The weathered wood creaked and groaned, the gentle swaying motion lulling the single passenger into a doze. The stallion in the harness, as tough and solid as his trusty wagon, glanced back briefly and chuckled. “Now Pep, how d’you expect ta help me sell our stock at market when ya cain’t even keep yer eyes open for ten minutes?” his passenger glanced sleepily up at him. “Sorry ‘bout that Pa.” the young rose colored mare apologized “Guess I stayed up a lil’ too late las night.” “Readin’ them mushy books again, I’d wager.” came the teasing reply. “Not this time.” Pepperdance replied, a bit smugly. “I was readin’ up on new salsa recipes.” after a moment’s thought, she added “Though since you hafta lump all the ingredients t’gether, I guess it sorta WAS a mushy book.” Father and daughter shared a laugh as they entered the outskirts of town. Pepperdance had been away from the town for three long months, and she was eager to show off her newly acquired Cutie Mark. The trio of red chili peppers stood out on her rosy flank, and her scarlet mane hung in a braid over her left shoulder. She was almost the complete opposite of her father, Dug, with his slate grey coat and short black mane. His muscled flank was adorned by a crossed shovel and pickaxe. “Scoots is gonna be so jealous.” Pep thought. “Wonder how her and her friends are doin’ anyhow.” she had been away from Ponyville for so long, it was possible that the three fillies known as the Cutie Mark Crusaders had earned their marks as well. The farm mare always had gotten along with younger ponies better than any who were her age. “Cuz they’re all nuts…” she smirked to herself “Colt-bands this and fashion trends that… never a care for anypony ‘sides themselves.” her reverie was interrupted by their arrival at Market Square. “An’ here we are.” Dug said, coming to a halt behind their booth. Pep hopped down and helped him out of the harness, then they set to work arranging the two dozen types of vegetables for sale. Halfway through the habaneros, she was hailed by the next booth over. “Well howdy there, Pepperdance! Ain’t seen you fer a spell.” “G’mornin’ Miss Applejack!” Pep replied happily “I had ta help my Auntie Cayenne fer a bit, but guess what?” she turned to give the apple seller a side view. “Yeehaw, ya’ll got yer Cutie Mark! An’ a mighty fine one, at that. I reckon yore Ma is proud as puddin’.” “She sure is.” Pep agreed “When Aunt Cayenne hurt herself, our pepper crops started sufferin’. And Ma cain’t run the farm and watch lil’ Roma at the same time.” “I ken unnerstand that. Applebloom is still a hoof-ful sometimes.” her emerald eyes twinkled with suppressed mirth “Speakin’ of, she’s gonna be mighty jealous when she finds out.” Pepperdance giggled at the thought “Well, I’d best be getting’ back ta work. These veggies ain’t gonna arrange themselves, after all.” “That’s the truth. Ya’ll take care now.” the farm mares waved a final farewell, and returned to their work. Half an hour later, Pep was seated behind the counter of her family booth, whistling happily as the town began to stir around the Square. A few early shoppers were already at the dairy stands, and an older gentlecolt was perusing the nearby tomato stand. Dug and some other farm folk were gathered round a small table in front of Sugarcube Corner, sipping coffee and talking business. She glanced around her own display, which was arranged by Scoville units. The dozen pepper varieties ranged from sweet green, red and yellow bells to volcanic Ghost. A polite cough caused her to flinch, and she looked up to see the older stallion who had just been at the tomato stand. “Pardon me, sir.” Pep said brightly “Didn’t mean ta be ignorin’ ya. How can I help ya’ll?” “No problem, young un.”’ the wrinkled old face smiled “Do you have any jalapenos in?” “We sure do! Grew these un’s my own self.” she replied, placing a small bushel of shiny green fruit on the counter. “Well you must have quite the green hoof, young filly. These are the finest lookin’ peppers I’ve seen in a good while.” the customer selected four of the largest peppers and placed them in his bag. “Thankee kindly, sir.” Pep told him, trying not to sound too pleased. “I do ‘ave a fondness for the lil’ beauties. Oh, and that’ll be three bits.” “A bargain for such lovely specimens.” the gentlecolt beamed. “I’ll be back once these are gone!” “Have a nice day, sir!” Pep called after him, scooping the coins into the lock box. “Whatta nice ol’ feller. Hope all my customers are that nice.” As the morning passed, Pepperdance did a brisk business, selling out of the red and yellow bells and most of her jalapenos. When Dug returned just before noon, he found her slumped against the barrel of cubanelles. When she noticed his return, she jumped up excitedly. “Lookit Pa, I sole all them bell peppers and my jalapenos are a hit!” “I can see that.” Dug replied, trying to suppress the pride in his voice. His little filly was growin’ up! “How’s about I take over so you ken get a bite o’ lunch?” “That sounds wunnerful, Pa.” she replied wearily. Her stomach gave a low growl, and she blushed slightly. “Be off with ya then.” he told her, smiling gently as she gave him peck on the cheek, then dashed off. When the dust had settled behind Pepperdance, Applejack walked over to speak with the proud father. “Howdy Mr. Miner.” “Howdy yerself, young Apple. How’s ol’ Granny doin’” “Jes peachy, thanks. And how’s your family doing?” “The missus is recoverin’, and our new colt is a chip off the ol’ block.” “Seems like young Pep is growin’ into quite the business pony.” the orange mare winked. “Aye, gets it from ‘er Ma. As well as her talent with growin’ veggibles.” he frowned slightly “Has her head in the clouds more often than not, though.” “Tain’t a bad thang.” Applejack replied “Young un’s oughta have a dream ta follow.” “Rarely have I heard truer words.” the grizzled stallion agreed. Dreamin’ too much can be dangerous though.” “That’s true. Ah don’t think ya hafta worry bout Pepperdance.” Applejack assured him. “She’s got a good head on ‘er shoulders.” “I appreciate the kind words young un.” Dug replied. “But it seems as if we’d best get back to work. The afternoon crowd be comin’.” The farm folk said their goodbyes and prepared to face the oncoming rush. Pepperdance sat outside a small café, munching the last of her hay fries and enjoying the early spring sunshine. As she rose to leave, placing bits on the table as a tip, she heard an unpleasantly familiar voice. “Well, well, look what the dust blew in.” came the snide comment “Little miss super chef has returned at long last.” the speaker was a white coated Pegasus mare with a lilac mane. She was a year older than Pep, and sported a bunch of purple grapes as on her flank. “Hello, Sugar Grape. What d’you want?” Pep asked warily. Sugar came from an old farming family too, but because they sold the ‘highest quality grapes in Equestria’, they had little in the way of kindness or decency. Pepperdance couldn’t stand them. “Now Pep, is that any way to speak to an old school chum?” Sugar asked innocently “I merely wanted to congratulate you on earning your Cutie Mark. Finally.” the white mare’s face split with a haughty sneer. “It only took you what, two years longer than the rest?” “Mayhaps, but Pa sez that the rarest flowers always bloom late.” the farmer replied “At least, your brother Concord always thought so.” Sugar Grape’s amethyst eyes flew wide with rage. “You leave poor Conny out of this! You’re the reason he got shipped off to the Royal Guard Academy!” “An’ how the blazes is that my fault!?” Pep demanded “He’s the foal who tried ta force ‘imself on me. I was jes protectin’ myself!” Sugar faltered, horror painting her delicate features “He did WHAT!?” “Oh, never tole ya the whole story, did he?” Pep snorted “He prolly tried ta blame the whole mess on me.” “Well, yes… but…” “Look, don’t worry bout it, Sugar. I forgave ‘im, even if his apology was forced. Now, if’n you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna head to Sugarcube Corner for dessert.” Pepperdance trotted off in the direction of her favorite sweet shop, leaving a frazzled Pegasus behind her. Making her way through the Market, Pepperdance glanced around at the nearly infinite stalls and booths, her bits clamoring to be spent with every step. As she passed a blacksmith’s forge, she wondered idly how Concord was doing at the Royal Guard Academy. The mental picture of him sweating and grunting as a drill sergeant bellowed at him gave her a fit of giggles. When they had subsided, Pep became aware of a familiar buzzing sound to her left, and just managed to dodge an orange and purple blur as it whizzed past. “Scoots!” she called after it, hoping to catch the young filly’s attention. The blur ground to a halt, and the Pegasus looked back in excitement. “Pep! You’re back!” Scootaloo cried happily. Pep trotted over to her and they hugged. “You got your Cutie Mark!? So not fair!” “Aw, boo-hoo.” Pep teased “It showed up bout a week an a half ago, as I was helpin’ Ma ‘n Aunt Cayenne in the gardens.” “I really like it! It totally suits you.” Scootaloo admitted “I thought so to, Scoots. So, where’s the fire?” “Oh, no fire. I’m just late meeting Sweetie and Applebloom at the Library. We have to help Twilight out, cuz we messed it up yesterday.” “Typical.” the farm pony said, shaking her head in amusement “I prolly don’t wanna know how, do I?” Scootaloo grimaced. She and her two friends, known as the Cutie Mark Crusaders, were perpetually in trouble around town. “Have fun with that. I’m off ta Sugarcube Corner.” “Okay! See ya around, Pep!” the hyperactive filly took off again, her tiny wings beating frantically. Pepperdance watched her go, grinning, then joined the line outside Ponyville’s premier sweet shop. While waiting in line, Pep thought longingly of the triple chocolate muffin she intended to buy. The mere thought of the dark confection was enough to send her salivary glands into overdrive. When the rosy mare finally made it to the front of the line, the bright pink salespony gave a squeal of delight. “Pepperdance! It’s SO good to see you back in town!” “Hey there, Miss Pinkie.” Pep replied heartily “Believe me, it’s good to BE back.” she leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Got a big batch o’ yer favorite Ghost pepper sauce brewin’ back home.” Pinkie Pie bounced happily “Just in time, too! I’m down to my last bottle.” “Brought some along, if’n you’d care fer a preview. Left it at the booth, though.” “Sounds awesome! I’ll drop by after work. Now then, the usual for you?” “Yes, please.” Pep answered. Pinkie Pie slipped through the swinging door to her right, and returned promptly with an enormous cupcake that oozed chocolate. Pep reached for her coin pouch, but the party pony stopped her with a mock stern hoof shake. “Oh, no you don’t. Friends who recently earned their Cutie Marks don’t pay on my watch!” she smiled and laughed “Congratulations Pepperdance!” Pep blushed slightly as the other customers cheered. She took the confection gratefully unable to resist a small nibble. “Thankee kindly, Miss Pinkie, everypony.” she looked around, still a bit embarrassed. “But I gotta be gettin’ back to the Market, else I’ll be late. G'bye!” “See ya after my shift!” Pinkie called after her. Pep headed back to the Market Square, eating her delicious dessert. She stopped to wait for a line of carts to pass, and found that she had finished it. Regretfully, she wadded up the wrapper and tossed it in a nearby trash bin. As the soggy paper landed, a cry of dismay echoed up out of the trash can. “Aww, right in my face.” Pepperdance, startled by the voice replied “Um, sorry ‘bout that. Didn’t know anypony was in there.” “Oh, that’s alright. I was hoping somepony would come along and find me. I think my friends forgot about me. Again.” Pep walked over to the bin and glanced in. A small colt looked back up at her with bright blue eyes. “Good afternoon, Miss. My name’s Pip.” the rosy farm mare giggled at his accent. “Nice ta meetcha Pip. My name is Pep.” she helped him out of the bin, and picked the soggy wrapper off his head. The colt had a brown and white splotched coat, and a short brown mane. “You’ve got a funny accent, Miss Pep.” “It ain’t half as funny as yours, Sir Pip.” she smiled at the energetic little colt. “So then, ya say yer friends forgot ya?” “Yes.” Pip replied with a sigh “We was playin’ hide n’ seek, but that was ages ago. Now I just want to go home.” “Do you live here in Ponyville?” Pep asked “Yes, miss. We moved here from Trottingham a few months ago.” “I see. Well, I’ll help ya out. Oh, and as much as I appreciate the politeness, my friends call me Pepperdance. Pep fer short.” “Okay mi- Pep! My real name is Phillip, but it sounds too fancy for me. Most ponies call me Pipsqueak.” “I can unnerstand that.” the mare agreed “Pepperdance is kinda a mouthful. Now, where’s yer house?” Pip lead her down the alley and paused, clearing trying to remember the way home. “I- I can’t recall.” he admitted. “There were so many ponies around, I got all mixed up.” “Well, I’m heading back to the Market, would ya like to accompany me, and we’ll see if’n ya remember the way? Else we could wait for Miss Pinkie Pie ta show up. She knows everypony.” “Oh, yes, Miss Pinkie is really nice! I’ll just wait with you, if that’s alright.” the colt smiled up at her, his innocent eyes filled with trust. “No problemo, Pip.” she redirected their steps towards the Square. “Now tell me, do ya like spicy food?”

Two young ponies made their way through the throng, careful to stay out of the business ponies. As they walked, the rosy mare and dual hued colt kept up a stream of animated talk. ”And that’s how I saved Nightmare Night!” Pip concluded happily, glancing up to see Pepperdance’s reaction. “That’s awesome, Pip.” she replied, grinning “I would sure like ta meet the Princess.” “I bet you will next year!” Pipsqueak told her “She promised to come back and visit.” “Sounds mighty fun. An’ here we are!” they stopped in front of her family booth, where Dug was haggling with a customer. Rather than interrupt, Pep led her new friend around back to wait. “Whoa… I’ve never seen so many peppers!” the colt exclaimed in astonishment “Did you grow them all yourself?” “Nah, I jes help out ‘round the farm. Only the jalapenos are mine.” Pep dragged the tub of peppers closer, beaming down at them “These lil beauties are my pride n joy.” Pipsqueak watched in fascination as she picked up a particularly large, shiny green specimen. He eagerly jumped onto a nearby box for a better view, as Pepperdance picked up a knife, and expertly sliced the jalapeno into small circles. Recognition dawned in his bright eyes as Pep spread them out. “Oh, those things! My uncle eats em all the time.” he grimaced “I tried them accidentally when I stole a bite of his sandwich.” “Reckon you learned your lesson bout not taking food from other ponies.” Pep giggled and set her knife down. “Sure did! I had to drink a whole pint of milk to get rid of the burning in my mouth.” the rosy mare popped a piece into her mouth, grinning at her little friend’s reaction. “Ya get used to the burn. Someponies like it, if’n they’re crazy like I am.” “You called?” a familiar voice asked from the booth front. The two friends turned to find Pinkie Pie grinning at them, her eyes twinkling. Dug was still helping the Pegasus customer, so Pepperdance gestured for the party pony to join them in the back. “Hi again, Pep! Hey there, Pip!” Pinkie greeted “Hi, Miss Pinkie.” the friends chorused. The pink pony giggled and said “So Pep, you said you had a sample for me?” “Yup, hang on a tick.” Pep replied, trotting to the wagon and rummaging through a small blue bag. “How’d you end up here, Pipsqueak?” Pinkie asked while they waited. “I was playing hide and seek with some other colts and fillies, and I guess I hid too good.” “They didn’t find you at all?” Pinkie asked “Nope. I hid in an empty trash bin, and didn’t get found til Miss Pep came along.” “And threw my cupcake wrapper on his head.” Pep added. She placed a small earthenware flask on the counter, and grabbed a couple pieces of bread from the bag. “He can’t remember how to get home, so I figured we could play until you came. Cuz you know everypony.” “Miss Pep is really cool!” Pip said “She’s my new best friend.” the farm mare blushed slightly “Sure am.” she agreed, nudging the little colt playfully. “Aw, that’s awesome! New friends are the best, but so are old friends.” Pinkie bounced happily. Pep uncorked the flask and poured a couple drops onto a slice of bread. “There ya go, Miss Pinkie. Try that an see whatcha think.” the party pony bit off the sauced end and chewed thoughtfully. A look of ecstasy passed over her face as the spicy liquid hit her tastebuds. Pipsqueak watched curiously as Pinkie ate another slice with sauce, and Pepperdance joined her. “Oh my gosh! This is REALLY good!” Pinkie exclaimed “You’ve really outdone yourself, Pep!” “Thanks, Miss Pinkie.” the rosy mare replied “Auntie Cayenne helped a bit, but I made most of it.” “What is that stuff?” Pip asked “My family’s secret hot sauce.” Pep told him, winking “Made from Bhut Jolokias, more commonly known as Ghost peppers.” “Cause if you’re not expecting the heat, it’ll turn you into a ghost!” Pinkie added. “Ain’t that the truth.” the deep voice of Pep’s Pa agreed. “I still remember when yer Ma put some in my soup when I was courtin’ her.” the younger ponies laughed at the grimace he wore “Tol me it was a test, t’see if I could take it.” “And not only did he pass, but he developed a taste for em.” Pep added “Best tastin’ soup I’ve ever eaten.” Dug agreed. They all laughed again, and Pep recorked the flask, handing it to Pinkie Pie. “Glad ya liked it, Miss Pinkie. So can ya help lil’ Pip get home?” the older mare gave a sudden shiver and replied “I could, but it won’t be necessary.” the others stared at her quizzically. “My Pinkie Sense just told me that somepony who is looking for him will be here soon.” she attached the small flask to a leather cord and flung it over her head. “If you say so.” Pepperdance said dubiously. “Miss Pinkie is never wrong!” Pipsqueak told her confidently “I’ll wait a little longer.” “I’ll wait too!” Pinkie said “That way, I can see Pep’s reaction!” the farm mare stuck her tongue at the party pony, and Dug turned to help a waiting customer. Half an hour later as the Market was closing down, Pinkie shivered again and said “Oh look, here comes Pip’s guide home!” the other two turned to see her pointing a unicorn colt who was walking towards the booth. He had a deep teal blue coat, and a short seafoam green mane and tail. Pipsqueak gasped in delight and rushed around the booth to greet the newcomer. “Uncle Roleplay! What are you doin’ here?” “Searching for my favorite nephew, of course!” the unicorn replied in a similar accent “Imagine me traveling all this way from my new home in Baltimare, only to find you missing. Bad form, Pip.” he scowled in mock anger. Pinkie laughed at Pep’s expression. “Well, my job here is done. Bye Pip! See ya, Pep! The look on your face is priceless!” she bounced off to parts unknown as Pep closed her gaping mouth with a blush. “Told you so!” Pip giggled. “Miss Pinkie is ALWAYS right.” “What are you talking about, old boy?” Roleplay asked, puzzled. “Oh, well, I was hiding for a long time, but nopony could find me. Then Miss Pepperdance threw a wrapper on my head, and we became friends! Then Miss Pinkie showed up, and she was going to take me home, but then she said somepony else would come, and next thing we know, you showed up!” the little colt breathed deeply as the older ponies chuckled at his outpouring. “You found my little nephew, eh?” Roleplay asked the farm mare. “Yup, and he’s been chattin’ my ear off since.” Pepperdance laughed. “He tends to do that.” the unicorn agreed, nudging his nephew. “I’m glad you’re safe, Pipsqueak.” he bowed slightly at Pep. “Thank you, Miss, for putting up with the silly foal.” “Uncle!” Pip protested “Twas my pleasure. And please, my name is Pepperdance.” “I’m known as Roleplay, for my small skill in acting.” “Yeah, real small!” Pip said, giggling “Everypony’s a critic…” Roleplay sighed, rolling his eyes. He noticed Dug watching them intently, and gave a friendly nod. Pep followed his gaze and smiled “That’s my Pa. He’s a tad overprotective.” “Ah. Well, I’d say he’s got reason to be.” was the unthinking reply. The mare blushed slightly, though it was hardly visible. The dappled colt giggled again “That means he thinks you’re pretty.” he told Pep in a stage whisper. An embarrassed silence followed this pronouncement, as neither of the older ponies knew what to say. Roleplay cleared his throat, glancing back towards the booth. “So, you and your father sell vegetables?” “Sure do!” Pepperdance perked up, seizing the change of subject. “Family’s been raisin’ and sellin’ peppers of all kinds fer generations.” “A worthy talent.” the unicorn nodded “I’m afraid that I’ve more of a brownhoof than one of green.” Pep snorted “That’s alright. I’d prolly be the one to die, if’n I had to perform fer anypony.” they both laughed and the farmer asked “What about you, Pip? Anything you’re good at?” “Do you think there’s a Cutie Mark for hiding?” the colt asked. “Sure, y’could be a spy or somethin’.” “Hmm. I’d say he’s very good at causing trouble for his family.” the older colt laughed “Like staying out past supper.” “Or stealin’ bites of his uncle’s jalapeno laced sandwich?” Pep put in. Roleplay chuckled wryly “Told you about that, did he? I tried to warn him…” “Not hard enough!” Pipsqueak protested “My mouth was on fire the whole day.” he stifled a yawn, and his uncle winked at him. “Seems as though tis somepony’s bedtime. But before we go, have you any jalapenos in stock? It’s been ages since I’ve had a fresh one.” “Sure, we got a few left.” the trio walked the short distance to the booth. “Hey Pa, could ya grab the last o’ the penos fer me? Pip’s uncle wants ta buy em.” “ Sure thing, Pep.” the stoic stallion replied, his tense expression relaxing. He grabbed up the small tub and placed it on the counter. “We’re gonna need ta pack up soon, so we can make it home afore nightfall.” “Aye, aye, Pa.” Pep saluted. Turning to the colts she said “Here we are. Grew these myself.” Roleplay gazed down at the remaining fruits in admiration. “And they look delicious.” he said, levitating one out. Popping it into his mouth, he closed his eyes in pleasure. “Oh heavenly fire, how I’ve missed thee!” he proclaimed. The others laughed and Pip yawned again. He squeaked in protest as a teal aura enveloped him and he was levitated onto the older colts back. “How much for that bit of paradise, plus the others?” Dug quoted the price, and the unicorn set the bits on the counter. “Twas a pleasure meeting you sir, and you Pepperdance.” he bowed slightly. “And you, young un.” Dug replied. Pep grinned at her new friends “Pleasure was mine, friends. You two have a good night.” “G’bye, Miss Pep.” the dappled colt said sleepily “Thanks for playing with me.” “Anytime, Sir Pip.” the rosy mare replied with a wink. “Careful with those penos, now.” “Will do.” Roleplay said, “Good night and safe travels.” as he trotted off into the dusk, Pepperdance noticed that his Cutie Mark was a silver mask that was crying on one side, and laughing on the other. “An actor’s mark, fer sure.” she chuckled, turning to help her father pack up the remaining produce. In the deepening shadows of a nearby alley, a pair of bright blue eyes watched the friends part company. The observer shuddered as a wave of premonition swept through her. “Ooh, this is gonna be good.” she giggled in anticipation. “What’s going to be good, Pinkie?” asked a familiar voice. The party pony turned to find a lavender unicorn passing behind her. “Hi Twilight! Just watching destiny in action.” Twilight Sparkle looked puzzled and curious “How do you watch destiny?” “With my eyes, of course!” “Whatever you say, Pinkie Pie.” the librarian continued on her way, shaking her head. The earth pony giggled again and bounced off towards Sugarcube Corner, eager to taste more of the fiery sauce that Pepperdance had given her.

The small farmhouse windows spilled lamp light into the yard as Dug ground to a halt. Pep leapt from her seat and helped him out of the harness “Thanks, Pep.” the stallion said gratefully. “By the Stones, I’m beat!” “Ya ain’t gettin’ any younger, after all.” the rosy mare replied with an impish grin. “Is that so? Well, I’ll jes let you empty the wagon, seein’ as how yer so young ‘n strong.” “Sure thing, Pa!” Pep saluted, trotting round the wagon and jumping into the back. She stacked the empty produce bins together and hopped back down, carrying them to a nearby shed. Upon returning to the wagon, she found that her father had taken the still occupied bins down for her, then disappeared in the house. She smiled and went to work carrying them all into the shed with the empty ones. Ten minutes later, Pep exited the shed, wiping her brow and sighing. The moon had made it halfway over the hills that hid Ponyville. Pep paused to enjoy the view, and a gentle breeze that stirred her crimson mane. “Princess Luna sure does fine work.” she thought aloud “I hope I DO get ta meet her, someday.” The enormous silver orb pulsed slightly, as if in reply. Pepperdance was surprised, but recovered quickly. She bowed briefly, a little humbled and said “G’night, Princess.” she then turned and headed into the house, eager to record the day’s events in her journal. As she entered the house, the lingering aroma of dinner hit her nose, making her mouth water. She eagerly followed the scent of mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers towards the kitchen, and found her family gathered around the table. Roma gurgled at her from his high chair “Howdy ta you too, lil’ bro.” she greeted, walking over and kissing the top of his head. The little colt giggled, and pounded his hooves on his messy tray. His rust colored coat was stained with his leftovers, and his auburn mane was mussed. “Hello, dear.” Her mother greeted, rising and hugging her. “Hi Ma. I sold all my ‘penos today.” “ So Ah heard. Cay wil be proud of ya. She had ta go to bed, though.” She released her daughter and added “Ah’m guessin’ yer a bit hungry, eh?” “Sure am!” the young mare replied, seating herself between Roma and their father. “She oughta be after all that business she helped with, Belle.” Dug told his wife, pride in his voice “She’s got the ol’ Pepper family gene, sure enough.” Pepperdance flushed with pleasure as her mother placed a heaping plate of tortillas and filling before her. “Portobello fajitas, my favorite!” As Pep dug into her meal, Dug reported on the events at Market. “We sold two and a half bins of the bells, five jars of pepperocinis, and the tub of Pep’s ‘penos.” His wife nodded, her firey mane bouncing as she recorded the information in a notebook. “Which colors?” She asked, referring to her namesake. “Mostly green, nearly two bins. Rest were reds ‘n yellers.” Dug replied. “Got it.” Belle said triumphantly, replacing her pen in an apron pocket. “Ah’ll let mah sister know tomorrow. She’s still not feeling too good. Poor thang.” Roma gurgled again, in seeming agreement, giving his family a good laugh. Pep took a long drink of tomato juice, and sighed contentedly. “That’s the stuff.” she said, wiping her mouth. “Oh, almost fergot, Ma. Miss Pinkie REALLY liked that new batch o’ sauce.” “Ah’m sure Cay’ll be pleased ta hear it. You two ‘ave been workin’ on it fer months now.” “Yep, it should be ready for sellin’ next Market day.” Pep replied, happily. “We’ll need to think of ways ta advertise it.” Dug commented “Ga da da!” Roma agreed, pounding his tray again. His father chuckled, ruffling his mane. “We’ll make a business-pony of ya yet, my boy.” Pep giggled and stood, carrying her empty plate to the sink. “Thanks Ma, it was awesome, as always.” she said, hugging her mother again. “I’m gonna head to my room now.” “She’s eagerly waiting to tell her diary about the ‘good looking unicorn colt’ she met today.” her father added, dryly. “Pa!” the rosy mare protested, flushing again. “I’m just goin’ up ta listen to my radio. And it ain’t a diary!” “Whatever you say, Pep.” the stallion smirked. His daughter stomped off upstairs, and he chuckled again. “Good looking unicorn?” Belle asked, raising an eyebrow. “He came and picked up his nephew, that dappled colt I mentioned earlier. He bought the last of her ‘penos, and they spoke fer a bit. I kept an eye on ‘im, though.” his wife sighed “Hun, Ah can understand yer concern, but ya don’t need ta hover. Pepperdance is a grown mare, now. Handled ‘erself right proper with that Grape boy.” “I s’pose yer right.” Dug agreed. “I’ll try ta back off… a bit.” “Guess that’s all Ah can hope fer.” Belle sighed. She removed Roma’s tray and helped him down from the high chair. The little colt immediately tottered over to his father, and looked up expectantly. “You sure are a messy lil’ foal.” the slate stallion told him “I think it’s time fer yer bath.” he swooped the giggling colt onto his back and raced towards the bathroom at a gentle trot. Upstairs, Pepperdance entered her bedroom, muttering darkly about nosy fathers, and shut her door with unnecessary force. The room was simply furnished, a bed in one corner, and desk, lamp, and small radio in the other. The blankets on the bed were rumpled, and a small stuffed animal lay face down on the pillow. Pep walked over and propped her old friend into a sitting position. “Sorry Beaky, I left pretty fast this mornin’” the small Pheonix plush stared up at her, accusation in its button eyes. “I know it’s my own fault fer stayin’ up so late. No need to go pointin’ talons.” the young mare sighed “And yes, I know I shouldn’t be talkin’ to a stuffed animal.” she turned to the desk, which was still littered with her late night research. She sat down and cleared the notes away, stacking them in the ‘Encyclopedia Scovilla’ and shutting the enormous book. She slid it to the corner, and grabbed her journal down from the other. She switched on her radio, and it crackled to life. “ – Now at BARNYARD BARGAINS!” it blared “Thank goodness, missed my least favorite commercial.” Pep said, opening her journal as the station identified itself and the DJ returned. “And now, back to the good stuff!” a cheery female voice declared “DJ PON-3 here, rockin’ the late shift with my best bud, Blues!” “Just don’t forget that you owe me one for staying.” a deep male voice added “I could be home, practicing my sax.” “Yeah, yeah.” The DJ replied, almost petulantly. “Now then, it’s time for Bridleway hour!” “Indeed, Vinyl.” her co-host agreed “And tonight we have a special recording of Junior Bridleway’s recent performance of ‘Neigh Miserables’.” Pep perked up at this announcement “Sweet, one of my favorites!” The overture swept out of the tiny radio as Pep lowered pencil to paper. “Dear Journal, I finally got to go back to Ponyville today. I saw Scoots, and Miss Pinkie, and even made a new friend, Pipsqueak! We had lots of fun together, then his uncle came a got him. Pip is a dappled earth pony, but his uncle is a Unicorn. He’s an actor, and is fun to talk to as well…” Pepperdance paused in her writing as the exchange between Jean Valjean and Javert began. Javert - “Now bring me prisoner two-four-six-oh-one! Your time is up, and your parole’s begun, You know what that means!” Valjean – “Yes, it means I’m free…” Javert – “No! It means you get your yellow ticket of leave. You are a thief!” Valjean – “I stole a loaf of bread!” Javert – “You robbed a house!” Valjean – “I broke a windowpane…”the song continued as Pep listened closely. “That Javert sounds familiar…hm.” a knock on her door brought her back to reality. She turned to find Belle peeking in at her. “Howdy, Ma. Whatcha need?” Pep inquired. “Jest checkin’ in on ya.” was the reply “It’s gettin’ late, an’ we’ve got lots ta do tomorrow.” “I know, Ma. I’ll go to bed as soon as Bridleway hour is over.” Belle shook her head in amusement “Well, I s’pose since yer ‘gettin’ some culture’ as Cay would say.” the young mare grinned “Thanks, Ma. G’night!” “Sleep well, dear.” Belle said, quietly shutting the door behind her. Seven miles away in Ponyville, another bedroom door closed softly on a dappled colt, snoring away in bed. “Good night, Pip.” Roleplay murmured, smiling. He trotted down the hall to the guest room, and found his sister straightening up. “Little tyke just fell asleep.” he reported. “Excitement from seeing his favorite uncle finally wore off, eh?” the white Earth pony grinned. “Well, seeing as how I’m his only uncle, I guess I’m a shoo-in for favorite.” the unicorn laughed. Bobbin chuckled in agreement. “I’ve tidied up, as you can see.” she said, brushing an errant strand of brown mane out of her face. The small bedroom had a twin size bed in the far corner, a nightstand next to it, and an antique radio near the window. “You still have that old dinosaur?” Roleplay asked, walking over to the radio. “What can I say? I’m a sentimentalist.” his sister replied. “Well, I’m off to bed now. See you in the morning, brother mine.” “Sleep well, dear sister. And thank you again for letting me stay.” “Anytime, Roleplay. Good night.” she shut the door behind her, and the teal unicorn gazed out the window at the twinkling stars. “Such a beautiful night… I’d best get to bed, though. Got a big day tomorrow.” he turned, got into bed, and settled in with a sigh. Perhaps he’d get to see that red-maned mare again. “What is it with me and red-manes? Ah well…” he drifted off to sleep, anticipating the next day eagerly.
