The roar of the crowd hit its peak. A sea of colors bounced in tandem, moving to the beat of the music. This was the moment she lived for, the moment when the crowd was completely lost in her song. A subtle roar came, barely audible over the music. This was what she lived for—to see ponies utterly absorbed in her art, lost in the rhythm.
She placed her hoof on her headphones, pushing the speaker as close as she could to her ear. The evening quickly devolved into a blur of flashing lights and blaring bass—the perfect evening by Vinyl’s standards. And by the time her set ended, she was exhausted. She stood there panting as her last song came to a close, sweat dripping down her face. As the last note faded off into nothing, the room erupted into applause. The air reeked of sweat, and her crowd was sluggish, but she could still feel their energy. She held her hoof out high for a moment, hearing their shouts grow louder. Finally she gave a wave. The thunderous stomps as the crowd cheered for her gave her one last high before she had to get off stage. Another successful show.
Just off stage, a line of ponies—some she knew, some she had never seen before—came to congratulate her. Fatigue from her long show, and even longer day was wearing on the musician though. She gave a smile and a nod as she approached, but barely slowed her pace. She had no intentions of stopping, but her fans swarmed her. Vinyl tried to open her mouth to excuse herself, but she didn’t even get a chance before a flood of congratulations, and praise came her way.
Vinyl wasn’t the type of pony to snub her fans. Aside from it being bad press, she loved talking to them, and hearing their reactions to her set. With a small sigh, she came to a stop.
“Awesome set Vinyl,” a young stallion said sticking out his hoof for a hoof bump. She tapped hers to his, giving a confident smile as she did.
“Thanks.” She tried to hide her fatigue, but it was catching up to her. Behind her shades, her eyes hung heavy. “Ponies have been getting real crazy at my shows lately.”
“Has to be because of your recent success, you're getting pretty big now.”
“Yeah, has to be those vocals you’ve had in your last two CDs! They’re awesome!” a young mare said.
She shrugged her shoulders. “I can’t say that’s what makes the songs.”
“No, your beats have always been good, but that voice really is a good match. That’s not you singing, is it?” another asked.
“Me? Nah, I can’t sing to save my life.” She laughed a bit.
“Then who’s the filly you got singing for you?”
“That’s my little secret.” Vinyl laughed dismissively. The unicorn spent a few more minutes talking to them, and giving a few hoof bumps so they wouldn’t think she was stuck-up. But a quick glance told her it was already past four in the morning. Her whole body tingled with fatigue, and thoughts of her marefriend’s concert earlier that night were starting to feel like they happened days ago. Strategically, she slid forward towards the door. Vinyl didn’t try to hide the fact she was leaving. She shook a few hooves and bid farewell, though a few tried to get her to stay. She declined, giving some reason or another that she couldn’t. Before anyone could protest, she closed the door, and left the club.
Once the door was closed, she felt the brisk cold air hit her fur. A blanket of white covered the ground, and the streets of Canterlot were dead silent. Vinyl looked up at the sky, seeing the moon already leaning towards the horizon. With a small yawn, she started walking home.
She quietly closed the door to her apartment, breathing a small sigh of relief as she did. Looking up at the closed door she pulled off her sunglasses. Dark bags hung heavy under her eyes. Vinyl placed her hoof against the wall, taking a moment to warm up from the chilly winter air. Just thinking about the show tonight brought a smile to her face—the cheering fans, the amazing line-up, how she and the other DJs that night utterly rocked the house—she never wanted it to end. A familiar tingling throughout her body told her it had to though. She couldn’t help fantasizing about snuggling up into bed next to her lover on a cold winter night light this. Vinyl gave a yawn feeling sleep beckoning her. Just looking at her hoof she could see it trembling, straining to even stand against gravity.

A slightly clenched jaw, eyes half closed in contempt, all pointing to her Tavi being “rather cross” as she would put it.
Vinyl looked to the orange light spilling from the living room. A sense of dread crawled up into her as she crept up to the doorway. She looked to the stairs lying just beyond the living room entry. For a brief moment the idea of making a run for the stairs crossed her mind, but she knew it was useless. She resigned herself to her fate—most likely a night of arguing with Octavia—before turning into the living room.
But it wasn’t quite the scene she had expected. Sitting on the couch was indeed her marefriend, but instead of sitting in complete silence, brooding like she usually did before an argument, she had a small smile on her face. The mare’s eyes sat closed, her hoof lazily conducting an invisible orchestra as she listened to some music through a pair of headphones.
“Tavi?” she asked, looking at her marefriend with concern.
The earth pony mare’s eyes opened slowly. “Oh, Vinyl, you’re home early.” She leisurely slipped the headphones off her head, still smiling. Her eyes were half-closed, which usually gave her an air of sophistication, but that wasn‘t the case here. There was something different about the way Octavia was looking at her this evening. “Early? Tavi, it’s past 4:30...”
“Oh, is it? I hadn’t noticed.”
Vinyl took a step towards her, keeping a close eye on Octavia. “You’re acting weird tonight.”
“You’re imagining things,” she said dismissively.
“I don’t think I am...”
“I think you are. I’m not acting strange at all,” Octavia insisted.
Vinyl narrowed her eyes. “Alright, fine, I’ll bite. What did I do?” Vinyl asked with a sigh.
“Feeling guilty?” The cellist laughed.
“You never stay up this late unless I did something wrong.” Vinyl continued to press her for an answer. “Today wasn’t our anniversary was it?”
Octavia rolled her eyes at the question. “That gives me so much hope for our anniversary in a few months...” she said sarcastically.
“Well, I know it isn’t your birthday—that’s in the summer—and it isn’t Hearts and Hooves Day. So, what is it?”
“For the last time, there isn’t any reason. I was just so absorbed in this CD I bought today that I lost track of time.” Octavia held up an empty CD case. “After the concert tonight, I happened to stop by the record store on the way home. I was rather lucky, and found this in the used CD bin.”
“What is it? Some classical stuff?” Vinyl rolled her eyes, already knowing the answer.
“Well, yes. But more specifically it’s a rare recording of the Junior Canterlot Orchestra from around ten years ago.”
Vinyl felt her heart seize for a moment.
“I have been looking for this for ages. You know, there was a talented little filly in the orchestra back then. She was the concertmaster.” Octavia’s eyes remained half closed, that smile she had when Vinyl walked in worked its way back onto her face.
“I wouldn’t know anything about that...” Vinyl looked to the side.
“Oh, right. Well, she was the first chair violin.” Octavia climbed off the couch. “It’s a rather prestigious position, usually given to the best violinist in the orchestra,” she added, walking towards Vinyl. The DJ still refused to look at her marefriend, even as she approached.
“Cool...” Vinyl made no effort to hide her apathy.
“It’s rather embarrassing, but I had a bit of a professional crush on her.” Vinyl’s ears perked up a bit as Octavia spoke. “She was a few years younger than me, so we never had the chance to play together.” Octavia walked past Vinyl, keeping her playful gaze on the unicorn. Her tail brushed Vinyl’s neck as she continued walking across the room. “I had hoped that we would meet at the professional level, but that too never came to pass. She simply vanished from the music scene.”
“That sucks...”
“As I came into my own as a musician, I was never able to forgot the haunting sadness, or the exuberance that young filly was able to invoke with her violin.” Octavia’s voice grew quieter as she walked to the other end of the room. “The wonderfully deep, emotive tones she could pull from the instrument were beyond anything I had ever heard, even from professionals.”
“Too bad, guess you’ll never see her again.” Vinyl took a step towards the couch, but she suddenly felt her marefriend’s hoof on her shoulder holding her back.
“It was rather peculiar, such a talented pony quitting music like that. I did a bit of research, and found out her name was Vivace String, but that was just her stage name.”
“Stage name?” Vinyl whole body tensed as Octavia’s hoof left her shoulder.
“You know about stage names, right, DJ Pon-3?” Octavia’s playfulness was starting to leak into her voice. She almost sounded giddy. That constant smile, those sultry eyes, Vinyl could tell she knew something—she only hoped it wasn’t what she thought it was. “And as it would turn out, her real name was...Vinyl Scratch.” Her tone fell flat as she spoke her marefriend’s name. It was like all the joy was suddenly sucked out of Octavia’s tone and replaced with dry contempt.
Vinyl’s hooves shook in place. Her whole body went stiff. “T-Tavi, I can explain.” She turned around only to see her lover holding a violin case. The anger she was expecting to see wasn’t there.

She looked so meek, so sweet. This wasn’t like the Tavi she knew. This was like she was begging Vinyl rather than asking or demanding that she play.
The unicorn looked to the floor for a moment, thinking of the best way to tell her no. She had spent years trying to put that hellish nightmare that was the Junior Canterlot Orchestra behind her. There was no way she wanted to relive any part of that experience. But when she looked back to Octavia, her initial refusal melted away in an instant. Those pleading eyes were like shots right through her heart. This wasn’t Octavia trying to tease her, nor was this a simple whim—she truly wanted her to play.

The hum of the strings grew more coherent as her confidence in her playing returned. The sound no longer felt timid, but was now filling the air around them with its power. Vinyl couldn’t stop herself from smiling. After all the time she spent away from the violin, she could still make it sing the way she wanted.
The gentle melody hit her like a wave with nostalgia. The echoes of her fillyhood called her back to when she played this every night. She could still hear the applause of the crowed as she took her bow at the end of her concerts, still see the approving looks from her parents, still feel the praise of her fellow musicians—it all rang as clear as it had all those years ago. But with the good came the bad. The demands to be better, the stress from her parents making her practice endlessly, the scorn of jealous fillies and colts around her. Vinyl’s teeth clenched as she felt the anger coming back, but a small sniffle pulled her from her dark memories.

A soft, gentle flow around Octavia—red in hue—illuminated the room through her eyes. It was far stronger than any aura she had seen while player music before. Red, the color of love. Vinyl was left with that thought as she pulled the bow one last time across the violin.
“It’s rather impressive that you can play based on sound alone,” Octavia said as she watched in utter fascination as Vinyl’s song came to a close.
“I’m a bit rusty...” Vinyl said with a bit of a laugh. She lowered the violin gently back into its case with her magic.
“It may not have been perfect, but it was still enjoyable. Thank you, Vinyl.” Octavia wrapped her forelegs around the unicorn for a brief moment, snatching a quick hug from her before stepping back.
“Thanks,” she replied with a sincere smile.
“Perhaps we could play a duet some time.”
“Hey, don’t get too used to this. This was a one time thing, got it.” Vinyl took a step towards her marefriend, flashing a cocky smile as she did so.
“Oh, “a one time thing” you say? Perhaps I might just let this little secret of yours slip to your fans.” The cellist gave a devious smile as she leaned in.
“You wouldn’t dare.” Vinyl inched closer, still boasting that cocky smile. Her eyes now held the same sultry gaze her marefriend had.
“I might, if you don’t bend on your little rule. Let’s say, once a year? For my birthday?”
Vinyl chuckled a bit. “I guess I could do that.” She leaned in, planting her lips on Octavia’s. The mare showed no resistance, letting the DJ invade her mouth. Vinyl nodded her head while rolling her eyes. “You got me all figured out, don’t you.”
Octavia simply nodded her head. “So putting together that Vivace String was a white unicorn, has the same eye color as you, she should be about your age, and her musical style, I made an educated guess.”
“And I thought ponies wouldn’t recognize me because I dyed my mane back then.” Vinyl snickered to herself.
Octavia tried to hold back a laugh herself. “The orchestra can be rather finicky when it comes to things like that. Though now that I have a chance to ask, I am curious to know why you quit?”
“There was some stuff with my parents. Basically they got too uptight when we moved to Canterlot, and I couldn’t take it. So one night after my solo, I just got up, and walked off stage.” Vinyl rolled over onto her back, placing her hooves under her head for support.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I hated how my parents were always pushing me to be better than everypony. Well, that, and all the fillies and colts in my section was super jealous of me. It really sucked all the fun out of music, you know?”
There was a small pause. “I suppose that makes sense. If you don’t love your art it’s hard to want to continue it,” Octavia finally said, placing her foreleg over Vinyl’s chest.
“Yeah, and I love doing what I do now.”
“I know you do. It’s why I admire you so much. You love playing your music, and when you do play, you’re stunning. You have so much energy and passion while you play.” Octavia sounded distant, like she was voicing thoughts rather than speaking to Vinyl. “You’ve been my biggest influence in recent years. When I play, I think about you. You’re my inspiration to create.”
Vinyl sat there silently for a moment. Deep down, she knew she she felt the same. Without Octavia, she wouldn’t be making the music she made now. “I feel the same way...” she muttered softly, just barely audible to her lover.
“Oh, you do? Now that makes me curious. I want to know what got the great Vinyl Scratch so interest in me in the first place.” Octavia gave Vinyl a devilish gaze as she looked up at her lover.
“Really? We were having a moment, and now you want to go down that road?”
Octavia nodded firmly as a reply, still keeping a small smile on her face. “Yes I do. After all, you just came up, and started hitting on me. I’ve had an interest in you for a while—though I wasn’t exactly aware of it until today—and thinking about how we met, and knowing you now, you really aren’t the kind of mare that would hit on a pony like me.”
“Tavi, you really underestimate how beautiful you are.” Vinyl flashed her a confident smile.
“No,” she corrected. “I think you underestimate my standards. If you hadn’t been so persistent, I probably wouldn‘t have given you the time of day.”
“So offering a cute mare like you a cup of coffee at a coffee shop is being persistent?” Vinyl asked innocently.
“No,” she said shaking her head. “But stalking me from my concert that day all the way to the coffee shop is though.”
Vinyl conceded that point with a nod of her head. “True. But don’t tell me you really don’t remember the DJ playing at the club you went to the night before that concert of yours.”
“I do. A no talent pony by the name of...oh, what was it?...DJ Pon-3?” She gave a teasing smile as she leaned in closer to Vinyl.
“So you did know.” She leaned in to Octavia as the cellist leaned closer to her.
“Hard to forget such a flashy pony with such an obnoxious voice trying so hard to hype the crowd.” She placed her lips on her lovers. Their lips met for only a brief moment, but that was all they needed. Slowly they backed away from one another, still smiling, still staring deep into each others eyes.
“Well, if you have to know why...” she said placing a hoof to her chin, pretending to think deeply. “I remember everypony jammin’ out that night except for one. A cute little mare standing at the bar all alone.” Her eyes fell back down to her lover, who feigned innocence. “But you weren’t bored. You had your eyes closed, listening to the music, slowly bobbing your head to the beat.” Vinyl laughed a bit, bringing her hoof to Octavia’s face. She ran it gently along her cheek, staring at her lovingly.
“Well, I can always recognize a beautiful composition, regardless of genre,” Octavia replied, lying her head down on Vinyl’s chest. She wrapped her hoof around Vinyl’s chest, holding her tight.
“Seeing you there, just listening, I knew you were enjoying my music more than anypony else there. Most of them were trying to look cool, or just there to dance, but not you. You were actually enjoying it.” She placed her hoof around Octavia, looking down at her with a content smile. “I still haven’t seen anypony enjoy my music like you.” She brushed her hoof along Octavia’s mane. “I thought I wanted to make music that everypony would enjoy as much as you enjoyed my music that night, but that wasn’t it.”
“What was it then?”
“As time’s gone on, I’ve realized I want to make music for you...” she said softly. “You’re the reason I make music. You’re my muse, Tavi.”
“Vinyl...I’ll happily listen to anything you make, as long as you continue to enjoy making it. But just know that I may be your muse, but you‘re just as much my inspiration.”
Octavia felt Vinyl’s grip tighten around her. “I love you, Tavi.”
“I love you too.” Octavia nuzzled Vinyl’s chest, feeling her fatigue finally winning out after a long night.
Vinyl’s eyes grew heavy, since she was long since past her point of exhaustion. The two of them closed their eyes, ready for sleep to take them. But just as Vinyl was about to finally drift off to her dreams, a sudden loud buzzer pulled her from her rest. Both musicians glanced over at their alarm clock, seeing it was seven in the morning, time for them to get up.
“Do we have anything to do today?” Vinyl asked with a growing irritation.
“I have practice at nine...” Octavia muttered groggily.
Vinyl let out a groan. “And I have to be at my producer’s office at ten...”
“Another sleepless night...” Octavia added with a yawn.
“Yeah, but it was worth it.” Vinyl placed a kiss on Octavia’s forehead.
“I have to agree,” Octavia said with a slight laugh.
