The beginning...that’s what I called it.  Little did I know how right I was.  I was awoken this morning to a deafening roar outside my window.  It was like a bulldozer had driven through my room at full throttle.  Over the night it seems like the entire Army showed up.  We’re talking tanks, armored cars, helicopters, the whole nine yards.  The “portal” is now barricaded off, no one can get within 100 yards of the thing.  I can see a whole bunch of army personnel in Hazmat suits doing tests around the “portal”, but it seems like nothing has happened to it.  It looks the same as it did yesterday.  It seems weird to me that something like this would just appear and then not do anything.  I think half of us expected the minions of Hell to pour out of it.  I guess we can consider ourselves lucky that it didn’t go that way.

Obviously I didn’t got to work, because it had been indefinitely suspended.  In the long run I think we can all tell that we’re all gonna be in major financial trouble when...whatever this is blows over, but we don’t really care at this point.  I took the extra time that I had to walk around.  Surprisingly the soldiers we’re fairly accommodating as long as you didn’t go anywhere near the “portal”.  I swear, our town population must have increased ten fold by now.  All the news stations are still here, apparently covering the event as it is happening, although nothing has happened so far.

As I walked through the town there was a general sense of unease that filled the air.  I suppose that is to be expected when an event like this happens in a small town.  The shops remained open and people were going about their normal routine, but you could just tell that everyone was a bit on edge.  I couldn’t tell if they were scared about what was happening or just couldn’t comprehend everything going on around them.  I myself felt like I was in a bit of shock, it’s not everyday a “portal” opens up next to your work.

For everything that was happening my day was fairly normal.  I did some shopping and talked to a few of my friends that I met while I was out, although there was only one topic of discussion.  They mainly shared my feelings that they didn’t quite know what was going on, but they didn’t feel as if it was a dangerous situation.  It was when I was heading home that something finally happened.

I was walking by the site of the “portal” on my way home when a strange buzzing noise started to echo throughout the area.  It was very quiet at first, so quiet that I didn’t even think it was real.  I tried to ignore it, but when I saw everyone else’s reactions it was clear that everyone could hear it.  Then came a loud “whoosh” sound and a flash of light.  As everyone scanned the area to determine the source of the flash many people started to point at the portal and whisper to the people next to them.  As we all turned to look the flash happened again.  This time it was apparent that it was the “portal”, and it seemed as if the swirling effect of the “portal” had increased in velocity.  As we watched, the buzzing continued to get louder and the swirling and flashes of light were going faster. I took a few steps back, I had the feeling something like an explosion was going to happen. Finally, there was one final flash of light and I turned away. Upon turning back to the scene, I had to double check that I hadn’t damaged my eyes, because what I saw there could not have been real.

Now standing in front of the portal was what looked to be a small horse, a pony perhaps. But it was unlike any horse that I had ever seen. It was a soft lavender color with an indigo mane and tail that had purple and pink streaks through it. On its flank was a picture of some sort, but it was to far away to see what exactly it was, and I thought that I saw a horn on its head, like a unicorn.

Of all the things that could come through that portal, I suppose we can definitely call it that now, this was not even close to what I expected. The air seemed really tense now. Most of the soldiers in the area had raised their guns, more out of reflex than anything else. One of the soldiers, that looked to be the person in charge was yelling, “Hold your fire!” at any of the men that had raised their weapons. The pony to seemed to take on a rather defensive stance, but looked to calm down a bit when the Lieutenant came out. After a few minutes the Lieutenant started to approach the pony.

The next few events were too quiet to hear exactly what was going on. The News crews were frenzying. Every single one was crowding around the area trying to see what was happening. I could see the Lieutenant standing next to the pony talking to it, and it was...talking back to him?  Is that even possible? I mean, I guess the appearance should tip me off that this isn’t a normal pony, but I was still in disbelief that it could talk. With everything that was going on, there was no way to hear what either of them were saying, but after a few minutes, they both walked off together towards the makeshift HQ they had made themselves.  After that, the soldiers in the area tried to get the crowd that had formed to disperse. I could tell that wasn’t going to be easy for them.

Personally, I was glad to call it a day at that point. So much had happened. I needed to mull it over in my head. The Earth had just made contact with an interdimensional being for the first time in history, and it’s literally taking place a few hundred yards from my house. It was a lot to take in. Right now it’s 11:30 p.m., and there is still a mess of reporters and News crews running around. But that pony, no one has seen it since it walked away with the Lieutenant. For now, I guess, we’ll just have to see what the future holds.
