Dashfang walked into the medicine cat clearing, and she saw Spitfire with her son. “How could you?” he asked.

Spitfire shushed him. “Quiet!” she growled, and she took something out. “Please eat these.” She gave him the berries one by one, and Dashfang saw them, and remembered them.

She remembered the night lock! It was dark as night, and she heard Bloodface doing something. She saw him twitch, and eh growled. What was happening? Is this what it looked like when a cat died of night lock?

Dashfang was terrified so she left the den. She knew he was now dead, and she heard whining from the den.

Dashfang saw the moon high in the sky, and she frowned. Where was Sunstar? She looked around, and she went to the warriors den. She curled up into a tight ball, and slept. She heard the calling from Sunstar, and jumped up. Then she noticed the sun was beating down on her.

Susntar was on Castle Rock, her eyes dark, and her legs shaky.  “The new deputy is Dashfang!” she called, and she didn’t even do the ceremony before she left.

The cats gasped, and Daringtail spoke up. “A kitty-pet?” she asked. Dashfang shot a glance, at her, and she silenced. Something happened without Dashfang knowing, but the cats did.

The tips of her ears turned white. She was becoming the deputy of LightningClan. Did this mean she would have to change?

Browniepaw limped over to her, and whispered into her ear. “Your ears are white!” she yowled softly.

Dashfang looked in a little puddle, and Browniepaw was right! What did this mean? Was it just because she was deputy? She heard a rustling in the leaves, and the LakeClan cats were back.

“Where’s Sunstar?” asked Ravenfur.

“In her den,” meowed Dashfang, and Ravenfur looked at her ears.

She nodded, and smiled. Dashfang noticed that ever since Ravenfur became deputy, her ears turned from black to a creamy white. Is this normal for deputies? It didn’t happen to Sparkleheart or Setclaw. She shrugged, and she went to the leader’s den

“We are here to take the kits,” growled Ravenfur. “Applefur is dead; therefore, the living father will take them back to LakeClan!”

Susntar growled. “We will have war before we give up these kits!” she growled, and Ravenfur nodded.

Then Copperpelt jumped out. “No!” he yowled, and he looked at Sunstar. “I belong there anyway; I will take the kits there before there is a war.

Sunstar nodded, and she looked away.

Dashfang looked into the nursery, and she saw that Pinkiefur was heart-broken. Copperpelt took them away, and Dashfang followed him to the LakeClan border.

They reached the lake, and Dashfang started to whine. “Please,” she said. “You’re the only cat left that reminds me of Applefur.”

Copperpelt smiled, and licked Dashfang’s ear. “You were the only can that I could believe was Applefur, but you’re not. I’m sorry Dashfang, I’m leaving.”

He swam across the river, the kits in his jaws. Dashfang just watched and all she saw was Applefur crossing the river alone. She was alone now. She was deputy now. Now she had to take action.
