Angel of Solitude

Michael, archangel of heaven, leader of the armies of God, and eldest son of the Lord himself, stood on his balcony overlooking the plains of paradise. The sight was beautiful to say the least. The sun shone with radiance, baking the grass in a warm golden light. The souls of the righteous laughed and celebrated the new dawn without a trouble. Why should they be troubled? Shouldn’t worries be nonexistent in paradise?

Michael, however, wore a look of deep concern. His brown hair hung in thick locks around his shoulders and he wore his eternally shining armor, emblazoned with designs of wings and starbursts. The great wings of the archangel were folded at his back in a relaxed posture. His eyes were plastered with a distant stare, mind in deep thought.

The ranks of Hell swelled with every passing minute. The boundaries separating the two planes of divine existence were mighty still, yet with every fallen soul, the hellfire pushed with greater force against the walls of Limbo, the dividing line between paradise and perdition.

Holy War was on the horizon.

Michael’s scouts had searched far and wide across the multiverse to find a being with the divine power stored within them to combat his fallen younger brother, the infamous Lucifer. All had returned with unfortunate news. Hundreds upon thousands of universes scoured for this holy warrior. The great Dovahkiin of the planet Nirn, Gandalf of Middle Earth, The Chosen Undead of Lordran, Kal El of Krypton, also known as Superman, Thor of Asgard, none of them possessed the raw energy to subdue the Satanic forces and while the time of reckoning was still far away, the archangel was becoming ever aware of heaven’s vulnerabilities.

He heard the massive double doors of his room fly open behind him and turned to see Gabriel, the messenger angel, with an ecstatic smile on his face.

“Brother!” he exclaimed. “We have found the warrior destined to lead our forces! His soul radiates with holy and pure energy!”

Michael, his body suddenly jumpstarted with happiness, rushed to his younger brother, gripping him by the shoulders.

“That’s fantastic news, Gabriel!” Michael exclaimed. “What is his name? Surely he must be a king of some great realm! Is he even human? Please, Gabriel! Enlighten me!”

Gabriel, with a suddenly concerned look, pulled away from Michael, “Actually, brother, he is none of those things. The warrior’s name is Stone Plow. He is a pony residing on the planet of Equis. I know, brother. It seems odd but if you had only seen the way his spirit blazes within his body! It was beautiful! The planet though. It is an anomaly in all aspects of the word.”

“What do you mean, Gabriel?”

“To begin, it follows not the laws of celestial physics set by our father. The orbiting sun and moon are controlled by the reigning political figure of the largest country on the planet, Equestria.”

“That is quite strange.” Inquired Michael, “Does magic exist within this realm?”

“Yes, actually” responded Gabriel, “although its power is derived from the power of friendship and kindness.” Gabriel’s expression suddenly became grim. “Although Michael, we will need to tether a guardian angel to this one. The planet is riddled with creatures of evil such as manticores, hydras, dragons, and even the demonic changelings. We must not let a being with this kind of energy fall to his own mortality.”

Michael turned away, once again deep in thought. “But Gabriel, all of the archangels are guarding the border. Who could we burden with such an important task?”

Gabriel ran a hand through his short blonde hair, racking his mind for an acceptable answer for his brother. Suddenly, his eyes turned up towards Michael with a knowing glimmer.

“There is one, Michael.” Gabriel said with a cryptic air. “He prefers to keep to himself, but he is far older than all of the lower ranking angels. I believe you know the one I speak.”

Michael’s face contorted into a stoic grimace as he responded to his brother in a gruff and concise tone.

“You know we cannot assign him, Gabriel. He was once a mortal for Christ’s sake! I would never trust him with a mission of such importance!”

“What other option do we have ,Micheal? You know we can’t remove any angels from the border. Hell, the demons are already pounding against the walls of Limbo! We don’t have time to argue about this! When Lucifer came to him to coerce him to the forces of the Fallen Angels in the last Great Battle he resisted! That makes him pure in my book!”

Michael let out a deep sigh.

“Fine, but for our own sake, I pray that you do not judge him incorrectly.” Michael said with an exasperated air.

“Thank you, brother.” Gabriel nodded curtly, spread his massive wings and flew off towards the Great Observatory of Heaven, where the chosen angel resided and spent most of his time.

Michael returned to his overlook.

It always has amazed me how much trust Gabriel has put in mortals, thought Micheal, I hope that he is as correct about this one as he was about that Carpenter from Nazareth.

Cassiel, patron angel of Solitude, sat in his observatory peering into the great looking glass. It was his only real friend. That and the millions upon millions of volumes of universal history that lined the walls of heaven’s Great Observatory.

Cassiel rested in a large armchair with his back to the door facing a window overlooking the glowing plains of paradise.

“Brother. The Lord calls on your service.” Said a voice from behind him.

Without saying anything, Cassiel stood and strode over to Gabriel. With a slight turn of his head, Cassiel answered Gabriel.

“What does our father ask of me?”

That was typically more than the patron angel of solitude allowed himself to speak. He was known amongst the angels as being nearly silent and typically isolationist. Cassiel’s social interaction was minimal at best and when he felt particularly chatty, he would communicate with two to five word responses. He fit the picture of solitude quite well.

Cassiel stood at 6 and a half feet, a head and shoulders shorter than the archangel standing in front of him, with a thick shag of unkempt brown hair atop his head. His dark green eyes were cold and analytical, displaying little emotion or empathy.

“You are to be given the most honorable task of protecting the next Heavenly Messiah, destined to aid us in the defeat of Lucifer’s armies!”

Cassiel’s response was a deadpan look accompanied with complete silence. It was his favorite facial expression.

After a brief awkward pause, Gabriel continued.

“He resides on the planet Equis. His name is Stone Plow. He is a pony with a brow pelt and black mane. You will protect him with your life and all aspects of your power until the Lord calls on him to do battle against Hell.”

“A pony?” said Cassiel.

“It is not your place to question, brother. Only to obey.” Replied Gabriel with a slight glare.

Cassiel replied with his usual blank stare.

“Pack your things.” commanded Gabriel, “You leave at sunset.”

Another day in paradise comes to an end. As the sun set in the distance, the archangels and Cassiel crowd around the whirling multiverse portal.

“Are you ready, Cassiel?” asked Michael

“Yes, brother.” responded Cassiel, while continuing to stare at the swirl of purple energy that lay in the cement pool in front of him.

“Do not fail us, Cassiel.” Said Uriel.

Uriel was a tall and imposing figure, standing at seven and a half feet tall with close cropped black hair toping his angular head that seemed to be carved from stone. Uriel was one of the more militant of God’s angels and was described as being as pitiless as any demon. It was unwise to make an enemy of this being.

Cassiel and Uriel were not exactly friends.

“This is an opportunity to redeem yourself from your filthy mortal ancestry.” continued Uriel, “You had best stay in line.”

Cassiel approached the portal, seemingly ignoring the incriminating comments from the tall archangel in front of him. The gravity of the portal tugged at Cassiel’s clothing and the sword at his hip rattled against the inside of the scabbard. As he began to walk into the portal, he was stopped by a hand on his shoulder.

“Oh, and by the way,” spoke Michael, “Do your best not to alert the local inhabitants to your presence. If they discover you, we will not be able to help you for fear of exposing the Holy War to the species on the planet.”

Cassiel nodded, turned and dove through the portal into Oblivion. With a hissing sound that cut through the air, the portal closed.

Silence reigned. The archangels stood in place, heads bowed in contemplation, for many minutes.

Alea iacta est. said Michael within the confines of his thoughts.

We shall see if this Cassiel is worthy of this redemption...

Author's Note

Hey, guys. This is my first shot at writing fan fiction, so please...be gentle (and contstructive).

For the Supernatural fans out there. No, this is not a Supernatural crossover and Cassiel is not a misspelling of Castiel. Cassiel is the angel that Castiel is based off of however and I am using Castiel as a character model for him.

Hope you guys like it!
