The gentle morning sun shone over Canterlot. It was an early hour, much too early for some ponies (mainly a certain cyan
Pegasus) but far too late for some, especially Princess Celestia. Having already risen the sun, she could now relax for the few hours until most ponies would be getting up. She sat on the balcony on the tall tower that housed her chambers. She sipped a cup of sunflower tea held aloft by her magic. Her sister, Princess Luna, sat across her, nibbling at a crescent with chocolate sauce. It was an old tradition between the two sisters. Each ate a breakfast food similar to their talents. Celestia had discontinued the practice upon the rising of Nightmare Moon, but with her beloved sister back and all of Equestria in harmony, or at least most of the time, they had picked it back up.

"I just love mornings like this. When you were gone... I didn't think I'd ever have sunflower tea again, yet here we are!" Celestia chuckled. Luna returned the laugh.

"I too missed these mornings. I personally thought it was the worst part of being trapped in that accursed prison. But all is well." She leaned over the table and muzzled her sister. Celestia returned it affectionally. She placed her cup on the table. "I know it's been 3 years since your return, but it feels like only yesterday since I-I banished you to the moon. I sometimes wake up expecting to have to lower the moon as well as easier the sun, but find it already done." Celestia remarked. She turned her head towards the dark outline of Ponyville, home of her faithful student and now fellow princess Twilight Sparkle. "I wonder if Twilight Sparkle has waken up yet."

"She might have not even slept. I have heard that she is quite the bookworm. Is that not so?" Luna asked.

"She definitely is. Much like me when I was younger."

"If there ever was a time." Luna joked. Celestia gave her a glare. They then both burst into laughter.

Twilight Sparkle was, in fact, very much awake, and was now on the last chapter of Medical Magic: Controversy and History. This was just one of the many books she had read, which were piled in a stack behind her. They included novels that she had already read before, such as Starswirl the Bearded's biography, that she had decided she had wanted to reread, and new novels, such as the newest Daring Do novel, Daring Do and the Ring of Destiny, which featured her friend, the rainbow maned, former bearer of the element of loyalty, Rainbow Professionalism Dash.

Of course, her middle name was not "Professionalism", but many residents of Ponyville, especially the foals, had taken to calling her that, and Twilight had no idea in the slightest where it came from. Twilight shut the book with a satisfied sigh. She stood up and stretched her legs, then her wings. She had gotten used to them, taking flying lessons from multiple ponies. Rainbow Dash was not very good with covering the basics, as she had never really had to learn them, as she had always had wings and exempt flying ability, so she preferred teaching Twilight tricks and flips. Fluttershy, on the other hand, had proven herself to be a very good teacher. Twilight could now achieve a hover and could fly slowly with lots control. But the best teacher Twilight had was Princess Celestia herself. Having always been Twilight's mentor and teacher, it felt very natural for the both of them. Celestia was very encouraging and an excellent teacher.

Twilight had always looked up to Celestia, like everyone else in Equestria, but Twilight had always felt a closer connection to Celestia. Of course, Celestia had been with her most of her life, a great experience very few ponies get, the only ones Twilight knew of were Luna, Prince Blueblood, and herself! Celestia had even been the one to grant her wings, transforming her from a normal unicorn to an alicorn, a species that has lead Equestria for countless generations. Twilight trotted into the bathroom, magically grabbing a brush and smoothing down her mane, even though it looked exactly as it had yesterday. She glanced at her wing feathers. She adjusted each one meticulously, before levitating her toothbrush and toothpaste. She was bringing them to her mouth when her magic stopped flowing and the toothbrush fell to the ground.

"That's peculiar..." Twilight said to herself. "Oh well." She attempted to use her magic again to pick up the things, but nothing happened. Her horn let out a spark but could not achieve the basic spell Twilight had mastered when she was a young filly. "What?!" She ran over to her assistant, who was at the moment curled up on his bed. "Spike! Spike! Wake up!" she prodded him with her hoof. "Wake up!" He rolled over, sleepily swatting her hoof away.

"It's too early." Twilight kept attempting to wake him up.

"SPIKE! GET UP!" she yelled, startling her other assistant, Owlowiscious. "Sorry." Twilight said, directing a sheepish smile in the flustered owl's direction. She turned to Spike, and tried one last time to wake him up. Throughly aggravated, she turned to her last resort. She ripped the blanket of him and prodded him ,with light force, of course, in the stomach with her horn.

"WHAT?!" he yelled. "What is so important that you have to wake me up at- Uh, what time is it?- a very unreasonable hour!?"

"I'm sorry Spike, but this is urgent! My magic isn't working! I don't know what's happening! I need you to write a letter to the Princess, ASAP!" she instructed. "Dear Princess Celestia, I have a most urgent mater to discuss with you concerning my magic. You see, I was using a simple levitation spell, which you surely know I mastered long ago, when my magic stopped. I am extremely concerned and would very much appreciate a quick response. Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle." Twilight finished. Spike rolled up and sealed the scroll. He held it in the air and blew a gust of green fire out of his mouth. Or to more properly describe it, he attempted to. All that came out of his mouth was a tiny spark.

"What happened? I'll try again." Nothing but his breath came out. "What!? What happened to my fire?!"

In Canterlot, Celestia was just about to take a sip of tea when the cup dropped, spilling tea on her usually pristine white coat.

"Oh my! How odd! My magic has never stopped like that... Perhaps I was not quite trying hard enough." she presumed. She tried yet again to pick up her cup, but to no avail. Her eyes widened. She shot her eyes up to her sister. "Luna, lift the cup. Now!" The dark blue alicorn tried to light up her horn, but nothing other than dark blue sparks star came out, fading away quickly.

"Sister, what is happening?" she asked fearfully, not wanting to face the inevitable herself.

"Luna... I think our magic is gone."
