The Darkest Nightmare
Prologue
Load Full StoryNext ChapterAs any other day this one started off grand. The sun was warm and pleasant, children were at play, and the royal gardens were as relaxing as ever. Luna, being free of any royal duties at the time, decided to enjoy her sister's day in these gardens. She rarely got the chance to have time for herself and liked to spend it observing the world around her. At the very edge of the gardens was a short fence separating the grounds for the Canterlot Grade School. Luna found joy in watching the young fillies and colts run and having fun. It made her long for a much simpler time. A time when she wasn't judged by her mistakes and actions. She was only smiled at and given the excuse of "foals will be foals". What careless behavior she got away with. It made her chuckle at the thought of it. "What if that were the case when I decided to never lower the moon?" she thought aloud, "Then everypony would just not care at what was being done, they would compare it to mere child's play."
"What if I could somehow make my younger self achieve only what I used to dream of!"
She then paused realizing her thoughts went back to her once evil self. She hated that about herself. She always had a slight yearning, an urge to go back to her wicked ways. But the efforts would be futile and in vain because of the love she had for her sister and new friends. She was still punished for doing wrong in her younger years anyway. That idea of a young foal taking over the world is simply absurd.
Her dashing thoughts were interrupted by the clicking of hooves on the stone trail behind her. "Hello Sister. Enjoying this fine day I see." Celestia warmly greeted her.
"Why yes sister. Tis not often I get to enjoy a day free from working on my royal duties." Luna kindly responded.
" Well then Luna, why don't you take the night off too then and enjoy the nightlife in the city for a change. You'd be delighted to see what others do when the sun lowers." Celestia offered.
"Oh but sister, I couldn't possibly give you such a burden after working all day too!" Luna protested
"You can repay me some time if you wish. I just want you to see the living city instead of your usual Everfree Forest survey. If anything were to happen you would be the first informed Luna."
"Alright dear sister. Thank You!" Luna weakly replied while embracing her sister to show appreciation. Only that was not the largest of emotions being felt at the time. A nervous almost distressing feeling filled Luna's heart as her mind began to think those cruel and evil thoughts again.
"CAN YOU BELIEVE HER! SHE WANTS TO CONTROL THE MOON AND TAKE YOUR GUARD DUTIES BECAUSE SHE FEELS OF YOUR INCAPABILITIES TO FULFIILL THEM!"
"You Should Always Be The One To Raise The Moon! AND BE SURE IT NEVER MOVES AGAIN!!"
The thoughts were as distinct as another pony speaking in her ear. They were invading her mind and trying to make her want the evil ways back. There was something needing to be done about it, but fear of banishment kept her from revealing anything to Celestia.
"I wish to enjoy the rest of my day alone now sister. I'm going back into the castle"
Luna trotted into the castle where she headed straight for the library. After searching she came to a spell book for mental aspects of magic. She searched for anything that could help her with her evil thoughts.
After much searching she came to a titleless spell. It stated, however, that certain thoughts could be expelled froman individual's mind. This peaked luna's interest, and without anymore thorough investigating, she hurried up to her bed chamber to test out the new spell. As she passed a window she realized that the moon was already up. The library contained thousands of books, but no windows and Luna searched for a much longer period of time than she had expected. She ignored this however as she entered her room. She read the method for casting the spell and began with all her power.
"This is a large number being used by my magic," she thought, "This must not be just a regular spell!"
With a flash of light it was complete and although mentally she felt the same, physically Luna was exhausted. She decided sleep rather than sightseeing would help her tremendously, and if the spell happened to work, there'll be no more worrying about those dreaded memories.
Luna climbed into her bed and turned out the lights. She was unable to comfortably lay still however. She tossed and turned and grew very uneasy. Luna decided to open a window for the cool night air to flow in. As she opened it she noticed her telescope on the deck pointing toward her and Celestia's old castle. She decided to look through and caught a nice image of one of its tower windows.
Moving back into the bed her head began to slightly ache. She was able to fall asleep despite the pain. She was falling into a rough sleep but it was rest none the less. but how good of one relied in the dreams.
Luna opened her eyes to the ruins of the old castle. It startled her at the feel of the world. She was able to realize that she was in fact dreaming but not sleeping well, due to her current awareness of the situation. She decided to explore but felt uneasy about the experience. Something, although in the dream, felt uneasy. She felt drawn to a specific part of the castle. It dawned to her that she was curious about the part that she saw through the telescope. Luna then ran to where the window she saw was, but as she turned the corned to the hallway she noticed a black shadowy figure standing by the window. Not a single feature other than the distinct pony like shape. Luna called out "Hello?" and like a flash the figure stood before her with solid white glowing eyes, so terrifying that it woke her up instantly. She shakily reminded herself that it was merely a dream. No matter the feeling, it was just a dream. A spark of curiosity remained however as Luna looked out to her telescope that was facing that very same window in the dream. She slowly crept to it and peered into the lens only to see an empty window. She Breathed a sigh of relief drawing back from the scope. Just as a sign of reassurance she looked back into the window, only to find a pair of white eyes staring back at her.
