The dawn of an indago morning

Blue Lightning’s eyes fluttered open. Her lashes clung together; seemingly bound together by an glue so well made that nothing could dilute it, except for water. Sighing heavily, Blue rolled out of bed, or rather shifted slightly and fell on to the floor. Physics had always been a thorn in her side ever since she was a little filly and she had tried to fly a cloud upside down. Blue Lightning rose from the wooden floor and cantered off to her bathroom. She kicked open the door with her front hoof peered inside, no one seemed to be inside.

Blue stepped inside her bathroom, hooves making clip clop sounds as she went, and stared into her mirror. A foal-blue mare stared back at her. Blue Lighting's pension for perfection began to take hold and she slipped her hoof between the handle of a nearby brush and began to comb the ragged indigo mop that was her mane. When she was younger her mane was a long, flowing river that flowed down her back but as of six months ago she was sick of it flying in her face, so she chopped it off. Now all it did was irritate her at just how unkempt it always looked. Giving up, she set the brush back on the counter and grabbed her tweezers with her teeth and began the process of preening her wings. After all, clean wings were happy wings.

Finally, Blue Lighting finished the chore that was getting herself ready for work. After splashing some water on her face as a good refresher, she slipped on her cluttered saddle bags and headed out the door. Ponyville was a decent sized farm towns, though it could never compare to Manehaten or Canterlot, everywhere Blue looked she could see ponies walking and talking. The various smells of foods and the lovely stench that was the freshly damp dirt baking in the heat. One scent stuck out in particular, the enchanting scent of cider. Blue Lighting yearned to walk down to the train tracks, grab a glass and chug it down like it was water. Sadly flying while intoxicated was against the law in Equestria and Blue couldn't afford another ticket. Reluctantly she turned to the skies and began flapping her wings.

The  Ponyville Weather Office was a short flight away from Blue Lightning's home. The office was a low sturdy building with blue paint covering it (along with varying amounts of graffiti). several other pegasi were also coming into work, though they seemed a bit more enthusiastic about it. Blue slipped inside the Weather Office only to be greeted by her lavender -blue drinking buddy, Cloudkicker.

"Where in Celestia's name were you last night?" She neighed. Her violet eyes were glittering with both anger and wonder.

"I was working overtime to, you know, accomplish something!" Blue screamed back, annoyed at being yelled at before she had a cup of coffee.

"So, you worked extra hours at a job you can't stand," Cloudkicker started.

"Oh great, here we go,"

"-- miss one of your best friends birthday, making me look like an idiot, and your not going to apologize!" Cloudkicker screamed.

"So Blossomforth didn't mount you last night. Don't take your frustrations out on me," Blue Lightning chided, giving Cloudkicker a wink on the word "frustrations".

"Ugh, Blue sometimes I just want to clock you upside the head," Cloudkicker sighed and followed her buddy as they walked into the office.

Inside they found themselves hoof to hoof with the boss, Rainbow Dash. She had an expression of what looked like anxious concern.

"Come into my office," Rainbow said flatly." both of you."

The two mares followed Rainbow Dash into her office. Inside was a small room with dark brown walls, maroon carpeting and what appeared to be a bookshelf full of adventure novels. In the opposite corner of the bookshelf hung Rainbow's flight suit and pinned to said flight suit was her Lead Pony Medallion. The rainbow-coloured mare sat behind her desk glared at her underlings with hopeful annoyance.

"You remember Lightning Dust right?" Rainbow began. Blue was about to answer when Rainbow began to talk again. " She and I have made headway on patching up our .. . friendship."

Blue knew it was much more than a friendship.  Rainbow Dash had once told her that she had wanted to ride that mare like a cart. Whether there "friendship" was anything more than one night stable fight to Dashie, Blue didn't know. though judging by Rainbow's stories of the Academy it was mostly one-sided.

"Well she is coming down for a few weeks and I can't meet her right when she gets here. So I want you two to pick her up and take her to the Inn. Show her around and what not, that's all" Relief washed over Blue Lightning at Rainbow's words.

"And your telling us to do it because. . . " Blue Lightning asked, rolling her hoof as she did so.

"Because," Rainbow spoke through gritted teeth "We have a huge thunderstorm planned for tomorrow morning. Remember, you worked late yesterday to help me prepare for it!" Rainbow snapped. Blue glanced over at the mare beside her and nickered. Cloudkicker blushed.

"But what about work?" Cloudkicker shouted recovering from the slight embarrassment.

"Oh, I'm not going to dock your pay for this," Rainbow reassured. "Think of it as just field work," Cloudkicker relaxed a little, though a little unhappy  about missing work.

"We're more than happy to help," Blue replied. She was all to happy to miss work in favor of hanging out with somepony other than a filing cabinet and get paid for it!

"Excellent, you'll find her in the town square. Now hurry up now. I don't want to here Dust complain about a bad reception" With that Rainbow quite literally kicked them out of her office.

Pulling herself off the ground Cloudkicker looked at Blue "Was it me, or was Rainbow Dash a bit more of a hard flank than normal?"

"Who cares!" Came Blue's response. "Come on now we got a mare to meet. To the Square." Blue trotted to the door humming a tune that sounded suspiciously like Daring Doo's theme song.

"Dear Celestia this is going to be a long week," Cloudkicker muttered as she trotted after Blue.
