The six heroes awoke in their new home within the basement of the Golden Oaks library, six beds filling the otherwise empty storage room. In the corners of the room were sets of what appeared to be scientific machinery though they were covered in dust and rarely used. The first few days were rough before they could purchase the six beds and Riclain built the chests they would use for their storage needs. They were more or less stuck with what they were wearing when they arrived in this new world. As it stood Devon was using his former profession as a tailor to assist Rarity at Carousel Boutique, Malenon was assisting Twilight with research as well as learning about the magic in this world, Zane would assist Applejack at the farm given his strength, Thoroar would go and tend to the animals with Fluttershy with his talents as a druid, Riclain would cut lumber for the store sofas and quills as well as hunt any of the beasts from the Everfree that grew daring enough to go beyond the tree line (which was a rare occurance and the few that did were weak enough to handle alone), and Halfdan worked at the spa primarily through massage and some other techniques he had learned while learning with the Heshin Monks.
Despite the fact they had only just arrived in this universe the populace grew used to them quickly thanks to the words of Twilight and the other Elements of Harmony. Apparently each of the ponies they had first met were not only the six wielders of a magic much akin to their own, but they were also well noted members of the community. It also certainly didn't hurt that Pinke held a surprise welcome to Ponyville party as soon as they had gotten out of the hospital. With everything that had happened their previous gloom of never seeing their homes again seemed to almost completely disappear from the group, almost at least. They would often find their thoughts wandering back to what they had left behind, how their world was faring with the Black Mage destroyed. They knew things would be better but also that things would take much time and effort to return to normal given the devastation that was caused. They each still kept scars over from their home, both physical and emotional. The calm of Ponyville helped ease their burdens as they went about assisting those in need and working until the Princesses could find a way for them to go home.
Once they had donned their few possessions and were ready for the day they went upstairs to see Twilight and Spike in the main area of the library, watching as they seemed to be practicing magic as usual.
"Oh come on Twilight, you can do it!"
"Ok, here goes.."
Twilight's horn glowed with her aura before a quick spark flickered in front of Spike's face, quickly blinking out of existence as a rather well groomed mustache took it's place. Needless to say the six heroes were all impressed save for Malenon, who simply smiled proudly seeing Twilight progressing in her studies. Growing magic was a simple matter and he had helped Twilight understand it further, particularly using arcane magic to coax the cells to duplicate at a faster rate. Still, it was a more meager display than he would have liked, thinking it would be better suited to regrowing flesh on someone who had been injured rather than growing some facial hair.
"Yes! You did it!"
The young dragon quickly made a check on a nearby whiteboard, turning back to Twilight.
"Growing magic, that's 25 different tricks and counting."
The young unicorn gave a light blush, happy at her own progress.
"And I'll say this is the best one yet."
The purple baby dragon started saying different pickup lines he'd use for Rarity, Spike still trying to melt the mare's heart before being expertly dashed by Twilight who removed the facial hair as quickly as she had given it. Soon enough Malenon spoke up.
"Very good work Miss Twilight. Seems you used my theory on controlled cell growth to help get a better grasp of the magic."
Twilight whipped her head about, having been too focused on the test to hear the six men come up.
"Oh, hello guys! Yes, your lesson really helped get a better feel for the spell. It was a lot easier when you encourage cell repair rather than forcing cell growth outright."
The men smiled and nodded. "Glad to hear it Twilight. Though I am surprised there aren't more ponies in this world that have your kind of talent with magic."
As soon as the thought was finished they heard a loud hustle outside, opening the door enough to see two young colts running with abandon.
"GAINWAAAAAAY!!!"
The tan and blue unicorns dashed past the library, heading toward town square where the eight could see the edge of what appeared to be a stage. Riclain stepped just outside and let Bloodtalon float down to his extended arm for her to land, turning to Twilight.
"Was there a show or something scheduled for today? I don't think that the Mayor announced anything."
The purple unicorn shook her head, just as perplex as everyone else.
"Not that I know of. It's strange that something like this came along without being known ahead of time."
Devon grew a devious smirk and walked to the door. "Well then, best not miss the show then eh? Something exciting might occur for all we know."
The six other heroes nodded in agreement and followed suit, coming up to the wagon/stage as they heard a booming voice coming over the crowd.
"Come one, Come all! Come and Witness the amazing magic of the GREAT and POWERFUL TRIXIE!!"
As the voice bellowed over the crowd the wagon unfolded into the full stage, fanfare and several props springing up from the top of the wagon. As the voice subsided a cloud of smoke flashed onto the stage to reveal a light blue unicorn mare with a smug smile already adorning her face. While the crowd radiated with oohs and ahhs as the props seemed to light up and spin on the stage, the six heroes were unamused. Malenon in particular did not care for the supposed mage.
"Pfft! Just some smoke and mirrors. Maybe a few fireworks at the most."
Soon enough a familiar voice came from beside the mage, the white unicorn looking on as unimpressed as the few there with a mind.
"My my my, what boasting!"
Spike was about to start pointing out Twilight's superior magic when he realized it was Rarity, the object of his utmost desire.
'Keep it cool Spike, just keep it cool.'
The young dragon's thoughts harshly contrasted to his actions however.
"Uh, uh Twi-Twi-Oh um, Hey Rarity, I uh- MOUSTACHE!"
Without another word nor making any sense to either of the unicorns, Spike ran off back to the library. Needless to say Rarity was confused as can be. Fortunately, Twilight stepped forward to hopefully dispel the awkwardness.
"There's nothing wrong with being talented right?"
Applejack emerged by the group and got in on the conversation, the different elements seeming to come out of the woodwork.
"Well sure, so long as they aren't showin it off like a school filly with new ribbons!"
Malenon in turn took the moment to speak his own opinion. "Because one has the ability does not give them the right to view themselves above others without putting that skill to proper use. That is the mark of one who would misuse their power for their own vanity rather than do the right thing."
Devon waved a hand dismissively. "Meh, some lights and smoke, whoopdy-fucking-doo."
The magician turned to them and scowled. "Well well well, seems we have some neigh sayers in the audience. Who is so IGNORANT as to challenge the magical power of the Great and POWERFUL TRIXIE!"
Devon stepped forward and smirked. "First off, did you really just neigh at us? Really? Second, what makes you so freakin' special eh? What went ahead and shoved a stick right up y-"
The foul mouthed rogue was yanked off by Malenon, giving him a look to show this was his field of expertise. However, the mare had gotten enough of the message to become rather cross.
"How DARE you insult the Great and Powerful Trixie! The one unicorn who had the magical power to vanquish the dreaded Ursa Major!"
The six heroes looked at the unicorn and nearly face palmed on the spot. Granted they hadn't been around the universe here long, but god damn Ursas were one of the first creatures every adventurer comes across other than the usual rats, spiders, and wolves. The group had killed hundreds of them, each. Granted they didn't know about the ones here but they figured it was just as easy as back home. Their doubt in the unicorn grew even more as the way she chose to depict the battle was not some great illusion to show them how the battle occurred, but some dinky little lights which were nothing more than basic shapes and colors.
"Says the mare who can't even conjure up a decent-"
The displaced Archmage was interrupted by Snips and Snails, who he was seriously considering turning into actual snails at that point.
"That settles it, Trixie IS the most magical pony in Ponyville."
The mage snapped his fingers and shut the mouths of the two hyperactive colts, glaring daggers at the blue unicorn.
"All you've proven is that you can make a basic light show. We have no proof that you did anything of the sort save your little story. You couldn't even create a decent illusion for your little tale! Just some cheap lights even a bumbling apprentice could conjure."
Trixie smirked slyly and nodded. "Well then, I give you this challenge. Anything YOU can do, I can do better!"
Malenon was about to put the unicorn in her place when the thud of an arrow was heard through the square, eyes turning to the ranger who had his bow ready and had another arrow already knocked and ready. The first arrow had embedded itself into a beam that was set in place over the stage, the second arrow soon splitting the first one right down the middle in front of the other ponies. An uproar started though the ranger had not even finished. Drawing out a third and final arrow he fired and split the second arrow in two just as he did the first. There was no doubt his accuracy was from skill and not luck. The applause could be felt by the ponies in attendance. However, Trixie would not be so easily topped.
"So you can shoot your little bow. How about this!"
The remaining arrows in the ranger's quiver floated up and were flying about of their own free will, soon spinning about Riclain before firing at his feet. With deft movements he dodged the arrows, however that was what Trixie desired. Using his own arrows he was being made to dance to avoid being shot, breathing heavily by the time the last arrow was in the ground. He and Devon were beginning to consider attacking the unicorn when a certain rainbow maned pegasus flew onto the stage.
"You don't get to show off like that. Thats MY job!" Without another word the rainbow pegasus speedily spun around the wind mill, and shot into the sky, shooting through three clouds and into the sun before coming back down through the clouds and the loop of the windmill and stopping on stage. Moisture from the clouds were caught in Dash's tailwind and hit her backside, scattering into a light mist and catching the light of the sun into a brilliant miniature rainbow behind her.
Trixie gave Dash an unimpressed look. "The only thing they'll call you, is loser." Her horn glowed and seemed to possess the rainbow that Dash had created, spinning wildly around her and even lifting her off the ground. The rainbow colored twister spun about and moved wildly before depositing RB head first on the ground. The pegasus thought she might hurl as the audience laughed. "Seems anypony with a dash of sense would think twice before challenging the Great and Powerful Trixie."
A thunderclap formed magically behind Dash and was about to strike her plot before it was countered with another bolt, coming from the hand of an enraged wizard. "I have no problem with you putting on your little show here in town, I don't even mind that you boast power, I may even forgive you for humiliating these ponies, but to abuse what little power you have and considering yourself a master mage.." Malenon's aura seemed to radiate pure fury, the mage practically glowing red. "IS UNFORGIVABLE! You squander magic on the most asinine of purposes! So what if you claim to have power?! All you have shown me is that you view your peers as nothing more than pawns! I challenge you to a duel! Tonight at 8 o'clock in the town square! We shall see then if you have any power to speak of." Trixie simply laughed and smiled confidently. "Oh, I'm sure the Great and Powerful Trixie will make a believer out of you yet Mr. Mage." The crowd soon dispersed save the Mane 6 and the heroes, the 5 humans looking worried to their sixth. The druid spoke first.
"Is this wise Malenon? You have been undefeated since you graduated from the Academy. Is it truly worthwhile to fight that weakling?" The mage nodded. "Someone needs to put that wench in her place. I can tell she has been spouting her lies for so long she has begun to believe them herself. For now I shall prepare for our confrontation."
While the Mane 6 thought it just to be a normal magic duel the other five heroes looked more grim, knowing the mare might well get hurt or worse. Sadly, two young colts had other things on their mind. That night they would sneak out and head into the Everfree Forest.
House of Twilight Sparkle, 1 hour before the duel.
Malenon had gone early to prepare the area that the duel was to occur in, knowing he had to set the wards to protect any onlookers from stray spells. Sadly Twilight had yet to know the severity of what was about to happen. She was there with the druid Thoroar sipping tea to help calm their nerves. "I just really hope this doesn't go too far. I don't wan't anyone to harm themselves trying to over reach for a spell, even a pony like Trixie." The druid scoffed and shook his head. "I doubt that will come to pass. More likely she'll faint when her shield spells fail."
Twilight looked curiously at the druid, not sure what he meant. "Shields? Are we going to be attacked or something? Why would Trixie need a shield spell?"
Thoroar shook his head and showed greater concern. "Are you not familiar with a magic duel miss Sparkle?"
The purple unicorn nodded. "Yes, it is a display of magical prowess where the wizards demonstrate their skill by casting more and more intricate and complex spells."
The druid was now chuckling a bit, trying to hide his concern for the unicorn though he was also glad there was no chance his comrade would be injured. "Ah! So things are different here eh? In our world a magic duel was announced when a mage impugned another's honor or offended him in some way. The two would battle until one side stopped fighting, is no longer able to continue, or is killed." Silence seemed to echo in the treehouse as the last word was uttered, realization coming to Twilight before she turned to the druid.
"WHY THE BUCK DIDN'T YOU SAY ANYTHING?!?" Despite the loud shout right in his ear he continued sipping the tea as if nothing happened. "Malenon may be angry, but he is not a fool. He would not kill another pony unless he is threatened. At most the mare might receive a good thrashing."
Twilight's concern showed much more, getting her saddle bags and heading out the door.
"I don't know. I just hope he doesn't go too far."
Everfree Forest, 5 minutes before the start of the duel.
Snips and Snails carefully made their way through the caves they had discovered, knowing there had to be an Ursa Major somewhere in the Forest. The dull witted brown unicorn showed signs of anxiety, turning to his compatriot.
"Uhh Snips, are you sure this is a good idea?"
Snips, using that same infallible logic that had convinced him bringing his pet rock to school would be the best show and tell ever, looked to his friend with a confident smile.
"Oh don't worry! We'll get the Ursa to chase us, lead it into town during the duel, let Trixie defeat it, and no one will ever doubt her awesome magic again!"
"But uhh, what about that weird looking fella? The tall thing with the robe?"
"That new mage? I doubt he'll even be able to cast a basic shield, much less defeat an Ursa Major. I just hope we find it soon."
As if going to prove karma's existence in the world, the two colts heard a loud rumbling growl from behind them, turning about to see what they had come searching for. 'Me and my dumb mouth.'
Town Square, 1 minute before the duel
Malenon had finished casting his wards, marking the ground with a shimmering aura where it would be safe for onlookers to stand from. Both he and Trixie were in the bubble like shield, one poised and ready to kill while the other seemed to laze about confident in herself. The five other heroes were in full armor and had their weapons on hand, knowing they might have to pull Malenon out of he started to go too far. Thoroar was closer in the middle of the warded area, on the sidelines ready to intercede and heal a wounded unicorn should it be needed.
The Mane 6 were also present, 5 of which were ready to see Trixie get showed up while the last only worried about what would happen. She was already learning about the magic from the other world and how destructive it could be. Combine that with the fact Malenon is a skilled practitioner and one could almost feel sorry for the unsuspecting mare. She had tried to warn Trixie but she refused to even listen, already so assured of her own victory that she was more concerned with putting on a good show than anything else. Thoroar soon began to countdown to the start of the duel.
"This duel shall begin in three.."
Malenon's hands began to glow with arcane power, filling his body in preparation for the first blow. Trixie on the other hand simply stood there, waiting to get started with a simple spell.
"Two."
The energy in Malenon began to circle up his arms as the spell was building to it's apex, rings of violet energy building and growing brighter. Trixie's horn was glowing in preparation for a simple illusion spell, aiming to summon up some fireworks to start the show. Little did she know, Malenon was preparing fireworks of his own.
"One!"
Malenon immediately released the chained magic missiles at Trixie who barely had enough time to raise a shield, cracking under the force of the first two projectiles and getting hit by the third. As she recovered she saw what looked like ethereal armor covering Malenon, seeming almost as if a spiritual warrior was standing in the wizard's place. The eyes of the heroes went wide as they knew what was happening, Zane being the first to dare speak what was on their minds.
"Is that- Tenser's Transformation?! Is that fool really going all out here?!"
Devon simply smirked and rubbed his chin. "I honestly wouldn't mind. He needs to make a point to that stuck up bitch. I say let him do what he wants."
Riclain nodded in agreement, remembering how she had used his own arrows to make a fool out of him. Zane simply shook his head.
"This is still going too far. He knows these unicorns aren't that strong. He could kill her."
This is what finally snapped Trixie out of her bravado. "Wait, WHAT?!"
Malenon's temper showed as he finally spoke. "YOU are the one who accepted my challenge. Are you truly so frightened that you cannot even cast a spell? FIGHT!"
Another volley of magic missiles flew from his grip, Trixie barely rolling out of the way. She knew her shield was barely enough to stop it before already. This only elicited laughter from the mage.
"Is that all you can do?! Is that the extent of that so-called 'power'? You were a fool to go against me!"
"Just what do you want from the Great and Power-"
"SHUT IT! Just admit you're a fraud! Admit you are nothing but a scared little mare with a few party tricks! Apologize to those you wronged and to those who believed in your falsehoods!"
"The Great and Powerful Trixie refuses to say such lies! I will not submit to you, who does not even know the procedures for a magic duel!"
Malenon simply smirked and shook his head. "On the contrary, your duels are not the only form out there. In my land, the two wizards fight to show who is the better in combat. The keyword there, for your information, is COMBAT. I would have figured you'd know about that, considering your tale of the Ursa Major!"
As if on cue, two young stallions ran through the crowd, screaming at the top of their lungs. They were quickly shouted to by Devon.
"Hey squirts, whats the rush?"
Snips and Snails didn't even slow down as they passed.
"Can't talk right now."
"Got a MAJOR problem."
"Uh, Ursa Major to be exact."
Devon didn't look too surprised, facepalming as the others looked at the two wide eyed. "Ah, the stupidity of youth."
A roar echoed behind the crowd, the great blue creature towering over the small town.
The heroes all looked back and saw the beast coming, Malenon giving a smirk to Trixie. He was surprised at the difference between the ursas of his world and their own, being corporeal in nature where he originated. "Well then Trixie, here's your chance to prove me wrong. Slay the creature and save the town. If you cant though, I suppose me and my comrades will have to clean up after you."
Trixie was paralysed with fear, Thoroar stepping in and dispelling the wards. "I'd say this duel is canceled for now in light of the threat. I'd suggest you head home little mare. This fight will be too much for you."
Snips and Snails were sadly too quick for Trixie to make a hasty retreat from the soon to be battlefield.
"No way! Trixie can take that thing down no prob! Right Trixie?"
Trixie gulped and nodded. "R-right. I'll handle this." As she hesitantly stepped forward Devon and Malenon smirked, the wizard turning to his comrade.
"10 gold says she runs after the first try."
"You're on!"
As they were starting to place bets Trixie began to enchant the rope and control it, looping itself around the thick appendages. And by thick appendages, I am referring to two of the Ursa's fingers, which snapped the rope with ease. The two colt spectators were less than amused.
"Come on Trixie!"
"Stop goofing off and vanquish it!"
Trixie gulped and began to focus her magic, the clouds swirling above to form a less than impressive thunder cloud over head. It failed to even release a single bolt.
"Well, that was a dud.."
Behind the two young colts was a laugh from Devon.
"Hah! More than one try! Pay up Mal."
The mage grudgingly handed over ten gold coins, the rouge pocketing the coin before turning to Trixie. "Since magic doesn't seem to be your forte, you may want to consider comedy. Considering you don't get eaten by that Ursa that is."
A loud roar from the massive beast was enough to make the three ponies run away, Devon kicking himself up off of the railing he had been sitting on with a smirk. "Well then, time for us to get to work."
Boss Battle- Ursa Major
The six heroes all scattered, Zane charging forward and slamming his shield into the Ursa's muzzle and following with a series of swift sword strikes. The Ursa roared at the blows and swiped a huge claw at the warrior, soon stopped by a series of strong vines that sprouted from the ground thanks to Thoroar's chanting. More vines came up from the ground, giving Devon and Halfdan the proper footing to get behind the Ursa, the monk drawing the twin short blades and shifting his focus to slay his enemy. Negative energy flowed into his blades as he struck in time with Devon, aiming for the spine of the beast and were greeted by the cries of pain from the beast. Riclain was drawing back heavily on his bow, currents of wind spinning around the arrow to give it strength and speed before releasing it into the beast's side to find it go straight through from the force and almost killing the beast. Almost. However, the creature was unlike what they have encountered before, the starlight that comprised it's body reforming as it swiped the heroes away. Malenon focused all of his energy to create mystical chains to hold it down, the vines snapping all around it. The strain on Malenon's face was visible as he had a hard time maintaining the strong bonds on the beast. It was then that something unexpected happened. Twilight stepped next to Malenon and looked right at him.
"Release the chains on my signal, I think I can calm him down and get him out of here."
The mage looked to Twilight, sheer worry on his face. "Twilight get out of here! It's too dangerous. Leave the Ursa to us!"
"No! I wont abandon my friends! Not here, not now that they need me the most!"
Malenon looked to Twilight in surprise, relenting with a smirk.
"You ponies seem to keep surprising me. One moment we're intruders in your land and now we are allies in battle. Alright, do what you have to. Just be quick, I'm not sure how long I can hold it down."
Twilight began to focus magic into her horn, the wind picking up and blowing through the reeds of the pond to create a gentle harmony that echoed gently through the town. As soon as the light melody reached it's ears the Ursa's struggles seemed to ease, gently relaxing onto the ground. With the struggle against the chains subsided he could divert some attention to Twilight to see what she was doing just in time to see her snap the water tower off from it's supports and dump out their reserve. He watched silently as it floated through the barn and was filled with fresh milk. Malenon could hear the groans from Twilight as she was now straining herself, the mage releasing the chains on the dazed Ursa and going to the struggling unicorn.
"Twilight, you need to relax your mind, focus on using the energy around you and not just your reserves inside. Let the world aid you."
Twilight's struggles seemed to ease for a moment before they sensed the Ursa falling over, about to fall on Zane and the others before it was caught by Twilight's aura. It was gently lifted up and given the water tower filled with milk, handling it like and infant would with their bottle before it was gently levitated back into it's cave. As soon as her work was done she released the magic and slumped down, Malenon grabbing her as she fell and helping her stand, seeing how exhausted she was after using that much energy. "You did very well Twilight. It seems I shouldn't underestimate ponies after this. Your people can be surprisingly resilient, some more than others."
Everyone turned their attention to a very nervous Trixie getting barraged with questions from Snips and Snails, all along the same meaning.
"Why didn't you slay the Ursa Major?!"
Trixie finally broke down under the strain, even dropping the act of reffering to herself in a third person.
"I lied! I never slayed an Ursa Major ok?! I just made it up to help my reputation, to impress the crowd! I've been telling that lie for so long that I forgot it was just that: a lie. No one has ever defeated an Ursa Major. Even with what you two did you only subdued it. While still an incredible achievement, they are physically impossible to kill. They are solid starlight. Hardly any flesh or bone to kill. You were right mage, I am just a pretender."
Twilight recovered enough to add in her own two bits. "That was just an Ursa Minor."
The crowd remained quiet for several long moments before they could even react with a collective "WHAT?!"
Twilight raised a hoof to try and calm everyone down. "It's true! After Trixie mentioned them I thought to do a little research. An Ursa Major is far larger and looks almost completely different from the Ursa we saw. That one was just a little baby."
Spike shook his head in disbelief, Devon cutting in. "Wait, if that was just an Ursa Minor, what does an Ursa Major look like?"
Twilight shivered visibly as she recalled the illustration of the Ursa Major in the book. "You don't want to know."
Trixie simply cried out harder. "This only makes it even more clear how much of a fake I am. I couldn't even tell the difference between an Ursa Major and an Ursa Minor! I- I should just go before I cause you any more trouble."
She turned to leave, hanging her head in shame.
"True, you were deceitful and you hurt others. However.."
Trixie turned in surprise to see Malenon entrust Twilight to her friends, stepping forward and kneeling down to eye level with her.
"The fact that you recognize this means you can change for the better. You can grow stronger and use magic for the right reasons, not for the sake of boasting or money but to aid others. A mage's true purpose is that of a teacher and of a leader. They must teach others to help them gain the wisdom to live better lives and lead them through hard times when things look most hopeless. While Equestria may be at peace, there are those who still need help from those with magic. If you wish to recognize you were wrong before then I give you this challenge. Travel through Equestria, help ponies through your travels, and learn to be strong for those who cannot be. Not just by becoming a more powerful mage, but by becoming a better person, or rather pony in this case. I believe you can accomplish this task."
Trixie's eyes began to water, still unable to believe what she was hearing. The very creature that seemed ready to kill her before was now encouraging her to become a better pony and mage. "B- but I don't understand. Before you were-"
"I figured you'd be surprised by this. My actions before were to break away the mask with which you hid your true self, the mask you had created from your bravado and lies. To break it I needed to disprove the strength you had boasted about for much of your life. Once the mask was shattered, you could show your true self and expose it to others. Since you no longer need that old name, how about we hear your name, your real name."
Trixie seemed surprised and confused by a bit of what Malenon said, but shook her head a bit to clear it before nodding.
"Beatrix Lulamoon."
Malenon gave Beatrix a warm smile, showing his approval of that small step forward. "Well Miss Lulamoon, it is a pleasure to finally meet the real you. Given all of this I suppose you'll be starting your journey then?"
"Uhh, I hate ta break it to you sugarcube." Applejack stepped forward, her grin at seeing Beatrix humiliated now gone seeing how Malenon could forgive the mare for her actions.
"I don't think yer wagon will be going anywhere anytime soon."
As Applejack pointed to the battlefield they would see a good number of the homes were damaged and Beatrix's wagon was smashed to bits, barely enough to salvage for another one.
"My- my HOME! What am I going to do?"
Malenon pondered a moment, weighing his options before turning to the distraught mare.
"You know... Ponyville will need help repairing what was damaged. I'm sure an extra helping horn would be appreciated. It would make a nice first step on your journey wouldn't it?"
Beatrix looked to Malenon, a warm smile on her face. Even though he was rough on her she could tell he sought to help her become better. "I think I'd like that."
Ponyville Library, the following Morning.
The town had continued on like nothing happened, a good many were still praising Twilight for how she handled the Ursa Minor. Malenon was out with Beatrix in the main square, helping to repair the damage done to the buildings in town with their magic and even started rebuilding Beatrix's wagon. All throughout their time together Malenon continued answering questions and giving advice to Beatrix, watching her magic improve once she had picked up on techniques to help channel magic more efficiently. It seemed that everyone else had accepted the mare had changed and were working with her to continue the rebuilding. Inside the Golden Oaks Library though, there was a student writing a report for her mentor.
Dear Princess Celestia,
Today I learned three important lessons about friendship. First being that there are times when you need to be hard on somepony to help them understand their mistakes in order to help them grow and be better. The second being that I should never be afraid of being who I am. After seeing Beatrix showing off and how my friends hated her I was afraid that using my own talents to surpass her would make everypony hate me two. But my friends showed me that it is OK to be proud of your talents and that there are times where it is appropriate to show them off, especially when you are standing up for your friends. And finally, that friends can be found in all kinds of people, no matter what species they are, their origins, or even if they came from another world. Friendship is the same wherever you may go, and there will always be someone who you can find as a friend.
Your Faithful Student

Prologue: Once More into The Breach!
So you wish to hear another story eh? One where the very fate of Equestria hangs in the balance?
If not, too bad. I'm telling it anyway!
Years ago, six strange beings entered our world from another, telling of old battles won and lost as they wielded their world's last great hope: The Tools of Heroism. These six ancient rings unleashed the full potential of their wearers, augmenting their own talets to greater heights. Devon the merciful rouge could use the ring of empathy to blend into the shadows themselves, becoming nigh invisible to all but the most keen eye. Zane the stalwart fighter used his ring of integrity to bolster his already impressive defense, shrugging off all but the mightiest of blows. The wise mage Malenon uses his ring of wisdom to find the magical weakness of his enemies and attune his powers to exploit them. The cautious druid Thoroar used his ring of compassion to attune his spirit to the ebb and flow of the world, channeling his energy strongly from the spirits of nature themselves to defend it. The resilient monk Halfdan used his ring of spirit to broaden his own spiritual enlightenment, allowing himself to learn both the paths of light and shadow to aid his comrades. The tempest ranger Riclain Arborshade's ring of devotion allowed him to imbue the very wind into his body, his blades becoming a storm of flashing steel and his arrows ever precise.
Their homes and people had been decimated by the Black Mage and his enslaved Dracolich. Little remained of the armies that made up the defense of their world, forced into a desperate move. One last attempt to end this struggle once and for all. The main bulk of the army marched upon the gate of the Black Mage's fortress, aiming to buy time for a small group to infiltrate the castle and eliminate the Mage once and for all. This is their story This is how they came to our world...
The six heroes crept along through the caverns beneath the castle, having navigated a way into the fortress due to the simplest of places, a storm drain in the side of the mountain to prevent the walls from flooding.
In the forefront stood a dashing rogue, adorned in well maintained leather armor the color of midnight and twin daggers at his side like gleaming moonlight. His face and build were lean, showing no visible fat or excess gear ganging from his belt. His deep brown eyes were peeled for any traps that could be still active in the dank caverns. He took small pride in his well trimmed stubble, believing it added to his charm. A torch in hand illuminated the rest of the group behind.
First was a sturdy fighter, covered in heavy steel plate armor with a sword in hand. His large shield was slung onto his back, his sword drawn and ready for any possible patrols. His countenance was serious and determined, his face showing scars from battles past despite the gleaming blue of his eyes. His head had a modest crew cut, previously a commander for mercenaries that fought the Black Mage.
Behind the warrior was an inquisitive mage, his ears pointed and his face even more graceful than the rogue's own. He was one of the few Elves within the army, most having retreated to the forests to prepare their own defenses while abandoning the humans. His hair was jet black and was slicked back and down his neck, just an inch above the collar of the red robes he wore which had some light armor plating and a short sword adorning his belt. He was one of the few mages that chose to become rune knights, opting to fight along with the rest of his allies rather than hanging back flinging spells.
The druid wore pelts from the beasts of the wilds, making a short and protective robe of thick hide hanging off of his slightly muscular frame. He bore a wooden shield on his back and a scimitar at his side, though a wooden staff was his weapon of choice when he had to resort to his more spiritual abilities rather than combat. His face would appear dirt caked to most but it was his actual complexion, having developed over years living in the forest. His hair was a dirty brown with a face that was hardly extraordinary, to the point that how ordinary he was was actually extraordinary. At his side strode a powerful wolf, tall and dominant as it followed it's druidic partner. It was the duty of every creature of the wild to aid the druids in maintaining order, particularly for the wolf packs which were denoted as the most faithful and loyal of companions a druid would find.
The monk wore loose martial arts clothing weighted as light as a feather, the cloth practically floating on his person as he made his way through the halls. The robes were an almost immaculate white though shimmered darker colors as his mind shifted to darker thoughts. The clothing seemed to shift from being made from immaculate white cloth to darker shades, going particularly dark when he had to focus his mind on remaining unseen and unheard when a guard's footsteps echoed overhead or through one of the tunnels or grates. His hands were wrapped with cloth that glistened with silver threading, acting to aid against the undead in battle. He also had a single simple looking staff across his back, able to be split into two short swords for when he utilized the darker forms of martial arts.
Holding up the tail of the group with his bow and arrow drawn was the ranger, his keen blue eyes focusing at the darkness behind them. His hair was a dirty brown which was tied off into a ponytail behind him. His build was lithe with some defining tone, showing he was just as strong as he was agile. His tan brown leather armor was fitted over a chain mail hauberk, providing some additional protection from harm. On his left shoulder was perched a rather intimidating falcon, Bloodtalon being his close companion some considered him obsessive over the bird. Despite the bird's name his claws were a pristine yellow like the rest of his species, though some red could still be spotted on his beak from his last kill. His bow was unique in that it could was light yet powerful, specially enchanted to be easy to draw back in a hurry while still keeping it's heavy punch when released. On the sides of his belt were a pair of sturdy scimitars, the wooden handles wrapped in fine leather as well as the dull toned scabbards that kept the blades from being worn down when not in use. Even though he was quite skilled with a bow he was claimed as a whirlwind of steel when he chose to draw the twin blades.
As the six grew closer to the main hall the rouge stopped the group, motioning to a secret door. He motioned to the mage who cast a sound dampening spell so they could relax and speak, the rouge speaking first.
"Alright then, from my knowledge of the layout, we should be at the main hall. No doubt we'll find the Black Mage and the Dracolich in there. It's the only place other than the courtyard large enough to fit him. I doubt it's in the courtyard otherwise it would have been exposed to the volley from the catapults before."
The rouge turned to the fighter.
"Zane, I need you to keep the enemy occupied as usual. I'll try to score a few hits on the dracolich myself before falling out of the fight. With any luck I can catch the Mage off guard."
Zane nodded, clasping the much smaller man on the shoulder. "Just don't go dying on me Devon. Remember you owe me a drink for saving your hide from that Ogre!"
Devon smirked and chuckled, appreciating the levity despite the dangerous situation. "Last time I checked I also killed that kobald that pounced on ya. Way I see it we're even."
The mage rolled his eyes and looked at the two. "Shall we continue with the battle plan or shall we keep going off at the mouth? We have a dracolich and a master Necromancer to kill remember?"
Devon sighed and turned to the Mage. "No need to get too hasty Malenon. This could be our last few moments so lets make them count eh?"
Malenon huffed and sighed. "True enough I suppose. Still, gonna assume you want me to keep my energy on limiting the dracolich as much as possible and try to break the control enchantment."
The rouge nodded. "Yes, if we can break the charm holding the dracolich, it could turn the tide if not kill the Black Mage outright. Thoroar!"
The druid stepped forth, staff in hand.
"I'll heal whatever wounds I see and try to keep the enemy rooted to the ground. Last thing we need is for it to fly up out of our reach."
Devon nodded, turning to the ranger.
"Riclain, that's where you come in. Try and make your way onto the support beams when you get in. You and that bird of yours try to attack it from above. It wont expect an attack above it so make each shot count as much as possible."
Riclain nodded and deposited the arrow he held, drawing out a more intimidating projectile of black iron for the first shot as his partner nodded and clicked it's talons in anticipation.
Finally, the monk stepped forward. "I'll stick with positive ki for this fight. I may be able to gather enough energy to banish the creature. If not that, then I should at least be able to disrupt the connection between the Black Mage and the dracolich.
Riclain clasped the bard's shoulder. "Also try and make sure I know before that monstrosity leaps up into the ceiling. Would be a shame for you to have to take care of Bloodtalon, right Halfdan?"
Halfdan looked nervously at the bird as it crowed at him, shaking his head.
"Yes, definitely a shame.."
As they began to creep into the main hall they felt the gaze of the undead sorcerer baring down at them. If looks could kill then every one of them would be dead and raised from their graves on the spot.
"You meddling fools! Do you truly think you can enter my stronghold and destroy me so easily?! You shall soon learn the true meaning of suffering. I shall personally flay the skin from your bones and raise you from the dead just to do it all over again!"
As the heros scattered and entered the fray, they would hear music echoing in their steps.
The stern fighter dashed straight forward, slamming his shield against the dracolich's head to get it's attention. The undead beast reared it's head back and lunged forward, snapping it's powerful jaws against the mortal knight only to be sidestepped or blocked at each attempt. His ring guided his movements as he could sense the attacks as they came. Once more the beast tried to bare down onto the warrior as a clawed talon scratched at it's glowing eye socket.
Riclain was above firing arrows into the joints of the beast from above as planned, finding them near useless before drawing the two axes and leaping down from above. He began to hack his way into the creature's spine as it shook violently to shake off the pest. As the beast attempted to shake away the ranger a strong glowing blow came from the monk from below, redirecting the creature's ire towards him. With this distraction the ranger was able to resume his own assault on the creature.
Halfdan's deft movements kept himself just a hair's breadth away from each swipe the dracolich made against him, leading it back to Zane and his indomitable defense. The monk's few injuries were mended by the druid before the wizened mage began to chant, runic symbols beginning to form underneath the beast in the form of a sealing circle. They began to glow as the Black Mage shook his head.
"I have had enough of this game, I shall send you all to Tartarus!"
The dark wizard began to chant and dark symbols filled the air, forming a circle and spinning as he chanted and directed his energies. As he was about to finish the portal he let out a blood curdling scream, two gleaming daggers protruding from his chest as the rogue seemed to come out from the shadows themselves.
"I don't think so, but do keep the fire warm for when we get there!"
As the two daggers were yanked out of the now dissolving carcass of the undead mage, the dracolich reared up and roared one last time. As it did the dark spirits that controlled it departed the skeletal body and fled from the fortress, a boom of energy pulsing out from the castle as a declaration that the Black Mage was slain. However, there was one critical detail our heroes had forgotten:
The portal was still open.
It was another somewhat peaceful day in Ponyville. Celestia's sun was shining in the sky, the farmer's market was flooded with the town's residence getting their food for the week, ponies talked and gossiped in the town square as they shared their lives with their friends nearby. Sugarcube Corner had cleaned up the mess involving an ornery griffon just a week prior and was receiving business as usual.
However, there was a stirring, a great force of anger and utmost disappointment coming from the schoolhouse.
That force was a very upset and scolding teacher facing down her students.
"I am so surprised at you! Starting a fight in the middle of the schoolyard during recess! What were you three thinking?!"
This was hardly the first time the Cutie Mark Crusaders had ended up in front of Miss Cherilee, though this was the first time it was because of a brawl in the playground. All three of the fillys were covered in bruises and small scrapes from the fight. A short yellow filly with a red mane and matching ribbon spoke first.
"But Miss Cherilee, Diamond Tiara was making fun of us, calling us blank flanks again! We tried to get you when she suddenly grabbed Scootaloo and tried to scare her."
The orange coated and purple maned filly looked down dejectedly and continued.
"I was just so scared when she grabbed me I spun around. I didn't even know my hoof was raised before it hit her. I tried apologizing but she just pounced! Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom only joined in to help protect me. Then Silver Spoon started in and it all just got so out of hoof."
Of course the story was followed by a snide grunt from the side, Diamond Tiara and Solver Spoon smirking happily at the three blank flanks as they tried to tell their little story. As far as the two rich fillies were concerned their parents and their connections made them untouchable. This illusion was quickly shattered as Cherilee snapped her head around at the two.
"Is that true Diamond Tiara? Did you grab Scootaloo from behind?"
Her tone showed she was not taking any nonsense at the moment, her usual patient and calm demeanor giving way to outrage. Sadly for the pink coated filly, she was not that good at reading other ponies. Nor caring what their mood or thoughts were.
"Pfft. Like we should be listening to a couple of blank flanks. It's obvious their talent isn't lying with that stupid story."
Were the little rich filly were more attentive to her surroundings, the sound of Cherilee's hoof slamming on her desk sounded eerily similar to a judge's gavel about to sentence a convict to his death sentence.
"This is EXACTLY the behavior that allowed this sort of incident to occur! From the story you grabbed Scootaloo first and started the fight. You didn't even bother to try and make a decent excuse! Tomorrow we are having your parents over and we are going to discuss this attitude problem. Until this is resolved you can spend every day after school in detention thinking about this behavior!"
As Diamond Tiara showed an expression of mixed shock that the blank flanks were being listened to, fear of what her father would do to her once he heard about this, and rage at the no good blank flanks that got her in trouble. As the CMC were taking a very troubling sense of joy from Tiara's misfortune, Cherilee turned back to them.
"As for you three, I want whoever is in charge of you to come over Tomorrow while Mr. Rich is here. It would be good to have their input into this as well in deciding on Diamond Tiara's permanent punishment."
All three fillies nodded happily save Scootaloo, looking a little crestfallen with the request. Cherilee immediately picked up on this and remembered Scootaloo's file.
"I'm sure AppleJack and Miss Rarity will also be able to be here for Scootaloo. Since her parents are away, it seems best since she spends more time at your homes than even her own at the moment."
The orange pegasus couldn't help but smile up at Cherilee for her kindness, the teacher knowing how hard it must be for such a young filly to be on her own like that. Once they were dismissed they made their way to their clubhouse. Rarity would be busy for a while with a new order in and they had plenty of time to kill. As they reached Sweet Apple Acres they saw a large dark orb form just above the east orchard, the yellow filly looking back at the other two with a look of worry.
"Girls! Do you know what that could be?"
Sweetie Belle pondered for a moment.
"It appears to be a paranormal anomaly of a dimensional nature."
The other two stared blankly at the unicorn, Sweetie Belle sighing as she thought of a way to dumb it down. She had forgotten she had read an entire dictionary over one of her summer breaks.
"It's some weird thing that's probably connecting our dimension to another."
The orange pegasus began to float in the air with excitement.
"Girls, do you know what this means?"
As if a ritual they did whenever opportunity knocks, with the echoing of an epic battle cry rippling across the fields.
"CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS PARANORMAL INVESTIGATORS YAY!!!!!"
The three fillies ran right for the dark glowing orb, unaware of what was about to happen.
The heroes were about to celebrate as they felt the wind suddenly pick up around them, Devon turning to see the portal starting to suck in the six daring heroes.
"Shit! The portal is dragging us in. MOVE!"
Devon soon lost his footing and was sucked into the portal, teleported to who knows where as his companions looked on in terror and shouted in collective worry.
"DEVON!!"
Their fear gave way to a mix of concern and camaraderie for their friend and a great urge to explore, each one ran for the portal in hopes of finding and rescuing their ally. Each one in turn leapt into the portal, the ranger looking over to his companion.
"Something tells me we're gonna regret this old girl."
The falcon gave a silent nod before the two went in, hoping they would not be entering hell itself to find the rogue.
As the adventurers were teleported to god knows where they saw a great series of lights, seeing various worlds pass them by before noticing they were hurtling towards one, each one grabbing onto a friend nearby to avoid getting completely separated. As soon as they reached the light below they were met by the ground. Very abruptly met would be a better way of putting it.
Once all six of the adventurers plus two animal companions landed they had formed a small dog pile, rather ungraceful as the other five were crushed by the fully armored Zane who had landed on top of the group. Their reactions went from Zane's "Well that was interesting." to the Malenon's "My everything hurts...."
Mostly they were soon out cold save for Zane, his heavy armor augmented by his ring which braced his suit for the impact. Unfortunately his comrades were either unconscious or already slipping away.
"Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit.Shit. Shi-" His panic was interrupted by a collective gasp coming from his right, immediately moving between himself and his unconscious comrades only to find an unexpected sight. Before him stood three pastel colored ponies, mere children from what he could gather.
"Ohmigosh REAL LIVE ALIENS!!" the three shouted with a shrill glee in their voices, Zane's expression lightening a bit at their seeming innocence.
"Oh oh! Maybe we can get our cutiemarks in alien catching!"
Zane's face hardened after the white one spoke, drawing hsi sword and raising his shield.
"Listen, I don't know who you are or where we even landed. I don't want any trouble, but I will have to hurt you if you plan on doing harm to my comrades."
A southern drawl echoed out behind the warrior, cocky and strangely grim.
"Heh, I'd like ta see you try partner!"
Zane tried to turn around in time when he felt two strong legs buck his midsection hard, sending him hurtling toward one of the trees behind him with enough force to knock him out. Before he lost his sight to the darkness of unconsciousness he saw the could only be what took him down. With his blurred vision it only looked like a blur of orange and yellow. As he drifted away he heard the ponie's words tot eh girls.
"You three go get Twilight over here. Somethin tells me she has an idea of what the varment's are."
Twilight was quick to respond as well as Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, the three surprised by the scene in front of them as Applejack tried to explain what happened. Fluttershy volunteered to look after the wolf and falcon since she was the only one they didn't immediately turn hostile towards. Since they were creatures of battle it was rare for anyone to calm them save their proper owners or partners. With the help of Applejack's cart they managed to get the six creatures to the hospital where Nurse Redheart looked over their injuries. They were taken to an empty wing of the hospital and treated, the six elements of harmony waiting for the creatures to wake up as Spike ran in.
"Twilight, I just sent Princess Celestia the letter. She should be up to date on the situation."
The purple unicorn turned to her assistant. "Thank you Spike. You should go ahead and get some sleep. Hopefully things will be settled soon."
As the dragon scurried off the adventurers began to stir, slowly sitting up and remembering what had happened. They began to recognize they were in a hospital and they noticed the pastel colored horses. The rogue simply raised an eyebrow and turned to his colleagues.
"Ok... are we in heaven or hell? I'm pretty sure angels don't look like candy colored horses."
As of that moment there was a murderous chill in the air. The purple and White unicorns had their horns glowing. The blue pegasus and orange pony snorted and ground their hooves on the ground. The pink pony's seemingly impossible mane deflated as she took on a dark and sinister snarl. Even the otherwise timid yellow pegasus scowled furiously at the rogue. Before the rogue could be struck dead by their glares the monk raised his hands in a sign of respect and bowed.
"I wish to apologize for my ally's rudeness. He often feels the need to be snide when the moment does not call for it."
The six ponies seemed to lighten up and look to Halfdan, Malenon quickly clearing his throat to get their attention.
"Indeed, though I do believe it is also a cultural difference. You see, in our world horses most resemble your stature and body type. It is not an insult or slur, just what we are more familiar with in our home. Since we cant call you ho- or, erm the H word, what is the name of your race?"
The six looked to eachother in surprise at the eloquent explanation, having half expected the creatures to not speak any language of their world much less so fluently. Twilight stepped forward.
"We're a race known as ponies. I would like to apologize for us acting so suddenly without thinking about the cultural differences."
The mage waved in a dismissive gesture. "It's quite alright. It's to be expected of such things. Perhaps we should start by explaining how we got here."
The mage proceeded to tell them about their fight with the Black Mage and the portal he had summoned, being their magical expert as well as one of the few of them that didn't piss off the populace after a few seconds of regaining consciousness. Fortunately Twilight had read up on dimensional theory ad knew a good deal about these sort of phenomenon, at least for a pony.
"Ok, think it makes sense for the most part. Once you recover we'll worry about where you're going to live. I suppose the Library will be a good place for now with the large basement. So long as you avoid calling ponies the H word we should be good."
As the twelve nodded in agreement the six ponies left them to rest, leaving them to their own deliberations. Despite the large amount of time they were allowed they all came to the same simple conclusion almost immediately.
"We're fucked."
