Equestria was once a peaceful country. Many of its inhabitants lived in harmony as there was nothing that could ruin it at all.
War had only been nothing but ancient history. It was in textbooks, museums and so many historical landmarks. It seemed quite virtually unknown to many. Not many ponies know about the past, let alone move forward to the future. They all wanted to do what is peaceful for their own country.
The war between the three races of Pegasi, Unicorns and Earth ponies was nothing but verbal. Weapons have not been used or mentioned in the Hearts' Warming Eve pageants.
However, that was all about to change...

You wore a cloak, hiding whatever physical characteristic you have that distinct your race. Many have mistook you for a stallion. Some for a mare. Sometimes, androgyny comes into play. Not many know your history or what you look like due to your obscure life. You were a pony of a few words, always reserved and cool-headed.
Here you are, standing in front of the military barracks of Canterlot. Both stallions and mares alike had been drafted to join the army. Nopony knew why the military had been building up. Rumours have been going around about Equestria waging war against neighbouring countries. It was all so sudden as how it suddenly came to be. However, it was simply confidential to the citizens. This was only between royalty and politicians. Many ponies have been critically vocal about this, comparing recruits as a newborn militia, inexperienced of any combat.
You take a deep breath as you hand in your letter of registration to the guard. He checks and reads the letter, making sure it was legitimate and real. A lot of anticipation goes into your heart as you hope to become legible. After 30 seconds, he nods and allows you entry to the barracks. You pass through and notice your surroundings.
There were pegasi, creating and forming tactical air formations. They created single files, V-shapes and so much creative positions.
Unicorns were practicing magic on combat dummies, using whatever skills they had learned. Be it offensive or defensive, so much had effected the lifeless mannequins.
Earth ponies were similar to infantry, having to use whatever strength they had to charge through the tough mannequins. They were quite tough, but they were being pushed back heavily.
The rest of the soldiers were simply either training with weapons or performing drills for a march. This is what ponies were talking about as you heard about stories of what they do in there. Sometimes there were positives, such as rigorous training and discipline building that helps the body. Negatives were that soldiers would have rebelled against their superiors through slacking or had to cope with the loss of their brethren. PTSD became a huge symptom for most stallions and mares. However, you doubt that it would happen to you. But then again, it all depends on the current nature you are in.
Just as you keep walking, somepony accidentally bumps you.
"Oh, sorry!" the voice exclaimed.
You turn around and see a mare with beige fur and blue eyes. She seemed quite beautiful for a member of the military army, as her blonde mane was beautifully braided as well as her tail. You notice that she has wings, meaning that she's a pegasus. You apologize as well, feeling that you yourself was being clueless of your surroundings.
"Tch. Typical Wing Dive." a menacing voice came in.
You look to see a unicorn stallion walking in, sighing as his head was held up high. He had a purple coat of fur, brown eyes and black medium length wavy hair which also matched his tail. He was wearing glasses, seemingly thin ones which allowed his narrowed eyes in sight.
The mare known as Wing Dive turned to the unicorn and snarled. "Put a sock in it, Astro Clash! I said that I was sorry!"
"Hmph! If you're going to provide a good example in front of your new comrades, at least show that you have an amount of common sense!" the unicorn known as Astro Clash retorted.
Both ponies began to butt heads in this glaring contest. You had no idea what to do when suddenly a pony stepped in. The stallion had a grey coat on his fur, white long one-sided mane and straight tail with green eyes. With nothing special, it seemed as if he was an Earth pony.
"C'mon, fellas. Let's not try picking fights on the newbies' first day." he said in a calm and friendly tone.
Wing Dive and Astro Clash turned around, crossed arms and walked off somewhere. You had no idea what just happened. The Earth stallion approached you.
"Sorry about that. These two seemed to go at each other's throats." he explained before offering you a handshake. "Earth Breaker."
You accept the handshake and tell him your name.
"Well, you better get ready for assembly. The commander is about to come out and make his speech. Allow me to lead you to the new group."
You nod as you follow him. There's gotta be a lot of colourful personalities around the military barracks.
You are in front of the stage along with the assembled new recruits as a middle-aged pony comes walking up on the stage to deliver his speech.
"It is with great honor to introduce you new recruits to our military headquarters. I am Commander Garrison, 265th Commander of the Equestrian Army."
He continues to give out his speech about the consequences of warfare, the history of the previous army and the honors of defending the country against harm's way. It was that kind of speech you would hear on the first day of high school.
"Without further ado, I would like to introduce the top three elite squads of our army. Introducing first, the Alpha squad."
Coming up on stage is Astro Clash. He doesn't seem to have that same demeanor the last you saw him.
"The Alpha Squad is a powerful unit of unicorns, having persevered in any type of magic. Whether it be Arcane or Divine magic, unicorn soldiers will be able to use whatever they can to protect us and defeat the enemy with trickery and mysticism."
Astro began to perform some convincing illusion magic in front of the audience. A lot were frightened of the unicorn's spell of creating an illusionary shadow monster. After that, Astro gave a salute and walked off.
"Next, we have the Omega squad."
Wing Dive flew down towards the stage and looked at the crowd.
"The Omega squad are a strong unit of pegasi who are able to make the forces of nature turn against the enemy. Whether big or small, it is a really useful aspect."
Dive flew up to the sky with high velocity and twirled around, forming a double twister. It was as if long dragons were about to form a dangerous bond with each other. Many were amazed by this skill, especially the pegasi. Wing flew down and also gave a salute. She gave a small wink before walking off stage, leaving the stallions in the audience to blush slightly.
"And last but not least, Beta squad."
Earth Breaker was the final pony to come on the stage, looking at the crowd with a bashful smile.
"Beta squad may not have powerful stuff like magic or nature, but they possess the strength that can destroy anything in its' path."
A huge boulder is placed on the stage. It was amazing how the wooden stage could carry such weight. Breaker steadied himself in front of the boulder, try to move his power to his legs. With a strong buck, the boulder collapsed and broke into a million pebbled. Many audience members were in awe at this. Earth Breaker smiled and gave a salute before leaving the stage.
"These three squads are the top of the army. They are like the Wonderbolts, but way more important as it is their job to protect our country from any threat. If you do well enough, you might someday have your own elite squad. That is all."
The Commander gave a salute and walked off the stage, ending the speech.
