Chapter 1: Welcome to the Outpost!

“They told me I needed friends. I didn’t doubt them for a second.”

Whirlwind

I woke up to the Outpost’s sirens roaring in my ears. I moaned and I looked over to my Pipbuck’s watch. Three AM. Damn, why couldn’t it of been at least four AM?

“Wake up you asshole!” My friend, T-55 yelled to me. Goddesses-Damn this Prototype Power Armor! It is very helpful, and so annoying other times. I often wonder why I bother to keep the old thing.

“Alright, alright, I'm getting up,” I said, slowly sliding out of my warm, comfortable bed. As soon as I stood up, I regretted it, and fell back onto my bed, tired and a bit dizzy.  I immediately regretted laying back down, for my suit  got up and stabbed me with a rather large syringe built into itself. “Ok, fuck you, fine. I’m up for real this time., I allowed myself to relax as I climbed into the Power Armor. “ What is it this time?”

“I have yet to receive reports on who or what.” T-55 replied.

I looked around my Stable room. Empty as always. I should hang a picture or a painting somewhere. Even though we had the stable cleaned of the cobwebs, it still looks eerie and vacant. I envisioned a colorful picture of a few happy, dancing ponies, all dressed up and with their loved ones at the Gala ,which I heard about through a post card, hanging on my wall. Even the smallest bit of color would add some small happiness. I realized that I was standing idle for too long, and telepathically levitated my Solar Powered Rifle to my side. I flipped the switch to turn it on, and the lights on the side of the gun slowly grew brighter with energy was it absorbed the artificial light from the small glowing mini-sun hovering just above my head. I floated the Solar Powered Pistol into it’s designated destination, it’s old, rotten holster on my left. “Take a guess then.”

“From what I have seen lately, it could be giant bottle of Sunrise Sarsaparilla.”

“Very funny. Now for real.”

“Mutants. Just got the report. Not many, but  not many.”

“Not very surprising.” I slipped my black, sun resistant ski goggles on.  It’s sunrise at three AM in Northern Equestria, and the sunlight reflecting off the snow requires either sunglasses or ski goggles. The helmet that came with the Armor has built in sun resistant lenses, but the helmet was never comfortable, so I never wear it. It just sits on my bookshelf, collecting dust and Frost Spiders.

“Sir, we need to hurry, new reports suggest that they are using larger weapons and are receiving reinforcement.”

“Ok, I am almost ready.” I placed my brown cowpony onto my head. “Ready.”

I clicked the button to my door, opening it. I started to run over to the Outpost’s entrance, but was slowed down because the civilians were running in the opposite direction to the safe room. They yelled and hollered as they shoved their way past me. The more steps I took, the louder the sound of gunfire got. As I approached the door of the Outpost, which is a large Stable door, I saw my companions already outside the door, shooting at the enemy with their firearms, which are not like my Solar Powered guns. Those guns require ammo. Sadly for the Outpost, we are running low on our supply of ammunition. I saw my friend Biohazard , our demolition expert, fighting along side our medical unicorn, Lightning Flicker, but I couldn’t see the squad’s sniper, Lucky, or as we call her, Lil’ One-Shot. Biohazard and Lightning were in the Outpost’s lighter uniform, basic winterized combat uniform.

I found myself distracted by Lightning Flicker’s rear. “Focus you dumbass,” I thought to myself. I stepped forward and entered the fray.

I got the first greeting today from Lightning Flicker, “Morning Whirlwind!”

“Uh, yea, you too,” I said, trying hard not to remember what I was looking at a few seconds ago, “Morning. Where is Lil’ One Shot?”

“She is on top of the Outpost sniping. She gets a better view from up there.” Biohazard answered.

“Mind lending us a hoof?” Lightning Flicker said

“Sure.” I surveyed the scene before me.

We were the squad closes to the Outpost, just outside the door, while the other squads were farther out, in small shacks made by ponies after the fallout. The ponies built the houses to survive the cold while they waited for the Stable’s doors to open. It never did.  It never opened for anybody. Until we broke in and made our base. The passcode was “CMC4”

I wonder what “CMC” stands for.

The squads were only four ponies each. I tried hard to see them through the blazing white of the sun reflecting from the snow. The ones that I managed to see looked tiny compared to the mutants. The mutants were easily twice the size of a fully grown stallion, and some may have been three times the size of a pony. I counted nine before more snow started falling and the world darkened as a storm cloud passed overhead.

I aimed my Solar Powered Rifle at the closest Mutant and pulled the trigger. I could see the bright yellow laser race forward and hit it’s target. One down, eight to go.

I was aiming for another mutant when a beautiful, young, light blue mare with a dark black mane fell from above me and landed on me.  I lost my shot, but almost managed to hit Lightning Flicker’s ear as I fell. “Damn, One-Shot. You always do this, but please don’t do it when we are in the heat of battle.” I said in a rather hateful tone towards One-Shot. We called her One-Shot because she was the best aim in the entire Outpost. On her first strike she would always hit her target, preferably in the head. Her real name was Lucky One. If we really wanted to, we would say “Lucky One-Shot”. I always liked her Cutie Mark, which I found myself staring at, which was a simple clover. She smiled at me. She wore a white coat and a dark grey shirt. Some of her clothes were stained with light blotches of blood. She had her thermal vision goggles on, which made her look bug-eyed.

“It’s cold to me, my Pipbuck here says it’s negative 22 degrees. No wait, negative 23. 24.” She said while looking down at her Pipbuck. “By the way, what are you staring at?” She slid her thermal goggles onto her forehead, looked at me, and winked at me.

“Erm, your, uh” I searched for an excuse, and luckily, I found one, “Your ammo clip which you just dropped. You probably need that, heh.”

“Oh, yes! I do! Thank you!.” she looked around herself to find it, and placed it back into her jacket’s pocket. “I have decided to throw empty ammo clips at them, just to freak them out, like ‘oh shit she just threw a grenade’ or something, so they get distracted and I can shoot them while they hide from a ‘grenade’”.

“I don’t care as long as you kill the damned things.” She had to do this now.

“Smart though, right?” She slipped the goggles back onto her eyes.

“Why should we fucking care?” Biohazard cut in.

“Well, you should care bec-” One-Shot began, but was cut off from a missile soaring in between her face and my own, sailing freely into the open Vault door., and down the hallway.

Biohazard was pissed, “Who left the fucking door open?”

Shit. It was me... I was out last. Rule number one, shut the damned door behind you. I started to raise a hoof when I saw a missile flying towards me. I ducked down, and let the thing through the Stable’s door. It flew down the hall until an explosion was heard. Great, now there is something broken somewhere in the Outpost. As punishment, I got a slap on the face by Biohazard, a spanking from One-Shot, and an evil glare from Lightning Flicker. I hated it when Lightning was mad with me. I got up and closed the Vault door, preventing any further damage to the inside of the Outpost. One-Shot spanked me again, for fun this time. I resisted a blush, but only because she was hitting my Power Armor’s ass, not mine.

“Oh, yes please, more.” T-55 said, trying to embarrass me. One-Shot hit me again and giggled.

“Can you stop hitting my ass and kick the enemies asses?” I yelled. Some pony in the other squads was crying out in pain.

“I don’t want to touch a mutant’s ass. It’s all spiky because of the crystals covering it!” Fuck you One-Shot.

“I don’t care, just shoot them!” I was now screaming at her. She now looked scared of me, knowing that this was not the time for jokes. She looked a little cute.

“Fuck all of you, pay attention, and don’t give two shits about what the other squad mates have to say, ya hear me you two?” Biohazard yelled at us. As soon as he finished the sentence He was shot in the arm, and then the head.

“Get the fuck down!” I yelled, before my friend’s body even hit the floor.

Shit just got real.
