The Truth of the Eye of Magnus
Chapter 2: Royal Introduction
Previous ChapterNext ChapterTwilight and Dovahkiin's trip to Canterlot went well. They learned a lot about each other, their worlds, and the differences of each. Twilight learned about his adept fighting ability and Dovahkiin, who, during the trip, introduced himself as Dyro Fas, learned about Twilight's own ability with magic. They both compared magic spells and noticed that they had a lot of spells in common, except that Dyro possessed spells that were specifically meant to cause harm, where all of Twilight's spells were meant to manipulate the world around them. That then lead Dyro to speak about his other types of magic: Shouts.
He explained to Twilight about his shouts and about why he can use them. He told her about him being "Dragonborn" and how that is very rare and important it is in his world. When he mentioned slaying dragons, Twilight seemed appalled to the concept, but he quickly assured her that dragons were much different in his world than in hers. At least, he assumed so. He told her how in his world, death was a common thing to run into, and that dragons did it very often, thus slaying dragons was a good thing. She didn't seem to fond of the subject, but she didn't think of him as a monster either.
Dyro also learned how to walk in his new form. Granted, he had some trouble, but with the help of Twilight's magic, and the trustworthy tactic of trial and error, he managed. Luckily he'd been around enough horses so he was familiar with the horses movement.
Another thing Dyro learned on the way was how to utilize his horn. It took a few tries, but soon he was able to conjure up any spell he had in his arsenal.
They arrived at Canterlot in good spirits. Twilight started to take a liking to Dyro, and Dyro, who still wasn't very sure about this world, felt like he could trust Twilight. He thought of her as his only friend in this world, but felt a bit guilty as he thought of Lyra. He guessed she was his friend too. After all, she was the only one who hadn't freaked when they saw him...In his human form, that is.
Twilight nodded towards what Dyro assumed was the castle that the princesses resided in. It was rather large in comparison to the city...In fact it seemed larger than the city itself. He tried to follow close to Twilight, but the streets were crowded. Ponies moved in every direction, eventually making it hard to see Twilight at all.
"Hey, wait up!" He tried to shout, but it was drowned out by the cacophony that surrounded him.
He trotted forwards, pushing past mares and colts alike until he emerged at a clearing. Ponies surrounded a pair of ponies, one of which was Twilight, and the other, much larger, was a brown stallion. He looked down on Twilight, glaring.
"Watch where you're going," He snarled.
Twilight took a step back. "I-I'm so sorry, I was just looking for my friend."
"Yeah? Well you should've been looking at where you were walking, lady!"
"Sir, I apologize for bumping into you. Perhaps we could both walk away from here and forget this event ever happened?" She smiled sheepishly.
He scoffed. "I don't think so. Nopony bumps into Bruce without learning a lesson before they leave."
Twilight gulped. Her horn glowed and with a flash, she was gone.|
"Hey! Where'd she go?!" He stamped around, his nostrils flaring. Now even more ponies crowded around.
Dyro decided to speak up. "What does it matter?"
He pony snapped to his direction. "Who said that?"
Dyro stepped forth. "I did."
Bruce narrowed his eyes. "You got a lot of nerve, pipsqueak. Nopony talks to Bruce like that!"
Dyro rolled his. "Why's that? You gonna crush me?"
"No, I'm going to pulverize you!" He charged at Dyro.
"Oh...Crap." He didn't expect to fight so soon. He quickly side-stepped, only narrowly dodging Bruce's attack.
Bruce recovered after knocking a few ponies aside, and turned, charging at him again. This time, however, when Dyro went to dodge, he stopped and turned on his front hooves, bucking Dyro in the chin and sending him flying.
Dyro looked down, the testosterone filled stallion huffing and puffing below. He took this chance and summoned a fireball, sending it straight down at him.
Bruce saw it come towards him, but he didn't register the danger of the projectile. He stepped to the side, but was caught off guard as it exploded, sending him into the crowd, effectively taking out approximately ten ponies.
Dyro attempted to land, but failed and fell down onto his flank. He heard a snicker from someone in the audience, but he didn't pay it any mind. He instead watched the hole in the crowd where Bruce disappeared to. As Dyro rose up, he heard a deep growl, but he couldn't pinpoint its exact location.
"I'm. Going. TO KILL YOU!" Bruce barreled out of the crowd, his head low, towards Dyro.
Dyro tried to get out of the way, but he didn't move fast enough and was clipped to the side, flying into the crowd. He swore he kicked at least three ponies while in mid-air, but his thoughts were interrupted when he hit the ground. Rolling about two feet and onto his hooves, he looked back at the brute that was Bruce and noticed he was running in place. In fact, as Dyro looked closer, there seemed to be a golden aura around him holding him still. Suddenly, the crowd all fell into a bowing position, their eyes closed and their heads lowered.
"Uh..." He looked around. 'What's going on?' He thought.
Two pairs of white hooves crashed down in front him, sending him staggering backwards. He looked up to see a rather large, white unicorn/pegasus scowling down at him. She adorned a crown a rather magnificent mane and tail that flowed with the wind, even when there wasn't wind.
"What's going on here?!" She bellowed down to him. He wished he could teleport away like Twilight could.
'That's what I would like to know...' He wanted to say, but felt that doing so now would end up with him turning into a nice, warm, pile of ash. "Well, er, he attacked me first!" He said quickly. 'What am I, three years old?'
"Attacked you?!" She turned to the still squirming stallion, who was facing the other way and hadn't seen her yet.
"LET ME GO! I'LL CRUSH WHOEVER IS HOLDING ME HERE!! AAAGGHHH!!!!"
The large pony casually walked to the thrashing stallion. "Is that so?" She looked at him, now in front.
His eyes widened. "P-P-Prince-Princess!" He bowed. "I-I didn't mean it, I swear!"
"Is that so? Well, Bruce, if it wasn't me, would you have meant it?"
"N-No! I'd never hurt anypony!"
'Damned liar... He thought.
"Then what's this commotion about?" She asked, leaning in closer to his face.
The big tough pony began to quiver. "I'm sorry, princess, it won't happen again!"
"You know how I feel about violence in my kingdom, Bruce," She glared at him.
"Yes, your majesty, I understand. It won't happen again! I swear!"
She nodded and released him. Immediately the pony ran, balling his eyes out.
She turned to Dyro, an even expression on her face. 'My turn...' He thought.
She strode towards him, her chin held high and her eyes cast down upon him. "And who are you?"
The gulped and formed an awkward bow. "My name is Dyro. Dyro Fas, ma'am." He was tense, the crowd was tense, and the air was tense.
"Dyro...Dyro..." She rolled the name around in her head for a bit before something hit her. Her eyes widened, but she quickly reverted back to her demoralizing gaze. "Follow me, stallion. I need to speak with you. Alone."
He nodded. "Yes, of course." He stood up and was suddenly blinded by a bright light. The light, emanating from Celestia's horn, surrounded him and he felt as if time itself was stretching. Another burst of even more intense light stopped the distorting.
"Open your eyes."
Dyro did, and what he saw confused him. He wasn't in the center of the ponies any more, but in a small room with a large window to his right. There were two beds, one behind him, one behind the large pony in front of him.
"You...What is your last name?" Celestia's voice was low, and for some reason, Dyro felt that if he got this question wrong, it'd be the end of him.
"Fas. Dyro Fas," His head was still lowered.
She gave a sigh. Whether it was out of relief, disappointment, or annoyance he wasn't sure. "Do you...Do you know anything about...An Eye of-" She was cut off as a bright flash occurred next to her.
"Princess don't! He was defending me! It's not his fault!" Twilight zipped in front of Dyro, her head bowed.
Dyro staggered backwards, the sudden appearance and the face full of flank a bit too much to handle at one time. He shook his head and looked up at the two, watching them.
Celestia regarded Twilight and lifted her chin. "Twilight, I've told you before, there's no need to bow to me. You are a princess as well," She smiled.
Twilight fixed her posture, but still didn't meet Celestia's gaze. "Oh, right, sorry...But wait! Dyro!" Now Twilight raised her gaze to meet Celestia's. "Don't punish him, please! He was defending me!"
'Where were you earlier when the bastard attacked me?' Dyro thought to himself.
Celestia smiled. "I know that, Twilight, I wasn't going to punish him...I just needed to talk to him in private. There's...Something that needs to be...Dealt with. Something important," She smiled at Twilight.
"Oh, alright then," She gave a sigh of relief and sat down next to Dyro, smiling at him. "Thanks. That was very noble of you."
Dyro smiled at her back. "Oh, it's nothing. The guy was being disrespectful towards a lady, that's just unacceptable."
Celestia stared at Twilight, looking impatient.
Twilight looked to Celestia as well, smiling, not quite getting the message.
"Twilight," Celestia began. "I wish to discuss this matter with Dyro. Alone." She tried not to seem like she was being rude, but this was something that Twilight wasn't really ready to hear.
Twilight seemed taken aback, but she abided by the princess's wish. She got up and Celestia opened the door for her. Twilight gave Dyro a smile before the door closed.
Celestia cleared her throat. "Do you know anything of an Eye of Magnus?" She rose a brow.
Dyro's heart sank. "E-Eye of Magnus? How do you...?"
"Do you know of the Eye of Magnus?"
"Yes. That's why I appeared here, I believe. I was trying to calm the Eye down; it was proving to be unstable. I was using the Staff of Magnus to try and calm it down.
Celestia nodded, like she knew what he was talking about. "A colleague and I created the Eye."
"W-What? You created the Eye of Magnus?"
"Yes," Celestia began to pace around the room. "We wanted to confirm a theory that we had: That there were infinite amounts of universes, all different than our own. We called it the multiverse theory. But it prove it, we needed to find a way to link our world with others, so we began to look in the one thing we knew best: Magic.
"Magic has so many different properties, some we don't know about. My colleague and I decided to delve into the properties of magic, hoping to find a lead of some sort. It took us weeks, but eventually we found what we were looking for. We found a correlation between magic and matters in the universe. Turns out all carbon-based matter contains some traces of magic. After this discovery, we delved deeper to the sub-atomic level where we found traces of magic still where magic was holding atoms together. This then lead to the conclusion that magic is in all matter, no matter what.
"With this discovery, we had to make sure we tested it, just in case we were mistaken. We began casting spells on pairs of objects, attempting to fuse them together by intertwining the magic within each object and pulling them together. After a lot of hard work and constant fusing, we confirmed our suspicions. That's when my colleague and I thought up of a rather radical idea: What if we could somehow convert our bodies into small magical particles, moving through matter, time, and space, to different universes?
"We acted on it immediately, brainstorming as to how we would be able to convert are bodies into such a form, but it turns out we had already known. All we had to do was fuse our bodies with air. Of course, we couldn't do it ourselves. We needed a partner...We needed test subjects..." She looked down now and stopped pacing. "We...We used captured changelings as test subjects..."
Before she continued to confuse him any more, he wanted to know what a "changeling" was. "Ma'am, what exactly is a 'changeling'?"
Celestia looked up to him, frowning. "A changeling is a creature that can change its form to make it look like another pony else."
"...So, it changes its appearance? To fool others, correct?"
"Typically, yes. You are correct."
Dyro nodded. "Ok, good. At least I understand something now," He gave a nervous smile. She still intimidated him a bit.
Celestia smiled. "I'm sorry to have confused you. I understand that your world is not quite as scientifically developed as others. I shouldn't have gone so far into explaining," She gave a sheepish grin.
'Did she just call me stupid?' Dyro thought.
"Anyways," Celestia began. "We ended up creating the Eye of Magnus, however initially we merely called it The Key for it was the key to unlocking the doors to all of the other universes.
It's made purely from magic and magical elements found here in Equestria. We also sealed it with old Equestrian symbols. That way, no one could access the power it holds. Unfortunately, we underestimated its power and misused it, accidentally sending it to a random dimension...This dimension being yours. Its history and story are that worlds alone, however its origin remains here, in Equestria," She looked at Dyro.
Dyro nodded. He understood most of what she was talking about, but there was a problem. "Ok, then how do you know my name?"
Celestia nodded. "I knew you'd ask sooner or later. You see, we were able to see into the Eye, and thus we were able to see a parallel universe to ours, one that was older. We saw that there was an enemy, one who somehow harnessed the power of the Eye of Magnus, and began traveling to different dimensions. He, or she, was gathering an army and fusing universes together and destroying others. He, or she, was the lord of time and space...They couldn't be stopped."
Dyro nodded once more. "So how do I fit in the equation?"
"I'm getting to that part," She turned and began walking towards the bed behind her. She lay down on the bed and looked to Dyro. "Upon seeing the destruction and chaos brought to our parallel universe, we sought a solution. We looked into the Eye, and it led us to you. It stated that you would bind your soul with the Eye at a point in time, stopping a mad mage from destroying your world and becoming a part of the Eye. That you would use a relic of great power, an extension of the Eye, to do it. This relic, was the Staff of Magnus, correct?"
"Yes, that is correct..." This was absolutely blowing his mind.
"That staff was what we used to see into the Eye, but like the Eye, it was too lost to your dimension. Fortunately, we had learned about you before the Eye vanished. Now, here you are. The Eye has brought you to us to help us in our time of need."
He looked out the window. "It doesn't seem like you need much help as of this moment."
She shook her head. "No, but we will need your help in the near future. I'm afraid my sister and I both sense the imminent danger towards our kingdom. We need your help, Dyro. We need you to find and stop this evil from corrupting the Eye and using its power. Will you help us?"
Dyro smirked. "Of course I will. This is my destiny after all, is it not?"
Celestia let out a sigh of relief, smiling. "This is, Dyro. I appreciate it, as do my subjects."
"Now," Dyro looked to the door. "Where do I start?"
This time, Celestia was at a loss for words. "To be honest, Dyro, I have no idea. I regret to admit that I did not look into the Eye at the time to find out. All I know, Dyro, is that you are destined to stop this evil. I'm sure you will find a way," She nodded.
Dyro bit his bottom lip and turned to the door. "I will begin my mission, Celestia. I promise you, I will save your world."
"I never thought I would rely on another being to save Equestria. Please be careful, Dyro."
He nodded briefly before trotting out of the door. Twilight was there talking to a rather large, dark blue pegasus/unicorn pony. She had a long, dark blue and purple mane and tail. Her cutie mark was that of the moon. She and Twilight seemed to be discussing something rather serious. Dyro could only assume by the expression on their faces. As he got closer, he heard the larger, one speak.
"...it needs to be taken care of, Twilight Sparkle. There is something going on back at Ponyville, and it isn't pleasant. I'm not sure how serious the situation is, but I trust you will be able to take care of it?"
Twilight nodded, a solemn expression on her face. "I will, Luna," She looked to the doors to find Dyro approaching. She regarded him with a smile. "Dyro, there's trouble in Ponyville. I'm going to take care of it. Will you be comfortable here with the princesses? Have you talked to them about....y'know?"
Dyro nodded. "Turns out I'm not leaving quite yet, Twilight. I'll explain on our way to Ponyville."
Twilight nodded. "Alright, let's hurry!" Twilight turned and trotted down the hall with Dyro right on her tail.
Luna watched the two round the corner and the sound of a teleportation spell was heard. Celestia walked up from behind her.
"Sister," Luna spoke. "Who was that pony?"
"That was Dyro. Dyro Fas. The human that will save Equestria from possibly the greatest evil we've ever faced..."
Luna was taken aback. "H-Human?! We are relying on a human for this?!" She glared at her sister. "Celestia, please tell me you haven't lost your mind!"
Celestia shook her head. "The Key chose him, Luna. Besides, he isn't just a human. He's a hero in his world. He has mastered magic in his dimension, magic that will help him in this journey. Don't be so quick to judge, sister," Celestia smiled. "Just have a little faith. I promise things will turn out just fine. Afterall, he is the Dragonborn."
"Dragonborn?" Luna asked.
"Yes," Celestia looked out the window towards the setting sun. "He is the Dragonborn, something even I have to respect."
