to speak up, inviting me to sit down next to her. “Darling, it’s so good to see you here. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all been rather worried about you after everything.” I shook my head dismissively, but I still moved to sit down next to her. “No, I’m fine. I just… needed some time.” That wasn’t entirely a lie. Just as I sat down the others rejoined us, Pinkie bearing a variety of baked goods from cookies to cupcakes. I wasn’t feeling up to eating right now, but maybe soon. Twilight sat down and took the time to thank everypony for coming on such short notice. She made doubly sure to explain the importance of their next task. “Despite recent events, Celestia is more than confident that we’ll be able to cope with this next assignment. But this is more than just a simple test; this may lead us to the ponies who broke in and…” Twilight’s voice began to trail off, but we all knew what she was going to say. “Tried ta… murder ya.” Applejack spoke up. Even in moments like these she could be rather blunt. Or maybe she was just braver than everypony else. Twilight took a deep breath before continuing. “Yes, that. I will admit that I was rather distraught after what happened. Losing Spike was hard on me… on all of us. Had it not been for you girls I… I don’t know what I would have done.” Clearing her throat Twilight pressed on with the matter of hoof. “He gave his life to protect me, it only seems fitting that we be the ones to bring the ponies responsible to justice.” “So what did the Princess tell you?” Rainbow asked rather quickly, still choking a bit on her words. I knew she didn’t really want to talk about what happened, it all seemed so foreign to her. Twilight levitated out a small scroll tied in the tradition red ribbon and sealed by the royal crest. She laid it out on the table and began to read it out loud for us. My most Faithful Student, Once again you have my deepest sympathy for your loss. I know that Spike was a dear friend to you and I understand that the hole he has left may never again be filled. I also apologise for not being able to attend the funeral service, although I hear that everything went well. It seems even I cannot escape my responsibilities. This news may seem awfully soon, but we have managed to uncover some news that may interest you and your friends. The assassin responsible for Spike’s death and the attempt on your life has been confirmed to be part of an organisation operating to the far south, beyond the badlands and lying on the coast. This is sadly as much as we know as of this moment, but it is a lead I would like you to pursue. I have already sent officials who are awaiting your arrival. They will be there to assist in any matter necessary, be in diplomatic or otherwise. However, do not be surprised if the locals don’t take your arrival too kindly. They are a rowdy lot and need some familiarisation with Equestrian Law. An airship will be landing in Ponyville in two days. You have till then to prepare. Princess Celestia Twilight levitated the scroll away and began to address us all again. She seemed very determined, at least that’s what I noticed. Anyway, she has every right to be. “So that's our mission; to bring these criminals to justice and peace to the area.” Applejack raised a questioning hoof. “I still can’t figure out somethin’. Where exactly are we goin’? She didn't mention a name?” The others seemed to agree. Twilight seemed more than prepared with an answer. “Ah yes. I've done a bit of research, and I believe I've managed to work out where Celestia will be sending us.” She levitated a few random bits of paper from the opposite desk and flicked through them till she found what she was looking for. A map, only this one extended beyond any other map we’d seen before. It was certainly larger. I don’t know why, but I couldn't help but feel rather… small. It's silly really. Her hoof gestured to the far south of the map, an area filled with islands of various shapes and sizes. “Here it is. The Mareibbean.” And then I woke up. At least I think I did. The world still felt so surreal. I was laying on my back, I could tell that much. But before I even had a chance to open my eyes I felt the pain surge through my body. I felt like I was on fire. I could feel my head throbbing, my legs aching. My eyes nervously slid open and were greeted by glaring sunlight. I felt like they were being seared in my own skull. The pain began to subside, and slowly I began to feel the ground around me. It was… sand. There was sand everywhere. I was on a beach. I could even feel the tide lapping at my hind legs. I let my hooves sink into the ground and paw at the surface. It all seemed so real. My head was still in agony. It was like something was trying to escape from my skull, it was horrible. What happened to me? How did I get here? I can remember bits and pieces but it’s all so fragmented. I was a stranger in my own memories. Then my eyes shot wide open. Twilight, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack, Rainbow Dash… my friends. They were there, I was with them. Their faces are still fresh in my mind. I was… I- I can’t remember. There was a ship, and- I just don’t know. My head was burning. I just lay there, on the shores of a strange beach, looking up at the sky as if the rescue was already here. They would rescue me. I knew they would. Rainbow Dash would swoop in and rescue me, just like when we were fillies. Whatever happened to me… all I had to do was wait for my friends and they would explain it. We’d go home and this whole thing would be over. Click Hoofsteps, and breathing. Somepony else was here. They were right behind me. My mind didn’t know whether to feel panic or relief. I turned my head around slowly. My eyes were so wide that they might have popped out of their sockets. Right in front of me… a gun was aimed at my head. I stopped breathing. The mare was clutching the pistol in her teeth. I couldn’t see her face clearly past her hood, but I could see her chestnut mane and weathered yellow coat. She wore a white and blue outfit, some kind of robes, although the blue had long since faded to grey. She seemed angry. If her mouth wasn’t being used to hold her gun I swear she would be snarling at me. She was alike a wild dog, frightened and a long way from home. Surprisingly, I spoke first. “S-s-sorry, was there anything I could- help you with?” She spat at the ground and spoke a gristly and disgusted tone. “You’re one of ‘em, ‘aint ya? The Elements?” I gave a slow nod in response. I still don't know if her smile was a good sign. “You’re the one they was gonna kill. They put a pretty price on your little head.” Somepony wanted me dead..? Somepony wanted me dead!? I swore she chuckled at the thought. “Looks like you’ll be comin’ with me to Hoovana. After the… unfortunate loss of my ship and crew, I’ll be needing some coin to replace it with.” She ran her hoof along by jawline. I felt like a was going to be sick. “You’ll do just fine.” I couldn't do this. I just couldn't do this. I lurched out with my forelegs, catching the hooded mare off-guard and knocking the gun from her mouth. She tumbled head over heals into the sand. But she was... laughing? I couldn't tell. The sounds from her mouth were eccentric and pained. "Oh, you'll pay for that one you bitch." But she was down! I had a chance! My hooves hit the sand and started galloping inland, a lush and green jungle just ahead. I swear I'd never galloped faster in my life. If I could just fly over and- Bang! I fell headfirst into the sand. My entire body was filled with the same sickly pain, all of it pooling in my left wing. I’d been shot! Oh Celestia, I’d been shot! I could taste the iron in my mouth! My entire left side clenched up as I came to a tumbling halt. I was in so much pain. I could hear her reloading. Her pistol only had one shot, one chance to hit me. I still had time! I tried picking myself back up but my body kept protesting. My limbs felt week, my wing was on fire, my head still throbbed and moaned. I had to keep going. Somehow I had to find the strength. I did it! I was standing on my own hooves and I was moving! The jungle was just ahead! "Let's see ya try and escape with a bullet in ya skull!" Another gunshot ricocheted off a nearby palm tree only a few inches from my head. But I didn't stop to look back, I just kept going. I had to find somewhere safe. I could hear the hooded mare yelling after me. She was still coming! She wasn't giving up! I began to hear her hoofsteps chasing after me! I ran for my own life... because I knew my friends couldn't save it. Sequence: 2The rain was pouring now. The water chilled me to the bone and I could barely keep myself still. My jaw was chattering like a woodpecker and my hooves had gone completely numb. I was hiding but I never felt safe. I knew she would find me. She always found me. Even up in this tree I felt exposed and vulnerable. This mare wanted to kill me. This mare wanted me dead. A real pony wanted me dead. Hours had passed since I woke up on the beach and for hours the hooded mare stalked me though the jungle. She was like some kind of predator. I tiger stalking their pray relentlessly. I never thought anypony would actually be like this. How could anypony be so... cruel? It was so savage and strange and scary. It was beyond me. I was so innocent and naive, always sheltered from the world. I just... didn't know what to think. The rainwater stung as it trickled over my open wound. I clenched my teeth together to hold back the small squeal. I tried my best to clean it, but I how could I dress the wound here? Judging by the awkward way it hung on my side I could tell the bullet had broken, if not completely shattered, the bone running up my wing. The pain was only just beginning to numb. I prayed for healing. Dear Celestia, I hoped that it would heal. If it got any worse I… I could lose my wing. I’d never fly again. It seems like such a small thing, but being a grounded pegasus is just wrong. My wings make me who I am as a pony, even if I don’t use them often. Could you imagine a unicorn without their horn or an Earth Pony without their… legs? I couldn't live like that. It was just wrong. Alright, all I needed to do was wait till morning. Hopefully the storm will clear and the hooded mare will give up the search. I can properly clean my wound, dress it, and fashion a splint. After that all I had to do was go back to the beach and I’d be okay. Somepony will find me. Keeping this in mind gave me some confidence. Until I heard her again. She was so close, I could see her. The hooded mare, now soaked from head to hoof, was still trudging through the jungle with a scowl that could kill a pony. My entire body froze instantly. She still had her gun strapped to her side causing me to gulp. She was still calling after me, hoping that I would just give myself up. Part of me wanted to give up, to just beg for mercy and pity. Was I really that weak? I could hear my heart racing. My wing throbbed with every beat and blood poured from the wound faster than ever. I could feel the warm liquid trail down my wing and clot in my feathers. The hooded mare wandered bellow the tree I was perched in, sniffing at the air like some kind of animal. The hooded mare felt some warm and wet fall on her nose. She stuck out her tongue and licked at it. The bitter metallic taste of blood tainted her mouth. She slowly craned her head upwards as another drop of crimson fell on her face. She looked right at me… and grinned. “Gotcha.” I didn’t wait another second. Before I could even register what was happening I’d already leaped from the tree towards the ground. I landed with a thud and a groan as my wing bent is a cruel position. Without time to even think about it I was galloping off deeper into the jungle. The hooded mare gave quick chase and I could hear her wings begin to pound at the air. Rain stung at my face and tore at my eyes. I could barely see what was in front of me, let alone what direction I was heading in. I was cursed. My hoof caught on a vine and I suddenly felt myself tumbling head over heels into a small clearing. My face skidded into the mud giving me a number of small scratches. I felt tears well up when I felt the pain surge back into my wing. It was agony. Dragging my filthy body from the ground I tried to regain my stance and get a grip on my surroundings. The clearing was on the edge of some kind of cliff, a river running down the mountainside and falling into a small lake. I could risk the fall but I would almost certainly get hurt and lose my wing. The hooded mare landed in the middle of the clearing, dripping with water and licking her lips in anticipation. “No runnin’ now.” Her breathing was heavy and erratic. “Now I’m gonna fuckin’ enjoy this.” No no no, there had to be some way out of this! This wasn’t happening, I couldn’t die here! I began to back up towards the edge with eyes wide open in shock. "M-maybe we could come to some sort of understanding? I-I-I'm very sorry for... whatever it is I did." The hooded mare looked rather amused with this. "Ha, you've caused me enough trouble, now I think I deserve some kind of reward. They want your head? I'm gonna give it to 'em on a silver platter." She drew her sword with her mouth, a curved iron talon that glistened in the rain. She raced to a gallop and charged towards me with blade outstretched. I panicked. In one sudden movement I turned away from my attacker and raised my rear hooves in defence. I closed my eyes and bucked as hard as I could. My hooves made contact and there was a slickly cracking sound. The hooded mare went tumbling and her sword landed a few feet away from me. I dared open my eyes to look at her. A large gash ran down the mare’s collar and stained her white and blue robes a deep red. Her gun was nowhere to be seen, but I guessed it had fallen off the cliff when she fell backwards. The hooded mare’s eyes lit up like a fire. She stumbled back to her hooves and pulled out a jagged knife. She wasn’t giving up. She was pissed. "You fuckin'- I'll cut you open and rip your guts out!" She grasped the blade tightly in her mouth, preparing to strike again. This time I wasn’t going to just sit there. My eyes darted around the clearing till they fell on the mare’s fallen sword just a few feet away. I didn’t need to look back; I could already hear her galloping towards me. I tried to grab it but it was just out of my reach. Without a seconds hesitation I threw myself towards it, grasping the handle in my teeth along with a mouthful of mud and dirt. I spun back to face my attacker, but she was already on me, her knife aimed straight for my neck. The sword swung as I turned my head to face her and nearly fell from my mouth as I gaped with sheer terror. I closed my eyes and braced myself for the pain. But it never came… I felt the full weight of the hooded mare come down on me, but she was limp and ragged. I tried to shift her over but something seemed to stick. I opened my eyes only to be greeted by the bloody expression of the mare on top of me. I screamed. The sword had pierced through her throat, her body now hung lifeless and bleeding. I released the sword and let the body fall to the ground. I… I couldn’t take my eyes of her. She was covered in blood… I was covered in her blood. My hooves were soaked a sickly red. I killed her… I was a murderer… I couldn’t hold back the tears, and even as the rain continued to pour and the thunder roared louder than ever, I just sat there sobbing. I had killed another pony in cold blood. And I’d never felt more alone in my life. There was a cave nearby. Cold and miserable, I decided to take shelter for the rest if the night. But I couldn’t leave her here, even after what she tried to do. I dragged her corpse through the mud and into the opening. I tried to make her seem… comfortable. I propped her up against a rock as if she were still alive and needed the back support. It felt stupid, but I didn’t want to be disrespectful. She was still a pony after all, or was. There was no use trying to start a fire, not when all the wood around here is damp and rotted, but I was still shivering from the bitter cold. My eyes wandered over to the body of the hooded mare and I looked at her bloodied robes. “I guess s-she wont r-really need these an-anymore…” I stuttered in reassurance. I trotted over to her resting corpse and began to undress her. It all seemed wrong, but necessity outweighed these concerns. I did noticed a small white saddlebag buckled to her waist, too small for any provisions. Slipping a hoof in and had a small rummage through her belongings. A letter, and it had the royal seal. The red wax had the imprint of the royal trinity proudly over the words Potenia de Equestria. What did seem strange was a strange symbol, a cross, covering the mark of the sisters. I broke the seal and carefully slid out the letter within. The hoofwriting was smooth and elegant, clearly done by a unicorn, and the paper was a pure white with gold trimmings. Even in the dark I was just able to make out what it said. Miss Wallpole I was pleased to receive your letter a week ago. Rest assured that your decision to aid us was a wise one and will be well rewarded in future. I'm also glad to hear that you have information concerning our common enemy; I would much like to have this information. Come to Hoovana and we shall talk more about your future with our brotherhood and, of course, to receive your reward. We also have received word concerning the Elements of Harmony that may interest you. With regards, Governor Swift Torrent Information on the Elements? They had information on my friends? If anypony seemed to know something it was this pony. Slipping my hoof back into the bag I pulled out a small glass cube of some kind. It seemed so fragile and delicate and… beautiful in a way. It must have been part of the bargain. Whatever this cube was, Governor Torrent wanted it. I tucked the cube back into the bag along with the carefully folded letter. Returning to the task at hoof, I undid the last of the straps on her waist and slid the weathered robes from her body. They were still splotched with blood in places, but it was better than sitting here freezing to death. I just remembered how cold I was. Strapped tightly on her forelegs was some kind of hoof decoration or tool. I’d never seen anything like them before, but they looked rather complicated. I took these off and set them aside for now; they didn't really seem that important right now. After a few more minutes of delicately undressing the deceased mare and slipping into her robes, I was done. It was a surprisingly good fit, even leaving a place for my wings to fit through. It was a painful struggle to pull the robes over my injured wing, but I managed with only few tears. Tightening the last of the buckles and straps I started to feel a small amount of comfort, pushing any thoughts of the dead mare aside for this brief second. I reached back a hoof and slid the white hood over my head and shielding my eyes. I was going to get out of this, and if no pony was going to save me… then I would save myself. I was pulled out of the moment by a loud yawn. I realized suddenly how weak I was feeling and that my legs were barely supporting my own weight. The rush of adrenalin had truly worn of by this point. Gracefully, I let myself fall to the hard ground. It didn't take long before I was fast asleep, but all night long I could see her, Not Twilight or Rainbow Dash, not even the mare I had just murdered… I saw myself, covered in blood and clutching a sword. I looked right at me… and I was terrifying. Sequence: 3I think that’s when Twilight levitated that dusty book into the centre of the table. The leather cover was weathered and beaten like it had been thrown into the sea and fished out again. On the corner was a symbol of some kind. It was a cross with the words “Divinum Solis” inscribed beneath it. “This right here” Twilight gestured “is the Journal of renown general and philosopher, Chauncey Bullia. He served as Celestia’s second in command for nearly twenty years and was at the forefront of the campaign to unite Equestria’s provinces. He’s somewhat of an idol of mine.” Rarity raised a hoof out of curiosity. “That’s all good and well, but what exactly does this have to do with our mission to the Mareibbean? Do forgive me, but I'm struggling to see how the private writings of a historical dictator-” “He wasn't a dictator; he was an idealist! There’s a difference!” Twilight interrupted. Rarity simply rolled her eyes. “Be that as it may; how exactly does this relate to our current objective?” “I guess it doesn't have any direct relevance,” Twilight admitted reluctantly “but I found something fascinating that I wanted to share with you. It’s actually to do with this symbol right here. When I first encountered it I had no idea what it was supposed to be, but now I think I'm onto something.” “You’re not really making any sense, Twi.” Pinkie suddenly appeared next to the unicorn. “You said we were going on a mission for the Princess, but you said nothing about a history lecture.” She shuddered at the thought. "No offence, but I could never stay awake during lectures and the teachers would be all grumpy for some reason. I mean, what's up with that? I'm not the reason you're so boring Mr Teacher! You get a life!" “Yeah, what Pinkie said.” Rainbow spoke up. “Fine, have it your way.” Twilight groaned as the journal disappeared in a flash of light. “We’ll talk about this later if none of you are interested. Let’s just start getting ready for the mission. We have two days to prepare I still need to find someone to run the library while I'm gone.” “Yeah yeah, I’ll get to that later.” Rainbow Dash seemed to be back to her old self again, which I actually found comforting in a way. The quicker things went back to normal the better. “Come on Fluttershy, let’s go.” I never expected to see another pony on this island, but the next morning that’s exactly what I found. There were five ponies on the beach and all of them were dressed in red with gleaming steel armour. They looked similar to the Royal Guard in Canterlot actually, aside from the funny black hats. I couldn't see much from where I was hiding. Every time I tried to get a better look another branch would rustle or another twig would snap. I could hide in the bushes rather easily, but moving around was difficult. I was making too much noise and drawing too much attention. I wasn't very good at stealth, especially in this outfit. The guards were patrolling up and down the cove, except for one who I assumed was the captain pony by the size of his hat. I guess their rank was signified by the flamboyancy of their hat? They had a prisoner, maybe two. I was too far away to make them out clearly. If I could just get a bit closer, then maybe I could assess the situation better. Until then I just needed to lay low and keep out of sight. Something was off about these ponies, I could feel it. They also had weapons; swords, guns, although these guns were even bigger than the hooded mare's gun. I gulped slightly. I knew this was a bad idea, I knew this was going to get me killed, but I was so stupid. I needed to get to Hoovana to find my friends and these seemed to be the only living ponies on the island. I just wasn't sure- Bang! He just shot one of them! He just shot that pony! One of the prisoners collapsed in the sand while the other prisoner cried out in shock. I had to cover my mouth to stop myself doing the same. That, that… psychopath! If I could get my hooves on him! No no no, keep calm. No pony else needed to die, and I wasn't going to turn into a killer - more of a killer. I just have to think of a plan. I… I'm not really good with plans now that I think about it. Why couldn't I be a little more like Twilight for once? There was more yelling from the shore. The prisoner was pleading for her life, a gun pressed to her head. I had to move quickly or it would be too late for her. I needed an idea, I needed- A rock! That’s just what I needed! Alright Fluttershy, keep it steady. I just had to throw it into the jungle, distract some of the guards, and move in for the kill. Rescue, I meant rescue. Holding my breath I took aim. One eye pressed shut, I raised my hoof for the throw. Deep breaths. And… throw! The rock let out a solid thud as it collided with a tree. The nearby guards instantly turned their heads towards the sound. They gave each other a nervous look before three of them went to check it out. It worked! I was a genius! Oh, but I still need to rescue the mare! I started moving silently through the bushes, taking great care to where each hoof was placed. There were still two guards left, and one was carrying the gun. Okay, take out the pony with the gun first, then the captain. Right… how was I supposed to take them out? I wasn't going to kill them! I just had to incapacitate them. Maybe I could hit them in the head? A quick look and my lanky limbs quickly ruined that plan. Alright, let’s just try cutting off the airways. Think of it like easing them into a forced sleep against their will. One hoof over the mouth to keep them silent, another over the throat. Easy. I looked back towards the directing of the cave as I silently wished I had taken at least one weapon. If nothing, just to defend myself. I shook off the thought before it had a chance to grow. No weapons. If I was going to do this I was going to do it clean. I was nearing the first guard. There was a bush close to where he stood watch, the perfect place to pull him out of sight quickly. All I had to do was wait for the captain to look the other way. Simple. Celestia damn it, why wouldn't my hooves stop shaking!? I was close enough to reach him now, but the weight of the situation came down hard on my chest. My heart was racing but I couldn't catch my breath. My wings locked up, which sent a sharp pain through my left side. I was such a wimp. ‘Okay, get it together Fluttershy.’ I thought to myself. ‘Just think back; what would Rainbow Dash tell me to do? She'd tell me to toughen up and just go for it. Nothing was ever gained by being scared. I guess it worked for her, so why shouldn't it work for me?’ I locked my eyes back onto the guard like a tiger fixed on its prey, now filled with a new sense of determination. I leaped forward and one quick movement wrapped my right hoof tightly around his mouth while the other closed in around his throat. The bewildered stallion momentarily lost his balance which gave me just enough time to pull him back into the bushes. He struggled and struggled, throwing his free limbs back and forth. I held on with all my strength, even when his hoof connected with my jaw. After a few more seconds his struggling became weaker, his heartbeat became slower, and his eyes rolled up in their sockets. My hold loosened till his unconscious body fell to the ground with a light clang. I did it. I did it! Me! Fluttershy! I- Wait, was I celebrating!? I shouldn't be celebrating! Okay Fluttershy, calm and composed. None of the other guards had returned yet and the captain hasn't noticed the disappearance of the last guard. All I have to do is take out him, free the prisoner, and escape before the others return. Looking left and right I couldn't see any places where I could get closer. Maybe I could sneak up behind him and take him by surprise. I’d be more exposed in the open, but I didn't really have much of a choice. I took the chance. Step by agonizing step I crept out into the open. I felt vulnerable… I felt so vulnerable. All he had to do was turn around and I was done for. My limbs nearly seized up and I was barely half way there. I could see the prisoner clearly now. Her coat was a sandy beige, her mane a deep blue with a rose pink streak. I recognized her! Her face was so familiar! It was Bon Bon! What was she even doing out in the middle of nowhere? I would have thought she’d be busy running her shop back in Ponyville. Yet here she was thousands of miles from home on the same island I washed up on. Then she saw me. She looked right at me. Her eyes were filled with terror, but at the same time, hope. I could save her life and she knew it. I was going to save Bon Bon’s life! Wait, I think he was turning. The captain turned around to look at what had caught his prisoner’s attention. His eyes instantly widened when he found his guard missing and replaced by a hooded mare sneaking up behind him. I panicked. My hooves kicked off the ground and my entire body went lunging forward, crashing into the captain and sending him down into the sand. I’d caught him off guard, but he was fighting back. I narrowly avoided a swing to the jaw only to have another find its mark on my chest. I felt a solid crack as his hoof connected with my ribcage followed by a swift sickly pain. I didn't know what to do. I tried to get my hooves around his throat but he kept kicking me off. I wasn't as strong as him, I wasn't even close. If I couldn't think of something he was going to beat me to death. He landed another solid blow to the head which sent me reeling back. The world became blurred and hazy. I was barely able to keep my balance and stop myself falling to the ground. The captain stood back up and wiped his jaw. I could see the faint hint of a smirk across his face. Did he enjoy the idea of taking a life? Did everypony here? I began to back away slowly but he made little effort to pursue; he knew I wasn't going anywhere. I knew I wasn't going anywhere. I gasped for air as my lungs seemed to close up from within. I fell to my haunches. The captain spat at the ground, his mouth tainted with a hint of blood. He was coming closer. He trotted towards where I sat, bruised and defeated. Out of curiosity he pulled back the white hood shielding my face. “What a waste of good cargo.” He pushed my head down into the sand. I had nothing left to give, I couldn't resist. He pressed his hoof down further, driving my face into the ground. Bang! The captain fell to the ground… dead. It looked like his head had collapsed in on itself and scattered his brains in the sand. I only got a quick look at him before I felt something sickly in the pit of my stomach. The smell was unholy. Bon Bon was still just standing there, the gun clutched in her mouth, an all too familiar look of horror etched on her face. Did she murder him? No, this was different. That stallion was holding her captive and nearly beat me to death. She saved my life. I tried to stand up on my own legs but didn't get far. “Oh Celestia, I'm sorry. Let me help you.” The gun fell from Bon Bon’s mouth as she galloped to my side. A pair of strong hooves helped me to my own, giving me some support while I regained my strength. “We can’t stay here,” I weakly responded “The rest of the guards will be back soon... we need a place to hide.” No, I couldn't hold it any longer. Gripping my stomach tightly I lurched away from Bon Bon's grasp and emptied its contents into the sand. I knew I was in bad shape and it was only getting worse. "Do you feel a bit better now?" She asked in a softer tone. "Never better." My cheeks flushed red with embarrassment, or possibly nausea. It didn't matter, she probably thought I was a disgusting pig by now. Bon Bon's face suddenly lit up with an idea. “The ship. We can use my ship; we dropped anchor nearby.” A ship?! A way off this island!? I only just managed to contain my squeals of joy. “You have a ship? Like a real ship?" “Indeed, as real as they come." She gave a friendly wink "The Mareibbean supplies us with the best sugar in Equestria and we trade it for sweets. Usually my marefriend is the one making the trip, but she's been under the weather recently. There is just one small problem.” I began to stress a little, doing my best to keep it hidden. “W-what do you mean?” Bon Bon looked nervously at the body of her fellow prisoner. “Well, you see that mare?” I nodded. “That was the captain." I gulped. "Wait, y-you mean that-" "Also known as the only pony on-board who knew how to steer the ship.” Okay... okay... panicking slightly. No no no! I wasn't going to be stuck here for the rest of my life, not on this Celestia forsaken patch of sand full of deranged killers. There had to be a way. “Are you sure there’s no pony else who can steer a ship?” She shrugged reluctantly. “I guess I know a few things from watching her work, but barely enough to get us out of this harbour. Have you seen all the rocks? It's like a minefield out there. I'm not sure about this.” “Bon Bon, we don’t have any other options.” “Wait a minute; you called me “Bon Bon”. You said my name. How did you know my name?” She narrowed her eyes at me, looking up and down my robes and examining what little of my face could be made out from under the hood. In an instant a sudden wave of realization washed over. “It’s you, Fluttershy! How was I so blind!? The Elements of Harmony! I- I'm sorry I didn't recognize you with the fancy getup and the hood and all. If you’re here then that means-” My ears twitched at the sound of new voices. A quick turn of the head confirmed what we feared; the guards were returning. Bon Bon threw my hoof over her shoulder and took on most of my weight. “I have so much to tell you. There’s something you need to see, but we need to get back to the ship. Are you alright to walk? I’ll be right here with you.” I gave a small nod. I didn't feel very heroic or brave so I just gave up trying to be. Heck, even Bon Bon was outshining me. “Alright, let's keep moving." Sequence: 4What kind of a ship was this? There was no balloon, no propeller, nothing that even resembled an airship. How was this supposed to fly? The whole thing just bobbed around in the water like some kind of gigantic rubber duck. I guess it was some kind of ship that sailed across the sea, like the pirates used in old ponytales. I guess it sorta looked like an airship, only it was made completely of wood. Instead of a balloon there were these huge white sails flowing in the gentle wind like massive bed sheets hanging outside to dry. At the top of one of the masts flew the flag of Ponyville, a small piece of home away from home. “Like her?” Bon Bon spoke up. “One of the fastest little ships you’ll find in these parts.” “I- I thought you came here in-“ “An airship?” She cut in to which I nodded in reply. “Yeah, I guess sailing is a little old fashioned, but you’d be surprised how fast the weather can go to Tartarus around here. I’d rather be in one of those than an airship when a storm breaks out.” “I’d rather not be in a storm at all.” She nearly let out a chuckle at that. “Fair enough. Just trust me, she’ll get us safely home.” Home? I could have just gone home? Oh thank Celestia, I wanted nothing more than to just leave all this behind. I could go home to my animals and forget all this ever happened, safe and sound in my own little world. And yet. “I… can’t do that.” Bon Bon looked at me with such confusion. “What?” I let out a soft sigh in response. “I'm sorry, I appreciate everything you’re doing for me, but I can’t go home. My friends are still out there somewhere and this stallion might know where to find them.” I slipped out the letter from my saddlebag. “All I need is to talk to him, just for five minutes. All I need is to get to Hoovana.” Once we were on-board the ship Bon Bon took it upon herself to reorganise the crew. She had this aura of command about her, something I couldn't help but admire in her. I'd never really seen this side to the humble sweet shop owner. She was a stronger mare than I could ever dream of being. The crew were mostly stallions, all scruffy and filthy from weeks on the ocean. It was like I’d stepped into a prison with Bon Bon as their warden. Oh my, I sound just like Rarity. She would probably be horrified at the very idea of being on a boat with these “ruffians” and “hooligans”. I guess thinking about it cheered me up a bit. “Alright, that’s the easy part done.” Bon Bon was already helping me back to my hooves by the time she started speaking. “Now I have to navigate us out of this cove, and I'm not looking forward to that.” I cleared my throat before suggesting something to her. “Are you sure none of the other crew could help?” “None of them would know how to wipe their flanks if somepony wasn’t there to help them. Trust me on this, they do their jobs and nothing more. We give them the gold and they’re as happy as can be.” I guess there was no point in flogging a dead pony. We reached the helm of the ship and Bon Bon let me rest there for a while. I sat on my haunches, readjusting the improvised bandages on my wing. I needed some fresh medical supplies or it was going to become infected, if it already hadn't. “Um… Bon Bon?” The sandy yellow mare seemed quite focused on her pre-sailing checks, but she did seem to notice me. “Oh, what’s up Fluttershy?” I felt slightly guilty for ruining her concentration. “I'm sorry, did I break your focus?” “No no no, it’s fine. I'm just running through everything in my head. I'm not exactly what you would call good at this, so I guess it pays to be prepared.” She took her hooves off the wheel and turned to face me directly. “What’s on your mind?” “I was just wondering if you had any medical supplies tucked away somewhere.” I gestured to my bandaged wing. “It’s nothing major, it needs fresh bandages and-” “Say no more my friend,” She placed a hoof on my snout which quickly silenced me. “Head down to my quarters below decks; there should be a first aid kit lying around somewhere. While you’re there help yourself to anything else you need.” I smiled and nodded at this good news. Bon Bon helped me get to my hooves but I quickly found the strength to stand on my own. I was still in some pain but I could at least walk straight now. “It’s good to see you’re getting better. Come meet me back here when you’re done – we have a few thing to talk about if you plan on staying.” I wasn't a doctor, a nurse, or even a trained vet. Everything I know about animal and pony anatomy comes from experience and a bit of light reading. Rainbow Dash kept me busy with a bruised wing or rib every other month as she never really trusted Hospitals. I really don’t blame her, I’m scared of hospitals too. With their needles, tubes and all kinds of things being put into places. Besides, it gave Rainbow Dash and I a chance to catch up, something we haven’t been doing much since we left Cloudsdale. I let a smile tug at the corners of my mouth. I could always count on my friends for a smile, even when they weren't with me. With my wing disinfected and re-bandaged I felt a small sense of pride in my work. Sure, I wasn't much of a hero or a fighter, but I wasn't half bad at patching up a few cuts and scratches. The hard part was removing the bullet fragments. The small iron pellet was lodged in Ulna, also causing some damage to the Radius. It wasn't exactly… pleasant. One of the crew came in to check on me when they heard screaming. I made sure to keep the bleeding under control, although I may have ruined a few tablecloths in the process. I’m sure Bon Bon won't mind. That mare was an enigma to me. We lived in the same town and I still can’t remember having a conversation with her. I just thought she was a quiet little shop keeper who never talked to anypony other than Lyra Heartstrings - I think that’s what Rarity said. I bet she thought the same thing about me; little old Fluttershy who can’t even introduce herself without running and hiding. She was strong, far stronger than me. She had the courage to pick up the gun and shoot that guard before he nearly beat me to death, something I could never do. But you already did… No! That was an accident - a mistake. I never meant to kill her, it just… happened. I’m not a killer. She was going to kill me anyway! If I just sat there and did nothing I wouldn't be standing here! I’m not a bad pony! Ow, my head hurts. “Great, you’re already done.” Bon Bon greeted me as I walked the stairs back up to the helm. “We've just reached open water, and in one piece I might add.” She looked very impressed with herself, and to be fair, she deserved to be. I responded with a warm smile. “I knew you could do it Bon Bon. You’re certainly my hero today.” The sandy yellow mare let a light blush creep onto her face. She dismissed my compliment with a wave of her hoof. “Oh stop it, I’m not exactly hero material. Nice of you to say though.” I noticed her eyes wander to my newly cleaned and patched wing. “How are you feeling? You gonna be okay?” I gave a quick nod. “I should be fine in a few weeks, maybe a month. It could have been worse though; I could have lost the wing altogether.” “Well you've certainly dodged a bullet there.” Bon Bon couldn't hold back a few small giggles, and neither could I. Before we knew it we were laughing out loud, surely attracting the attention of the crew. Bon Bon wiped a small tear from her eye. “Too soon?” I shook my head. “No no no, I needed a laugh. It was nice.” “Oh come one, it wasn't that funny.” I laughed at this as well. “Alright alright, let’s just leave that behind for now. I do have something I need to show you.” Her tone suddenly shifted to a more serious, yet sympathetic one. “W-what do you mean?” “Just let me show you.” Bon Bon left the wheel and trotted over to chest sitting on deck. It wasn't anything special, just a wooden box with an iron lock. She reached into her mane and pulled out a small copper key, a perfect fit. When the chest opened it was difficult to make out what was inside. Bon Bon’s held in her hoof a necklace of gold, the craftsmanship unlike any other piece. In the centre was a pink gem, flawless in every way and cut into the perfect shape. The gem was cut into the shape of a butterfly. “T-that’s my element!?” I couldn't help but sound panicked and confused. What was it even doing here? How did Bon Bon find it? Where were the others? The list was growing my the second. Bon Bon let out a deep sigh before continuing. “I know what you must be thinking, but it’s a long-” “How!?” I interrupted, quickly covering my mouth with my hoof. “I-I’m sorry.” “It’s okay. Bon Bon waved it off. “You have every right to be worried. Let’s just sit down for while and I’ll explain what I can.” She signaled for one of the crew to take the wheel. All they had to do was keep her going straight; not a difficult task. Bon Bon led me back into her quarters and invited me to take a seat next to her. She quickly noticed that I couldn't take my eyes of the Element she held in her hand. “You can look after it.” She placed the necklace gently down next to me. “It is yours after all.” I just kind of looked at it for while, unsure what to really say first. “What happened?” Bon Bon leaned back in her chair, looking off at a distant wall. “Well, I guess it started when that storm hit. The seas were calm and the wind was gentle, then it just… came out of nowhere. The captain managed to steer us clear of the worst of it, but we saw a couple of Royal Ships go down near the coast. It was like standing in the middle of war-zone, a war between the seas and the skies. I guess we were just unlucky to be caught in the crossfire. “We dropped anchor nearby so we could assess the damage and check the cargo. We took some losses but it could have been far worse. We sent some of the crew to scout the area, you know, for Tribal Ponies or wild animals.” “Tribal Ponies?” “Just a bunch of ponies stuck in their old ways, not very friendly to outsiders.” She chuckled a bit when I hid behind my mane. “Don’t worry about it, you’ll probably never get to see them. They live deep in the jungle, far away from any other pony. “So anyway, the crew who we sent to go scouting eventually returned with a chest. It was a beautiful thing, covered in gold and gems. Apparently they just found it washed up on the beach along with other pieces of wreckage. All it took in the end was a bit of magic to get it open and that’s where we found the Elements of Harmony.” No, that wasn't right. “Do you mean all of them?” “Yes, they were all there. They crew were talking about how much they’d sell for before I stepped in and confiscated it. I knew exactly what they were and I knew that you guys would be looking for them. I hid it in my quarters, safe and sound. But then…” She trained off, her gaze falling to the ground. “What happened to them?” Another sigh. “The Royal Guard happened. They boarded the ship and forced me to reveal the location of the Elements. Somehow they knew I had them, they just knew. I- I had no choice. I gave them five of the Elements and I hid the sixth. I told them I lost the last one but they didn't believe me and dragged me and the captain to shore. They interrogated us, beat us, even killed the captain. They never told us why they wanted the Elements, but they did mention a large reward from some sort of Governor. I had to keep the Element safe but I didn't know how long I could last. “That’s when you showed up.“ Oh no, not this again. I covered my face as my cheeks flushed red in embarrassment. “SorryaboutthatItwasamistakeI’mnotverygoodatthis…” Bon Bon just laughed. “Hey, don’t worry about it. What you did out there was brave and selfless - and, hey, you saved my life out there. That makes you a hero in my books.” She thought I was a hero. My blush increased and I refused to uncover my face. I could still hear Bon Bon giggling like a school filly. “That’s basically everything. Like I said before, I don’t know every detail. I don’t know why this Governor wants the Elements and I don’t know what happened to your friends. That's all I can say.” She looked visually apologetic, but was quite stern in her words. “What I can do, however, is help you.” “What do you mean?” “You’re looking for your friends in Hoovana?” I nodded in response. “Then you’ll need to know how to survive in this world.” Sequence: 5“Alright, remember how it goes. Step back, step right, parry, kick, step forward strike. Just like we’ve done twenty times now.” I was starting to doubt Bon Bon’s teaching methods after she made me go hoof-to-hoof with a trained sailor with only half an hour’s worth of combat training. Sure, we were only using sticks, but those sticks really hurt! I had bruises all over my flank! Not to mention that I was being constantly knocked to the ground and humiliated like a schoolyard filly. Oh great, here he comes again. Was there no end to this?! The sailor took a swing, narrowly missing my face as I took a step back. He was quick to recover and lunged out to strike me in the chest. I kicked my legs out to the side and darted to the right, the sailor losing his balance as his swing hit nothing but empty space. What was next? Oh, parry! The sailor didn’t look very happy with the sudden turn of events. He spun around and attempted to strike at my forelegs with his stick. I parried! My stick intercepted his strike and forced him to lose balance. I’d never actually gotten this far in the training. Without thinking I gave his hind leg a swift kick which sent him tumbling to the ground. His stick fell from his jaw and rolled down the deck and far from his reach. I had done it! Now to strike! I raised my stick and prepared to bring it down on his head. Ha ha, now he’ll know what it feels like to lose! This is what he gets for being such and big, dumb, mean- “Whoah girl, he’s down.” Bon Bon said as she stepped in-between me and my fallen opponent. “You’ve won.” I let the stick drop from my mouth, taking a step back while I regained my composure. Closed eyes, deep breaths, calm and collected. But then I realized… I was trying to hurt him, even after he was down. I was trying to beat a pony while he had no means of defending himself. “I- I… ” I felt like I was going to have another emotional breakdown in front of everypony. “I’m so sorry.” Bon Bon placed a comforting hoof on my shoulder, easing my nerves for a brief second. “After the beating he gave you, he probably deserved a lot worse.” She and the sailor shot angry glares with one another. “Most ponies wouldn’t have thought twice about pounding his sorry flank, but you have to think differently.” Bon Bon took my hoof and began to lead my back towards the helm, her smile slowly fading as her gaze wandered off onto the horizon. “At some point, Fluttershy, you might be forced to… end another pony.” The impact of her own words suddenly hit her and she quickly stepped back. “I’m not saying that you will, it’s just that- Look, when that day comes you need to remember that we only kill when we have no other choice. Only when there’s no other chance of survival. Understand?” I nodded, although I could feel my hooves beginning to shake and my body start to quiver. Bon Bon let out a deep breath she was holding, relaxing slightly. “Good. Maybe we should write down some guidelines - a code of sorts. Go get something to eat and meet me in my quarters. We need to lay down some rules if we’re going to go looking for your friends.” She sounded just like Twilight. “Rule… number… 1.” Bon Bon recited with each flick of the quill. Her hoof- err, mouth writing wasn’t the smoothest I’d ever seen. It’s not ‘Rainbow Dash’ bad, but it’s certainly up there. Bon Bon rested the quill back in its inkwell while she took a moment to think. “Okay, how about avoiding the local guards? Keeping a low profile and all that?” “I thought the guards were supposed to protect ponies?” “Back in Canterlot they were, but these ponies are under the employment of the local Governors. They’re bullies and murderers who care more about coin than upholding the law.” Bon Bon grew visibly angrier with each word, which caused me to shrink down a little behind her desk. “But… a pony’s a pony. We don’t kill them unless, you know, they give us no choice. For now let’s just stick to avoiding them.” She picked the quill back up and scribbled on the first rule. “That brings us to rule number two though; don’t kill unless you have no other choice.” I nodded again, watching as she took a great care to emphasize the word “NO”. I couldn’t kill again. No pony could make me endure that hell again. The knowledge that you could ended a life with your very hooves was unbearable. The blood of a pony was stained into my coat and no water could wash it off. I would have spoken up but I knew exactly what Bon Bon would say - ‘It gets easier over time.’ I didn’t want it to get easier, I didn’t want to kill at all. “You still there, girl?” Bon Bon waved a hoof in front of my face, causing me to blink a few times in confusion. “Wha- Oh, sorry. Yes, only when necessary.” She seemed to be okay with that response, quickly finishing off the line with a flick of the quill. Small droplets of ink blotched the desk, staining the otherwise clean surface. “Rule three,” Another flick, another splotch on the parchment. “Stay away from pirates and thieves.” Pirates?! Pirates!!! There were pirates here! “W-w-what do you mean p-pirates?” Murderous, cutthroat, terrifying pirates! I was hyperventilating, I couldn’t stop it! “Whoa whoa whoa. Fluttershy, calm down. You’ll probably never see a pirate in the city. They just hang around that pigsty called Neighssau and some of the naval trade routes.” She placed a comforting hoof on my shoulder, attempting to ease me back into my chair. “You’re perfectly safe in Hoovana. It’s well guarded, well-funded, and no pirate is setting hoof in that place.” I clasped my chest and tried to slow my breathing. My eyes were so wide I was afraid they would pop out of my skull. “You… you promise?” I pleaded with her. The sandy yellow mare hesitated for a moment, closing her eyes as she spoke. “I promise that you won't see any pirates... but you have to promise me something. You’ll do exactly as I say; no wandering off, no causing trouble, and no making friends.” Nothing much really happened after that. Bon Bon ended up spilling ink all over the parchment so we scrapped the idea of a written code. I think I remember most of the rules anyway, all I had to do was listen to Bon Bon and stay down. I don’t feel ready, but having Bon Bon around made me feel a bit safer, maybe even slightly confident. I reckoned I could get a decent night’s sleep at this rate. I carefully rested myself down on the old mattress Bon Bon the crew had dragged out for me. I could ignore all its bumps, lumps, and broken springs, I could ignore the crashing of waves against the hull, I could even ignore the racket of the crew as they squabble and laughed above deck. After all, I had a bed; a real bed. ‘Sure beats a cave.’ I thought as I made myself comfortable, trying my best to avoid lying on my injured wing. I elected not to use the blankets given to me (they looked really itchy and filthy), instead keeping my robes on for the night. They were surprisingly warm and comfortable, and didn't restrict mobility. I could see why the hooded mare would choose to wear them; they would have been great for travelling or adventuring. I guess that’s what she was - some kind of adventurer. Something jabbed at my side. I let out a slight yelp as I felt the object press into my bruised ribs. Oh, I think I was still wearing my sword. I sat up in my bed as I unbuckled the hilt, a reasonably difficult task for a pony without magic. It wasn't a very elegant sword, just an old cutlass Bon Bon found lying around. The blade was dull and lifeless, none of its original sheen left. The hilt itself was made of iron and wrapped in beaten and weathered leather. She thought it would be a good idea to have it on me, just in case. I hope I never really have to use it. I softly placed it on the floorboards and settled back into my comfy position. My mind wandered to the next day when we land in the city, thoughts of both hope and doubt surfacing as I tried to formulate some kind of plan. Did I even have a plan? Maybe I should just listen to Bon Bon, do as she does. She always knows what to do. I let my eyes close slowly. I wonder what Twilight would have done? She was always the mare with the plan, always thinking before rushing in. I’d give anything for her help right now. Maybe I’ll see them again tomorrow. “Land ho!” Came the cries from on deck, although I was reasonably stunned to learn that sailors actually did say that. After washing my mane and coat I cantered back up to the main deck, Bon Bon already there waiting for me. “Great, you’re up.” She greeted me warmly. “Look, you can see the city from here.” I trotted up to the edge of the deck where Bon Bon stood. I peered over the railing and far into the distance. The morning had brought a fresh mist over the water, the rising sun painting it an orange hue. The wine dark waves glistened and shimmered in the light, like a sea of gems or rubies. Barely visible through the mist I could make out the silhouette of the city, becoming clearer as we drew nearer. The tiled rooftops glowed a bright orange and there were so many towers and cathedrals stretching towards the sky. The whole city was encompassed in a ring off lush hills and forests, the sun lightning them up like a great bonfire. It was beautiful. “Welcome to the city of Hoovana, Fluttershy - the crossroads of the Mareibbean. I’ll take us into port just over there and we can start unloading my cargo.” She turned back towards the helm. “After that’s done, we can look at meeting with this Governor of yours.” Bon Bon trotted back up the steps while I just continued to rest on the parapet, taking the weight off my aching hooves. It didn't bother me, I was excited. We were finally here, the one place where I could find answers. Soon we would meet with the Governor, he would tell us where to find our friends, we pick them up, I get to be a hero for once, Rainbow Dash will think I’m cool, and hey presto, we’re off on our merry way. I could already imagine it. Rainbow Dash might have even called me “cool” or “awesome”. Ooo, I liked that. Fluttershy the Awesome; a true hero of the Mareibbean. I wasn’t scared of pirates. ... Okay, that was a lie. I- I was terrified of them, but I wasn’t always like that. Rainbow Dash and I used to always pretend to be pirates back when we were fillies. Captain Rainbow "Dasher" and her trusty crew. Okay, that was a lie as well. I wasn't part of her crew; I was just the victim, the damsel, the prize. I would get into trouble and Rainbow would come swinging in to save me, picking me up in her hooves and flying to safety. But it wasn't Dash’s fault, not at all. She offered for me to join her crew but I always said no. I don’t really know why - it just felt wrong. Dash was the hero, not me. I always thought she would have been a great pirate. She was brave, heroic, and strong. That’s what we always though pirates were supposed to be; symbols of freedom and adventure. It was a stupid dream… And sometimes you've just gotta wake up. Sequence: 6Finally! Off that Celestia forsaken ship. I could just kiss the ground! Bon Bon and her crew were unloading cargo and I was still trying to regain my bearings. A couple of days out at sea can be … disorientating. Your legs wobble and groan, your stomach churns like the water around you, not to mention that the ground is always moving like some sick carnival ride you can’t get off. I thought I’d just avoid ships from now on, just to be safe. The first thing I noticed about Hoovana was the piercing glare of the sun. I covered my eyes with my hoof as the light tore into my pupils like daggers. I flicked on my hood and I was finally able to see through the bright haze. It was already mid-morning and the city was in full flight. Ponies of all different shades and colours, even a few zebras, walked the cobblestone streets of the shorefront, some stopping briefly to idly browse the market stalls. Many ponies were dressed in extravagant outfits with cloaks, leotards, funny hats, and anything else you could think of. It was like I’d accidentally stepped into a school play. There were also plenty of guards. They marched in pairs up and down the street, keeping an eye out for any trouble makers. Some of them were perched on roof tops, they were big, but each carrying an even larger gun. All of them were dressed in the same steel armour, although their underclothes were a bright yellow with red trim. I made a mental note to avoid these ponies at all times. Bon Bon said they couldn’t be trusted and I wasn’t about to question her judgement. I kept my head low, hiding my eyes under my hood while still making sure I knew where each guard was. “Alright, we’re just about done unloading.” Came a familiar mare's voice from behind me. “Let's leave the stallions to their work and we can get started on this mission.” I momentarily drew my gaze away from the guards as I spoke. “Alright, we should start by locating the Governor’s Villa. It shouldn’t be too hard, we just need to-” “Oi, you lot!” Came a gruff call. Both of us quickly turned to see two of the guards approaching, both of them looking at us like we were common trash. “Is this your shipment of goods?” Bon Bon wasn’t having a bar of it. “As a matter of fact it is. What about it?” The larger of the two guards narrowed his eyes as he responded. “Keep up that attitude and it’s a night in a cell for you. The harbour master doesn’t have either of you two on record as the owner of this ship - we’re here by his request.” “What? I am the co-owner of this ship. Well, we sort of own this ship, and only for certain times in the year.” “The owner of this ship, as shown on our records, is one Lyra Heartstrings. Since neither of you are the owner of this ship the guard will be stepping in to investigate.” Bon Bon was stunned on the spot. “You- you can’t do that! This is my ship and my cargo!” The other guard had a small chuckle, earning a death glare from the distressed mare. “Technically it’s our cargo now. We’ll be relieving all your assets till we’re satisfied with everything.” He raised his hoof and signalled a bunch of guards to start hauling away all of Bon Bon’s crates of goods. Bon Bon looked like she was about to have a mental breakdown. “You- you can’t just- Arrgh!” She turned away in a huff, storming back towards the ship. “You coming, Fluttershy?” She said with a slight tinge of venom in her voice. “Go on, scamper.” One of the guards joked followed by a chorus of laughter from the others as I quickly turned and cantered back to Bon Bon’s side. She was pacing up and down the deck in an attempt to cool her temper. Her eyes were bulging and the vein on her forehead looked like it was going to burst. “Those prissy, treacherous, conniving, little … bastards! They think they’re so untouchable; oh, I’ll show them just how untouchable they are!” Her outburst managed to gain the attention of much of the ship. I silently tiptoed closer, trying my best not to set her off again. “It’s okay Bon Bon, we can try and get your stuff back.” She laughed at that. “Fat chance. Even if you find out where they’re hauling it, what are you going to do? Reason with them? They’re a bunch of bullies who only listen to gold, something we don’t have.” Gold? Wait, that gave me an idea. “Or we could do just that.” I had an idea, and it was a great idea! Oh yes, this was totally going to work. “What are you talking about? That cargo was the only way of making that kind of money, and it was just taken by those thugs.” “But,” I pulled out the letter from my saddlebag, the one from Governor Swift Torrent. “I know a stallion already willing to give us the gold.” Bon Bon suddenly realized what I was trying to say, and she wasn’t happy. “No, you mean-?” “One of us pretends to be “Miss Wallpole”, makes the exchange, and we leave with the reward. Once we have the gold we can pay for the guards to release your… your… What exactly are you selling?” “Alcohol, rum, booze, whatever. We receive the shipments of sugar, refine it, and sell it for profit. I bet those pigs are already getting piss drunk, wasting all my hard work and coin.” Bon Bon flicked off the question. “Back to the matter at hoof; Fluttershy, that’s a crazy plan. How do you know that no pony at this meeting hasn’t already met this “Wallpole”? I’m not going to jail just to get my goods back.” I hadn’t thought about that, but I felt sure of the plan. I needed the information and she needed the gold; it was the best plan we had. “Don’t worry, there’s no chance of you getting caught, because … because I’ll do it.” This caught Bon Bon off guard, even forcing her to take a couple of steps back. “You’re serious?” I nodded. “Yes. I’ll pose as Wallpole, find out the location of my friends and the Elements of Harmony, and get the reward.” Saying it outloud gave me a rush of confidence; I liked it. “No, I wont let you risk yourself for that.” Bon Bon said in a serious tone, putting her hoof down as if to draw the line here. “Remember the rules? Not to mention you are an Element of Harmony. What happens if they discover who you are? There’s a bounty on your head, remember?” “I know the rules and I know the risks, but we don’t have much of a choice.” She didn’t seem to respond for a while. “Are you with me?” She took a deep breath before looking back up. “Fine, I’m in. But I’m going to be the pony at the meeting. I won't let you risk your life again, especially since you’re one of the Elements. You still have a price on your head..” “No, I can do this!” I covered my mouth when I realised how loud that actually came out. “I- I mean … sorry. This is something I have to do. I have so many questions that need answering, and I think this pony might be the only one who can. I need to do this.” “I still don’t feel good about this,” Bon Bon added. “But if you think you’re ready then there’s not much time to waste. Let’s get moving.” ‘La Villa de Oro’ - House of the Rt. H. Governor Swift Torrent de Hoovana That’s what the plaque said. It honestly didn't take us too long to find this place considering how big the villa was. The whole area was surrounded by a large sandstone wall, so big and tall you could see it from the middle of the city, and the entrance blocked by an even more impressive gate. Oh, did I tell you about the gardens? The gardens inside were lush and filled with wild flowers, trees and beautifully carved statues. So many shades of purple and blue and green. There were birds and monkeys and even animals I’d never heard of before living in there. It was so wonderful and breath taking. I pressed my eyes to the bronze gate as I tried to get a better look. Bon Bon gave an impressed whistle. “Nice wall.” Reluctantly I peeled myself away from the bars and returned to the mission at hoof, but not before letting out a deep sigh. “I guess it’s time.” “Nervous?” Bon Bon asked, maybe in some attempt to lighten the mood. What I wanted to say was ‘Are you kidding?! I’ve never been more nervous in my life! I’m under prepared, under equipped, and about go strolling into Bad Guy Central without so much as a real plan and you’re asking if I’m a little nervous?!’ “A bit.” I replied. Bon Bon could tell I was flipping out on the inside, I knew she could. “Alright, just remember what we talked about. If something goes wrong just … get out of there as fast as you can, alright?” No backup. “I’ll just have to improvise.” She seemed satisfied with that, but I could still see the worry in her face. “Good. Ready to get started?” Okay, I just had to calm down. I had to do this, there was no other option. I was doing this to save my friends and to help Bon Bon, I couldn’t let them down. This was my chance to be the hero. “I’m ready.” Once I’d presented the letter to the guards the gate was opened and they allowed me to pass. They seemed a bit confused at first by my... physique, but my outfit was apparently all the proof I needed. I was inside the grounds, slowly making my way up the main staircase to the main courtyard where the guards had instructed me to head. I kept my hood up and shielding my eyes just in case any of the ponies here had met Miss Wallpole before. My heart was beating through my ears, thundering around my skull and disorientating my vision. My blood was surging through my system and a hundred miles per hour, my body ready to turn and flee at a moments notice. I could hear new voices from the top of the stairs. Just out of sight I could hear a group of ponies talking and chatting. I couldn’t really make out anything, but they sounded like they were having a good time. One last deep breath and here I go. I froze, my hooves locked in place. I couldn’t go up there, I couldn’t. They would have recognized me as soon as I showed my face. I- I couldn’t. I needed to breathe. No, I could do this. I just needed to be more careful. If any pony recognized me … it was all over. My eyes darted towards a nearby bush, a place where I could hide just for a moment. Quietly I galloped towards it, out of sight of the guards. My mane was a dead giveaway, it had to go. I guess… it had to go. I kept telling myself this was necessary but my mind wasn’t listening. I grabbed my hood and pulled it back to expose my tangled pink mane. Another deep breath as I drew out the cutlas Bon Bon gave to me, taking a small moment to gaze at the dull bladed edge. It was better than nothing. I grabbed a hooful of my mane and raised my cutlas just above where I held it. Without giving myself time to object I cut through the hair with relative ease, locks of pink falling to the dirt. I quickly grabbed another hooful, and then another, and another. I held my eyes shut, like I was trying to stop myself from crying. I think that was it. I tentatively ran a free hoof through my new mane - It wasn’t my best work. It didn’t feel any longer than Rainbow Dash’s, and probably even messier. I knew it would grow back eventually, it always did, but it didn’t make me feel any better. Oh great, I still had the tail left to do. I let out a reluctant sigh as I positioned myself so I could have a better reach. It was… awkward. I would have tumbled headfirst out of the bush if I hadn’t managed to quickly regain my balance. It was a mess when I was finished. The ends were frayed and jagged, still slick with salt from days at sea. It wasn’t pretty, but the alternative was being recognized and possibly captured. I still had to dispose of the hair, which wasn’t very difficult; I just had to bury it here and nopony would find it. Okay, I felt slightly more ready at this point. Another deep breath as I stepped back out into the open and quickly making my way back to the path. I could still hear those ponies in the courtyard just up ahead, the Governor might be up there with them. Okay. Okay. It's now or never, Fluttershy. Sequence: 7The first thing I heard was the sound of soft cello music filling the air. I could already feel my body relaxing as it teased my ears with a sense of serenity. The whole courtyard was paved with a brilliant white marble, all of it surrounding a gazebo covered with wild flowers. All the tables were neatly laid out with all these fancy snacks and sandwiches, the sight making my mouth water slightly. This would have been the perfect place for a fancy tea party. That would have been so much fun, all of us together again. The small party was filled by about six different ponies, most of them looking very noble and regal with fancy clothes and manes. There were a couple of them wearing some kind of blue military uniform, almost like the ones from Cloudsdale. Oh gosh, I must have looked like some sort of tramp compared to them. I bet it was the mane, I really didn’t like the mane. I guess it wasn’t t- ... Spitfire was here. Spitfire and Soarin’ were here. Spitfire and Soarin’, the same two Wonderbolts who had seen me multiple times! What were they even doing here?! Did the Wonderbolts even perform this far away from Equestria? It didn’t even matter, I was screwed. Is that..? Oh Celestia, don’t tell me- Yup, it was Fancy Pants. The plan was ruined, everything was over, all of it for nothing! I was going to get caught and imprisoned and sold into slavery where I’d work the fields till I died of exhaustion! No no no, he saw me! I’d been spotted! Abort mission, abort mission! “Ah yes, I believe she’s finally arrived.” Wait, what? “Over here, my dear.” Fancy Pants called me over, but I was still gobsmacked. Either this was a trick or the plan was actually working! I’m not going to die yet! I trotted over to join the group, even though every fiber of my being was telling me to run away as fast as I could. My eyes wandered over to the nearest wall, wondering if I could manage to climb over it before I was noticed. I even managed to put on a smile as Fancy Pants kissed my hoof in greeting. “Miss Wallpole, I presume. Ah yes, you’re the spitting image of your father. How is he doing these days? I haven’t seen him since I last visited Fillydelphia.” Okay, okay, calm. How did she even speak again? Was it some kind of crude Trottingham accent? I guess Wallpole the ‘Jolly Sailor’ would have to do. “Oh, aye. I… can’t say I know how he’s doing, we haven’t… spoken in a while.” Fancy Pants even seemed happy with this. “Ah yes, I thought as much. A fine but stubborn stallion, always stuck in his ways. But I must ask, in your letter you said you were supposed to arrive three days ago. Why the delay?” “M-my apologies. Our ship was scuttled by a storm and I was badly injured.” Technically true. “Luckily I managed to get a lift here with a local merchant, I just arrived this morning.” “Goodness gracious; you must have sailed straight into a hurricane. What a frightful experience, but nothing a mare like yourself couldn’t handle I bet. You always had your father’s guts.” I gave a small chuckle. “I guess I’m just very lucky.” “Lucky for us as well. By the way, have you met Miss Spitfire and Master Soarin’ yet? Those two also have a keen eye for adventure, I’m sure you’d be thick as thieves, in a matter of speaking.” I shook my head slowly. “No, no I’ve never met them before. What… exactly do they do?” Fancy Pants looked a bit surprised. “Surely you know? Aside from their usual performances, the Wonderbolts are the elite members of our Order. We’ve had dealings with Spitfire’s family for centuries, longer if you believe the stories. Forgive me, but I assumed the Assassins already knew of our connections with the Wonderbolts.” Order? Assassins? Was Fancy Pants part of some kind of cult? Maybe they were like a secret organization working for Celestia on top secret missions to save Equestria, sorta like spies. I could imagine Fancy Pants as a spy. But I still had no idea what the Assassins were. They sounded… menacing, even intimidating. Did that mean Wallpole was an Assassin? “No, the… Assassins never told me about this. What sort of dealings do you usually have with them?” Fancy Pants raised an eyebrow, but proceeded to swat away the question with a charming smile. “Now that information is strictly limited to those within our Order. Until your induction I have a responsibility to make sure our secrets remain just that, after that I will answer any and all questions you may have.” Now he’s talking about inductions into this “Order” which I don’t even know anything about! What was Wallpole getting herself into? I needed more information. “Can you still tell me more about your Order? I’m… not really sure what to expect when I’m... inducted.” “Now that is a question I can answer.” He seemed glad with the change of topic. “As you’ve probably figured out, everypony here, including myself, are part of an exclusive group. Our aim is and has always been the preservation of pony kind through order, stability, and unity; to enlighten the world on the path to true to peace. The Assassins have only ever sought chaos and disorder, thwarting our plans and killing our members. Their deluded ideas of freedom have cost us dearly.” He spoke with such disgust that I never expected from the kind old stallion. “You have been a part of this struggle, you have seen the Assassins for what they really are; murderers who will stop at nothing until Equestria is in a state of anarchy. I speak for everypony here when I say we were overjoyed to receive your letter and learn that you had seen the truth of their actions. Every Assassin who decides to join us is more than welcome within our Order.” That’s what Wallpole was doing. She was an Assassin, like the one that tried to murder Twilight and… and killed Spike. It had to be them. Wallpole left the Assassins to join this Order, but I guess she was still a killer at heart. Once a killer always a killer. I wanted to ask more questions, I had so much I needed to know, but Fancy Pants silenced me with a hoof to my lip. “I think I’ve entertained you long enough. You can speak to me later after you’ve met with the Governor, one of the heads of our Order. Come with me and I will escort you inside the Villa.” I didn’t like the idea of joining a secret group of ponies fighting a war against a bunch of crazed killers, but if it meant finally getting answers, then I was willing to do anything. But in lighter news, the plan was working! Yay! “Governor Torrent?” Fancy Pants knocked his hoof against the entrance to the study. I managed to peer past him and got a better look inside, and it was an amazing sight - the whole room was a huge and vast library of books. Each and every piece was dusted, cleaned, and sorted into its appropriate location in such a way that even Twilight would be jealous. She would have really loved this place. In the center of the room stood a large oak desk overlooking the verandah. Maps, scrolls and tomes lay scattered across its surface like an organized mess. Sitting there with back faced to us sat a far older looking unicorn, his coat a dull sandy yellow and his mane and beard faded to grey. He wore a lovely blue coat beautifully decorated with pattern woven of gold and silver. “Ah, Señorita Wallpole. So glad you could finally join us.” He stood up from his workplace and removed his reading spectacles. “I must say, you look like you’ve been to Tartarus and back. Your appearance is something to behold, or is this sort of thing customary for you assassin types?” I looked up and down my own ragged attire. I mean, it wasn’t that bad, was it? It was a bit filthy but I’ve seen Applejack go to parties in outfits worse than this. I think that’s about when smell of sea salt and sweat hit my nose, my cheeks lighting up red with embarrassment. “I admit, your profile was a very interesting read. Your father, was a carpenter, no? Quick Fix, I think his name was. Raised in Trottingham before relocating to Fillydelphia some years ago.” How did they know so much about me- I mean Wallpole? Were they spies?! “You’ve been described as well mannered, elegant, but prone to acts of violence - An issue I’m sure we can work around in time. “But where are my manners? I am Gobernador Swift Torrent de Hoovana, Grand Chronicler and Historian.” I curtsied, although I wasn't really sure how I was expected to greet a member of the Templars. “It’s an honor to finally meet you, Sir. I- I have so many questions to ask you, I don’t even know where to begin.” He raised his hoof to silence me. “Forgive me, but there will be plenty of time for questions later. Right now I must know that you have delivered to us what was promised in your letter.” Promised? Oh, he must mean that glass cube I found in these saddle bags. Wallpole must have made some kind of deal in exchange for joining these ponies. I rummaged around my bags till I pulled out the small cube and presented it to the Governor, his eyes instantly lighting up upon seeing it. “Muy buena, but first I must examine its contents, just to be sure.” He levitated the cube from my grasp and set it down on his desk. “Are you familiar with this technology, Señorita Wallpole?” To be honest, I’d never really thought about the cube. What was so special about a glass cube? Was it like a puzzle of some kind, or a telescope? Maybe it was part of some kind of super weapon. I answered with a shake of the head, although he didn’t seem too surprised by this. “The Assassins have kept many secrets over the years; this little trinket happens one of them.” The cube was once again surrounded in the bright blue glow of Torrent’s magical grasp. “Allow me to show you how it works.” Suddenly the cube began to emit its own light, glowing brighter and brighter by the second. But then the light began to take shape, projecting images like some kind of hologram. I could even make out numbers and letters, maybe a list of some kind. Maybe the cube was designed to store information of some kind. “Brillante!” Torrent cheered, the hologram disappearing back into the cube as he rested it back on his desk. “I cannot express my gratitude enough, Señorita Wallpole, for the delivery of this cube. Its information is… invaluable, essential to our cause.” I gave a nervous smile, still not exactly too sure what I’d just seen. “H-happy to help, I guess.” Torrent levitated over a small chest decorated with gold and jewels, in which he locked the glass cube before placing it back under his desk. “Of course, I understand that you will have many questions, and in time I will answer them. For now I would ask you to rejoin the others until I summon you all.” Really...? More waiting? The plan was working well enough, nopony here recognized me as one of the Elements of Harmony, but I was no closer to finding my friends than when I first arrived. I guess I’d just try and talk to Fancy Pants later, maybe one of the other members. After all, one of them was bound to know something. A guard came bursting down the hallway, his armor clanking and rattling as he tumbled through the doorway. “Mi señor, the main courtyard is under attack!” Torrent looked shocked at the news, but nowhere near as shocked as I was. Forget being discovered or imprisoned, we were going to die! “A-attacked b-by who exactly?” The guard didn’t really seem to have a straight answer. “I don’t know. Warriors, all dressed in white robes just like ghosts. Before we even knew what was happening they ambushed us, killing most of the guard and closing in on the guests. I only just managed to escape without being spotted.” “Asesinos! I knew they would show up soon.” Governor Torrent said with disdain. “Gracias soldier, you may return to your post.” The stallion saluted and galloped back out into the hallway. “Wallpole, once again I must ask for help. My soldiers cannot fight off the Assassins alone; go to them and help the defense. We could certainly use your years of experience and training out there.” ... I think I peed a little...
Sequence: 1What was I doing?
“Alright, let's keep moving."
Sequence: 4What kind of a ship was this? “Then you’ll need to know how to survive in this world.”
Sequence: 5“Alright, remember how it goes.
