Yannick was born with the ability to use magic, and has always studied the art. Unfortunately for him, society fears Magi, and is not used to the idea of people with supernatural powers walking among them. He also has no memories of his childhood.

Magi tend to keep themselves separated from society, or live in secrecy for the most part. Some live in covenants, a small area in which a group of Magi congregate and study magic together.

Yannick's world itself is also not untouched by myth, so anything is possible. Just as much as his journey through Equestria.
