My hands were on the wood desk in front of me. Piles of paper and a coffee cup sat upon it as well as a photo of my daughter and deceased wife. I miss you, sweetie. I'll stop the crime. The thought and picture always made me fell warm inside. My wife's death was the reason I became a cop in the first place. I reached down and took a sip of the warm liquid, still steaming a bit. The glass door of my gray-tiled office swung open and a man walked in bearing a name tag and police officer uniform. His walkie talkie was buzzing with noise of the dispatcher. He had a chubby face colored light blue with long yellow hair flowing out of the hat atop his head. The officer also bore a mustache. “Captain Shellcase,” The man spoke in a deep tone looking directly into my eyes, “This letter was just dropped off for you. The carrier said it was too important to just toss into your mailbox and by the looks of the logo on the front he may be right.” He handed me a white envelope. I took it and nodded placing my coffee cup onto my desk. “I see. Thank you, Officer...” I stopped and glanced at his nametag. “Stargaze, sir.” The officer finished my sentence before I could open my mouth. “I’m new here.” “Right, Officer Stargaze. I’m sorry. I didn’t recognize you. We haven’t gotten a new officer in quite some time here at Canterlot P.D.” I smiled trying to ease his nerves. “Oh, it’s quite alright. With your record, I’m surprised you’d need any new officers at all.” Stargaze laughed at that. “It’s nothing special. I’m just doing what needs to be done in this rundown city.” I slouched back in my chair. “This city used to be something special now look at it. Crime rates are sky-high and there’s barely anything anyone can do about it.” Shaking my head, I let out a sigh. “Did you see what happened on the news, sir? I thought you might like to hear about it.” “No, I stopped watching the news a long time ago. Shoot, rookie. Remember no one likes an ass kisser.” Laughing, I shot him a smile. He returned the smile before clearing his throat.      “Well, something crazy went down at Canterlot High two nights ago. They’re giving the media a bunch of crap about bad construction.” I cocked an eyebrow. “Canterlot High? What happened exactly?” I had to admit this peaked my interest a bit. “Well, during the dance they were holding the entire front of the school collapsed.” “Collapsed? Just like that?” “That’s what the principal is feeding the media. Bad construction. There’s all kinds of rumors floating around. Then, there’s that huge crater near the school as well. No comments on that yet.” “Huh. Weird, but unfortunately not police business. Now, if you’ll please excuse me. I’ve had a long day, Stargaze.” I put my hand up to the bridge of my nose as a throbbing pain seared through my head. Stargaze nodded and quickly left the room. Outside the window, it was raining. I stared out, now sitting half-turned in my chair. I turned the letter over and gasped. The front of the letter read: ImageCorp. I nearly dropped it out of my hand. ImageCorp? What would a company that specializes in cameras and mirrors want with a cop? I opened the envelope and took out a folded sheet of paper. Unfolding it, my eyes darted to the first words. Dear Captain Shellcase, Imagecorp is in dire need of your services. The incident surrounding Canterlot High has brought something to our attention. There is a girl attending that has stolen something from us. We would have come to you directly but this situation needs to be resolved. There is a picture of the girl included in the envelope. Please recover our property and you shall be paid handsomely. Sincerely, ImageCorp My eyes went wide after reading the letter. Canterlot High? The incident? Maybe I spoke too soon. My hand dug into the envelope pulling out a picture. I looked at it and gasped once more this time dropping the photo. Sunset Shimmer? How is that troublemaker tied into all this? ______________________________ The windshield wipers went back and forth furiously, clearing the rain as it appeared again. It was pouring outside while the clouds above were dark gray and gloomy. A thunderous boom sounded after a streak of blue lightning shot out in the distance. My siren wailed as the tires sprayed water onto the side of the road. I was still shocked at the letter I had received. What has that conniving little brat done now? What kind of trouble has she got me wrapped up in? My eyes were wide as one hand gripped the wooden wheel so hard that my knuckles turned white. I was coming close to Canterlot High going about ten miles over the speed limit. My leg shook nervously while the other rested on the gas pedal gently. I’ve been dealing with this girl since she first moved to this town. Always in fights, always harassing her fellow students, always thinking she’s above the law. I flicked my turn signal on and turned right into the school’s parking lot. Quickly, I drove up to the front of the building breaking near the doors. As I put the car in park and turned the key, the sound of the engine ceased. Opening the door, I got out of the car slamming the door shut. I lifted the brown hood of my coat over my head while rain splashed down upon me. The front of the school was half-done with construction. To my left, a few feet in front of the car was a large crater filled with muddy, murky water. What happened here? Quickly, I darted to the front entrance. I swung the finished doors opened and headed inside. The inside was lined with green lockers on each side. I made my way to the Principle’s wooden door. The door’s golden sign read: Principal Celestia. It quickly opened revealing the principal. Her long flowing multi-colored hair partially hung over her eye. She brushed it back. “Hello, Captain Shellcase. What can I do for you?” She said in a sweet voice. “Hello, Principal Celestia… You know, it’s never fun having the cops show up yet you’re always so polite.” I smiled at her and she returned it, ushering me inside. “Please, have a seat.” Celestia offered as she walked behind her wooden desk and sat down. “I’m afraid you know why I’m here; who I want to see.” I sat down and folded my hands together, interlocking fingers. The principle let out a sigh. “Sunset Shimmer? I assure you she’s actually been behaving the past few days.” I couldn't help but laugh. “Excuse me, I’m sorry. That was rude but Shimmer never learns her lesson. We both know that, Celestia. I need to speak to her. it’s urgent.” She nodded pressing a button down on the PA system’s microphone. Celestia cleared her throat. “Students may I have your attention. Will Sunset Shimmer please report to the Principal’s office. That is all.” She released the button and turned her gaze at me. “I’ll leave you in here, Bullet. I have some business to attend to and I know you like your privacy.” She got up out of her chair. “ I appreciate it. Thank you.” “Of course.” With that, she left the room closing the door gently behind her. I waited, my leg shaking. Damn nerves. This anxiety will be the death of me. I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a pill bottle. Opening the top, I popped a pill into my mouth, swallowed, and then placed the bottle back in my pocket. The door opened and Sunset walked in bearing the same leather jacket, skirt, and red and yellow colored hair she always did. Her eyes met mine, but something was different this time. She looked surprised to see me and a little frightened as well. “Off-Captain Shellcase? What can I do for you?” Shimmer asked sounding polite for the first time. My jaw nearly dropped while she held a warm smile upon her face. “Take a seat, Shimmer. I need to speak to you about something important.” I  told her pointing to a seat adjacent mine. She only nodded, smiled, and sat down. “Now, it has come to my attention that you have stolen something. Something important.” Her eyes went wide and her jaw now agape. Sunset seemed to be cowering in fear. “W-What? I-I didn’t steal anything!” She rose her voice slamming her fist on the armrest in clear outrage. “Calm down, Shimmer. I know you stole something. I received a letter confirming it from somebody very important. Now, don’t bullshit me!” I rose my voice a bit giving her a demanding look. She slouched back and folded her arms. “I gave it back. You can ask the principal.” I began laughing. “If you returned the item, then why did ImageCorp send me this letter?” Reaching into my right pocket, I pulled the letter out and handed it to her. Sunset began reading the letter. She handed it back to me when she finished. “ImageCorp? How would I steal something from that place? Last time I went on a field trip there it was heavily guarded. You’re a cop. You should know a high school girl couldn’t get in there.” She’s got a point. I guess with all this stress I forgot to stop and think about it. “Shimmer, I know you. You’ve been in my office twice as often than the Principal’s. For years, I’ve been dealing with your stunts. Maybe, the place is a bit hard to access but they wouldn’t send me this if it wasn’t true.” I leaned in looking angrily in her eyes. “Now, tell me the truth!” “I am!” Sunset snapped back gritting her teeth. “I didn’t steal from ImageCorp. I stole from another student but like I said, I gave it back to her!” That attitude. “Can I speak with this other student?” “No, she transferred a few days ago.” “A few days ago. Why do I keep hearing those words. What did happen a few days ago?” “Don’t you watch the news? Bad construction. The front of the school collapsed.” “And what of the crater in front of the school?” Sunset was silent for a few moments. “How should I know?!” I was getting a bit agitated. “Sunset, just give me the item and I promise to leave you alone. You're lucky they aren’t pressing charges.” “I don’t have it! Aren’t you listening?” From her tone, I could tell she was agitated as well. “Then, what do I tell ImageCorp?” I cocked an eyebrow. “Like there gonna believe you.” “Tell them to take a hike for all I care! What are they gonna do? Take pictures of me?” She said sarcastically rolling her eyes. Then, it hit me. They are taking pictures of her! That means someone from ImageCorp or someone hired by them is surveying her. Something isn’t right. Why would a company like ImageCorp need to stalk a high school student? What could be so important? Sunset groaned. “Can I go now?” “No, you may not. Have you noticed anything strange? Like someone following you?” Now, her eyebrow was raised. “No, why?” I took the picture out of my pocket. “Because ImageCorp sent this along with the letter.” Shimmer took it and gasped. “How the hell did they get a picture of me in school?!” “My guess is they hired someone to follow you around. Now, why would they do that?” “I-I don’t know.” Her hand was trembling and she looked genuinely terrified. Suddenly, a loud boom and crumbling debris made our heads turn. What was that? It sounded like it came from the front of the school. I began to get up and so did Sunset. “Stay here. This was a trap!” I ordered as I began walking to the door. Sunset grabbed my hand pulling me back. I turned my head to her. “What?” “No! I’m coming with you! My friends are in the gymnasium! I need to help them! Please!” Shimmer begged and gave me a look I hadn’t seen from her before. Caring, compassion for others. The door burst open flying off it’s hinges. A large muscular man walked in dressed in a suit and tie. He was charcoal black and his eyes a green, bug-like shape. He held an assault rifle in his hands and had it aimed at us. “Drop your weapon and turn over the girl!” The man boomed. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Two: The Assault //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Two: The Assault Canterlot City Chronicles: Invasion of the Changelings Chapter Two: The Assault Written by: Fluttashift I had my left hand firmly placed upon the weapon holstered in my belt while the other trembled. Sunset stood behind me; her eyes wide with fear. Her hands were trembling as well. “Did you not hear me fool? Drop the damn weapon and give me the girl!” The man yelled, spit flying from his mouth as he pointed the gun at my head. “W-what do you want with me?” Sunset asked innocently an earnest tone in her voice. Who is this guy? Why are his eyes so different? He looks almost alien. “Oh, drop the act! Sunset Shimmer playing the good, little human? Never thought I’d see the day!” A wicked grin spread across the man’s face. She remained silent. I turned my head with a cocked eyebrow. “What is this guy talking about? Do you know him?” Shimmer shook her head too scared to speak. I could see the fear in her eyes. What the hell is going on? What does this have to do with the letter and ImageCorp? Slowly, I unbuttoned the holster and pulled the cold, silver pistol out. Dropping it to the floor, I kicked it over to him. My hands were in the air acting as a signal of surrender. “What do you want with the girl?” I shot him a glare daring him to answer me. “The girl has sensitive information, Captain…” He paused for a minute as if for dramatic effect as he held the devilish grin. “How the hell do you know that?!” I interrupted, pointing an accusing finger in his direction as my face grew red with anger. “Didn’t you get the letter?” The man questioned his tone changing to a calm one. “From ImageCorp? Did they send you?” My expression changed to one of shock. He fell silent and then broke into a hearty laugh. “Is that what they told you?” His laughter continued. He’s toying with me, stalling even. Seriously, who is this guy, and how does ImageCorp fit into this? Something isn’t right… My gut was usually correct, but for once in years I prayed it wasn’t right. I kept my hands in the air. “And what sensitive information does she have?” I shrugged placing my hands to my sides. “The information she possesses is that she knows far too much about something you couldn’t even begin to fathom. Humans couldn’t understand. Too ignorant to what’s hiding in plain site. U.f.Os, monsters, other worlds, other dimensions.” He explained to me sounding annoyed, and shaking his head. “What do you mean ‘humans’? What else would we be?” Oh shit.     “You’re not human are you?”. “Does it matter? You’re dead either way. You served your useless purpose, Captain. Now, you can join your wife as soon as you hand over the whore.” He motioned his finger in a forward motion. Demanding that I give him Sunset. “What the hell did you just say!” How does he know so much about me? Is this creep really trying to convince me he’s some kind of alien. Yet, his eyes. So... bug-like. “Go screw yourself!” Sunset yelled out stomping her foot on the ground and balling up her fists. “I’m not going anywhere, got that!” She gritted her teeth with a look that read I mean business. There’s the Sunset I know. Figured, she couldn’t keep up the act. Never could all the years I’ve been dealing with her. I shook my head. “Quiet Shimmer!” I ordered her. “Now, Sunset be a good little girl and tell me where in the school the portal is. We’ve traced it to this location! Don’t you dare lie to me!” The man interjected using the gun to further prove his point. “The portal? I have no idea what you're referring to.” Sunset folded her arms turning her head away, speaking in a matter-of-fact tone. She’s always been a terrible liar, but what portal, and to where? What is going on here? “Did I stutter, Shimmer? Don’t lie to me!” The man was getting angry. His voice was raised to a high volume as he shook the gun. More spit escaped his jaws. “Even if I knew, why would I tell you? Either way I’m dead.” She said as if challenging him. “Always so smart!” The man began walking up to us. He seemed to grow taller and more muscular as he came forward. The barrel of the rifle was now pressed against Sunset’s forehead. “Listen, you unicorn scum. Tell me where the damn portal is and maybe I won’t kill your pretty little friends all bound and gagged in the gym.” Another wicked grin made it’s way across his face. Did he just say unicorn? Sunset grew angry. “Don’t you put your filthy hands on them!” She spit in his face after screaming at the top of her lungs. “Wrong answer.” He replied. Before he could pull the trigger, I swiftly swung at him. My fist impacted his ribs causing the breath to leave his lungs. He stumbled backwards dropping his weapon onto the floor. I quickly picked it up and pointed it at him. Recovering, he raised his hands, and backed up. Almost tripping over the Principal’s desk. “What the hell are you talking about. What portal? What unicorn? Do you expect me to believe this shit!?” I screamed at him demanding some answers. “No. I already said you couldn’t understand. You’re just too ignorant, so simple minded. ‘How could things like that exist’. You’re trying to piece it all together, but the puzzle shouldn’t exist and yet it stares you in the face. Still, you deny it.”. The man shook his head letting out a sigh. “Really, jerkoff? How about you enlighten me then? What are you, part of some freaky cult or something? Stop talking in riddles and make some sense!” I spoke to him in the most demanding and authoritative voice I could muster. “I can’t explain what you cannot comprehend. I would have an easier time describing colors to a blind man. Why do you even defend her? After all the trouble she’s caused. After what she did to the school, to the students! She’s a plague in any world she’s in.” “What she did to the school? She’s a little brat and a troublemaker. You expect me to believe a high school girl demolished the entire front of the school?” I began to laugh at the thought. “I hope you don’t actually believe she’s a high school girl. How foolish. You could say her and I are one in the same. Isn’t that right, Shimmer?” His head turned to Sunset. “We are nothing alike! You monster!” She rebuked looking disgusted. “You think you’re any less of a monster than me? Trying to use the Elements to take over Equestria. That’s not much better than our assault during the wedding.” The man teased her. “Equi‒what? Like as in horses? What the hell are you rambling on about, you nutcase?” I interjected with a shake of my weapon. “Shoot me! Go ahead Bullet! You need me alive. How else would you extract the information? Not that I would be foolish enough to talk. I’m Brute, the loyal right-hoof warrior of the Queen herself!” The man finally had a name to put to his face. “Right hoof? Queen? What kind of shit are you on?” The more he explained, the more confused I became. That confusion soon turned into irritation, and I began to feel my blood boil. He had a point. I couldn’t kill him. I needed answers. I desperately needed those. “Tell me where the portal is!” Brute shouted at Shimmer charging forward. Sunset froze her eyes widened in fear. The hulking man rushing toward her. “Shimmer! Run!” I screamed trying to put some sense into her clouded mind. The warning fell upon deaf ears. Turning the gun, I pulled the trigger. The gun began to jerk upwards as I blindly fired. My mind only thinking to aid her before she is killed. Bullets flew around the room, putting holes into the office wall’s, but every shot missed and each bullet traveled farther above the other.  Sunset ran around me heading for the non-existent door now an extension of the hallway. Brute swiftly turned knocking me to the floor with a powerful push. The rifle flew out of my hands and into the air. The sound of bullets ceased as the gun fell to the floor. I hit the ground hard on my right side. Pain shot through me, but I was stronger than that. I shook it off and got to my feet dusting myself off. Both of them were no longer within the room. I heard two sets of feet moving in the hallway. Quickly, I picked up the rifle and my pistol and ran after them. I could see a blur of black at the end of the stretching hallway turning right. Without hesitation, I gave chase hoping to catch up. I can’t let him kill her, or get whatever information he needs. Whoever, *whatever** this Brute is. He means business.* I stopped and grabbed my walkie pressing a button on it’s side. “This is Captain Shellcase, I need backup at Canterlot High, I repeat backup at Canterlot High.”. Releasing the button, I prayed for a reply. No reply came. Frantically, I repeated the request once more. Still, no answer came. “Dispatch, do you read me?” I began to feel nervous, then I realized there was no static. Come to think about it, the thing hasn’t made any racket since the man appeared. I checked to see if the thing was turned on and it was. I tossed it in a fit and ran turning right only to find the two had made their way to another location. Where did they go? My head darted behind me to the stretching hallway leading to a set of glass doors. A red, glowing exit sign hung above the doors. However it wasn’t the sign that caught my eye it was the movement outside. I could only make out a group of people making their way toward the doorway. I turned and ran forward at a quickening pace. Deciding being out in the open wasn’t a good idea, I broke for the nearest classroom. To the left was a door leading to one. I turned the knob and luckily it wasn’t locked. Upon entering, I slammed the door behind me. To my surprise, there was no one in the classroom. Where is everyone? School doesn’t let out for another hour. I heard a massive explosion confirming the group of mysterious figures had entered the school. Shuffling footsteps could be heard as the group made their way further down the hallway. I ran to the closet in the back of the classroom. Opening the metal door, I hid inside. It was a small room cramped with boxes of equipment like beakers, test tubes, magnifying glasses, and other objects. The door of the classroom burst open and the sound of four sets of feet could be heard entering the room. “Rip the room apart. Find clues to the portals whereabouts, and if it breathes, kill it.” I heard a raspy voice command the others. Slow steps could now be heard as I slowly and quietly pointed the rifle forward. Soon, the closet door swung open and my finger pulled back on the trigger. Two bullets shot through the intruder’s skull. The charcoal skinned man dropped to the floor in a meaty thud.          One man in front of me standing between a line of desks turned quickly and pulled back on the trigger of his rifle. Bullets shot through the air as I ran to my right after exiting the closet. I shot at the assailants legs impacting both his kneecaps causing him to fall to the floor. He screamed, writhing in pain as his weapon dropped onto the floor. The two others turned, and shot at me as I leaped to the floor. Sliding a bit, I managed to toss my weapon and whip my pistol out. Rolling onto my back, I aimed down the sights and shot one hostile in the chest. He jerked to his right on impact and fell onto his back. I killed the final intruder with a shot to the head. One last bullet shot from the final henchman's weapon. It grazed my leg causing a small cut in my pants and skin. A bit of blood trickled from the wound It stung a little but it wasn’t anything compared to what I’m used to. I got to my feet and dropped the magazine of my pistol to the ground causing a clack sound. Reaching into a pouch on my belt, I pulled out a magazine, jammed it into the gun, and cocked it back.           The wall directly in front of me exploded forward in a rush off dust and debris. The impact of the blast sent the steel teacher’s desk hurtling forward. It smashed into the back wall of the room. Eight henchmen made their way forward after the dust cleared. They all clutched the same assault rifles and had the same bug-like eyes. I darted to the large bookshelf near the wall and hid behind it. “We know you’re in here, Captain! You’re dead!” A thug yelled out trying to scare me out of my hiding spot. How am I gonna make it out of this one? There’s about eight of them, heavily armed, and it won’t be long before they spot me. What should I do? “Hey, pricks!” I heard a familiar voice. Wait...Sunsets here? She must of heard the gunshots, but where’s Brute? The sound of rapid-firing bullets cracked through the air. I heard the henchmen drop, and, slowly, I walked out of my hiding spot. My hands were raised to show I was friendly. “Captain Shellcase, thank Celestia I found you!” Sunset exclaimed, dropping her weapon, and running up to me. “Thank who?” I asked incredulously, raising an eyebrow. “What was Brute talking about?” “I-it doesn’t matter right now!” Shimmer stuttered trying to change the subject. “Yes it does!” I screamed at her. “You know things, Sunset. Things that don’t even make sense!” I pointed an accusing finger in her face. “My friends could be killed!” She rebuked stomping her foot on the floor. “You don’t have friends! The students are terrified of you! You harass them to get what you want! I’m not risking my ass for those two lackeys of yours!” My finger remained in her face. “Now, tell me what you know!” She smacked my finger out of her face. “That isn’t who I am anymore! I’m not referring to Snips and Snails! They stopped talking to me a few days ago anyway!” “There goes that phrase again. What did happen a few days ago?” My blood was boiling. She keeps changing the subject! What is she hiding? “I can’t explain now! After we save my friends, I promise I’ll tell you everything I know.” Her tone turned to a soft one as she placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “No matter how crazy it sounds.” She took me by surprise with her gesture. It was one of assurance as the look in her eyes were sincere. “Alright.” I let out a sigh. “We’ll save your friends, but I expect you to hold up your end of the bargain, or you’ll be spending a night in jail.” Sunset smiled and nodded as she led me into the hallway. “Where is Brute?” I asked out of curiosity. “I lost him. I think he may be heading for the gym. That’s where he figures I’d go.” She replied without turning her head. “Lead the way to the gym, Shimmer. Just be on the lookout for those thugs. I doubt those couple we killed were the only ones.” Sunset responded only with a nod as we rounded the corner. The trek to the gym was surprisingly quiet as we walked down different hallways all housing the same line of green lockers on each side. We made a few turns before we came to a set of large red doors that led into the gymnasium. I peeked in through a small rectangular glass window one located in the same spot on each door. Inside, I could see all the students bound and gagged, kneeling on the floor of the gym. There was at least ten or so henchmen patrolling around the gym, all in various different areas. Some were walking around the large circle of captured students and faculty making sure none of them tried anything. Three thugs stood upon the stage at the far end of the room. Two were walking back and forth while one stood in the middle. On the stage, there were seven chairs with five students tied up. sitting in them with gags in their mouths. They were all female and my jaw dropped as I realized those must be Sunset’s friends. It was as if they were on display. In the other two seats sat the Principal as well as the Vice-Principal. “I found your friends. You’re not gonna like this.” I warned her but she pushed me aside and peeked in. “Those bastards! We need to save them!” She whispered sounding scared. “I’m working on it!” I snapped at her. “Are you now?” A booming voice came from behind us. Oh shit! “Time to join your friends, Sunset.” Brute teased as a gun was pressed against both are backs. We were escorted into the room by Brute and a few henchman led to the circle of bound students and faculty. The gun in our backs told us to keep moving and we were forced up a small set of steps. Soon, we were on the stage standing behind the row of chairs. “Sunset, what’s going on?” A rainbow haired, cyan skinned girl in shorts and a t-shirt asked. “Whatever do these barbarians want with us?” A purple haired and snowy white skinned girl spoke up in an accent I hadn’t heard before, it sounded very fancy though. She wore a white top with a purple skirt. “Quiet!” Brute hollered, slapping the girls. “Don't you touch them!” Sunset screamed, gritting her teeth. Brute broke into a hearty laugh. “Did you forget that we hold all the cards girl? Tell us where the portal is!” He demanded, slapping her. There was a red mark across her face where he slapped her. “The statue! The statue in front of the school! That’s the portal! Now, let my friends go!” She said through tears. “Thank you for your cooperation, Sunset.” He ruffled her hair with a grin on his face. Brute turned to the thug on his right. “Get the chopper ready and load the statue.” The henchman nodded and took a couple thugs with him, speaking in some strange language. Brute turned to Sunset. “Now for your prize!” He said in a teasingly excited tone. Brute walked over to the rainbow haired girl and aimed the rifle at her head. “You’ll be the first.” “Stop!” I yelled at him. “They’re just kids!” “And I care why? You pathetic creatures deserve the fate you inflict upon your own race. War, pollution, disease. Imagine a world without you. A perfect utopia.” Brute seemed to be delving into something much more than the subject of murdering some innocent high school students. What is he talking about? A utopia? What he’s doing now makes him no better than what he claims we are! “I don’t care about your views on human history. I care about the safety of these students! Stop talking in circles!” My voice was demanding and my look stern. Without thinking, I headbutted the guard to my right, grabbing his weapon as he fell. I pointed it at Brute’s head. “Drop your weapons or I blow your boss’s brains out!” I commanded. The thugs did as they were told. Even Brute dropped his gun. Brute began to laugh and his lackeys followed along. “Whats so funny? The gun is pointed at your head.” I pressed it harder against the back of his head to further prove my point. “That may be so, Bullet, but here’s the thing.” He paused as he pulled out a small black detonator with a single, large, red button in the middle. “I’ll blow this school to kingdom come if you don’t escort us to the exit. We got what we came for.” “Fine.” I simply replied as I led the group of intruders to the front of the school. Reaching the entrance, a black helicopter could be seen and a large hole was now visible where the statue once was. The group climbed into the chopper as rain pelted down from the sky. I became drenched, my hair wet and flat; my uniform stuck to my skin. Brute climbed in last but not before turning to face me. “Guess what, Captain.” Brute pressed the button. I covered my ears waiting for a massive explosion to engulf the school, but nothing happened. The chopper’s propellers began to spin faster and faster as the vehicle lifted off the ground. I pointed the gun up and shot at the chopper. It was no use of course. The shots missed not one impacting the helicopter as it got farther and farther away. It disappeared into the gray clouds and the whirring engine began to sound more distant. I threw the gun into the crater near my car and ran back into the school. I darted for the gym. Upon entering, I found the students and staff untied and unharmed. “Sunset! We need to talk, now!” //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Three: Fact or Fiction //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Three: Fact or Fiction Canterlot City Chronicles: Invasion of the Changelings Chapter Three: Fact or Fiction Written by: Fluttashift I sat in a metal chair while Sunset stood in front of me, the green chalkboard directly behind her. She stood there with her arms folded tapping her foot on the ground. An awkward silence permeated the air as we both stood there. Sunset’s friends were sitting next to each other in the front row of desks behind me. I had learned their names and was formally introduced. Normally, I wouldn’t allow this, but Shimmer insisted and I desperately seeked answers. “Well?” I broke the silence causing Sunset to turn her head and look directly into my eyes. She let out a sigh. “Brute was right. I’m not from this world,” Sunset said in a calm tone. I stayed seated trying not to laugh. “What? Are you kidding me? Do you really expect me to believe something like that?” “I knew you wouldn’t believe me! Nopony ever does,” She stomped her foot balling up her fist in anger. “No pony?” I tilted my head in confusion. Ponies? Other worlds? What the hell did I get myself into? Putting my hand up to my forehead, I sighed. “Sunset, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Tell me what you know.” “Well, I’m from a place called Equestria. It’s a land filled with sentient ponies that act as the humans of that world. Anyway, I was Princess Celestia’s prized pupil for a while, but I was self-centered and power-hungry. I escaped into a mirror that led here. Slowly, I became the Sunset Shimmer you have dealt with for so long.” She paused, a look of sadness in her eyes. **Princess* Celestia?* “Please, go on,” I said in a soft tone feigning a smile. “Well, a few days ago, Twilight Sparkle came here seeking the crown I had stolen. I stole it to use it’s power to take over Equestria. At the dance, she defeated me, and after seeing what I had done; what I had become. I decided right then and there that I would change myself for the better. Then, I befriended these five girls, and believe me, even after only a few days, I had become a better person than I once was.” Sunset finished puffing her chest out looking proud. I was rubbing my forehead while listening to her. Looking up, I cocked an eyebrow. “Even if all that was true it still doesn’t answer all my questions.” “It is true!” Sunset raised her voice staring at me angrily. “These five can confirm it! They witnessed the entire thing, They helped Twilight defeat me!” I turned to face the five girls. Rainbow Dash was slouching in her chair fiddling with her phone, while Pinkie Pie was bouncing up and down in mysterious excitement. Applejack was simply looking forward and soon her gaze fell upon me, Fluttershy was looking down at her desk while her backpack rustled around. Lastly, Rarity was sitting as proper as can be with her hands folded one on top of the other. “You girls can verify this information?” “Yes, darling, Sunset is telling the truth.” Rarity spoke up first, nodding her head. “Ah know it sounds a mite hard ta believe but Ah ain’t no liar and Sunset is tellin’ the truth.” Applejack was next to give me a confident smile. Rainbow and Fluttershy simply nodded while Pinkie was pre-occupied blowing air into a balloon. Dash kicked Pinkie under her chair and gestured her hand toward me telling Pinkie to speak. The balloon flew around the room making a whooshing sound as the air blew outward. “Hi!” Pinkie said with a wave and a bright grin. “Miss Pie, you can verify that what Sunset said is true, right?” I asked again as she clearly wasn’t paying attention. “Yup, of course! Sunset used to be a big, meanie liar, but she’s a good person now! Like super duper duper good! She even gave me her pudding cup at lunch yesterday!” She practically yelled excitedly. Turning back to Sunset, I remained silent. The more I thought about it the more questions I had. “So, what was Brute, A pony like you? I heard him call you a unicorn. Are there different types of ponies? Was he a different race?” “Brute is something called a Changeling. While I don’t know much about their race, I do know that they can shape-shift. There are three types of ponies. Unicorns, Pegasi, and Earth ponies; and yes, I am a unicorn.” Sunset looked at me with honest eyes. I could tell when she was lying. The thing that was causing my heart to beat fast was the fact that she wasn’t. “Then, that leaves only one question. What does he want?” I leaned in looking deep into Sunset’s teal eyes. “I-I don’t know. I can’t imagine why they’d want the portal in the first place if they already found a way to get here,” Her eyes went wide. “It must have been the changelings following me around, not ImageCorp. But why?” It seemed as if she was talking more to herself than me. I lay back against the chair and folded my arms. “Well as crazy as this all sounds, it’s the best I have so far. Thank you for your time, girls.” I got to my feet grabbing my burgundy coat that I had thrown over the chair. As I put it on, Sunset tugged my arm. “I-I want to help you,” She said in a sweet tone which made me leap backwards. “Out of the question!” I shot back at her and made my way towards the door. “You need me!” Sunset screamed storming up to me. “I know about Equestria and the Changelings. I’m also the only other person who would believe you.” I placed my hand on the doorknob. “Sunset, it’s too dangerous. You are just a high school student and I can’t put your life in jeopardy like that. No.” Slowly, I began to turn the knob. “I’m eighteen! I can take care of myself! I’m coming with you!” This is wrong. It’s dangerous but she’s got a point. She could help. “...Fine,” I sighed as I opened the door and walked into the hallway. No footsteps came from behind me. I turned to see her standing there with her mouth gaping. “You coming?” “Yeah. I’m just surprised at your answer is all.” Sunset began walking behind me. “So, where are we going?” “Downtown. There’s an informant that may be able to tell me something.” I turned to her causing her to stop almost bumping into me. “It’s dangerous, Shimmer. So do as I say.” She nodded and we proceeded to the car. Opening the car door, I climbed in. Sunset followed suit as I adjusted the mirrors, catching a glimpse of my light yellow skin and short brown hair that could barely be seen under my hat. My blue eyes glanced over meeting Shimmer’s teal. She pulled the seat belt around her and buckled it, tightening it a bit. I put the keys in the ignition and turned starting the roaring engine. Pulling the shift into drive, I spun the wheel slightly to the left as I pulled out of the parking lot. Signaling, I turned right and drove down the rainy road. I kept my foot on the gas as my other leg shook causing me to reach for the pills in my pocket. Popping one, I twisted the cap but dropped the bottle. Sunset picked it up and read the label. “Xanax?” She glanced at me and handed over the bottle. “I didn’t take you for the nervous type.” I placed the pills in my pocket and shot her a glare. “It’s none of your business!” I snapped at her returning my gaze to the road. There wasn’t many cars on the road, only a few passing here and there. “I’m sorry I was just making conversation.” She turned her head looking out the window. “Why do you care about helping me?” I cocked an eyebrow. “Last time I checked, you didn’t help people, let alone a cop.” She let out a sigh lowering her head. “I’m not like that anymore. What happened to me... it changed me. When Twilight defeated me, I saw my what I had become, and I knew it was wrong. I also found the magic of friendship.” “Well, Shimmer I can’t trust you yet, no matter what those girls say.” Sunset fell silent as I drove onward. The drive became quite peaceful the rest of the way. The rain stopped, but the dark clouds remained. I flicked the windshield wipers off, causing them to cease in their movements. Soon, the large, beautiful houses became grimy, worn structures. Gang members tagged the various buildings with graffiti. There were many small stores and pawn shops. Girls in short skirts leaned into cars speaking with the drivers. “My wife.” I said suddenly causing Shimmer to quickly shoot me a confusing look. “What? Your wife?” She asked. “She was killed on that corner back when I lived in this part of town.” I explained pointing my finger to a corner where a small memorial was set up.   “I-I didn’t know. I’m sorry to hear that.” She put her hand on my shoulder. “It isn’t your fault. That’s why I take the Xanax. That’s why I became a cop and pushed my limits to become Captain,” I confessed. “How old was she?” Sunset spoke softly taking her hand off my shoulder. “I was married to her for one year. She was only twenty.” I fought tears shaking my head. “Why are you telling me this?” Sunset asked quizzically. “I figure whether I can trust you or not you’re still helping me on this so something’s different.” I gave her a small smile as I turned into the parking lot of a club. The club was small but a short line of people could be seen. A large neon sign hung above the entrance. It glew a bright blue and read: The Alicorn As I pulled into a parking space, I turned the car off and unbuckled. Sunset did as well and we both climbed out of the car. “Stay with me and don't provoke anyone,” I ordered. “Okay, mom,” She said sarcastically rolling her eyes. “This isn’t a joke Shimmer! The Alicorn is a club where all the scum of the town hang out. It’s also where the up-and-coming DJ Pon-3 performs,” I explained to her giving her a serious look. “She goes to my school. Vinyl Scratch,” Shimmer nodded. “I’ve been here before.” My jaw dropped. “Doesn’t surprise me.” I shook my head and began walking to the entrance. We came up behind a line of ten or so. The people in front of us whispered as we walked by the line. We received stares and one person yelled ‘pig’ which made me grit my teeth. Finally, we came to the bouncer who was tall and muscular. His skin was a gray and his hair a dark green. He wore a t-shirt and sweats and had his arms folded staring down at us. “Can I help you, Captain?” The bouncer asked in a deep voice. “I need to see Notepad.” I said simply flashing my badge. Without hesitation, the bouncer lifted the hooked red line and allowed us to go inside. I motioned for Sunset to stay behind me as we walked down a narrow gray hallway and up some red-carpeted steps. We came to the dancefloor where various people were dancing and grinding. Lights of various colors flashed as dubstep played through the large speakers on stage. Many tables were set off to the side with some people drinking and laughing while others were making out. I glanced to the stage as Sunset and I pushed our way through the crowd. Vinyl Scratch could be seen on stage spinning the records on the turn-tables. She wore a pair of headphones occasionally calling out to the crowd in excitement. She wore her shades as her blue hair bounced back in forth while she swayed in the same motion. We arrived at the bar where a dozen different drinks sat behind the counter. The bartender was cleaning a glass while a few ponies sat in the stools that lined the bar. They were drinking and giving looks as I came up. “Excuse me, I’m looking for Notepad.” I said to the bartender He looked up from his glass. The bartender looked like the bouncer’s twin, only he was shorter and scrawnier. “Over there.” He pointed to a table off to the side. I nodded and proceeded to the table. The music was more muffled now as we approached. Notepad sat at the table scribbling various notes as he sipped a drink. He was a pale white with cyan hair. I took a seat and Sunset followed suit. “Always writing what you see,” I said in a friendly tone. “And to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?” Notepad asked sounding annoyed. He didn’t glance up from his notes only scribbling faster. “Canterlot High was attacked and an item was stolen,” I explained. Notepad glanced up only to laugh. “I didn’t know the police were so desperate they handled petty school thefts now.” I slammed my fist on the table. “It wasn’t a petty theft! Do you know a man named Brute?” This caused him to shift around in his seat a little. “I know of him. I’ve never met him or seen him before. Who’s the girl?” He pointed to Sunset. “Sunset Shimmer,” she proclaimed with a smirk. “The Sunset Shimmer? Why are you hanging around with a cop?” “That’s none of your damn business! Now answer the questions and maybe we won’t hurt you!” Sunset said smugly, taking solace in her cop companion. I put a hand over her mouth. “Shut it, Shimmer!” She rolled her eyes and pushed my hand away, giving me a nod. “Do you know any of his associates or where he might hang around?” I continued my questioning, turning my gaze back towards him. “No. He’s a ghost,” Notepad answered shaking his head. “Why do you think it was so easy for him to attack Canterlot High? Maybe you should take a look at your own department.” He returned to his note-taking. I stood up and grabbed him by his shirt pulling him up to my face. “I let you keep your dealings going in exchange for information!” I yelled in his face. Narrowing my eyes, I pressed my nose against his. “Unless you want a pair of cuffs around your wrists, I suggest you tell me what you know!” I demanded throwing him back into his chair. Notepad straightened his shirt as he cleared his throat. I sat back down with a cocky smirk on my face. “Now, then. Tell me.” “Yes, well… look, I know a rumor that’s it, but it’s crazy to say the least,” He said in a softer tone. I leaned back resting my hands behind my head. “With what happened today, crazy might not be such a bad thing.” Notepad leaned in and began to whisper. “There’s a rumor floating around that Brute is working for someone they call the Queen. I’ve done countless searches but there is no criminal in this town by that name. Then, I heard that Brute can change his form like a shape-shifter. As crazy as that sounds it would explain why no criminal I know has ever dealt with him. They wouldn’t know it was him. I also hear from some of the more paranoid criminals that these shape-shifters have infiltrated various gangs and even police precincts. Some even say the mayor’s office is compromised. That’s all I know,” He finished. I stood up. “Thank you for your time. Come on Sunset.” She quickly got to her feet and leaned in toward Notepad. “We’ll be back if you’re lying!” Sunset said in a hushed yell gritting her teeth. I pulled her away. “Come on!” She yanked her arm away from mine. “I can walk by myself, ya know!” Sunset rebuked folding her arms as we walked back towards the exit. Simply ignoring her comment, I made my way through the crowd. Sunset followed farther behind, staring daggers into the back of my skull. Why is she mad at me? She’s the embarrassing one! I couldn’t help but roll my eyes as we made our way down the stairs. The bouncer let us out and we walked around a corner onto a sidewalk. The car was parked across the street in the parking lot. Looking for cars, we darted across the street, quickly climbing into the car. Sunset slammed the door and furiously jammed her buckle in. “‘The hell you mad at me for?” I asked looking at her, dumbfounded. “I was just trying to help!” She yelled without turning to face me. “Help what? I had it under control. You were acting like an idiot!” I rebuked starting the car. Sunset shook her head. “Just... whatever!” She breathed a sigh and calmed her tone. “So, what do we do now?” she said, losing no sternness in her facial expressions. I turned my head looking to back out. As I backed out of the parking space, I said, “To the precinct. I need to find out if everything’s all right. My radio wasn’t working at the school and no cops ever showed up after the fact.” “Why’d we come here first then?” I drove onto the street and began driving toward the precinct. “I needed answers and leads.” I replied simply keeping my eyes on the road. “I’ve always been that way. Case first.” The rest of the ride was silent until we came to a long, straight-forward road. Not many cars were passing by. I glanced at the green-colored numbers on the digital clock. 10:45? Where’d the time go. “Shouldn’t you be getting home, Shimmer?” I asked worriedly. “I live nowhere. I have no home. I told you that I’m from another world. I live from shelter to shelter mostly sleeping on park benches farther out of town. Nobody at school knows.” she said that last part almost under her breath with a look of such sadness on her face. It was a look I had never seen upon her face before. “I-I’m sorry. I didn’t know. Forget I asked.” Sunset doesn’t have a house; no parents; no place to go? Poor girl. “If you want, since you’re helping me out… I have a spare room at my house. You could stay with me for a bit.” I offered. “Really? You’d do that for me?” Sunset looked at me in confusion, yet there was a distinct emotion in her eyes. Hope. After a little while I nodded. “Yeah, I mean I hate to see you living on the streets. It’s fine.” “Nobody has ever been nice to me like that? Why?” “Like I said, it isn’t right for you to be living on the streets.” Suddenly, the window shattered from the impact of bullets tearing through the car . We ducked, swerving to the right. The cacophony of bullets caused a spider web of cracks to open up all over the windshield like fresh wounds, as the bullets passed by their heads an almost imperceivable distance. “I can’t see anything!” I screamed. “It’s them! How did they find us?” Sunset cried out. “The club! They must have followed us!” I answered. I heard a beeping in front of me and I veered to the left popping my head up. The bullets fired into the other car shattering the windshield. The other driver was shot multiple times as the pursuing car veered into our lane. Bullets stopped ringing through the air, meaning someone was reloading. The third car swerved chaotically and soon crashed into a nearby tree, denting the entire front of it. I slammed on the brakes causing the tires to squeal as the vehicle halted. The car behind us rammed into the rear of our car. Our car jolted forward on impact and I slammed on the gas driving forward. Reaching for my pistol, I pulled it out and turned my head. Aiming the pistol, I shot the driver and continued forward. We didn’t talk the rest of the way but I knew Sunset was scared. I was scared. I couldn’t stop shaking from all of the adrenalin. We arrived at the precinct after a while, and I pulled into my parking space. Little did I know the journey had just begun.
