Ponies always invented different tales about that night. Celastia’s worst night. It was only her that knew the true tale. It all started one early morning. Luna lowered the moon and Celestia raised the sun. It was only then that Luna looked over her kingdom. She saw everypony, waking up and welcoming the new day. Luna smiled. But that smile didn’t last long. That same day, at dawn, Luna raised the moon and Celestia lowered the sun. Luna saw all her subjects feeling sad and slowly heading for their homes.“Tia, why are they sad? Is it because of my night? Is it not beautiful enough for them?!” Luna asked angrily.“Lulu, don’t be mad. Your night is beautiful, romantic, maybe it’s just a bad day for our subjects,” Celestia responded peacefully. Luna felt that that was not the case. She knew Celestia was only saying that. Luna went into her room. She laid in her bed and cried.“Nopony loves me! I am worthless! I only bring the night, a cold and dark period! They all hate me!” said Luna to herself. Luna cried herself to sleep. Why didn’t her subjects adore her? Every night she made such a marvelous show with her stars. Luna went like that for day and days on end. Her unhappiness grew every day. The jealousy she had for her sister was overtaking her. Celestia brought light, so she was loved. Luna brought darkness, so she was hated. One morning, while Celestia was raising the sun, Luna rushed into her sister’s room. She threw Celestia’s precious things at the tall walls. She ripped every document or paper she had. She threw her quills out the window. She only did all this because of the anger her unhappiness brought along. When Celestia entered the room she was mad.“LUNA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” asked Celestia. Luna flew out the window, she landed on the balcony of her room. She took out an old and empty journal and wrote:Why don’t my subjects adore me? Or like me at least? I know that I bring coolness and darkness to their land, but if it wasn’t for me they wouldn’t be sleeping! If it wasn’t for me they wouldn’t stay united near the fireplace and drink hot cocoa! So if I bring those simple but wonderful things, why do they boast? Luna put the quill down. She waited patiently for her sister to come. After a while, she did.“Luna, what were you think-“ said Celestia.“GET OUT! NOW!!” screamed Luna. Celestia exited the room. What is wrong with Luna? She thought to herself. The following day Luna wouldn’t eat, sleep or drink. She was turning mad. Celestia tried to calm her down, but Luna wanted none of that. She wanted revenge. Luna’s heart was now filled with anger and jealousy. There was no turning back now. One dawn, Luna refused to raise the moon.“Let them have sunlight forever, sister. They don’t enjoy the dark, do they?” said Luna.“But sister, it is your royal duty and you must-“ said Celestia.“SEE IF I CARE!” said Luna as she rushed out of the room. This happened day after day, but there was worse to come. CelestIa had to raise the moon and the sun, which made her exhausted. Luna decided that she had to end this. She started her normal routine, she raised the moon, but then she stopped. In the morning she refused to lower the moon. No matter how hard her sister begged her, she didn’t. Luna was turning evil. The crops of the earth ponies didn’t grow. Equestria was starving. As Luna was flying over Ponyville once, she saw the starving ponies, Luna smiled at that sight. She was now truly evil. One night she was in her room as Celestia came in and told her to go in the dining room. Celestia told her sister that if she doesn’t lower the moon she will have to be imprisoned. As Luna heard that, the last drop of sanity in her disappeared. Suddenly, blue smoke surrounded Luna. Something strange was happening. Luna felt her body change, it was a very strange feeling. Celestia watched as her sister was morphing into something terrible. After the blue smoke disappeared, in front of Celestia’s eyes there wasn’t Luna , but Nightmare Moon.“Sister, what happened?” asked Celestia.“SISTER?! YOU DARE CALL ME SISTER?! AFTER ALL YOU HAVE DONE TO ME! I AM NIGHTMARE MOON! AND THERE SHALL BE NO MORE SUNLIGHT IN EQUESTRIA EVER AGAIN!” exclaimed Nightmare Moon angrily. Celestia realized what she had to do. It was the saddest thing she could possibly do, but it HAD to be done. Celestia realized that she couldn’t reason with her sister, so the only way was to, fight her. Celestia battled Nightmare Moon with all the magic that she had. Nightmare Moon fought back. Nightmare Moon was more powerful than her sister, and that resulted in defeating Celestia. After Celestia’s defeat, Nightmare Moon flew out of the castle and announced that the sun shall never shine again. Meanwhile, Celestia thought of a plan. The only thing more powerful than Nightmare Moon were the elements of harmony. So Celestia took it upon herself to be the wielder of all the elements of harmony. Once Nightmare Moon was back, Celestia challenged her to another duel. Nightmare Moon was amused, thinking that she will easily defeat Celestia, but she accepted. Little did she know that she was about to be defeated. With the power of the elements of harmony Nightmare Moon was defeated. But the job still wasn’t done. Celestia still had to take Luna out of Nightmare Moon. The only way that was possible was by a very hard hit. Celestia hit Nightmare Moon with all her power, but Celestia wasn’t strong enough to have control of where the magic hit. That is why Nightmare Moon was headed for the moon itself. Celestia concentrated all her power, and for one second before banishing her sister to the moon, she saw Luna with tears in her eyes, asking her“Tia, why are you hurting me?”asked Luna. Celestia knew she had to continue or Luna would turn back into Nightmare Moon. After banishing her sister to the moon Celestia burst into tears. Originally, the spell made it so that Luna would never be able to come back. However, after years of research and study Celestia found a spell that would make it possible for Luna to come back, however, only after a thousand years. Celestia casted the spell. Every night, for a thousand years, Celestia would sing a lullaby for Luna, awaiting her arrival.
